The Scottopian Isles Telegraph, First in News for the Royal CommonWealth

EATA CLOSE IN ON FESENBUNUIL

Image

In the aftermath of the detonation of a nuclear device within the Republic of GHawkins, the Scottopian Isles was part of the quick reaction force that was accumilated by EATA forces that are now engaged in fighting the Astyrian Liberation Army within the nation of Kamalbia that hosts the terrorist organisation. The distance between the Royal CommonWealths territory, including our sea boundries, are considerably close to the ALA's operations within Kamalbia and thus are a concern to our Kingdoms security. In such, elements of the 44th Brigade of the 25th Airborne Division were part of the advance force that was deployed to the country.

Scottopian units have now entered the city of Fesenbunuil, a major city on the Kamalbian Peninsula that hosts a highway intersection leading to the interior of the heartland. Jafalan forces have control of the southern portions of the peninsula as additional EATA units put strain upon the cities defenders. When questioned about parpicipating in another overseas conflict while the Ala Moana crisis continues, the Ministry of Defense commented "The Navy & Marines are doing the best job possible in Ala Moana, and we have full faith in their capabilities to bring order to our island neighbours. However, the world doesnt stop for our own delima's. Astyria is in peril of terrorist organisations wishing to destablise the region. Our Army & Air Force have answered the call for international assistance, and we will not stand by silently. The situation that occured in GHawkins could have happened anywhere, to any nation and it still can, at any time."

Astyria: The Scottopian Isles is considered the one of the lowest Arms Manufaturers in Astyria coming in 26th of the 27 applicable nations. Below the Royal CommonWealth was Nouvel Ecosse, with Woodstead, Aurora Confederacy & Costa de Ouro bearly placing just above our nation.

Officials with the Ministries of Commrence as well as Defense didnt bother at the results, commenting the Scottopian Military builds its units as the country needs and seldom creates units for foreign forces. The last such occasion that differed was an agreement between Nikolia, who placed 22nd, and the Scottopian Isles for the production rights of a SU-35 fighter jet that became the blueprint for the SAF-25 Typhoon in exchange for production rights for the SAF-TL6 Hoku, the Scottopian Isles Air Forces transport aircraft.

Rounding the top of the list was Jenerak, Ionicus, Symphonia, Aztec National League & Mesoland. Our ally the Blackhelm Confederacy is placed 6th. The listing does not represent military numbers, material or strength, just a production ratio.

Environment: They call it Boundry Isle, and uninhabited speck of land thats what is left of an extinct volcano that pertrudes from the sea. Hundreds of miles from the nearest land mass, its one of the most isolated spots in the Royal CommonWealth that comes with a history as deep as the ocean that surrounds it. More commonly known for its bizzare ritural between our government and that of the Blackhelm Confederacy, where forces of each others navy several times a year, land upon the island and 'capture' it from the 'enemy'. Dating to the late 1930s, the Scottopians erected a flag pole to mark our claim but later that year, an Imperial response force took down the national flag & replaced it with their own. Each time one nation took down the flag, an offering was laid at its base for the soon to be arrivals. It began with the Scottopians leaving aged whiskey, but soon our counterparts across the strait in the Exponential Empire were leaving various wines for our own men. This tradition has gone on for decades, however the stance on territorial sovrengity is still as strong as the winds and tides that harrass those who find themselfs on it.

Image

But for its history that exceeds its strategic importance, the tiny outcrop has held onto a secret that has many scientists, professors, naturalists & citizens alike excited within the nation & aborad across Astyria. For at 225 feet above sea level, hanging on a rocky surface clings a small bush that soaks in the ocean spray in the warm tropical sun. Recently, four climbers employed by the University of San Joaquin at Santa Cruz, were working in the dark and found something so improbable they could hardly beleive themselves. "How they got there? We dont know" one was quoted as saying. Lets take a step back in time.

Upon arrival of the first Scottish settlers in the 13th century, the islands were vastly differnt. Exotic animals & plants from nothing like seen before in Europe awaited them, along with the indigeous natives who thrived upon this tropical landscape. Another species that thrived, and quiet well infact was the Scottopian Tree Lobster. A type of stick instect famous for its size, they were on average 8-10 inches with some individuals even making it to excess of 12 inches. The typical size of a European stick instect was 1-3 inches, but nowhere close to the width the Scottopian Tree Lobster had, its hard lobsterlike exoskeleton giving the creature its name. However, it came with a price as they were of a flightless varitey of the bug, losing the ability to fly unlike their eurasian counter parts. An early trick was to catch one and place it on the hook of your fishing line, using them as bait.

However, with the continued arrival of settlers from the old world, as did animals such as dogs, cats along with others. Naturally, with never coming into contact with these animals, the Scottopian Tree Lobster began to decline but was still a common sight in the interior of the island until the 1700s. Unfortunatly, a century later, only on outlaying islands such as the Inverclyde Isles, Huntington Isles & San Joaquin Isles held such populations as the Scottopian Tree Lobster could no longer be found in Scottopia. The last reported sighting came in 1918 on Santa Cruz, but by 1920 they were gone. In 1970, the Scottopian Isles government officially presumed the stick insect was extinct. But just this past week, the University of San Joaquin, Santa Cruz annouced that they have found a breeding population of the creature on Boundry Isle with some samples retreived and brought back to the mainland for observation and to begin conservation efforts.

Sport: The much awaited East Astyrian Football League's Sterling Quiach has reached its Semi-Final stage with all 4 team wishing to play at Colchester Arena in the final match. It will be a 'Tale of Two Cities' as our last remaining Scottopian Isles represnitation, Scottopia City, are to play host to Paradise City from the Blackhelm Confederacy while simutantiously Zelheina Football Club of Polarus will be playing away in the San Joaquin Valley against Cuidad de Fresno. All 4 teams have battled hard to gain their positions, but only a matter of luck determines which club gets to be the Home Team in these final games.

Taking a look at the events that got them here, Scottopia City, who are competing in the AIFA Champions League won their opening match at home against Vasterplatte Vikings 5-0, followed by 2-0 away win against Saqui Athletical. They first conceded a goal against Bangalla United but still pulled away with a 2-1 victory before defeating Port Elisabeth 3-1 in the Quarter-Finals. The Scottopians will take on Paradise City of the Blackhelm Confederacy in what is to be a powerhouse match-up that football fans across the region will be tuning into. The Confederate Club entered the tournament on shakey grounds with a slight 3-2 win over the Jafalan Jackals but had a more resonding Second Round Fixture as they beat Cathantaea Football Club 4-2. Their first home match was a true nailbiter as a 2-2 tie with FC Fresno led into overtime & penalties where the hosts prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to the releif of the fans. Finally in the Quarter-Finals, they travelled to compete versus Deportivo Stockton where they scraped by again with a 3-2 win. Only 1 of these sides will make it to the finals.

Cuidad de Fresno started the tournament off with a 3-2 away win versus Saints of Divinity before taking down the Blackhelm Dragons 1-0, followed by a 3-1 home win against MacKenzie City. They wernt expected to pass the likes of recent Scottopian Isles Champions New Greenock United, but they did pull it off to win another 3-1 victory by the San Joaquin side. They will take on Zelheina Football Club, who are the underdogs of the game, but they have pulled off miralces so far. The team from Polarus squeeked through to the second round with a 2-2 tie with the Scottopian Capitols that led to a 4-3 shootout for ZFC, where they went on to eliminate the bookies favorite, Selecao Azurio 2-1. Another dazzling matchup against Campo Bakersfield led to another draw with the teams level at 2, but it seems Zelheina have grown used to firing from the penalty spot as they converted all shots for a 5-3 win. With all odds stacked against them, they were thrown a bone when drawn with the tournaments Cindarealla Story, Colchester Landing Football Club. Nobody expected CLFC to make it to the Quarter-Finals, and most presume a the Final being hosted by their Home Stadium was drive to parpicapate, but the Polarus Champions dominated in possesion for a 2-0 win to make it to the Semis.

Tune in for tonights matches to see what teams make it to the 1st Sterling Quaich Final in Colchester Landing, brought to you by the East Astyrian Football League.

Firm Seeks to Rebuild Jarridian International Art and Music Gallery

Shelbin, Jarridia – Plans were revealed on Monday for the new Jarridian International Art and Music Gallery (JIAMG) in Shelbin. Holgorsen & Schmidt, an architecture firm out of Tienson, Jarridia, had been chosen this past September to head the project of rebuilding the JIAMG. “When we were approached to take on this honor we wanted to take the past into consideration,” said lead designer, Felix Montange, “We wanted to create a space that paid homage to the past, immortalize this location, but also give Shelbin a glimpse to Jarridia’s future.”

Image

It has been over three years since the terrorist attacks committed by The Christian Warriors rocked central Shelbin destroying the JIAMG and the Presidential Palace. A total of 18,673 people (Jarridians and international tourists) lost their lives that day. Though the land had been cleared and a temporary monument had been erected, many Jarridians felt it was only right to rebuild. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the plans” said Shelbin Congressional Representative, Joy Lynch. “The pride of Jarridia will be reflected through this museum. The spirit of Shelbin was not defeated on that fateful day. This new museum and spiritual center will create a place that everyone can pay respects to those that were lost.

