MOSLEM ATTACK ON HINDIAN DIRECTOUR

THE directour of the Hindia Belandan National Security Service (Nationale Veiligheidsdienst/NATVEI), Mr. Poernomo Sugih, yesterday was the target of a suspected assassination attack by a man believed to have held radical Moslem tendencies. Mr. Sugih was reportedly holidaying on the island of Pulau Pengasingan, off the coast of the Hindia Belandan province of South Senjani, where he keeps a holiday house, when an attempt was made on his life around noon. He was not injured in the attempted assassination and has returned to Batavia, the assailant being shot dead by Mr. Sugih's own NATVEI officers only moments before he was allegedly to fire.

In response to the attempted attack on Mr. Sugih, the Prime-Minister of Hindia Belanda, Mme. Antje Moeljani, cut short her visit to Kota Hantu Putih in Southeastern Malaya after the attack, where she was attempting to broker appeasement talks with the secessionist movement in the autonomous territory which has in recent times been beset with conflict. Mme. Moeljani returned to Batavia immediately, where she called an emergency Sunday meeting with her Cabinet.

The attack has re-ignited concerns over the liberalisation of the centuries-old prohibition of Mohammedanism by those domiciled within this Realm, which was implemented late last civil year in a bid to improve relations with majority Mohammedan states, such as Hindia Belanda which shares its Sovereign with Nordenstate. Mr. John Hallinger, the Conservative Knight for the North Riding of Barminstershire, suggested to the Regal Post that Great Nortend is increasingly vulnerable to such attacks on her soil, owing to the lack of sufficient monitoring of the persons admitted into the Chantry ward scheme.

The King's Clerk, Sir Aaron Billings, moved to quash any fears of a similar attack on any of His Majesty's subjects or any visitors to Great Nortend. “We must also clearly distinguish between ordinary and pious Mohammedans, who as we Christians worship and praise God, and Moslems who use their religious texts to further their own temporal interests and personal vendettas.” Sir Aaron praised the work of the Police and armed forces in tracking down and dealing with threats and said that the chance of such an attack is so low that no one should have Moslem terrorists to worry about when going about his daily activities.

NIDWALDESTER AIRCRAFT LOST

THE Nidwaldester flag carrier, Air Nidwalden, on Friday announced that it had “lost contact” with Flight No. AI380 from Saint Moritz over the Atlpacinarcticadian Sea, carrying 211 souls on board. The aircraft, an Airbus Class A340, was flying to Varen Livet, a stopover before continuing to its scheduled destination of Batavia. The Lorecian Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (LORCONTROL) confirmed that the last communication with the aircraft was received at 18·36 Dymes time or 19·06 Saint Moritz time.

According to a letter circular sent from the lady Prime Minister of Nidwalden on Saturday, there are believed to have been 93 Hindia Belandan, 59 Nidwaldester, 49 Valkean, 9 Nordenstater, 7 Scanonian, 4 Aswickan, 4 Albish, 3 Cadenzan, 2 Kelonnan and 2 Nikolian subjects on board. It is not believed that any Erbonian subjects were on board the Air Nidwalden flight, although consular assistance is available to all Erbonian subjects abroad where the Crown maintains consular services.

Mrs. Charlotte Mann, the Nidwaldester Prime Minister, expressed hope in her letter to fellow regional leaders of government that a successful rescue of all souls will be possible, although with every passing hour the chances reduce of finding all 211 persons alive. Mrs. Mann called on international assistance to facilitate a hasty rescue operation, a request whereto the government of Hindia Belanda has acquiesced. Madame Antje Moeljani, the Prime Minister of Hindia Belanda, confirmed in a letter seen by the Regal Post that the Hindia Belandan government would commit to search and rescue efforts. Six Hindia Belandan Air Force aircraft and two naval ships on patrol have been dedicated by the Commonwealth Government towards this admirable cause.

The incumbent Lord High Treasurer, The Duke of Limmes, said yesterday on Sunday that the Government was looking into ways in which it could also assist the rescue efforts, although none of its subjects are directly affects. Two Navy Royal aircraft and crew have been provided by the Admiralty as the Erbonian contribution to this international cause, and the Archbishop of Sulthey too on Saturday announced that a special Orandum had been authorised for the Daily Office and Mass beginning at Saturday Vespers, to be prayed immediately after the Collect of the Day.

At the time of going to print, the search continues for the aforementioned 211 souls.

May Almighty God hearken unto all them who call upon Him, and conduct them in the perils of the great deep to safety.

