I re-submitted my application (as I was told I could do) in the form of an edit, but the notification of that may have been lost in the chatter that occurred since. For ease of referral:
The 44th Indp Legion wrote:EDIT: reworked for brevity, clarification and to incorporate suggestions
(Image)
Civilization Name: The 44th Independent Legion
Government type: Authoritarian Democracy
Home Planet: Sertek
Government Information: The UHP, a moderated, trade-favoured neo-communist party has ruled the 44th, with or without the need for a political coalition, practically non-stop for hundreds of years. The government is a stickler for rules and loves treaties and oddly specific laws of many kinds. The amount of red tape and paperwork is astounding, yet somehow doesn't really hamper the governments ability to be effective all that much. Well, not usually, anyway.
Population: including ship crews, blacklisted personnel and 'acquired' citizens: ~5.8bln
Species name: Halfblood (formally classified as "subhuman")
Founding Species: Saurai (extinct in these parts of the universe)
Other Species: there is a small selection of Fullbloods (also formally classified as "subhuman")
Major Civilian industries/Services: Trade, trade, glorious trade! Matter converters can produce exotic or otherwise rare materials with relative ease if you can manage to keep the things going. Strong export of raw materials. Finished produce such as spaceship (components), weaponry and armour of various kinds are not normally exported.
Society and Cultural information: A quick rundown:
The 44th independent Legion derives its name from the secession procedures (from the "dependent" saurai legions, usually referred to as the 'standard legions') which occurred on a large scale just before the onset of the Saurai Civil War. The number is simply the numerical order in which various factions have seceded from the standard legions and their derivatives. During and after the Saurai Civil War, the ethnic demographic of the 44th slowly developed from a mostly saurai and human demographic to one almost 100% halfblood.
In the wake of the saurai civil war the 44th was almost completely wiped out. The history books of the 44th list the saurai civil war, and the Great Purge that ended it, as the cause of the big bang, but this is not actually the case.
The technological understanding of the devices that the 44th relies on is slipping ever more and they search intensively for ways to stop or compensate for this. Compared to other remnants of the saurai civilization, they are fairly low-tech, but still can press a strong tech advantage against most civilizations. They are currently in a seemingly endless war against their nemesis, the 56th independent legion. Survival rates of the conscrips are low, and there are incentives for voluntary (and longer-term) service.
The 44th is about equally capitalist as it is communist, but left-leaning as a whole. (combining it in the concept of 'neo-communism'). It is a highly surveilled nation, with only a small number of privacy protection laws, though said laws are clearly defined and closely regarded. In dealing with outsiders, the people and their government are kind, sometimes seen as naive, but they are notoriously vindictive when truly wronged. Crime is practically non-existent, mainly due to lack of scarcity, close surveillance and the threat of immediate conscription (or inexplicable dissapearance). Notable is the presence of a nobility in a sorta-kinda-maybe communistic state.
The faction that I will RPing as is an isolated fragment of the 44th, and may evolve rather drastically.
Respiratory Gas: Oxygen (both halfbloods and fullbloods)
Base Form: Humanoid (both haflbloods and fullbloods)
Life span: The avarage lifespan of halfbloods is around 35 (75 if you don't count conscript casualties). The average lifespan of fullbloods is 200-300 years.
Intelligence (scale of 1-10 10 being like forerunner and 1 being cavemen): for both halfbloods and fullbloods intelligence is usually a solid 6 or 7, occasionally more, but scientific interest is (to the dismay of the leadership) quite low.
Natural defenses/abilities: nothing more or less than a human for halflboods, fullbloods can use very limited psychokinesis, but are otherwise identical to halfbloods.
Aggression: (Scale 1-10) 4 or 5 for both fullbloods and halfbloods.
Information:
Halfbloods are an extremely human-like boo-engineered subhuman species made in an attempt to replicate humans using highly modified saurai genes as source material. Without the preventative medication programme (which completes at age 19) halfbloods are extremely likely to contract virulent forms of cancer.
Fullbloods are a result of the same processes, but are genetically and physically less similar to humans. Fulbloods do not age beyond an apparent age of ~45 at any point in their theoretically limitless lives. Without advanced medical assistance, they fullblood/halfblood or fullblood/human couples cannot have children as they use a different molecule for genetic coding. Many fullbloods struggle with depression and/or PTSS.
Military Doctrine: Focus on relatively large, powerful spacecraft with lots of guns of varying sizes. Peace through superior firepower.
Foreign policy: Assimilation through exposure or get rich trying.
Technological Age (Years beyond RL earth):I'd hazard a guess at 50k on avarage. I really suck at guessing these kinds of ages though. The larger scale stuff like spacecraft is considerably more advanced (100k+) than their smaller troop-level tech, which is in most areas more like poorly-designed PMT with fancy materials.
FTL Capabilities:
Rift Drive - doesn't work. kaputt. completely useless. Most ships still have them regardless.
Hopskotch - an abomination of science combining several not-quite-properly-FTL drive systems into one. Useful for inter and intra system travel, but causes structural damage to the ship whenever it's used. speed can be anywhere from 3-500c on the ships I'll be using, this may improve over time due to the increased dependence on this system.
Military Information:

spacecraft
3 terranoid class tactical carriers
12 usurper class cruisers (standard pattern)
24 usurper class cruisers (logistics pattern)
62 civillian usurper class trade ships.
1 Vengeance Class frigate (rogue pattern)
19 Xotl class orbital cruisers

strike craft
26 Paraxus Class multi-role orbital fighter
12 Talan Class Orbital interceptors
29 Zargon Class orbital fighters
37 tailbiter aerofighters.
NS activity: it has its ups and downs, but I'm not planning on going anywhere in the summer holidays so it should be fairly high for quite some time.
Technological Bases: custom. (ICly: saurai tech base)
Prior RP links: a slow-but steady one, continued from two previous threads

Sertek was a beautiful planet once, long ago. Probably. Harrad, or anyone else, didn't really know when or why the standard legion had abandoned it either. In any case, Harrad was sure that the reason Sertek was abandoned had to with why the distraught looking planet looked the way it did currently. Though a small planet, the mass was pretty consistent with other formerly saurai planets - indicating the previous inhabitants may have meddled with the planets soft inner workings, or so the colonists feared. Initial geological surveys indicated that it was at least possible the high average density was due to a large metal core - still liquid for some unknowable reason after all this time. Harrad put on the black jacket, adorned with small bits of silver according to his rank, that was the only difference between the civil and military uniform. He sighed and stepped out of the dusky hallway of the overgrown ruins of an apartment that he had made into his home. He had been informed that the Metallurgy & Armaments Department scientists had found something "quite interesting". Upon reviewing his own sanity, he decided for that better and took along his trusty mark two pennygun from the improvised umbrella-rack. In his experience, when dealing with the Metallurgy & Armaments Department, "quite interesting" tended to translate into "quite troublesome".
The backed out bit near the galactic core. Technically I'll have no control where I'll end up initially (if I get accepted), so feel free to randomly place me anywhere if it suits you.

territory information:
Number of systems: 1
Sertek system information:
Sertek: main sequence star of unkown age. 0.96 solar masses
Sertek I: the only inhabitable body in the system. Contains many saurai ruins. It's in a pretty rough state. It has no moons. planet diameter is roughly 7200km. Gravitational acceleration at the surface ranges from 9.79 to 9.84 metres per second squared.
Sertek II: a relatively small gas giant. Atmospheric composition indicates it may have been subjected to intensive orbital bombardment ("burned") at some point. It has no moons.
OOC, this nation is an autonomous exclave, but will ICly (rather firmly) assert that they are representing the whole of the 44th on diplomatic occasions. Please take their IC aspirations of grandeur and power with several grams of salt.
Post makes no damn sense.
You make a hurtful haiku.