The JIAMG was world renowned for it’s collection of artwork, both classical and modern. But even more impressive was it’s collection of international music. The collection spanned generations, centuries even, and was one of the most complete collections of music in the world. A visitor could easily walk in to the gallery, check out a head set, and be immersed in musical samples from the bronze age all the way through contemporary top hits. The visitor could then stroll through the collection of artwork, relax in the on-site botanical gardens, or gain a wealth of musical knowledge by visiting the Sound Lab. “The hope is to bring all of that back to Jarridia,” said Glenn Perry, JIAMG Curator. “Our goal is to bring this collection back to the world and to once again provide an inspirational place for artists to continue their work.”

Current plans seek to increase the gallery size for both music and art, update the systems that were in place for faster download and a better interface for music selection. The botanical gardens are also part of the new plan and will be expanded upon as the new Gallery will take up more vertical space than the old. At the heart of the garden will be a monument to recognize the fallen and provide a somber point of reflection for the entire world. There is no mention yet of a reimagination of the Jarridian International Music Festival that experiences it’s 4th iteration before the attacks, and had planned the 5th to take place. Many hope that this new gallery will act as a catalyst to bring the Festival back. Additionally, the City of Shelbin hopes to redesign this entire neighborhood by seeking developers for multiple new mixed use developments.

A New Year

As the new year passes by, change is in the air for the nation. Following results from the committee and approved by the Kaiser, it has been announced that the military of Romberg shall hence be cut by more than 50% to only 400 000. This puts them in line with many smaller powers of Astyria. It is said that various reasons have contributed to this drastic set of measures, including a further professionalisation of the armed forces - focusing on quality of each soldier as opposed to numbers, as well as the lack of major national threats to security thus not requiring the need to still maintain a large military. These funds will be diverted to support further social programmes as fossil fuel exports and extraction, apart from natural gas, are due to end by march of this year. However, and in commitment to the defense of the nation and recognizing its role in solidifying national identity, it is expected that conscription would still continue, and most if not all cut soldiers will be discharged into the reserve, such that the total number of reservists remain unchanged - in fact, it is expected that this number may well rise in the future. Several military units have been renamed as well, to reflect continuity with history - as previously hinted. However, some units such as military police units have been taken out of the military hierarchy. It is expected that a further compromise with the policing system would be reached some time in the future so that the federal police and paramilitary roles would be expanded and further defined, while support for state and local police would continue.

On the other hand, with economic growth slowing down in recent months, the Kaiser has decided to return to the liberal side of economics, believing that a further freeing of the market would help recreate growth. Following advice from economists, it is decreed that from National Day onwards, the national minimum wage shall be repealed. However, so as to ensure that workers' rights are still maintained, the national median wage shall be published every quarter for each of the occupations previously governed by the minimum wage system - the data of which shall be obtained from a mixture of a function of the consumer price index and figures provided by firms and workers on a legally mandated basis as part of calculating income tax. Misreports can be considered corruption, and a draft bill is in the works to be ratified by the Grand Council to punish firms who hire workers at a wage significantly below median wage. Firms have welcomed this move, noting the fact that this would help free up the market and ensure the forces of supply and demand are used to reach a higher rate of efficiency compared to before, while the presence of a median wage that workers can use to gauge their own pay on have alleviated some of the worst fears of worker exploitation. It is hence hoped that this measure can help restore Rombergian economic growth within the next year.

Boozed Up

Following a spectacular haul of medals in the Alpen View Beer Festival in Neu Engollon, individual brewers supported by the Rombergian Union of Breweries and the government of the nation have reported an increase in revenue by 5-20% in the wake of the win, showing the value of the Beerfest to breweries. "We're delighted to see that business is flourishing and that more and more people are interested in trying out Rombergian brews. We believe in putting our heart in everything we do, and with a centuries-old recipe passed down the generations, we are happy to see that our efforts have been duly rewarded and come to fruition in the form of additional business. We hope that this trend would continue, and we will hope to continue participating in future beerfest events." said one of the individual brewers who did not wish to be named. Alcohol brewing is the largest agricultural industry present in the nation, whose geography is mainly covered with forests, mountains and tundra, making most of the land rather unsuited for farming except in the far Southeast where steppe allows for some to occur. According to statistics gathered previously in 2013, the alcohol industry is responsible for 80% of the agricultural production of the nation, and up to 5% of its exports.

PEACE VALLEY CHRONICLE

02-26-2016 - CITY FINAL EDITION - 20c

ILLEGAL TRAPPERS JAILED
Just before Christmas 2015 two trappers carrying out illegal bear hunting in Northern Aurora set a trap that resulted in the loss of a woman's lower leg, arrested on christmas day, Rafiel Solsjen (22) and Daryl Hannis (24) began to face trial on January 25th at Peace Vally District court in what became a charged trial with accusations of mal practice on behalf of the arresting officers. Hannis and Solsjsen had placed in total 12 traps across national parks in 2016, 4 of which has resulted in bears becoming trapped in leg-hold devices where the accused subsequently shot the bears and traded their pelts and meats on the black market for several hundred Dinars for each bear sold.

The victim of the trap, named as Isis Anuket Mc.Callum was out walking with friends when she unwittingly trod on one of the traps that had been laid by Hannis and Solsjen, throughout the trial she has been in court to give evidence and listen to the evidence of the defence along with her two friends who she was walking with that day. The injuries sustained by Miss Mc.Callum were described as life changing as she surgeons at Peace Valley Trauma Centre amputated her leg at a point above her knee, resulting in an extensive rehabilitation process. Procecutors described the attitude of Hannis and Solsjen as "completely without remorse or care".

Judge Kelvin Sanders sentenced Hannis to 45 years in prison without parole and Solsjen to 42 years with parole in 38 years for their crimes stating that their actions broke every code of morality and put innocent lives at risk for nothing more than financial gain, therefore the harshest of messages must be sent in order to deter any future repeat of this terrible crime.

After the trial, Miss Mc.Callum read a short statement,
"I am pleased at the sentence handed down to these individuals and Justice has indeed been handed to these to youths, I will now continue to go through my recovery and physiotherapy as needed but they have not kept me from enjoying the scenery and natural beauty that is our fantastic national parks, for me life goes on and I have been blessed with care of the best surgeons and I give thanks to them for their care and for the jury at reaching their verdict today, I also give thanks to Judge Sanders for delivering the right sentence. Thank you."

SCYLLA: WAR IN PRUDENSIA ON THE TABLE

Image
Shadow Foreign Secretary Sansa Hume on way to Avantmare.
NEW LONDON, DUNGEYLAND - As key members of the shadow front-bench were called to the First Lord's official residence last night, 6 Avantmare finally admitted the consideration of plans to deploy Imperial troops and arms in the terrorist hotbed of Prudensia. Spurred on by vicious terrorist attacks last week in Symphony, the First Lord is keen to work with the Empire's international partners to secure peace and freedom from terrorism across Astyria.

Her Majesty's Government gathered both domestic and international journalists for a briefing to confirm days' worth of rumours about Dangish intentions in the region. A statement issued by 6 Avantmare did not explicitly confirm the intentions of Her Majesty's Government, but declared the idea of war in Prudensia as 'on the table' and under active consideration by the Privy Council. The intent was all but confirmed only moments later by a tweet from Gerard Kransopski, a junior minister in the Foreign & Colonial Office, in which the minister declared the current Liberal Government as 'decisive and bold in foreign affairs' and as the 'vanguard of Astyrian democracy.'

The news of Her Majesty's Government renewed zeal for liberal interventionism comes in the face of two simultaneous terrorist incidents in the Symphonian Empire's capital, Symphony. The attacks, one of which resulted in the death of the Majority Leader of the Imperial Senate, were unequivocally condemned by Her Majesty's Government. Sources within Avantmare described the attacks as provoking a major rethink of Scylla's ambitions for an Imperial withdrawal from Insula Fera, including of course the provisional administrative responsibilities currently held by the Empire in Pangus. Following the attacks, copycats to which Imperial territories may be vulnerable, the Privy Council has been reinvigorated in its support for a military role in quelling terrorism.

Meanwhile, the Imperial military command in Pangus continued to move from its combat-first role into a counter-terrorism role with the announcement of £2 billion of extra funding for specialist bomb-disposal training. The insurgency in Pangus has accelerated in recent months, with an attempt to carry arms into the Dangish zone from the Aquitaynian zone recently thwarted by an Aquitaynian soldier. Discord amongst top military brass in Pangus was reported last week by the Watchman, though briefings from Avantmare have downplayed the concerns of the armed forces.

The change in government policy is likely to spook the opposition Conservatives, who in recent weeks have been stressing their continued support for the Foreign Secretary's now discarded Osbourne Doctrine. The party has struggled to differentiate itself under its new leader Danielle McVey, in the face of a rightward shift by the Liberals. The Socialsts, meanwhile, have continued to stress their opposition to Dangish intervention abroad, whilst the Dangish Unionists have responded to the government's new position by suggesting governmental inaction in Prudensia led to the crisis in the first place.