DE STORNTON ATTENDS EMBER DAY MASS

SPENCER de Stornton, the present Comptroller of the Exchequer and the man tipped to become the kingdom's next Lord High Treasurer, yesterday attended the Ember Wednesday mass celebrated by the Lord Archbishop of Sulthey, Cardinal Dr John Williams, at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Laurence of Sulthey following the Houses of Commons' going into recess on Tuesday for Christmas. Mr de Stornton processed into the cathedral at 11 a.m. with the choir, monks and ministres, and sat in the quire as one of His Majesty's Privy Counsellours wearing his ministerial robe.

Mr de Stornton's attendance at the Mass strongly hints towards his being approached for the position given his prominence there. It is believed that in a vote held on Monday amongst members of the Commons, Mr de Stornton was elected as the proposed candidate. His office would not be pressed, however, on whether he will become the next Lord High Treasurer, stating that it was a matter for the King. Certainly, however, an invitation to attend Mass with none other than the Lord Archbishop and Primate himself bodes well for Mr de Stornton's leadership and political aspirations.

The familiar introit Rorate cœli desuper was chaunted to a short figured chaunt by Manmiller with the Graduals, Tollite portas and Prope est Dominus, Offertory, Ave Maria, and Communion, Ecce virgo chaunted full, plain, plain and full respectively. The ordinary of the Mass was the figured chaunt Missa adventi by Rolstave. After the Mass, whereat Mr de Stornton took communion, the Hour of Nones was chaunted.

DE DUAL FRANCHISE IN COVERTURE—SIR EDWIN BARTLEBY, Burg.

THE next general election is scheduled to be held next year on St Peter's Day, coincidentally a Saturday, when nearly 21 million subjects will be eligible to vote for their next Member of Parliament, and consequently, our next Lord High Treasurer and Government. However, of these 21 million subjects, more than one third will in fact not have the freedom to choose whose name to tick at the ballot box. These feminæ covertæ, the legal term for married women, surrender their right to vote for their own candidate to their husbands, whose vote is taken to be the vote of them both. This archaic doctrine is known as the doctrine of coverture, and clearly acts as a shackle upon the independence of women and their rights as a free subject of the Crown to vote.

Great Nortend began the enfranchisement of the fairer sex in Parliamentary elections under the Ministry of de Foide, the matter being considered impossible under the strongly conservative reign of Edmund IX. “Maidens and spinster ladies” living in Parliamentary boroughs and over the age of twenty-one were given the privilege of voting in 1956. Three years later, now under the Chesvoir Ministry, this was extended to all women over the age of twenty-one living in either boroughs or county constituencies. Millions of women were thus granted suffrage and it appeared that Great Nortend had finally taken the step towards fully representative democracy.

Alas, this universal suffrage was short lived. Immediately after the next election where the Droughers' majority reduced to ten, twenty-seven writs of scire facias were issued by discontented Scodelier candidates who had failed to win seats held by the Droughers, apparently owing to female votes. The test case of Lewis v. Armitage, decided in 1963 in the Court of Counsellours, decided in favour of the plaintiff, Mr. William Lewis, and declared that Mr. Peter Armitage had not been validly elected the Knight of the Shire for Bissex Cranshire.

The unanimous judgment of the bench, which included the Lord High Chancellour and the Lord Chief Justice as well as Lords Justices French, Gavotty and Roger-Castles, was that whilst feminæ covertæ could vote, they were bound to vote consistently with their husbands. Why? It was held by their Lordships that as a bachelor could not vote for two candidates at the same time, a husband and wife could not vote for two candidates either, as it would entail the separate existence of the wife apart from her husband, which the regular law cannot comprehend except with the intervention of statutes.

As a result, twenty-seven election results were overturned and in new elections held in accordance with the law as discovered by the Court of Counsellours, twelve Scodelier candidates won seats from their Drougher incumbents, resulting in the collapse of the Chesvoir Ministry and the appointment of the Duke of Bokewell as the Scodelier Lord High Treasurer. In other words, without the forced conversion of the votes of married women from their preferred candidate to the candidate of their husbands, the incumbent Drougher MPs would have retained their seats and the Chesvoir Ministry returned to power. The entire course of modern Erbonian politics was changed by the operation of the archaic doctrine of coverture.

