Steel Confessors, when you refer to the Colours as a 'level III swarm', what do you mean exactly? Because I take offense to not being considered more dangerous than the shambling mushroom people.

Well, you are a little more dangerous than the shambling mushroom people, especially since you fill in that niche better with specialized castes. However, mushrooms are hard to exterminate...

Instead though, I'll label you Level IIIA and him Level IIIB. There?

In order to fulfill a swarm category it has to hit three characterizations.

1) Produces large amounts of organisms in often times rapid quantities at once and is capable of fully supporting such large numbers of creatures. Your womb-ships and worlds fill this.

2) Utilizes total environment to organize what could be considered the host organism, such as your use of bio-matter to produce more of you guys and especially with the whole mutagenic invasion.

3) Viral in its ability to reproduce, often times accumulating from the smallest organism into a massive flood of bodies.

Now, the individual levels were discussed earlier, but here's the bit:

As such though, Level I swarms are creatures that breed like rabbits, often times infest a planet, wiping out the population until they only exist. This can be included with or without their own naturally spawned ecosystem. Xenomorphs for example would fall here. They produce rapidly and effectively but lack the ability to get off world and often times are relegated to minor castes.

Level II swarms are creatures that fall under the above category but in addition have the ability to produce a manner of leaving their homeworld and infesting solar systems. They are also categorized based upon their ability to produce multiple castes. This may not be included in the next steps upwards. Tyranids and Zerg would fall here.

Level III swarms are swarms that included the above requirements but have the ability to utilize technology in some manner. Whether this is bio-mechanical in nature, such as a home grown rifle, or simply the ability to create and utilize tech of any kind. Orks and your lads would fall here.

Level IV swarms are technological in nature. Often times things like nannites but things like the Rethast would fall here too.

Tactics vary on manner of dealing with them, procedures to be observed, battle rites to be carried out and often times certain plans to take action. Not the first rodeo mate. Think though of like MOPP for a modern army.

Exterior species all fall under categorization based upon their innate abilities and appearance. When you've got a lot of time and often times wind up facing lots of species and those of similar kinds you quite quickly just produce a mission plan for each one to follow out.

To us you are a Swarm. A level III swarm though.

Swarms are a broad based thing that labels creatures based upon their reproduction rate and method of reproduction. This is often times characterized by large 'batches' of creatures produced at a time. Numbers though are often critical too. Such as troops produced, total population and method of control of a planet. Orks for example would be considered a level III swarm. And they are fungi. What you are taxonomically has no impact on the 'swarm' label.

Hmm. Interesting. Every world is a womb-world, every bit of land taken used to expand the Swarm. A standard Swarm fleet might contain three womb-ships, which take in matter and produce materials, including ships.

2) Utilizes total environment to organize what could be considered the host organism, such as your use of bio-matter to produce more of you guys and especially with the whole mutagenic invasion.

Ah yes. Any planet with a sustained invasion of the Swarm will begin to see its environment and atmosphere change, with a common change being a sudden increase of rainstorms. These storms are seeded with 'the Gift', a microscopic substance that attaches to anything it touches and, as more drops fall, change and adapt it, bringing it into the Swarm's fold.

The Gift of Damballah is adapted to affect the lifeforms of a given planet. So a creature with the Gift will rapidly become a drone, which are sent en masse as cannon fodder against enemies.

3) Viral in its ability to reproduce, often times accumulating from the smallest organism into a massive flood of bodies.

As is the case of the Swarm, of course. Even the barest fraction of a Colour left alive is enough to birth a new Rainbow in Damballah's image.