Aside from presiding over their material wealth and using it as they see fit, the Council has no power other the rest of the Kna'Menh - The race is almost totally self-autonomous, without need of a central regulatory body.

Major Civilian industries/Services:
Society and Cultural information: Little is known of the Kna'Menh culture - Indeed, the etymology of the name was only unearthed a few decades ago (Kna'Menh: lit. 'My Race'). What is known however is that the Kna'Menh live in very small groups, each of which is confined to their current living space (usually a ship), though it does not seem to have any adverse impact on their social behavior. Nano-Technology wouldn't grant true Telepathy. If may provide nan-tech based point to point communications. All telepathic as a result of their advanced nanotechnology, the Kna'Menh are naturally very uniform in their thoughts and mannerisms. Since their arrival in the system around 3,500 years ago, there have been no reports of internal tensions between the Kna'Menh. Secretive yet inquisitive, the Kna'Menh readily use their advanced technology to observe other races for dozens, if not hundreds of years, gathering all visual and communicative data they can before they make their move.Having your people effectively escape the effects of the Great War would be game-breaking and unfair to the other players without proper and detailed reasons as to how they survived untouched by the War. You current setup circumvents to pre-established Cannon of the Group. There have been scattered reports of races across the galaxy being abducted by the Kna'Menh, and aside from first-contact meeting footage between the Kna'Menh and other races, all knowledge of the race comes from these abduction testaments. This is effectively Gos-Modding all the other players in the Group.

N/A, the Niteris use no flag.

Civilization Name: The Niteris.
Government type: Council-type oligarchy.
Home/Capital planet: Damulaan
Government Information: Each planet is lorded over by an informal council of elders, 'elder' in this sense simply meaning the first few souls to enter the real world. Because the Niteris has only recently entered the cosmos after a hiatus of aeons, its government is still in its infancy, if it can be said to be there at all. In a real sense, the daily functions of the government are carried out by complex systems of Artificial Intelligences, individual Niteris really only spending their days shambling about and taking part in various recreational activities, however gruesome or macabre those may be. Though once a highly complex and bustling republic, the Niteris of the present are ruled more by simple strongmen, incoherently debating each other over the vague directions of policy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Population: 1.5 billion Niteris are present in the real world at the current moment.
Species name: Niteris.
Founding Species: Niteris.
Other Species: N/A
Major Civilian industries/Services: Heavy industry, stellar lifting, programming, weapons manufacturing, genetic engineering, gene manipulation
Society and Cultural information: The Niteris of the present have no coherent society or culture, language, when not directly transfered between individuals, is audible only as a horrible screeching banshee's wail of binary, clicks, whistles, and static. However, the Niteris have a universal sort of rage and bitterness over their present state as mechanical automatons, mostly spending their days languishing their fate and fighting over scraps of biological matter, either smashing it into their heads in a sad mimicry of eating or trying to hide their mechanical forms in a cloak of flesh. Though a small class of engineers oversee the production and upkeep of the repairbots that keep everything automated and functioning, there is little in the sense of an economy. The species shambles around the ancient and dilapidated ruins of their once great civilization, bartering with each other over useless trinkets and bits of flesh.
Respiratory Gas: N/A, the Niteris do not breathe.
Base Form: Carbon.
Life span: Theoretically infinite. Their bodies are mechanical in nature and contain repairing nanites. In addition, copies of their minds are stored in constantly updating information hubs connected to the vast factories that produce their bodies, ensuring that the destruction of one of their bodies is not a permanent faith.
Intelligence (scale of 1-10 10 being like forerunner and 1 being cavemen): 9.9, though the expression of the unbridled intelligence is muddled somewhat by their scatterbrained nature. Aeons of stasis followed by a not entirely well coordinated transfer to mechanical bodies, and the resulting mental illnesses, have generally frazzled their minds. Though still capable of that sort of intelligence, it is fragmented and rare.
Natural defenses/abilities: The unique makeup of their bodies ensure that they are, on average, extremely tough. Being made entire of what is in effect armour will do that. As a result of their mechanical nature, Niteris are extremely strong. Individuals contain specialized circulatory systems built into their frames that pump specialized nanite swarms to injured areas of their body, rapidly reparing them, though they must replace these canisters fairly regularly.
Aggression: Eight out of ten, though this comes with a bit of explanation. As of current, the Niteris are still in the early stages of their civilization, and continue to experience a collective hate and rage over the discovery that they have been living a lie and became unfeeling mechanical beings against their will and, as a result, are quite hostile. However, this will die down as time goes on.
Information: The Niteris were once a biological race native to the planet Niteri, which orbited a dying star. Though they were hardy enough to eke out a living, the harsh conditions of living on a smoldering, radioactive planet was sure to doom the Niteris long before they could achieve spaceflight. The Niteris were a peaceful, intelligent, and quickly advancing species, but the effects of their home planet was having devastating effects on their very being, ranging from their reproductive to immune systems.