How can we as a proud nation claim that we are a democratic society when married women are still forced to vote for their husbands' candidates? Perhaps, Mrs. Suzanne Collins, leader of the Albish Liberal Party, and the Nidwaldester Wort newspaper were in fact correct when they described Great Nortend as an “extremely authoritarian state” and “undemocratic”. The incoming Lord High Treasurer, if he be Mr. Spencer de Stornton or someone else, should introduce legislation to correct this historic injustice against the ladies of the Kingdom forthwith, or be forever known as yet another man who refused to give married women the freedom to vote for whomsoever they choose.

of Nortend and Hambria King, Lord of Cardoby, of his other Dominions Emperor, and of the Church Mundane Supreme Governour and Vicar of Christ,
to all whom these Presents shall come,
Image

On Christmas Day this year we once again remember the holy virgin birth of our Lord Jesus Christ Two thousand and nineteen years ago in Bethlehem, the City of David.

Since our last Christmas Letter to you, our beloved subjects, the Astyrian region has been plagued by martial conflict and crisis in Belka and Arstotska, and only in the three months which have passed this year, 221 souls on board a Nidwaldester aircraft are presumed to have died following its disappearance late last month. Closer to home, though our Government has achieved a great reduction in the prevalence of vagrancy and poverty, there are still thousands of men, women and even children in dire need of assistance.

In such trying times, we may feel compelled to lose faith in God, for if He is truly a merciful God, for whom everything is easy, how does He let these tragedies occur? Why does the Lord not heed our prayers and save His people?

We ourselves have contemplated this question many times over this year, and find ourselves rather strengthened in our faith in God. Priests may often attribute perceived failings of the divine to His working in “mysterious ways”. Though the impious may scoff thereat, we will do well to recall that in the Book of Isaiah, the Lord said that “neque viæ vestræ viæ meæ”. Our ways and not His ways, and no mortal man can predict or know God's plan.

Indeed, throughout the troubles of the last year and this year, we have been inspired by the work of many of our subjects, whether it be sending alms and humanitarian assistance to Northern Lorecia, or in providing manpower in the search for the missing aircraft. We are even inspired by the selfless efforts of those in our own parishes, villages, towns and cities who dedicate their time and money towards helping the poor, mean and lowly.

We too are reminded that when our Lord Jesus Christ came into the world on this day so many years ago, he was not begotten in a grand mansion or a splendid castle. He was, as Luke tells us, born in Bethlehem, and laid in a manger and visited by shepherds, for there was not even for the Lord himself any room in the inn. Yet despite His humble enfleshment, His life managed to inspire billions of people around the world, who call themselves Christians.

One such person is the Lord High Almoner, the Rt Rev'd Peter Wylde, Bishop of Tow. Every year since 1933, the Lord High Almoner holds the Christmas Appeal for those in need. We ourselves have this Advent season been touched by the fifty orphans who are under the care of the Black Monks of St Peter's Cathedral. Many grow up to serve our Church themselves, either by entering into holy orders or taking vows. Others advance themselves in trades, commerce or professions. Last year, through your generous donations, the monks were able to refurbish the orphanage building and for the first time, provide a heated dormitory for the boys for the colder months.

These monks are not alone by far. Hundreds of institutions, both religious and secular, provide homes for orphan children and the poor. Most are funded by rents and revenues from land-holdings generously donated to them. However, for many, this is not enough to support their charitable works, let alone their spiritual duties.

We hope that this Christmastide all those who can spare it will choose to help to improve the lives of thousands of children, indigents and ordinary persons, by donating to the Lord High Almoner's Christmas Appeal. Even a farthing is greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, we would like to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas. May the Almighty bless you and guide us all towards a future of peace and goodwill.

COCOA IMPORT DUTY REDUCTION MOOTED

THE Foreign Clerk, Sir George Drachington, yesterday mooted the reduction in the duties payable for the import of cocoa beans and other raw cocoa products and preparations. In a address to the Blackhelm Confederacy Chamber of Commerce in Great Nortend at their annual Christmas Dinner, Sir George told the assembled trade and business grandees that the Government was looking to reduce barriers for the import of specialty BC goods into Great Nortend which could not be sourced or manufactured in Great Nortend, singling out cocoa as an example of a product which cannot be grown and produced in the temperate climate of the Erbonian Isles.

Currently there is a tariff on the import of cocoa applied by weight of £8·13·0 per ton for dried cocoa beans. Sir George hinted at the halving or even complete removal of the duty for cocoa beans, which he noted makes chocolate in Great Nortend far more expensive than in Lorecia or Teudallum.