The Provisional Governor of Pangus, Julius Vermee, did not respond to our request for comment.
Classical liberal.
  • My nation is called the Dangish Empire, officially
  • The population is circa 500 million
  • It is an imperial federation
  • The term Dungeyland while only technically referring to one colony can be used for the entire Empire (think Holland)
  • The Dangish Empire is a constitutional monarchy, our monarch is Queen Ellen I

VIOLENCE ERUPTS ALONG VIZO-BHORO BORDER

Image

Violence has erupted along the central ViZo-Bhoro border today, sparking militia and border patrol from both nations to engage one another. Tensions between these two neighboring enemies have
Image
Location of Incident
recently been at their highest levels in decades, and trade between the two nations ceased months ago after a group of Bhormakarian militia - unaffiliated with the Armed Forces of Bhormakaro - managed to sneak over the border at night, and attacked a crowded mall the following day, killing seventy five before they, themselves, were taken down by armed ViZionarians, local police, and border patrol.

Today's violence, a battle lasting for several hours that took the life of six of our own in uniform, has caused President Martello to declare war - however no actual military response has been taken. The President also did not allude to any military action being taken, instead stating that he and the President of Bhormakaro are working with each other on a peaceful resolution. With that said, the military is being mobilized for any necessary action, and the border has been locked down, secured by thousands of militia, border patrol, and the Army.

What caused the battle is not immediately known to us, however sources believe Bhormakarian militia fired upon ViZionarian border patrol when several vehicles were turned back at the border. When more details are available, we will update you.

VIZION SAVAGELY ATTACKS BHORMAKARIAN CIVILIANS

Today, the hostile ViZionarian troops along our border have taken another step again our fair people and land, attacking without warrant our citizens in the border city of Vala-Plau. Twenty seven civilians and another seven troops, along with two policemen, were murdered in cold blood at the attack lasted hours before we were able to push them back, and out of our sovereign land.

"ViZion has once again shown their hatred for our people, their ill-will towards us, and their arrogance as a nation. They hit us hard, and we pushed back. This will not be tolerated, and the blood they spilled of our people will not be forgotten. Our innocent civilians will not die in vein. There will be retribution." stated President Harvleign.

Troops have been called up, and the nations DEFCON level has been raised to THREE, and readiness to be raised higher. The Leadership Council has issued a Declaration of War against ViZion, and threats have been intercepted by our communications team - plans of attack by ViZion to seize our land and kill our people have been confirmed. Citizens are urged to prepare to defend our land in way means possible against the imperialist pigs to our south. We will not be defeated.

President Fufemwe condemns ViZo-Bhoro conflict

Image
Security checks at Port Emerson International Airport have been tightened
amid heightened security fears.
SJIRK VAN LEEUWEN, TABARAK

President Richard Fufemwe has this morning announced his "comprehensive" condemnation of last night's deadly battle on the ViZo-Bhoro border. A number of casualties have been reported on either side of the conflict, with Bhormakaro reporting almost thirty civilian deaths in an exchange lasting several hours on the countries' heavily militarised border. President Fufemwe has called the declarations of war from ViZion and Bhormakaro "abhorrent" and said they "threatened to destabilise the security of the entirety of Astyria".

It is unclear how the skirmish began, with ViZion claiming that a Bhormakarian militia group fired upon a border patrol and Bhormakaro claiming an unprovoked attack by the ViZo military on a Bhormakarian border town. President Fufemwe called for an "immediate cessation of hostilities" and pledged his intention to work with other Astyrian leaders on resolving the conflict, also vowing to have the perpetrators of the attack "brought to justice for the disruption of the peace in our great region". A spokesman for Tyrus R. Green, Meso Chief Justice, suggested that if it were proven that a random attack on civilians by ViZion had occurred, it could indeed amount to a crime against humanity as outlined in General Assembly Resolution #35, Article 2, Subsection B.

Following the incidents of the last 24 hours, the Mesoland Border Agency (MBA) has tightened security at ports and airports, as well as road crossings on the border with Jenrak, with the Interior Ministry citing fears of the spread of violence further afield. An MBA official commented, "In order to help retain security and prevent violence within Mesoland, those coming into Mesoland, especially citizens of ViZion and Bhormakaro, will be subject to extra security checks and are advised to make extra time for their journeys in order to allow for these checks to be carried out".

When contacted, the President's office released this statement: "The cabinet are unable to comment further on the matter until more substantial information comes to light. The President awaits a response from his counterparts across the region in regards to the issue".

BREAKING: Bhomakarian-Aquitaynian Border Closed, Military on High Alert

Image

Aquitaynian Metropolitan Command has been placed on high alert status for the first time since the Second Great Astyrian War.

Escova, Antea - The Aquitaynian Army has been placed on High Alert status following the recent outbreak of tensions between ViZion and Bhormakaro.

Today, violent clashes between ViZion and Bhormakaro have reignited tensions on Lorecia, with neither side admitting any wrongdoing. The ViZionarian Ministry of Defense stated that Bhormakaran militia forces fired on a ViZion patrol that was on the proper side of the border, which in turn retaliated against the militants. Conversely, the Bhormakarian state news agency, Bhormakaro Global Paper, stated that the nations military has been called into service, with the Bhormakarian president stating that, "There will be retribution" for the brief skirmish. Bhormakaran officials also claim that over 25 civilians were killed during the clash, a claim that has yet to be substantiated by any third party.

The Ministry of Defense has placed all military bases in the western areas of the country on high alert, and has deployed military troops to border crossings to enforce the Ministry of the State's recent announcement of the closure of the borders indefinitely. This marks the first time in over 70 years that the Aquitaynian military has been deployed on domestic soil, an action that is not explicitly denied in the constitution, however has usually been reserved for dire circumstances. The Ministry of Defense has stressed that this is not an indication of any type of military action against Bhormokaro, and is rather a preventative measure to ensure the safety of the Aquitaynian people and its sovereignty.

When questioned, the Ministry of Defense did confirm that certain units stationed at Fort Vogt, Fort Kangis, Fort Cottee and Air Station Metting had been activated and are currently working to ensure that the conflict does not spread over the Bhormakarian-Aquitaynian border. The Ministry declined to comment on whether or not there were any plans for Aquitaynian intervention in the conflict militarily, and to what end Aquitayne would be handling the growing crisis across the Aesirs.

A travel advisory has also been enacted by the Ministry of the State and any Aquitaynian residents currently working or travelling in Bhormakaro are advised to immediately contact the Aquitaynian embassy. There is currently no discussion of a closure of the Aquitaynian embassy in Bhormakaro.

His Majesty the King has stressed that "this situation is still developing and at the moment there is no need to be alarmed. Our diplomatic mission in ViZion is working diligently to ensure Aquitaynian interests are met and a cessation of hostilities is observed by both parties".

Such a cessation seems unlikely, given that Bhormakaro's Leadership Council has reportedly issued a declaration of war against ViZion, one of Aquitayne's largest trading partners in the region. ANN will be bringing you live news updates as the situation continues to unfold.

Tennis player arrested while trying to activate a bomb in Nikolia

Unfortunately the Astyrian Slam held this year in Carigrad's Katarina III Stadium didn't pass without an incident. After finding an explosive device in one of the player's boxes at the stadium, the Nikolian Police Forensics Lab worked hard to discover any possible clues that will lead to a person who placed the bomb. Within hours, the results showed a tennis player Gary Forcen from Ethane who arrived in Carigrad for the tournament. Earlier today, Forcen was seen at the Tsar Konstantin International Airport trying to flee the country and was quickly arrested by a team of Nikolian Gendarmerie while approaching a gate to board the plane.
Tennis player was then brought to interrogation but remained uncooperative to the officials and refused to state his motivations. The Nikolian officials said that they have contacted Ethanian officials and that they are tightly cooperating to resolve this situation. The Ethanian tennis player is facing life sentence after being charged for terrorism, illegal possession of an explosive device, illegal manufacturing of an explosive device, attempted mass murder and attempted mass destruction. By the laws of Nikolia, extradition is only available to the nations that have bilateral agreement with Nikolia or members of Eternal Accords of the Three Crowns.
Stay tuned for more news.

Nochtli pledges support for ViZion, setting stage for active foreign policy

Speaking to a cadet unit of the Jaguar Warrior Infantry, Quezalcoatl Nochtli, the Huey Tlatoani of the Aztec National League, pledged to provide ViZion with “any assistance necessary” in it’s ongoing border conflict with the nation of Bhormakaro. “ViZion has long been an ally of the Aztec National League. While ViZion is more than capable of defending itself against any threat, preserving the peace of ViZion and all of Astyria is of prime importance to the Nahua people.”

Though few observers expressed surprise about the Aztec National League supporting ViZion, it was the fact that the Nahua Altepetl expressed any position in an international dispute. As a result of an economic depression starting in 2008, the Aztec National League has taken an insular, almost isolationist foreign policy as it attempted to rebuild. However, as the Aztec National League’s economy has steadily rebounded, Nochtli has cited a need for the nation to “reassume its traditional role in international affairs.”

In declaring the Nahua Altepetl’s support for ViZion, Nochtli has ordered the military to be at “full readiness”. However, the administration was quick to clarify that, while ready to support ViZion, the Aztec military would not make any movements or deployments without authorization from ViZion. “Clearly, we will respect ViZion’s attempts to settle this issue peacefully.”

