Postby Flavionia » Wed Apr 17, 2013 6:36 pm

The year was 1792, just three years prior, Michianna had expelled the appointed Flavionian Governor, and organized itself into autonomous communes. The island had been captured from the now fallen Chezek empire, which had been defeated by Flavionia nine years before, the result of the victory? The island of Michianna. A large island rich in spices, very profitable to own, the inhabitants mainly colonists from both Flavionia and Chezek, along with a dwindling Native population. Unfortunately for the Michiannese, there was almost no infrastructure in Michianna excluding farms and small roads. Tusal (King) Basileus Novarume, had ordered 40,000 men to attempt to recapture Michianna.

"Bring her around the leeward side," ordered Generalisimo Halfandja Asar, the commander of the invasion force. "We've got 40,000 men to capture this place, and we're not about to have our first casualties lost at sea." The ship slowly turned and was finally within disembarking range. The men clambered out of the ships and boarded small row boats, reaching the shore with no resistance. Generalismo Asar triumphantly planted the Flavionian Imperial flag into the beach and said to the soldiers who had already arrived, "We are the greatest fighting force in the region, men! Our enemies are nothing more than unorganized mobs, We have the privilege to fight for the greatest empire Teramagnus has. You are disciplined soldiers, you are brave soldiers, and above all, YOU FIGHT FOR GOD." The men responded with eager cheering, and organized themselves into their divisions. The Royal Flavionian 1st-4th Divisions had begun their campaign.

A young gentleman making his way into the town of Krosnik, just 12 miles from the shore, after the early evening hours spent working the vast commons. He approaches the great courthouse where once great men of Nobility met to convict the criminals, and the hang those who protested their decisions. He enters, to come upon a congregation of his fellow peasants and tradesmen, arguing the legitimacy of claims by fisherman that a day before Imperial Warships were seen on the southern shore, but the storm makes their claims difficult to prove. No word has been sent from the villages to the south of any attack, so it was agreed upon by the citizens to send a Militia detatchment to assess the situation.

"Has been agreed that the third company of Krosnik Militia will ride to the township of Katyusha" The crier announced at the steps of the courthouse.

1st Royal Flavionian Division

The Flavionian division commanders weren't stupid. The typical marching order involved 60-80 Rafael's Rangeros scouting ahead of the main army,. Rangeros were elite scouts, a faction of the military originally trained by Comandante Rafael Ortega, who wrote a manifesto on Flavionian guerrilla warfare, as well as training the elite force, who imitated the fighting style of the Native Michiannese. They marched in a scattered formation, taking advantage of foliage to remain hidden. These men were scattered around the flanks, front and rear of any marching group. These men were were trained in firing rifles instead of the typical smooth bore muskets, which gave them an effective range of nearly 40 meters more than regular soldiers. These men fired from a crouching position and typically fired much more rapidly then regular infantry, they were lacking in their ability to fight in a melee, or a lasting gun fight, so were forced to rely on range and shock in a fire fight. "Look at that, looks like enemy cavalry up ahead," whispered a Rangero to his comrade. "Yeah, send a message to the sergeant, to halt the advance, we'll set up an ambush." The soldiers quickly relayed the message down to their Colonel. The Flavionian advance halted, and men attempted to hide within their ranks.

The Rangeros moved quickly, placing stakes behind bushes and hiding in a scattered line. They waited.

The Cavalry advance through the open field when the first shots erupt and the horses are hit on the left flank, the militias regroup and return fire to the ploom of smoke in the brush with their muskets, and sending 5 riders to warn the nearby communes to ready their militias. The first 3 ranks lay down volleys of fire to support to retreat of the others as they are useless against the thick brush the enemies have entrenched themselves in.
"Fall back!! Brothers we must fall back!" Shouts commissar Volodya Petrovich. The returning volley from the rangers however extinguish he supporting ranks, as they too begin their retreat to join their comrades.

1st Royal Flavionian Division

7 Rangeros lay dead. They had made the mistake of standing too close to eachother. 4 died nearly instantly, shots to the lungs, neck, head, they lied there, bodies twisted and mangled. The sergeant teared at the site of his dead comrades, they were his friends, Flavionian soldiers joined together, trained together, and fought together. 3 would later die from their injuries. The advance continued, there was supposed to be a Michiannese Village nearby. The Flavionians were going to try to find the village, destroy any resistance, and pacify the population. The sergeant brushed the tears from his eyes. He slowly shut their eyes with his palms. He covered them with a blanket and marked it with a crudely drawn palm tree, a Flavionian religious symbol. The rest of the division along with caravans would find the bodies, they would receive their funeral with full military honors.