Mr. Albert Little, of Little's Chocolate, tentatively welcomed the possibility of reduced duties. Mr. Little, however, warned that any reduction in tariffs must be limited to raw cocoa products, and not manufactured chocolate products, as liberalisation of the latter would undoubtedly flood the Erbonian market with cheap, unhealthy and poor quality chocolate. Mr. Granger, the Managing Directour of Petersall's Confectionary Co., agreed, stating that as long as confectionery ration books rationed by price rather than quantity, cheap chocolate imports with high sugar content would be highly detrimental to the national health.

TIPPETS ARE IN, SAYS MRS. GOULD

ASTUTE observers of ladies’ fashions will have undoubtedly noticed the resurgence in the popularity of day tippets amongst the fashionable set this winter season after they were packed away more than a decade earlier.

This winter’s milder weather has reduced the need for coats to be kept on indoors this year. Though they have generally been regarded as suitable for travelling attire, they are now worn under coats by ladies who are pleased to shew off their splendidly tippets when making day calls in the parlours of society.

Mrs. Gould, the eminent dressmaker to ladies such as the Duchess of Alvington and Lady Charlotte de Covinge, told the Regal Post that en vogue tippets this year have been spotted with warm miniver, grys and sable linings and trimmings. More affordable tippets have been seen with lamb’s wool lining and trimming, although these are only seen on the more middling type of lady.

As for fabric, Mrs. Gould notes that the most fashionable appears to be fine printed worsted in paisleys or miniatures, although solid or chequered woollens and silks have also been seen worn by ladies of the highest elegance.

REFERENDUM TO AMEND CITIZENSHIP ACT GETS HER MAJESTY'S ASSENT

National Referendum to be held on 11th February

Heleventia:Her Majesty's Office on Public Relations here released yesterday that the referendum to amend the Citizenship Act 1890 will be held on 11th February, after having received Her Majesty's Assent.

The referendum was initiated by a social interest group SOI L'Harve last year. It seeks to terminate the citizenship of naturalised citizens or citizens whose parents were naturalised if they have been convicted of imprisonment of more than 2 years under both civil and criminal law. The exact terms of the referendum question reads as follow:

"Should the citizenship of those persons, who have been convicted of an offence, resulting in an imprisonment of not less than 2 years (i.e. 2years or more) under Her Majesty's civil and/or criminal law, be terminated?"

Marine Mergois, a member of the SOI, who has been campaigning for this legislation explains on the group's website,"Just go outside St. Louis Central Station. You see all these drug pedlars, drug dealers, anti social characters. It does not look like Mizialand at all. Visit any prison. I mean any. You will find 70% of the incarcerated are immigrants. We have really gone wrong somewhere. Something has to be done to realise the conception of Mizialand Uber Alles and M4M (Mizialand for Mizia). Our taxpayers money cannot be wasted upon such people. They have violated their oath of citizenship."

If the vote is positive for the first national referendum of this year, the Parliament will be obliged to bring in a bill to this effect. However the passage of the bill depends on the Parliament's vote. Given that the current SPACIYA coalition has not been very vocal about immigration related issues and different parties in this coalition have often expressed diverging views regarding immigration, the fate of such a proposed bill will be in doldrums. Moreover, if the bill is not passed, it will amount to a loss in confidence of the Parliament in HMG and may lead to resignation of this government. Since 2016, the coalition has overcome differences to maintain majority on key issues. It remains to be seen whether the coalition will be able to agree on this issue.

When Ms. Mergois was asked about the constitutional validity of such a legislation, she replied that law operates equally among the equal. She was referring to the the doctrine of 'equal protection of law' which states that like must be treated alike. For this purpose Her Majesty's Government must make 'reasonable classification' provided such 'classification' is 'homogenous' and 'for a defined objective'. In this case conviction of more than two years is classified as 'citizen by birth/descent' or 'citizen by naturalisation' and the objective is reduction of crime. Therefore, Ms. Mergois, argues that such a law will be constitutionally valid. This has been affirmed by Mr. George Tucker, a recognised legal expert.

The referendum does not mention the fate of those convicted accordingly. "Send them back," said Ms. Mergois when asked this question. However, given that their citizenship is terminated and they may not hold dual citizenship of their country of origin, the bill will effectively, render such people stateless, sending them back may not be in question. The provisions in this regard will become clear once a bill is drafted.