The Omnocracy took pity on the Niteris, transporting their race in giant shuttles to the nearby habitable world of Damulaan. But even though the Omnocracy effectively saved the Niteris from extinction by transporting them, there remained severe problems with their genetic code as a result of influence from their star, and the sudden transfer to a new ecosystem was hardly helping things. To overcome this shortfall, the Niteris poured their efforts into mastering genetic engineering, gene manipulation, and cybernetics. The Niteris soon achieved spaceflight and spread their republic across the stars. This was many millions of years ago. Now, the thing about the unique nature of the Niteris and gene manipulation/augmentation is that there are only so many avenues to take, so many patches to slap on. In order to facilitate greater advancement in the hopes of closing the 'hole' in Niteris gene code and the gaps in its DNA, the Niteris began creating lifeforms in their own image on various semi-habitable worlds, and thus creating lifeforms in a similar situation as the early Niteris.

This was done to see how they naturally developed, to discover new ideas of how to patch their own corruption and errors. Now the problem with doing that, other than the shady ethics, was that eventually this began to be looked upon negatively by many of the species the Niteris created. The problem for these doomed scientific subjects is that they were just guinea pigs, nothing more. They had no way to resist. The more moral members of the Omnocracy took grievance with this and quietly supplied the subject races, allowing them to eventually revolt. The Niteris had not anticipated such an event. The war was long and agonizing. Though the Niteris possessed a clear numerical and technological superiority, it could not readily replace losses and, as a result of their biology, died in droves. To compensate, the Niteris engineered and bred massive armies of slave-soldiers, drowning the rebellion against their rule in a sea of blood and bodies.

In the hopes of preventing further bloodshed, the Omnocracy created and unleashed a powerful and untraceable virus that swept their slave armies, rendering the Niteris almost completely defenceless. On the brink of losing the war, staring into the eyes of extinction, the Niteris turned to a previously unexplored road, one of mechanization. Cybernetic augmentation made the Niteris stronger, more resilient. It created merciless and unbeatable armies of machine men that brought the war to a rapid close, cleansing the homeworlds of their rebellions creations in radioactive fire. With their empire in ruins, the Niteris' borders slowly contracted until it contained only its core, completely sealed off from the galaxy at large. No contact was had, and the great race of Niteris, masters of genetics and robotics, slipped into the myths of time. The few remaining survivors sealed themselves away in planet-spanning underground tomb-vaults, where they awaited in stasis until the powerful, god-like AI that controlled the complexes could engineer a miracle cure for them. And in the cold darkness of those tomb-vaults they waited. Aeons passed, millions of years.

Until now.