With the 28 dead and 4 wounded unable to ride, the rest of the Company retreats, knowing that their battle with the rangers is unwinnable given the circumstances of the battle. As the company reaches a ravine the stop to organize a courior detatchment to warn the nearby villages, and the main fighting force goes to scout the nearby village to the south that could have already been attacked by the enemies. They quickly mobilize to spread the word, as the 3rd Company heads to the south, taking a longer route so as to avoid the rangers. However it is becoming late in the afternoon and the sun is setting, giving them only a short chance to ride before having to set up camp, the horses are also getting weary and may not be good for much longer in the day. They decide to set up a small camp with a covered fire inside a small wooded area and a small unit dismount to persue the village on foot while leaving the horses with the larger company. However it is too dark to use the looking glass so they must scout it cautiously approaching the village's outer fields. They find the bodies of peasants in the wheat fields, and the granary has as well as many homes, been burned. They send one man back to report, while the rest stay to search for survivors or enemy soldiers.

1st Royal Flavionian Division

The Flavionian advance had stopped for the night. Earlier in the day, they were forced to destroy several farms and kill resisting peasants. The Flavionian military was unused to killing civilians, but soldiers knew that they couldn't trust the cunning of the Michiannese, and therefore reluctantly destroyed several farms. Flavionian soldiers tiredly bedded down after several hours of marching. The ever viligant Rangeros didn't follow the regular 10 sentries per unit that the Flavionian line infantry used. Instead, approximately 1/5 were hidden, awaiting a possible attack while the other half slept with the main body of the invasion force. Soon, the camp was totally silent, aside for chirping crickets and snores. Some lay silently awake, mainly new recruits who had experienced their first day on campaign, too excited to sleep.

With the news of Flavionia moving throughout Michianna reaching the Chancellor, he immediately called upon his advisers and began to discuss what actions must be taken place. After minutes of useless arguing the Chancellor demanded that "everyone must remain silent and listen". He went on to state; "We can use this as a total advantage for gaining more land, earn a little trust, gain more followers. We need to send an armed force of 12,000 to Southern Michianna. Then, we control as much as the Southern region as possible. Following with the plans should allow us to gain as much land as possible. We will need to construct military bases within major villages and cities. The need to also gain the trust of the population is very important, all we need to do there is act peacefully. The option to arm some of these revolts will be used. Now, all of you, prepare our navy and army. Give out my orders and the specifics."

After days of traveling over seas soldiers rejoiced in the sight of land. Naval boats were quickly emptied by infantry. Chezek's primary infantry regiments were in orderly form and began to march. After hours of marching by farms, they eventually reached villages and one small city. They began to spread posters glorifying the Chezek Empire. Some citizens of Michianna began to smile as the soldiers passed out blankets, clothing and bread. While other citizens completely avoided the soldiers. A regimental officer ordered the construction of wooden bases with timber from nearby forests to be put up quickly. Some infantry have stayed within villages, while others have begun to move through Michianna with the authority of the Chezek Empire.

2nd Royal Flavionian Division

While the 1st Division had already seen limited action, expanded into Northern Michianna, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Divisions, a total of 30,000 men were still down shore, awaiting orders.

The Rangeros were on guard, as usual, the line infantry drilled with their bayonets, the mounted soldiers cared for their horses. Suddenly the Colonel of the 2nd Division marched to his soldiers, "Men, today we're moving out, word is that Chezek is trying to grab this island from their true owners, their true masters, we beat the Chezeks back and took nearly all their land, and back then, boys, I was just another soldier like you. Infact, I was in the 56th," Soldiers from the 56th Line Infantry Regiment began to cheer, he waited for them to stop, and then he continued, "Now, we're gonna get back in our boats, get to Southern Michianna, and take out these Chezeks, we've got to remind them who's in charge, and who has beaten who." Reluctantly, the 2nd Division reloaded themselves on their ships, they were going to be escorted by several battleships as well. The men were ready for a fight, but weren't ready for seasickness.

With the Chezek Royal Army advancing, soldiers continued to hand out blankets and bread. Some civilians complained about the blankets being itchy and feeling sick after eating loafs of bread. Generals constantly told civilians; "Do not worry, you people are not used to being treated to fine bread and blankets made from some of the best cloth! Simply return to your daily lives and enjoy the treats! Don't forget to rebel against the Falvionian regime at all costs!" There have also been protests against Cheztian authority in Michianna. Some civilians talk about soliders burning crops at night. All accusations have been deemed false and generals have assured the public that "justice will be brought to those who wish to do the natives harm."

The Chezek Royal Army has continued to advance through Southern Michianna. Rather than offering aid, soldiers have been ordered to flush out civilians from their homes and fortify villages. Some scouts have reported seeing Flavonian soldiers miles off into the distance. With direct orders from the Chancellor, soldiers have been told to hold their posts with utter force. Generals worry about what might happen during conflict, but find some ease knowing military power has grown greatly within the past years. Infantry are eager to do battle while some also worry about the late arrival of Calvary, which will come to the shores of Michianna in the coming days.