Gearing up the Aztec military to reassert itself in international politics poses several logistical challenges. Sources within the the Ministry of Defense have stated that while the military forces are able to meet that challenge, such actions will take careful planning and strategy. Also complicating matters is how the Aztec people will respond to this revived internationalism. Though there does not appear to be any organized opposition to increasing involvement with international politics at the moment, time will tell how a prolonged international action will be perceived by the public.

Conflict erupts in southern Lorecia
» ViZion and Bhormakoro at war after 'massacre' of civilians
By Liyhima Khezri, 29/03/'16

Southern Lorecia, long regarded as one of Astyria's most stable geopolitical regions, has seen war break out between one of the world's largest economic centres and its northern neighbour, defying all expectation. After some months of a deteriorating relationship between the nations of ViZion and Bhormakoro, including a massacre in a ViZionarian shopping centre perpetrated by non-governmental Bhormakarian troops, the diplomatic crisis in south Lorecia escalated into war, declared by ViZion's President Martello after further border conflicts.

Bhormakarian papers allege the most recent bout of violence began after an unprovoked attack in one of their border towns. Conversely, sources such as ViZion's Mingle News Network claim that a militia attempting to cross from Bhormakoro into ViZion was turned back at the border and then opened fire. Although both sides deny responsibility, it is clear that they anticipated such an eventuality as neither has made an attempt at peace, instead insisting the other is in the wrong. Though so far open war seems unlikely, if the two sides prove unwilling to compromise then their differences will have to be resolved somehow.

Though it seems surprising that neither government has called for a deescalation, and indeed that each has instead seen fit to declare war on the other, the relationship between the two nations goes a long way towards explaining this situation. ViZion has long held a preeminent position in Astyrian trade, enjoying the benefits of its size and quite central geographic location. Add to this its natural control over Astyria's most important shipping corridor and it is no wonder the ViZionarian government is confident of receiving the greatest part of foreign governmental support. Indeed, already the Aquitaynian and Nahua governments have come out in support of ViZion, the latter openly pledging assistance. These two are indicative of the strong position ViZion enjoys in Astyrian politics: it is able to count on its overseas allies to promise aid early and set the precedent for responses, and it is secure in the knowledge that its immediate neighbours will always side with their larger trade partner. Neutrality is the furthest another government is willing to go - as Meso President Fufemwe was prompt to declare. No governments seeking to maintain a semblance of credibility in front of one of Astyria's most powerful economies are going to side with the underdog, Bhormakoro.

Faced with this unpopularity and a long history of living in its southern neighbour's shadow, Bhormakoro has had plenty of time to fester. Parallels have already been drawn with Andamonia's relationship with Trellin, though there are differences: historically there was animosity between the two Lorecian nations than the Velaran empires, and the size disparity is greater between ViZion and Bhormakoro. Any military analyst would agree that Bhormakoro is simply incapable of winning a war against ViZion, and economically Bhormakoro is similarly outclassed by its southern neighbour. Without any sort of diplomatic clout behind it, the landlocked Lorecian state will inevitably find itself forced to back down, tail between its legs, and concede defeat. Unlike other recent conflicts throughout the region, where the underdogs had nothing to lose, Bhormakoro has nothing to gain through its belligerence. If their is a genuine grievance against legitimate ViZionarian transgressions, there are diplomatic channels that would allow redress to be sought. A war cannot end favourably for Bhormakoro. It is in their interests, and the interests of their people and the people of Lorecia as a whole, that the Bhormakarian government admit it has bitten off more than it can chew. For the sake of southern Lorecia's stability, they must back down.

Government increases enforcement against illicit drugs

Postby Aztec National League » Thu Mar 31, 2016 12:02 am

Government increases enforcement against illicit drugs

In response to last year’s authorizing legislation prompted by increases in drug-related crimes and addiction cases, the State Ministries Council announced several new policies to curtail the production and distribution of illicit drugs. In announcing these new policies, Itzeli Santellan, the Minister for Public Health said “Today, we set a new path in combating the scourge of drugs and addiction. The Aztec government will not tolerate criminals preying on the vulnerable.”

Under these new policies, the manufacturing, distribution and selling of opiates, methamphetamine, and other illicit substances for non-medical usage will be reclassified as being amongst the most serious crimes under Aztec Law. The punishments for these crimes often include prison sentences of a minimum of 5 to 10 years, hard labor, and other punitive measures. In addition to more strict sentencing requirements, the military and law enforcement will be given more authority to use force against drug supply networks. Remaining unchanged are the punishments for personal possession and use, which are considered a low level offense and often result in mandatory attendance in treatment programs rather than incarceration.

Ever since the revolutions of the 1980s and 1990s, drug policy has been a complicated subject in the Aztec National League. Under the junta that held power prior to 1996, the nation had some of the most strict drug policies on Earth. However, these laws were selectively enforced: cartels associated with the junta were given a carte blanche while cartels associated with the various revolutionary groups often faced execution, torture and other severe punishments. After the junta’s fall in 1996, a sort of uneasy peace was reached between the transitional government and the surviving cartels. However, tensions between the government and the cartels has been steadily increasing since 2003, as many in the ruling Socialist Party often clashed with various government-affiliated cartels during the revolutions.

Another complicating factor is the economics of the drug trade. Historically, cartels within the Nahua Altepetl have well-developed abilities to manufacture and distribute cocaine and psychoactive drugs. However, domestic cartels have lagged in their ability to produce and market opiates, meth and other more exotic substances. As such, some drug policy experts have stated concern that restricting the supply of drugs that have traditionally dominated the black market may create a vacuum - and an opportunity - other drugs.

When asked about this possible displacement, Santellan responded, “There is no silver bullet, and there is no one single approach or tactic that will solve everything. However, a failure to act is a failure to protect. And a failure to protect is an unacceptable failure of the Nahua people.”

Prime Minister Announces Military Expansion

Image

Prime Minister James Zaeir makes an announcement at the 3rd Armored Division discussing military expansion.

Fort Russel, Asuar - Prime Minister James Zaeir, with Ministry of Defense officials present, announces plans to expand military funding over the next ten years and increase the size of the military by 100,000 personnel.

The Prime Minister has announced today that the Ministry of Defense will be receiving additional funding over the next ten years to supplement a troop growth of 100,000 personnel. The announcement comes in the wake of a drawn-out occupation in Pangus and Prudensia, as well as a brewing civil war in Aswick that demands the attention of the Aquitaynian military as well, and likewise a growing crisis on the nation's western border. A Ministry of Defense official spoke on the condition of anonymity, stating that, "the region is in flux and currently the Aquitaynian military is not equipped or staffed properly to handle the level of attention needed."

Indeed, a Wright & Apollo analysis that was published yesterday stated that the Aquitaynian military "is being stretched to its limit: three conflicts on three continents is pushing the logistical capabilities of the military, not to mention the personnel requirements each one demands." While the conflict on Insula Fera is ongoing, international affairs correspondents worry about the capabilities of the Aquitaynian military to respond to developing threats as they arise. The problem, they say, is that with over 100,000 Aquitaynian troops dedicated to Insula Fera, it leaves other areas of the national defense lacking in resources. A Ministry of Defense official disclosed to ANN that the Ministry of Defense's current plan for assisting Aswick in their civil war is "almost entirely based off of the Amphibious Assault Group's capabilities, meaning that there will be no large-scale intervention on Aquitayne's part, other than that of the First Marine Expeditionary Unit."

The Prime Minister stated in his announcement that "the people of Aquitayne deserve a stronger national defense; one that is capable, flexible, and ready to react at a moments notice without hesitation." Currently, there are over 120,000 Aquitaynian troops stationed abroad, the most in over 60 years. With the Aswickan civil war brewing closer to open combat, that number is expected to rise drastically. The Prime Minister was also quick to note, however, that the announcement is not a direct response to the ViZio-Bhormakaro crisis, and is not intended to be interpreted as a threat to any nation, especially Lorecian ones.

The Ministry of Defense spokesman, Colonel Yuri Bortas, noted that the expansion will be conducted through a reorganization of the nations main structure as well as "the addition of at least an army division and an additional Marine Expeditionary Force." Currently, the size of an Aquitaynian Army division stands at roughly 20,000 troops, while the Marine Expeditionary Force stands at anywhere between 50,000-60,000. While calls within the Mariners for separation from the Navy, those calls were not discussed in the briefing. Currently, the Aquitaynian Mariners consist of roughly 70,000 Mariners, making it the smallest of the Aquitaynian military services, although it technically does not exist as its own branch of the military.

This type of massive troop surge implies that the Ministry of Defense sees Aquitayne's need for rapid power projection to be growing. The current size of the Aquitaynian military stands at just under 600,000 personnel, which means that by the end of the expansion, Aquitayne will have one of the larger militaries in Astyria, standing behind the superpowers like Kobolis, the Blackhelm Confederacy, and larger nations like Nikolia and the Dangish Empire. When asked about why the military was conducting such a large expansion, the Ministry of Defense spokesman stated that "we feel that the current size of the military is incapable of handling the threats that we see arising throughout the region."

The spokesman also discussed the expansion of health care benefits, spousal benefits and pay as part of the expansions incentives to get young Aquitaynians more interested in joining the military. The expansions will include bumps to pay and combat pay, increased funding to living quarters and the expansion of old barracks, as well as the expansion of recovery systems for injured soldiers. The PR campaign is expected to roll out in late 2016.