As time passed, the AI that controlled the facilities grew more desperate, unable to even gather together enough original Niteris genetic material to fix the gaping holes in their genetic code. They had crossed a threshhold that could not be returned from. As a parent would comfort a terminal child, so did the AI comfort the comatose Niteris with all the tools at its disposal. It created a vast informational matrix, an exact replica of the cosmos. It recreated all the events leading up to the super virus. The minds of the Niteris were uploaded directly into this galaxy, where their empire remained all powerful, they ruled the galaxy in its entirety, and all of their problems had been cured. As the race slumbered in peace, the AI tried in vane to fix them. Finally, it accepted such a task's impossibility, and used the last of its power to create great automated factories that would rebirth the Niteris as machines. But it did not have the power to turn the factories on.

That is until foreign explorers stumbled upon the fabled ruins of the Niteris homeworld, long thought destroyed aeons before the Galactic War. They found the entrances to the tomb-vaults, not wanting to let such a discovery to go to waste. In an instant, the tomb-vaults were powered once more, the factories sputtering to life. Using what resources were on hand, doors opened across the artificial galaxy, pulling curious Niteris out of their perfect lives in paradise and thrusting them into the cruel reality, only to find themselves in a cold and unfeeling metal shell. Collectively, they fell into despair, rage and anger and hatred boiling over. Savagely they tore the explorers apart, the once proud species now little more than twisted metal abominations. So was the rebirth of the Niteris, so was the bloody dawn of a new age.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Military Doctrine: A combined arms method is used. Automated drone ships are used to harass and position enemy fleets on the ground so that the primary Niteris-piloted ships can crush them. Drones are the leviathan's tentacles to the Niteris ship's terrorizing maw. Hammer and anvil. On the ground, expendable drones are sent to weaken and harass the enemy, softening them for the formidable Niteris Phalanx. The Phalanx shambles forward under cover of devastating artillery bombardments, their terrifyingly powerful troops breaking the enemy to pieces under the pressure of continuous attack. Besides being well armoured, individuals in the Phalanx are provided personal shielding, ensuring that the close ranks of the Phalanx are protected from enemy fire.
Foreign policy: Foreign policy is confusing and muddled, not unlike the Niteris in their current state. Though it can be said that the Niteris wish to reassert themselves as a dominant player on the galactic state, the methods of this change rapidly. Though cooperation is viewed as better than outright war with most nations, it will bully lesser powers mercilessly if given the chance. In addition, a general policy of extermination for species it views as occupying the Niteris core space has been activated.
Technological Age (Years beyond RL earth): Hard to describe, though it can be said that (like many others in the galaxy), they developed so differently and are so much older so as to make calculations like that impossible.
FTL Capabilities: Interdimensional manipulation combined with 'scattershot' travel. Wormholes are opened up that pass through an alternate dimension. Ships, when they activate such an ability, break apart into trillions of tiny parts and travel beyond the speed of light through said wormholes, arranging themselves back into their proper forms just before escaping the end of said wormholes and arriving at their destination.
Military Information: The military is divided into the Celestial Fleet and the Surface Infantry. The Celestial Fleets are made up of small numbers of large, powerful ships in the midst of many small, weaker, automated ships. The Fleet is meant as a method transporting soldiers from one place to another and for support in military operations, such as orbital bombardment. The Surace Infantry are exactly what they appear to me, infantry troops carried by the Fleet for the seizing and holding of planetary objectives. They fight in dedicated phalanxes.

The joke is lost on me apparently.

The joke is that one of the favorite whipping boys of the Advice/Argument threads is stealth. There are long and detailed explanations of why stealth in space is basically impossible.

Generally, any stealth device is going to pretty much require you to obscure ALL EM emissions from your ship. Which in turn means that your ship will not be receiving any EM emissions. That means your ship is basically going to be flying blind.

And, of course, all that EM energy has to go somewhere. So any stealth ship is going to need MASSIVE heat sinks in order to stay stealthy and avoid instantly cooking its crew alive.

But all that only applies if you care about science and such.

I'd just use whatever will be thrown at me. But the passengers of the shuttle would most certainly be grateful for someone or something other than void space, because it means some small shimmer of hope...

so, do as you prefer
