This. Tantalus, however, will go one step further and continue a campaign of sporadic attacks long after it reclaims her independence.

I would suggest 150-250 years or so. Fresh enough that our people will remember the consolidation of the cluster, yet long enough for the Republic to have some significant foothold.

That's a good question, I imagine we'd have some old and some young civilizations here at the start of the RP though the Republic could have existed long ago and have been updated over time to include more.

This, basically. Founding members would most likely fight to ensure the continuation of the republic.
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

I'd say we have it be only ten thousand years old, my own nation will be a founder and be on the side of the continuation of the Republic.

Great idea. As for sovereignty, how much independence should member states have? Should it be like a Star Wars Galactic Republic, or like a Halo Covenant?

I think a few basic laws should be in place over a galactic scale for members and that the enforcers of such laws can be mine own people as well.

Other than that they should have a lot of independent control.

I'd also suggest portions of each member nation's army and GDP be sent to the Republic's treasury and Army to give member nations incentives to stay.

I envision Toishima having been subjugated into the Republic about a few hundred years ago, allowing for massive battlefields and ship wrecks to still be drifting around out there, yet long enough for the Imperial Military to have put out a whole new fleet and armies and such. We would definitely be joining the rebellion once it begins.

I believe that the enforcers of the law should initially be like a UN peacekeeping force, with each civilization contributing some troops and ships. This could be replaced once the rebellion begins and civilizations start withdrawing their support. This could also bring the fight closer to each other, since we would have troops stationed all over the galaxy and probably near targets of opportunity.

Where would the 'capital' of this GR be? Will it be mobile (switching planets) or a central, neutral place?

I'd vote for a Coruscant-like planet controlled by one of the founding members, perhaps myself.

Aha, I've even better idea than a mere planet. Also, I'd still like to be the civilization in charge of maintaining and enforcing the basic laws of the Republic.

So basically you're going to be sort of like the USA? =P

I believe we should not have a civilization in charge of a single thing. We could have ministers for different roles, like in the UN. Still, as stated before, it will be hopelessly corrupt that your guy just gets voted in every time. This could be extended to the command over the peacekeeping forces as well.

No, my people won't be making the laws, just enforcing whatever the Republic decides is the law. They'll also be mostly AI so you can totally trust them.

And hopefully I'll be nothing like the US.

Oh, I have been away for so long I hardly remember what everyone here was. Will there be a standardised language?

And the US thing was a joke, please do not be offended.

Haha, don't worry, I got it.

A standardized language? Well, perhaps there will be a bit of a one created by my people except it might not be wide-spread. Another piece on the app could be the fluency and spread of that language within people's own nations ranging from a barely used second or third language to their primary one.

Okay - I've changed it around slightly, got other suggestions and thoughts?

Toishima wrote:This being forced to join the Galactic Republic doesn't sit well with me. My entire civilization's premise is to be a quiet, xenophobic Empire that others may be aware of, but only in passing. Being pressed into the GR would mean there was probably a war of some kind in the past because of my civilization's attitude to outsiders, which means my UNSC-style military would probably be utterly trashed before the RP even starts.

If you ask me, this GR could exist, but we should be able to choose if we want to be a part of it or not.

EDIT: posting from phone at 3am, please excuse me if I sound rude.

What you could do is be at the outer rim of the galaxy, and thus have little interaction with the central government, or your other idea.

Edit: new idea. Everyone collectively owns our version of Coruscant, though maybe some more than others. A few larger empires could use their power to essentially become autonomous, not paying tribute and such, and essentially being able to do what they want, because the Republic is so weak and corrupt.

Edit 2.0: also, since I'm planning on making a very big non-FAR FT roleplay soon, would anyone be interested?

I'd like to know what its about.

As for the app, it looks fine, but perhaps its time for a new OOC under a new name.

Not just yet I think, I believe we should sort out a couple more details and then post it.

For example, a new app and also a suggestion for FTL.

On the app: I don't see any reason why nanotech and biotech should stand out. If we're putting profiency in there, we should add spaceflight, physics, energy weapons, kinetic weapons, gravitic manipulation, construction, energy shielding.....

Or just take those off.

Those two just came to mind - they're useful for putting down information on the technological advancement of civilizations so people can know what they can and can't do. Other types of technology will be put down soon enough.