With the recent terrorist attacks on Kobolis and the crippling of the largest oil refinery in Aquitayne a few months ago, there is no doubt that the stability of the region is in flux. The Ministry of Defense estimated that the expansions will total upwards of 50 billion Aeros. How the Ministry of Defense plans to appropriate the funds was not disclosed.

LEAKED: "VARROCKIANS AT RISK FROM BHORMAKARO CONFLICT"

Image
A young pupil in Cape Feldman affected by dominion
government plans to restrict free education from Cezarians.
MERTYN, VARROCKIA - A report leaked from within the Dominion Government of Varrockia has declared ordinary Varrockians as 'at risk' from the burgeoning conflict between ViZion and Bhormakaro. Though the Imperial Government has responded by urging caution, voices within the Varrockian Government's War Directorate have reportedly urged Avantmare to increase Imperial Navy patrols in the region.

War broke out last week between the ViZion, which borders Dungeyland, and Bhormakaro. Varrockia itself does not as an island border either state, but is situated in the Strait of ViZion, which military staff assigned to the Varrockian Government suspect to be a major naval flashpoint in the coming conflict. Currently, there are only two ships assigned to the dominion, a reflection of the Empire's genial relations with the ViZion and the ordinarily peaceful state of affairs in the strait. The rapidly escalating situation has led at least one War Department official seconded to the Varrockian Government's War Directorate to comment publicly.

'Though the Bhoro government lacks the capability to wage a full naval campaign against the ViZion, without the deployment of sufficient Imperial naval assets in an otherwise peaceful region, there is a significant risk that the island of Varrockia could be subject to accidental or provocative fire from the Bhoro government."

Meanwhile, Her Majesty's Government has downplayed the criticism from the War Directorate official. A senior source in the War Department told the Intelitza Times that 'Imperial defence of Varrockia is a top priority and that adequate resources have already been allocated,' whilst the First Lord's office issued a statement declaring the leak a deliberate attempt to weaken the reputation of the Liberal Government for defending the Empire. It is widely believed within Avantmare and New London that the Varrockian Government privately seeks the deployment of new vessels both to defend the dominion and to artificially produce jobs to combat the dominion's economic downturn.

The Prime Minister of Varrockia, Lael Breslin, refused to further clarify the Varrockian Government's position beyond its claim that 'Her Majesty's Armed Forces are always welcome in this dominion, and this Government trusts the Imperial administration to adequately guarantee our security.' Elected in 2011 as the dominion's first Conservative majority Prime Minister in twenty years, and first female Prime Minister ever, the Varrockian Conservative and Monarchist Party is facing an uphill battle in dominion elections this May. Polling currently indicates the Conservatives will emerge the largest party by a sliver, but will be unable to govern even with the support of traditional allies in the Varrockia Imperial Party. An alternative that has become progressively more likely in recent months is that of a Liberal-Socialist coalition government, though both dominion parties deny such a deal is on the cards.

Breslin's Conservative administration has come under pressure in recent months following the publication by the Imperial Institute for Economic Affairs, a Mertyn-based think-tank, of a report assigning blame to the Conservative government's flagship 'living wage' policy for the recent rise in unemployment and inflation that has taken place in the dominion. The IIEA, whose influence stretches deep into Avantmare, have also criticised the Varrockian Government over its plans for a punitive tax on sugar in food and drink. Further pressure on the Varrockian Government is seen as forthcoming when the quarter's local economic indicators are released later this month.

The local Liberal group has criticised the government on its economic policy, using the Liberal administration in Dungeyland as evidence for Tory mismanagement. Cont. pg4

LAW LORDS FOR FELDMAN GOV

The Cape Feldman administration's intention to deny access to education to residents of Cezary has attracted a legal bid from Children of Cezary that has been granted a hearing at the Supreme Appelate Court of the House of Lords in New London. The plans, announced last year by the Unionist Governor of Feldman, Sir Huey Powell, have been heavily criticised across the entire Empire, with the First Lord describing them as an 'affront to human decency.' The rules, due to come into force this September, would deny up to 300,000 children who are legally registered as residents of neighbouring Cezary the right to free government-provided primary and secondary education. The legal bid has been based on the Imperial Government's Education Act, which guarantees publicly funded education to all Imperial citizens, and form part of wider pro-democracy protests taking place in the cape.

EPSOM SOCIALISTS SPLIT

The Government of Epsom, led by the Socialist Party and Prime Minister Alex Hill, has been riveted by the resignation of five cabinet members and over a third of the Socialist Parliamentary Party, who resigned their Socialist membership in order to found a new regional party. The new party, called the Epsom Democratic Socialist Association, or EDSA, has now deprived the Socialist government of a majority of seats in the Epsom Parliament. With 47 seats in the 229-strong lower house, EDSA has reduced the Socialists to a rump of 92 seats; the Government majority of 25 has now been reduced to a minority lacking 23 members. The opposition Liberals, who lost over 50 seats in dominion elections in 2014, remain the second largest party in the legislature with 63 seats, whilst the Conservatives become the fourth largest party at just 15 seats. EDSA has declared its intention not to enter government with the Socialists, whom they describe as insufficiently radical following two years in charge of the dominion. It is unclear which parties will form the Epsom Government, given that even the unlikely coalition of the Socialists, Conservatives and Unionists could not deliver a majority government; the Liberals, who stand to gain if elections are held, do not wish to form a 'grand coalition' whilst all parties have agreed not to work with the Nationalist Party.

BHORMAKARO GLOBAL PAPER
The True Bhormakaro Accredited News Networok

PRESIDENT HARVLEIGN STATES DEMANDS OF VIZION

The President spoke today, the day after the terrorist attack in Vala-Plau took place. The death count has reached thirty one civilians killed in cold blood by ViZionarian troops, and our brave men and woman that took arms against the imperialist ViZionarian military saved countless others from certain death. The President asked the international community to "stand with us, comrads. Stand against imperialism, against hatred, again terrorism. No more unnecessary civilian deaths! We demand the immediate disarmament of the ViZionarian military, and the total removal of the entire ViZionarian nuclear program."

We, for one, agree. With the military they have, they pose an incredible threat to the global community, to civilians across the world who, yesterday, witnessed the true colors of ViZion. It is time to end the ViZionarian military as we know it, and limit their strength so they can never hurt another civilian again.

Ships Deployed to the ViZio Straight

Image

The HMS Hannover is depicted on training exercises four months ago.

Naval Base Braden, Tasmalian - The First Maritime Patrol Flotilla has been ordered to patrol the ViZio Straight in a clear message to Bhormakaro and the region by the Prime Minister.

Earlier this morning, the First Maritime Patrol Flotilla, comprising of three ships, departed Naval Station Braden on orders to deploy the the ViZio Straight. The Ministry of Defense claims that the deployment is routine, and ensures the continued freedom of navigation through the wide straight that divides Lorecia and Teudallum, but the timing of the deployment speaks volumes. The move is seen by analysts as a clear message to President Harvleign, stating that the Aquitaynian military will become involved in the conflict if it is necessary, without openly escalating the rising tensions further. Professor of International Relations at the University of Telora, James Hardin, states that, "this is like a mini-warning. Instead of deploying troops to the Aquitaynian-Bhormakaro border as a sign of imminent attack, the Ministry of Defense has gone for a softer, subtler, but just as poignant approach here."

The duration of the deployment remains unknown, but with the recent announcement that the Aquitaynian military will be expanding by 100,000 troops over the next decade is seen by some as non-coincidental. Some analysts argue that Aquitayne is trying to strut its power projection at a time where, after the EATA and Dangish interventions on Insula Fera, Aquitayne is seen as a lesser power in the region. Either way, the escalating conflict between ViZion and Bhormakaro continues to risk spilling over into Aquitayne and dragging it into the conflict. A Ministry of Defense spokesman who spoke to ANN on the condition of anonymity stated that, "while the official position of the MoD is that we are not getting involved in the conflict, there are invasion plans being drafted that detail an Aquitaynian assault into Bhormakaro."

The Ministry of Defense declined to comment when asked about the statement, but James Hardin believes "it is not unlikely for a nation with two neighbors at war to begin planning involvement. Although it is unlikely and probably unnecessary, its a calculated defense strategy." The Ministry of Defense has, up to this point, been wary of escalating the situation further. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how Bhormakaro handles the Aquitaynian action and it remains unclear how the conflict will move forward in the upcoming days.

"Build it higher," they scream!

Yellosian Refugees camp outside the Falkasian/YSR Border Wall.

"Build it higher," they scream. Soldiers tasked with manning the Falkasian/YSR Border Wall have found themselves under increasing pressure as of late, dealing with the sudden influx of refugees from the Yellow Star Republic.

With the recent collapse of its neighbor to the north, Falkasia has become the go-to place for a near endless stream of refugees trying to escape the totalitarian regime. It is unclear how long the chaos has been growing, but it is blatantly obvious that many who formerly called the country home have decided to get out while the opportunity is available.

"Its a tricky situation," Premier Kazyenko suggested in a brief interview with EKTV. "Given the long, and often violent histories between our two nations, I do not feel obligated in the slightest to welcome into our homes former enemies."