MBLM, an organisation representing the interest of Muslim immigrants has criticised this referendum, adding that it makes immigrants unwelcome in a country which has traditionally accepted people from diverse backgrounds. Barim Beglois, chairperson of MBLM said, "Mizialand is like a salad. All communities here maintain their separate identity and taken together what comes out is a beautiful mosaic of multilingualism and diversity that this crossroad of Lorecia has maintained since time immemorial. This referendum is discriminatory. "Crime is higher among Muslims only in certain area. Social exclusion and poverty are the main reasons behind it, not a particular religion. Hate the crime, not the criminal." Poverty rate have been higher among Muslims, with those of Muslim background, earning 35% less than the next highest cohort. The MBLM has maintained that it will take this matter to the Supreme Court if such a "discriminatory" law is passed.

The legistation will not affected those already convicted, unless the bill makes such provisions therof.

STORNTON OUTLINES GOVERNMENT FOCUS

YESTERDAY, on the first sitting day of Parliament in the Epiphany term, the Lamanus King of Arms announced His Majesty's Term Proclamation. The newly commissioned Lord High Treasurer, Sir Spencer de Stornton, Bart, through the proclamation, indicated that he will be taking a more proactive role in improving the quality of life in Great Nortend. Michael Blunt, the Lamanus King of Arms, told the House of Lords that “[His Majesty's] Government seeks to take greater steps towards securing a prosperous and decent future for all Nortchmen, Cardmen and Hoebridmen.”

To this end, it was announced that there would be reforms of the Public Alms schemes administered by the Lord High Almoner to ensure that those who needed assistance were being adequately supported. The Government mooted increased checks on those seeking alms from the public and parish purses, to ensure that foreigners and tourists do not have access to alms services. At the same time, residency requirements for those seeking almshouses will be reduced in an attempt to tackle chronic vagrancy, the change facilitated by the Almshouses Building Programme which will have erected over 60,000 new almshouses throughout the country by the end of 2025.

Another announcement was that the Government would reduce punitive import taxes on exotic goods such as rubber, chocolate, tea and coffee, where they pose no risk to domestic industries. De Stornton was a strong supporter of the principle as Comptroller of the Exchequer, and made some progress in reducing taxes on tropical woods, tomatoes and coconut products. Greater trade with Albeinland, Earent and Nicolia was also mooted as a possible opportunity in the future. As Lord High Treasurer, this initial move seems to indicate a desire for a more open trade environment which nonetheless upholds the basic Scodelier principle of supported protectionism. Notably, the sugar taxes will remain, which will undoubtedly disappoint children and sweet-lovers.

Other announcements made in the Term Proclamation include the reformation of the national curriculum, as hinted at earlier this year, and further expansion of the Parochial Beautification Programme to include towns. There is no doubt that Sir Stornton's first Term Proclamation has been good and well-draughted. It has been well-received, too, by both sides of politics as a natural evolution of the nationalist Scodelier conservatism. Only time will tell, however, whether this will prove to be beginner's luck or a sign of a shrewd political mind in the making.

» Special commission will be created to monitor harsh winter, government says
» The committee will be composed by the secretaries of environmental affairs, healthcare and infrastructure, as well as the Home Office

Edward Bunlow (@edbunlow)

The winter made several villages such as Penford
(pictured) be covered in snow.
CASTELBY - Today, the Environment Secretary Martha Ewart announced during a press conference the creation of a special commission to monitor meteorological activities of the season and contain possible material and physical damage that could happen in the future. According to Ewart, the committee will be composed by the secretaries of environmental affairs, healthcare, infrastructure and the Home Office. Other functions that the commission will have are medical assistance; maintenance of roads and rails in winter storms; reestablishment of essential services in affected areas and the reconstruction of fundamental infrastructure in destroyed places.

Over the day, the creation of the committee was confirmed through declarations of other cabinet members. In the morning, First Lord Clerk Arthur Arrington confirmed the announcement of his colleague and said that the plan introduced by her “proves that the government, unlike what the opposition says, cares about its citizens and the environment” and also put the Civil Defence under her disposition. Hours later, Healthcare Secretary William Frosby declared in a social media that PHS teams could be sent to affected zones, and after that, Infrastructure Secretary Anthony Wilton-Lewis stated that will support the decision.

Until now, the Prime Minister commented nothing about the decision, although he approved the same today.

