That said, it would bring up the question of why they don't, well, do something, if, say, their home country (so to speak) is getting invaded or fighting or something.

"This just in: TGW's army still uses bicycles. We are still awaiting further information to determine whether these are intended to replace the pitifully under-armed tankettes, or simply to serve alongside them."

Most of our tankettes have recoilless guns, silly Soode.

Our only Gods are Gods of War and Death.
The God of Death began as the God of Life, but his Demigod lover was killed(not going too deep into it) and, to see her again, he sacrificed his power over life to watch over the departed.
The God of War was always the God of War, and he is the one that killed the God of Death's Demigod lover.

What's the purpose of having them if the people want neither?

The God of Death was envisioned as a friend of the Verdo-Releignian soldier, as our people see Death as a glory to strive for(as when the grunts are cloned they are taught this, the Officers are taught to survive and command).
The God of War is praised for bringing us to many swift victories, such as the "Battle of Frederick's Hill" where 700 Verdo-Releignian infantry held for 2 days, killing 1,600+ men before they all succumbed to superior numbers. Reinforcements arrived hours later and crushed the enemy, erecting a pyre from all the dead in honor of the God of War.