Aggression between the two states has always been a hallmark, as any cursory glance through a history textbook will reveal. As far back as the early Middle Ages, warlords from both states would regularly find themselves in conflict. More recently, the famous 1965 Border War resulted in the first real full-scale war, and directly contributed to the deaths of nearly a million soldiers and civilians during combat and the subsequent economic depression which ensued afterwards. In the late 1990's, following the adoption of home rule by the Falkasian state, a radical divergence in ideology occurred which further fueled the historic feud.

"We have enough problems dealing with the [expletive deleted] Grags to the south," stated Pyotr Grigorenko, Falkasian Army Colonel and Garrison Commander of the Ikovskaya Border Wall, "Last thing we need is more filthly, [expletive deleted] Yellows spoiling our land. My father was a Motor Rifleman back in '65... you think they gave a shit when both his legs were blown off by landmine? I don't care if they're coming here to escape destitution! Their parents and grandparents had the option to come to Falkasia, but no... now when the going gets tough, they want to give up and run away from it all and expect us to receive them with open arms!"

There's a great deal of fear, especially among the 200 or so soldiers tasked with patrolling the entirety of the border wall. While they are well-equipped and have access to a great deal of support and facilities, its a simple matter of numbers. While the wall itself, a hold-over fortification from the years following the 1965 war, is 12 feet high in most places, it has suffered from a general lack of repair on the YSR-side. In an area still plagued with antiquated landmines and other unexploded ordinance, most Falkasian engineers have had little interest in risking their lives to otherwise patch up an aging slab of concrete. However, the Falkasian Corps of Engineers has since come to regret this decision.

In many places, the wall has eroded so badly that it is quite literally held together with duct tape and barbed wire. In these places, which serve as natural checkpoints for allowing immigrants through, Falkasian Guardsmen have found themselves stretched beyond their limits. It is believed that as many as 10,000 refugees have flocked to Falkasia, prevented from entering solely on account of the wall. This equates to 1 soldier for every 50 refugees, a number which provides excellent justification for the fears expressed by Colonel Grigorenko.

"If they were to get organized, and we have reason to believe there may be former PRA or RLO Officers intermingled with them, it would be foolish not to say they could overrun our defenses in a heartbeat," Andrei Lebedev, FSIS Director-General announced in a press conference earlier in the week. "We're taking precautions to ensure current events come to pass, but it is still a very serious situation nonetheless."

By precautions, the FSIS has mobilized several teams to help reinforce the beleaguered Border Guard. The Falkasian Army has also called up the Ikovskaya Levy and placed them on high alert should an incident occur. Their proximity to the border would allow frontal aviation to be on-scene in half-an-hour, with regular mechanized and motorized units arriving within four.

Friedrich Schechtmann, King of Gragastavia currently living in exile, diverged from his contemporaries and expressed a dramatically different opinion on the matter. "Falkasia is a nation of friends. Despite a similar troubled past between my home and Falkasia, the Premier and his people have graciously allowed me to seek refuge while the situation in Al Duhaba stabilizes. If both my people and those of Falkasia could shelve our history in favor of cooperation towards the future, I don't see why a similar stance can't be taken with the Yellosians to the north."

Like the YSR, Falkasia and Gragastavia have had a tumultuous past characterized by war and economic competition. The Falko-Gragastavian War in the late 1980's cemented the predominately Arab nation as an integrated protectorate of Falkasia, but with it came the evolution of the Gragastavian Liberation Army and decades of subsequent terrorism across both nations. Recent political strife, coupled with a partially successful coup by GLO supporters, forced the King to flee to Falkasia.

Presently, seven refugees have been killed and several more injured in clashes along the Border Wall. Two Falkasian soldiers have also been severely injured, after being trampled by refugees while attempting to corral a riot near one of the checkpoints.

VoZ: Nochtli orders deployments amid worsening conflict

Nochtli orders deployments amid worsening ViZion-Bhormakaro conflict

Huey Tlatoani Quetzalcoatl Nochtli ordered the Aztec Navy to deploy two task forces of four ships each outside both ends of the ViZo Straight Tuesday morning in response to the ongoing crisis between the nations of ViZion and Bhormakaro. In a statement provided by the Aztec Central Command, Nochtli said “We again recommit our support to ViZion, and pledge to defend any Aztec or allied interest in the zone of conflict.”

The deployment of military forces in the region is the most recent development of the Aztec National League’s response to the skirmishes along the ViZion/Bhormakaro border. Yesterday, the Aztec government issued a travel advisory, discouraging its citizens from visiting the north western half of ViZion’s borders. Additionally, Aztec university students studying abroad have been advised of the armed conflict and the possibility of needing to return home. To the Aztec government’s knowledge, there are no citizens currently in Bhormakaro.

Though the deployment orders give the Aztec military assets in region the authority to assist ViZion’s forces upon request, the primary objective of the deployed task forces is to protect Aztec shipping routes in the region. The both the western and eastern task force consists of two Seawolf class submarines and two Arleigh Burke class destroyers.. Both task forces will be located within international waters on either end of the ViZo Straight.

Another potential facet to the mission includes monitoring for possible efforts to smuggle materials in and out of Bhormakaro. Like many other developing nations, Bhormakaro has a healthy black market - roughly 5% of the national economy. Everything from basic necessities, industrial supplies, drugs and even weaponry may be traded underground. When asked about the possibility of a connection between the Nahua Altepetl and the Bhormakaro black market, a representative of the Aztec military stated, “Though it is remote, it’s unacceptable possibility”.

"Your News. Your Nation."

Breaking News: Border Skirmish erupts in ViZion

Shelbin, Jarridia - Violence broke out yesterday along the ViZion - Bhormakaro border killing twenty seven Bhoro civilians in the aftermath. It is unclear as to what initiated the conflict as both sides are pointing to the other side. International affiliates, including JNN's own Mark Sunderberg, are reporting that Bhormakaro made the provocative move as they attacked a ViZionarian border partol group. "The reports coming out of the region are extremely mixed, as you can imagine. This region has been heavily contested through the years and hostilities are nothing new to the populace that resides along the border" says Sunderberg "We may never know what actually engaged the aggression, but local accounts do point to a Bhoro first strike."

This has been an ongoing conflict that has cooled in recent years; however, both sides do seem poised and primed for war. There has been internation outreach for both sides, including members of Astyria that hope to see a swift and peaceful end. At this time it is unclear what Jarridia's stance will be as there have been no press releases from the President. Jarridia and Vizion have a very long-standing alliance including a Mutual Defense Initiative (JVMDI). If Bhormakaro is found to be the initiating aggressor, it would no doubt cause Jarridia to become an active member in the conflict against them, despite modern Jarridia taking a more peaceful approach to all Astyrian relations. Other Jarridian allies, including the Aztec National League, have already spoken out in support of Vizion and are committing resources.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see the response from the Jarridian government and the expectations of the ViZIonarian pact.

Universal Defense Reports Record Sales

Image
Workers inspect missile components at Universal Defense's factory in Ekaterine.

Heightened tensions between ViZion and Bhormakaro, coupled with regional insecurity due to the GLO takeover in neighboring Gragastavia, has led to a massive increase in sales for Universal Defense. Company reports project the impending hire of over 1000 new employees to help maintain pace with growing order volume.

Universal Defense, one of the world's largest and most renowned defensive contractors, has served as the backbone of the Falkasian economy since its inception in 1999. Having faithfully provided quality military equipment to all branches of the Falkasian military, alongside outsourcing to many other armed forces around the world, it exists as the pre-eminent employer throughout the country. Matched by none in scope, the firm maintains a near monopoly in the regional market and is best noted for its wide range of firearms and land-based weapons systems.

As recently as 2012, following the death of the company's enigmatic CEO Pyry Junttila, the company fell from prominence and temporarily ceased operations. In-fighting among the firm's upper management, most notably on who should assume leadership of the company following the death of Junttila, led to a systematic collapse. Subsequent restructuring, necessitated by the minor depression forced upon the Falkasian economy following the company's closure, resulted in a reopening in 2014. Since, Universal Defense has struggled to regain its former market share lost to outside competitors.

In 2015, an internal server crash believed to have been caused by a GLO cyber-attack involving the TahiniXO virus, caused much of the intellectual property and company blueprints to be lost to cyberspace. An intensive forensic effort has been able to recover many of these plans, but it is widely believed that most will be lost forever.

While a challenge, Universal Defense has stepped up their game. Instead of focusing upon what was lost, they have instead repurposed their efforts to produce new and cutting-edge systems moving forward. Self-described as the "Defense Contractor for a Modern World," Universal Defense strives to maintain active role in the changing nature of warfare and conflict within the 21st Century. Many aged designs, most notably those from pre-2012 remain on offer, but are back-ordered to be filled by current available stocks.

"We rely heavily on modern Falkasian military doctrine," Mirjam Sundqvist, UD's new CEO, stated during a press conference, "we seek to produce highly mobile battle systems, designed to integrate with a tradition of rapid assaults coupled with heavy firepower. Survivability is of the utmost importance, so each of our vehicles are built from the foundation of preserving life."

New systems, with the modern generation of conflict in mind, are designed from the ground up to be highly modular and capable of mounting flexible mission load-outs to tackle any situation. Currently in the works are a line of unmanned land-based vehicles. Although information is scarce, it is believed that these autonomous or semi-autonomous drones will be capable of serving in a variety of roles as required by the battlefield situation.