Among the meteorologists of the Royal Institute of Meteorology and Climatology of Alverville, the decision has been seen as positive, since this year’s winter already worried many due to the possible devastation that it could be caused. Yet, some specialists and opposition members criticized the way that the decision has been announced, as the Shadow Environment Secretary Lindsay Wright says: "although I support some precautionary measures in this winter, the way that the government told it was terrible. The emergency tone of Mrs Ewart’s announcement could cause panic in hundreds if not thousands of farmers that now can believe that a catastrophe will occur. At these times, we must have calm and this was the thing that most lacked over this entire history.”

This year’s winter is already been considered one of the most severe of the last 50 years and is being caused due to a cold front coming from polar zones. In northern villages such as Benchester and Manbourne, thermometers registered -12,7 °C (9,14 °F) in December, while great industrial centres such as Castelby, Bedford and Belchester had temperatures close to zero. In Eidenburgh, two people died and seven were hospitalized due to hypothermia, and it’s expected that the weather will remain the same until the end of February.

» MacKinnel is the most popular president since Raibeart Bruis
» Her leadership during the Belkan Crisis and pro-Lorecian policies are the biggest reasons for high popularity

Beitidh Dunn (@beitidh_thdc)

President MacKinnel.
BALTYRE - According to a poll made by the CCC and Teachdaire, around 83% of the population sees the actual government of Ainslie MacKinnel as positive, being followed by 9% who believes that her government is regular and 4% who sees it as bad or terrible, while the remaining 4% decided to don’t answer or didn’t know. The survey had the participation of three thousand people and happened between 20 and 24 of January, with its results being launched this morning.

If these statistics are true, this makes MacKinnel the most popular president of Caledonian history since Raibeart Bruis, from the Conservative Party, who governed between 1987 and 1992 and reached the popularity of 85,6% after economic reforms that made the country left a recession. Despite always having good approval rates (which arrived at incredible 71% in the last poll) since she assumed the office, the numbers released today are a shock even to her government, who didn’t expect a percentage above the 80%.

One of the reasons for this is due to her leadership in the Belkan crisis and the military intervention in Arstotska, in which the government adopted a cooperation posture with the Lorecian Community and the Blackhelm Confederation while prioritizing the union of political parties to maintain the calm, the order and the optimism in the population when the country launched attacks against the enemy. Other strong factors considered important by many are her pro-Lorecian policies that always were an integral part of her government and despite bothering the most conservative factions of her supporters, it reflects the position of the majority of the population who wants more integration with them and even the Caledonian adhesion in the community.

Few people commented about the poll today, although sources confirm that both the Prime Minister and the President received the news in a very positive way. The opposition, however, decided to stay quiet probably until the end of the crisis.

POLAR WINDS BRING FREEZING TEMPERATURES

A COLD FRONT from the Northern Pole has brought sub-40 degrees to much of the country as far south as Tretford, Abeningham and Welecopham. Heavy snow, has blanketed most of Greater Erbonia and also lighter snow over parts of Enley, Teyshire, Swent, Dershire, Larkshire and extraordinarily, Igoddal, since before Christmas, which has wreaked havoc with canals, roads and railways. Post deliveries have been suspended over many northern counties and even telephone calls and telegraph messages have been affected by the snow. The Board of Railways announced over 100 cancellations of scheduled services, mainly along smaller branch lines, owing to the heavy snowfall.

Home Service platoons and fire brigades have taken the lead in clearing the snow from roads and pathways, aided by new advanced snow ploughs purchased from Hesover and Sons of Polton. The new ploughs are attached to large motor vehicles and can clear over 35 miles of foot-deep snow in an hour. The snow pushed to the curb has still reduced traffic flow in many towns and cities, and the 70 ft wide King's Street in King's Rhighton which normally carries three lanes of traffic each way was late yesterday down to only one lane of traffic each way.

The cold temperatures have also resulted in a large number of hospitalisations for hypothermia and winter illnesses such as influenza and pneumonia. At least twenty-three people have died since the start of the year in October from cold related conditions. Many parishes have organised winter clothes collections this year in a bid to reduce the number of deaths; however, woollen coats, scarves and stockings are not enough to keep the cold at bay for the elderly and inform.

The Government had urged people to stock up on coal and firewood before the winter snow arrived and asked pensioners and those on alms to apply for coal or firewood alms. Despite this, many dwellings still remain unheated or minimally heated during the winter. A survey of three localities earlier this month revealed that over 20 per cent of households only lit a fire in the range, despite having hearths elsewhere through their dwelling-house. The main reason was lack of fuel owing to lack of wherewithal. Many rural households have been affected by the reduction in the amount of timber allocated for fuel in common woodlands as quality wood for working becomes scarcer worldwide.
