Spring (March)
The people of the Protected states went about their daily lives, oblivious. Despite the coldest winter on record, with first snowfall in November in the central isle (a record earliest), the people were apathetic. The government did not concern itself with the cold; wars continued despite the ice. Local officials concerned themselves only with reelection. The vast majority of the nation's scientists were focused on space research. A little chill was nothing compared to keeping crime down. Since the snow was finally beginning to thaw, people were outside more than they had been. There were few clouds, but that was just fine.

The naval captains were the first to realize it. Their ships weren't going as fast as they usually should on the current. It was only after careful observation that they arrived at the terrible truth: the gulf stream (epuivalent) had stopped.

Within the nation of Pastaer, nothing had seemed to change. Sure, it was cold, but it always had been, and what were a few extra degrees down going to do? No one actually felt the difference, and the change in temperature from really cold to slightly more cold was not surprising. Oddly enough, the rivers, although frozen over, seemed to have risen a tad, and the ice was marginally thinner, but the water level was peculiar, not dangerous, and most reasoned that the thinner ice was due merely due to the rising water levels. So life trudged on as usual in Pastaer, thanks to His Noodly Goodness.

The Northern Protected States began to be hit hard. The longer winter meant that planting season had been shortened drastically: the people of longtime state Daga were especially hurt. The Rotenese government encouraged the southernmost states to help by supplying aid -- but this only spread the total food resources out thinner, and soon, Roten was bidding on higher food prices from the now wealthier Protected States. The Rotenese Governmetn tried to raise the fee for these states' memberships, but this did not go over well. The fees were based on population, they said, and this had not increased at all.

So, Roten was spending on a deficit for the first time in its history. Northernmost protected states began to grow angry at the footsoldiers stationed at the borders, who always seemed to have just a little more food than the citizens. Some even clamored for war with northern neighbors Paster or NX401, certain that their straits must be more dire, and that they would attack soon, and that there should be a preemptive strike against them.

The loss of the gulf stream current was devastating to Rotenese overwater shipping. Being an island nation, most shipping was done that way, but the loss of the current slowed down Rotenese shipping vessels, and caused them to use more fuel. Roten's own fuel reserves began to run low, and scientists frantically searched for an alternative energy source.

Slowly, the nation became more aware of the peculiarity of events. Tourists spoke of unusually long winters, and scarcity of food, while Pastaeran fisherman reported that they had to drill another foot through ice, on average, to reach the water below. Water levels were surprisingly high, reaching a level that was last reached 4 centuries ago. The nation's religious council grew wary, and began to inspect dams and levies for signs of strain from the increased water level. A few nearby nations were suffering much more, however, and Pastaer feared an invasion. The borders were now manned, and factories that were once silent began cranking out tanks and aircraft. However, the alert was merely a precautionary action, and few believed anything drastic would happen.