When asked, Sundqvist declined to speak on the matter, claiming her interactions with the Falkasian Government and military were classified.

By and large, Universal Defense is best known recently for its involvement with the conflict in the Cardwithian Islands. Most notably, the outsourcing of both labor and manufacturing to a variety of facilities across the island chain. In support of the local regime, and backed in full faith by the Falkasian garrison there, Universal Defense has pumped billions of NSD into the local economy and revolutionized a backwater agrarian society into an industrial powerhouse. Despite the politics of the self-proclaimed "socialist" regime, living conditions and median income within Cardwithian territory have become far superior to that of the neighboring Republic of Hutanjia, resulting in a near endless stream of refugees seeking a better life.

Combined, Universal Defense earned over 3 trillion NationStates Standard Dollars this past fiscal year. Early financial projections suggest FY2016 could easily exceed 5 trillion, resulting in a net contribution of nearly 1 trillion to the presently booming Falkasian economy.

Everyday Hero: Meet The Man Who Shakes His Head And Sighs Whenever He Hears About Terrorist Attacks

Image

If you love stories about inspiring Astyrians, then wait till you hear about this guy.

His name is Lucius Brownstone, and he’s a 43-year-old executive consultant from Sacrament, BC. You wouldn’t know it from looking at him, but Lucius is a hero. And he’s doing his part to help the world in a really special way: Whenever Lucius hears about a terrorist attack happening somewhere, he shakes his head.

Inspiring!

Any time Lucius hears about a bombing in Paritte or a shooting in Kamalbia, he immediately stops whatever he’s doing and solemnly shakes his head from side to side while letting out a brief, mournful sigh. Depending on the severity of the attack, he sometimes even says “This is crazy” or “Not again.” A humble hero determined to make a difference in whatever way he can!

Lucius might not be the kind of hero we see in the nightly news, but his brave dedication to shaking his head sadly and looking somber for a few seconds whenever anyone talks about people dying in a terrorist attack is certainly something we can all respect. What an incredible man.

Thanks for doing your part, Lucius! You set a great example for all Astyrians.

Initial reports indicate the attack was carried out by Heraldan Rebels, marking the first attack in the 2016 fighting season.

East Corvus, Pangus - A car bomb has exploded at an Aquitaynian military checkpoint in Eastern Corvus.

About two hours ago, a car bomb exploded at the Eastern Corvus Aquitaynian checkpoint, which leads directly to the heart of the Pangeian government sector. The large blast destroyed one of the incoming lanes of the checkpoint area, and it is reported that three Aquitaynian service members were killed in the attack. According to reports, the vehicle was motioned to stop multiple times, and warning shots were fired before the vehicle came to a halt around twenty meters before the checkpoint. Witnesses claim the driver of the vehicle waited for Aquitaynian personnel to approach the car before detonating the explosive device.

The Heraldan Rebels, the terrorist organization that is largely believed to be at the forefront of the dissolution of the Imperial Spartanian Empire, claimed responsibility for the attack in a video featuring their leader, Neemar Loringian, who remains elusive to Aquitayne and the Dangish Empire after over 2 years on the island. Neemar promised renewed fighting against Aquitaynian, Dangish and Pangeian forces, claiming that "the unlawful occupation of this free land will not go unpunished." It is not the first time the leader of the Heraldan Rebels has publicly challenged international authority over the region.

The Ministry of Defense stated that this could be the opening salvo of a particularly bloody spring, with one official believing that "with the recent events in Symphonia, the propaganda and recruitment efforts of the Heraldans are going to bear much larger fruit this year." It remains unclear how the MoD plans to counteract the influx of international immigrants to Pangus to fight alongside the Heraldan Rebels, and with the erupting conflicts in Aswick and Bhormakaro, it remains uncertain if the Aquitaynian military as a whole has the capability of fighting on three fronts.

Current estimates place the number of injured persons from the car blast at around 60, and ANN will bring you news updates as we get them.

In Their Words
With Valeria Ravenclaw
Image

The first stop on our trans-regional tour brings us to the hallowed halls of the Palace at Vernoir, Aquitayne, to interview Samuel Reich, the current reigning monarch of the nation and a joint ruler of the United Kingdom. Aquitayne has been in the news a bit recently, with its deployments to the Insula Fera to create a safe haven and restore order after the recent government collapse there, as well as the decision to deploy vessels to the ViZionarian Strait, a controversial move which some consider to be a threat to international shipping moving through the busy waterway. Valeria Ravenclaw got down to the details with the king in tonight's exciting interview.

Valeria Ravenclaw: Good morning, your majesty, it is an honor to be able to meet you

HM Samuel Reich: It's a pleasure to be here with you, Valeria.

VR: These past couple of years have really seen Aquitayne take a leading role in the region, your highness. Aquitaynian troops have found themselves engaged in operations on the Insula Fera, and recently, you yourself have authorized the deployment of vessels to the Vizionarian Strait. What do you think it is that enable your kingdom to take such a dominate role?

HMSR: Well, I think the Aquitaynian people have put the needs of Astyria before their own. We saw that when the Magnus Magnatus decided to intervene on Insula Fera, for example, with the great work we're doing there to bring people back from oblivion. I think the people of Aquitayne fundamentally understand that we are a nation that has the capability of enacting lasting and positive change on the region, and believe that we have a moral obligation to help in those positive changes.

VR: On that matter, Aquitayne has been able to walk a fine line between both the ATO and the EATA, while still carrying out a number of operations and maintaining relations with both sides. Do you think this neutral position has been a help or a hindrance to the rise of Aquitayne in the Astyrian political arena?

HMSR: I think its definitely strained some of our relations throughout the region, that's for sure. The situation between Aquitayne and ATO and the EATA is complex and delicate at the best of times. We saw how this line can get muddied in 2013 [here he refers to the invasion of Pangus, and we've been working hard with other governments to make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen again, but it's just as important to understand that Aquitayne and our allies are not bound by the same rules as the majority of the region, and I think in that regard we hold a significant advantage in preserving the peace and brokering amicable solutions when relations sour.

VR: It would seem that the United Kingdom has had a much better relationship with the ATO than it has with EATA member states in recent years. Do you think this is a result of overly aggressive EATA politics, overly timid ATO politics, or soe other factor?

HMSR: Well, firstly, I don't think Aquitayne is more pro-ATO or specifically anti-EATA. I do believe that EATA policies have put the region at risk more times than I'm comfortable with, and we've seen that Aquitayne and other neutral parties have had to step in when necessary to ensure a peaceful resolution. ATO, historically, has not exhibited these same behaviors but, again, Aquitayne and I will continue to retain our neutrality, and an objective one at that, indefinitely.

VR: A very well said answer. We are getting towards the end, so I will start to ask some more personal questions if you dont mind. If you could, what is one thing that you would change in the region today?

HMSR: Of course. I think one of the most pressing things facing our region in the modern day is facing climate change head-on. If I could sit down the world leaders of Astyria and force them to commit to a sustainable energy plan, I'd do it in a heart beat.

VR: What steps has Aquitayne itself taken in the field of sustainable energy?

HMSR: Well, solar and wind energy production are up 5 percent in the last decade, and we're on track to meet 30% of our energy needs through sustainable resources by 2020, which is an excellent accomplishment. A resolution is currently going through the Magnus Magnatus to subsidize solar panels on homes and businesses, as well as subsidizing building new houses with sustainable materials and recycled plastics.

VR: Thats very interesting. Believe it or not, there is actually a very strong movement for sustainable energy in the Blackhelm Confederacy as well. But moving on to our next issue: terrorism and the recent attack on Kobolis. Aquitayne has remained relatively silent on the attack and on the terror group. Would you like to take this time to make a statement?

HMSR: Of course the hearts of Aquitayne go to our friends and family in Kobolis. I had the opportunity to speak with President Howard in the days after the attack and extended to him the full cooperation and assistance of the Aquitaynian intelligence services in dealing with this threat. We did not, however, feel it necessary to further the conflict in Kamalbia, but of course the attacks are devastating and horrendous, and I look forward to those who perpetrated the attacks being held accountable for their actions.

VR: On the subject of being held accountable for their actions, have Aquitaynian troops made any progress in apprehending the key members of the Herald terror group on the Insula Fera? And on that note, what are the goals of the United Kingdom in restoring order in that part of the region?

HMSR: Well, while I can't fully discuss ongoing military operations, I can say that we are actively searching for the Heraldan leadership and feel confident that they will be brought to justice soon. Ultimately, Aquitayne and our allies are on track to hold elections in August for the new government of Pangus. Afterward, all administrative duties and responsibilities will be handed over to the new government, with some advisers remaining to ensure a steady and smooth transition.

VR: There is a significant fear that this will turn Pangus into a kind of UK puppet state, giving you a significant new market and a foothold on the island. What do you have to say about these fears?

HMSR: Aquitayne has no intention of creating a puppet state in Pangus. The elections will be monitored by both Aquitaynian, Dangish, and Confederate officials, ensuring a fair, free, and open election. Hopefully the people of Pangus will have access to the free market and be provided the goods they need, but Aquitayne has no plans in place to have Aquitaynian trade be exclusive to Pangus nor do we have any intentions of interfering with Pangeian governance after the elections.

VR: And finally, I would like to ask you about the presence of your ships in the Vizion Strait. It is apparent that Bhormakaro has no navy and is actually on the far side of Vizion from the water. They pose virtually no threat to the shipping in the area. Why did your government feel it necessary to deploy those ships to the area?

HMSR: Aquitayne sits in a precarious strategic position in this developing conflict, and while Bhormakaro does indeed lack naval forces, that does not mean they are incapable of interrupting trade. The Admiralty and myself felt it necessary to deploy ships to the strait in order to protect shipping lanes and keep mariners, and shipping companies, at ease that the conflict would not interfere with their routes. If these companies don't feel confident that the conflict erupting rather closely to their routes isn't going to interfere with them, put their people at risk, then they're going to use other routes - longer routes. More expensive routes. We believe, strongly, that in this instance, neither ViZion nor Bhormakaro should be able to influence international trade through what is, arguably, the most important shipping lane in the region.

VR: How exactly do you think the Bhormakarian government can interrupt trade from their current position?

HMSR: That, Valeria, is classified.

VR: So are you saying you know of some kind of Bhomakarian weapon previously unknown to the Astyrian community?

HMSR: Am I saying Bhormakaro has access to weapons of mass destruction, or a superweapon? No. What I am saying, is that the Bhormakaran military has the operational capabilities and resources to put pressure on the ViZion Strait.

VR: That is a very interesting development indeed. Before we part ways, if there anything else that you would like to express concerning anything we have spoken about or you wish we had?

HMSR: While we're here, I'd like to wish the Jewish communities that will gather in their homes tomorrow night across the region a happy Passover. And thank you for having me, Valeria, it's always a pleasure.

VR: Like, your majesty, thank you for your time here today

HMSR: Any time.

In Their Words
With Valeria Ravenclaw
Image

The second stop on our tour finds us at the Hill House, in Olympaea, Kobolis, to interview Galen Howard, the President of the Federation and one of the most powerful men in Astyria. Kobolis has recently experienced a major terror attack, leveling the city of Spiritwood, and undergone some withering criticism over their involvement, or lack their of, concerning international affairs. Tonight, our own Valeria Ravenclaw will ask the tough questions, and allow President Howard to explain some of the decisions he has made for his nation, in his own words.

Valeria Ravenclaw: Good morning President Howard, thank you for meeting with me today.

Galen Howard: Good morning to you too miss Ravenclaw, the pleasure is mine.

VR: So, we will start off with an easy one, if you had to describe Kobolis in three words, which words would you choose?

GH: You said you’d start with an easy one… Uhm… Beautiful, kind and resilient. That’s what comes to mind.

VR: And the Blackhelm Confederacy? Three words for them?

GH: And when are we getting to the easy part?... Uhm… Expansive, modest and involved. Honestly, I’m just throwing out words here.

VR: Interesting choices Mr. President. Many people around the region have recently criticized the nation of Kobolis for its relative silence on a variety of issues, from the Lorecian War to the presence of military vessels in the Vizionarian Strait. What do you have to say to those critics, and is there any particular reason for the silence we have seen as of late?

GH: Well miss Ravenclaw, those critics have not been paying particular attention to the situation this Federation finds itself in at this moment. The Lorecian War had been addressed on its onset, when I personally condemned the invasion of Plätteissen Adler. It was the decision of our military leadership, after discussion with our allies, to not involve ourselves in that conflict beyond that. Since then, this Federation has been struck by a catastrophic terrorist attack, which has ensured that the focus of this government has been to safeguard this nation from such a thing ever happening again. Our silence regarding the presence of military vessels in the Vizionarian Strait, which are international waters unless I have been mis-informed, is a direct result of that.

VR: Regarding that decision to not get involved in Lorecia, there has been some talk throughout the region that Kobolis prefers to use the Gauls as something of a bulldog, unleashing them to deal with dangers while it keeps its own troops at home and out of harms way. We saw this happen against the YSR, as well as during the recent fighting in Southeastern Teudallum , where Kobolian troops only appeared on scene after the bulk of the fighting had already been dealt with. How would you respond to these allegations?

GH: The Republic of Gaul is a very valuable ally to the Federation. The notion that we use them as a “bulldog” is just… wrong. It was the decision of the Republic to intervene themselves in the conflict with the Yellow Star Republic, while the Federation would move an overwhelming force to the other theatre. Those decisions were made by military leaders and had been agreed upon by both sides. Had the Blackhelm Confederacy not assisted with enabling peace talks, the Kobolis military wouldn’t have been restricted in the way they had. (Go ahead, done)

VR: So would you say that the notion that Gaulic troops had done the bulk of the fighting in Southeastern Teudallum is a wrong one then?

GH: Absolutely not. It were the forces of Gaul that enabled the Federation to amass the forces it did and get them to the right location. The thought that Gaul’s military is a bulldog the Federation uses for its dirty work, is wrong, not the sacrifices made by that military.

VR: Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, Mr. President. But just a moment ago, you stated “ It was the decision of the Republic to intervene themselves in the conflict with the Yellow Star Republic, while the Federation would move an overwhelming force to the other theatre.” This would imply that while Gaulic troops would take the helm in Lorecia, your own would do the heavy lifting in Teudallum. As you just stated, however, the Gauls did the footwork there as well. How does the overwhelming force narrative still hold up?

GH: Well miss Ravenclaw, it’s pretty simple; The military commanders of the Federation, the Republic and the Confederacy of Neu Engollon, whose contributions must not be forgotten, all agreed on a plan which would be executed in phases. Without going into much details, the plan was for the Federation forces to act like a hammer against the opposition force. The war however ended before that phase of the operation was reached, which resulted in a massive troop movement on the Federation’s part, without any offensive actions taken.

VR: I see...and would you consider Kobolis to be the face of the ATO at present?

GH: The Astyrian Treaty Organisation is an alliance where members are equal to one another. Each has a voice that weights just as much, it is not based on the “big boy” in the room. ATO has a unified face, it isn’t Kobolis who is in charge, it isn’t Gaul that is in charge, it’s not Woodstead that’s in charge, we’re all in it together. So no, Kobolis is not the face of ATO at present. Nor has it ever been.

VR: Moving on to the recent terror attacks that have rocked Western Astyria and the subsequent deployments to Kamalbia, what exactly are the goals of the coalition forces there, and what are the long term plans for the future of Kamalbia once the nation is placed under coalition control?

GH: In the past, mistakes have been made in regards to Kamalbia. In essence, the young nation was left to fend for itself. The result can be seen by everyone; A failed state, civil war, a population that has very little wealth or means to ensure food or other necessities. In times of need, people have always been quick to point fingers and blame someone else. Creating a mutual enemy ensures you stop fighting amongst yourself. This has happened in Kamalbia, where a base has been created that allows groups to point at other groups, other nations even and blame them for what happened and blame them for their current situation. The goal of the coalition in Kamalbia is, in the short term, find those who are responsible for the attacks against western Astyria and ensure that they are punished for their crimes against humanity. The long term goal is to ensure that the living standards of the Kamalbians improve, so that it turns into a nation. The end of the civil war, the construction of hospitals, the establishment of a properly functioning democratic state that is not plagued by corruption, those are some of the long term goals.

VR: The East Astyrian Treaty Alliance has recently deployed soldiers of their own into Northern Kamalbia, and troops from nearly a dozen nations have taken part in the anti-terror operations there. Does Kobolis and her allies intend to incorporate the EATA efforts into her strategic vision for the area?

GH: Not incorporating EATA into the long term goals needed to turn Kamalbia into a well faring nation capable of sustaining itself and its population would undermine those goals. We will liaise with EATA, of that you can be sure.

VR: As we come to the end of our time, I wanted to bring up one more hot zone on which Kobolis has been surprisingly silent. Just the other day, I met with the Aquitaynian monarch Samuel Reich, and he talked at length about the operations on the Insula Fera. As far as I can tell, Kobolis has never made a statement of any kind on the bloodshed and chaos there. Would you like to use this time to clear up your position on the matter?

GH: Of course. Though we might have remained silent on the matter, we have been watching the situation closely. We regret the collapse of order in that region and, well, I could go on the standard tour of saying “we wished we could’ve prevented it”, but I’d be conforming to the stereotypical head of state. It is the official position of my cabinet and myself that we support the ongoing effort of the United Kingdom and EATA to restore order to the area. The offer of support had been extended to the United Kingdom specifically, though they didn’t actually make use of it. It is therefore that no official press release had been given regarding the situation, as the parties involved had been brought up to speed on our position, which in the end, was what back in that day mattered.

VR: What kind of support was offered?

GH: A general offer of support was made. If the United Kingdom required anything that the Federation could provide, they would have asked for it and then the Federation would’ve looked at its options and the possibilities. This does not mean that a blank check was extended, but it was to show that the Federation of Kobolis was willing to help.

VR: Before we part ways, is there anything else you wish to talk about or state for the record? On this or any other subject we may not have covered here today?

GH: Well, I don’t think I can come up with anything else.

VR: Well, allow me to express my gratitude at being able to meet with you then. It has been a pleasure, Mr. President.

GH: Like I said at the beginning miss Ravenclaw, the pleasure is mine.