2nd Royal Flavionian Division

Finally, the men had come to shore, after a relatively quick trip, unknowingly, they had disembarked only a few miles away from the Chezek army. The men quickly got into marching formation, and it wasn't soon after that the lead scouts reported coming across the tracks of their army. The Rangeros were always ready to fight, and on high look out for enemy soldiers. The line infantry was prepared to get into battle formation at a moment's notice. However, the effectivity of long lines of massed shots may not have been the best strategy in the given conditions. Line infantry was therefore ordered to take a more scattered approach to their march, sergeants were advised by Rangeros to give the order to fire at will. Chezek troops had made little effort to cover their movements, considering the last war, Flavionian commanders doubted the likelyhood of having scouts or any sort of organized guerrilla. It was not long before the Rangeros spotted the Chezek army crossing an empty field, the few which lay throughout the country side of Michianna. Flavionian line infantry quitely spread to the edges of the forest, and did their best to hide, the Rangeros moved up using the tall grass for cover, once the Chezek rear was within range, the Rangeros opened fire at the horses, several fell, they knew they would have to move quickly to get back to friendly lines to avoid getting chased down. The Chezek line infantry was not within firing range and the Rangeros were able to escape without even receiving fire. The Rangeros did not bother to reload, they ran away before the Chezek cavalry had time to respond. They were no more than 10 meters away from friendly lines before the cavalry had reorganized itself and charged. Upon seeing the cavalry advance, the Line Infantry sprinted forward with machine like position, and the Rangeros maneuvered through the Regiment's gaps. Suddenly the charging cavalry was faced with more than 300 Muskets aimed at them.

Generals quickly responded and rallied soldiers to get into organized groups. One general ordered a group of cavalry to charge Flavonian line infantry. As the horses charged the infantry, men saw their brothers in arms fall to the ground, the sounds of muskets crackled through the air. As the remaining group reached one set of infantry, soldiers were blown down by the force of horses and swords. Smoke from muskets caused each side to have difficulty seeing the battle around them. Cavalry men who were knocked to the ground proceeded to fight with swords and bayonets. As the skirmish went on, Chezek's line infantry began to march to the sound of drums and flutes. They were spread into large rows to reduce the accuracy of enemy fire. Muskets from Chezek's infantry slowly reduced the amount of infantry from Flavonia's side. Being within firing range of Flavonia though, soldiers watched as their fellow men dropped to the grass after being wounded or shot.

Generals within surrounding villages began to organize cavalry and infantry for battle.

The Line Infantry was quickly ordered to fall back deeper in the woods, Rangeros quickly ran to the flanks to avoid direct fire and shot down oblivious Chezeks. Before they could respond, to the frighteningly accurate marksmen, they were overcome by Flavionian heavy cavalry, just as quickly as the cavalry arrived, they left, harassing the Chezek infantry as they attempted to reload, Flavionian infantry was able to reload in relative peace, as most of the Chezeks were trapped in melee combat before they could reload. Quietly, the Flavionian Dragoons came to the aid of the Flavionian melee Cavalry, they covered the retreat with incredible mobile and fast rifle fire. Once the Flavionian infantry was deeper within the forrest, the orders "Make Ready, Aim, Fire" were abandoned. They were replaced by, "Take cover men, use the trees, spread out and fire at will!" Unused to this style of fighting, the Flavionians weren't as efficient as their Rangero contemporaries, but had the Chezeks pinned down just outside of the forrest, leaving them exposed but the Flavionian infantry behind cover. The Flavionian Dragoons, left the cavalry to their own devices and maneuvered to the rear of the Chezek infantry, firing and running out of range before they could respond.

Large amounts of infantry have been pushed up to the edge of the forest. With constant fire it looked as if the Cheztian infantry might be able to push the Falvonians further into the forest. Cavalry has been rushed into the forest, horses and men were gunned down, but the Chezek's had a new plan to get rid of the Flavonians. Generals ordered cavalry to rush into the forest and throw lit torches. Flavonian soldiers began to scatter within the trees as the dry land and wind caused the fire to be moved around quickly. Some infantry and cavalry were cut off from the rest as the fire surrounded them. The soldiers cut off attempted to escape, but were either caught in the fires along with some Flavonians or shot. With very few escaping, they were ordered to go back to the surrounding villages.

Chezek infantry continued to shoot into the forest while cavalry began to chase down fleeing soldiers. Another force of 500 was said to be arriving shortly. Upon arrival, infantry was told to watch the back sides of the surrounding villages.

At first, the Flavionian soldiers panic. They scatter, and are easily cut down by enemy cavalry and rifle fire. It becomes difficult to breath as the flames engulf the area, suddenly, it starts to rain. Not a gentle rain, but a strong pouring rain that comes down in waves making it difficult to see. Flavionian regiment commanders call for their comrades, men group together not by regiment, but by finding eachother. The Rangeros split up, being trained to scatter in different directions and meet at the appointed area predetermined earlier that day. Some meet up with other retreating line infantry groups, eventually the Flavionians rally roughly. United but divided, soldiers reform themselves into their battalions and regiments. The Colonels of the battalions triumphantly call their men together, "You see my friends? WE FIGHT FOR GOD. He came to us in our moment of strongest need, Flavionia is the chosen nation. Do not doubt our cause. For it is honorable, Tusal Basileus Novarume is proud of us, God has a special place for us, even when the Chezeks fall to trickery and dishonorable tactics, we prevail, god watches over us. Do not fear death, for after death there is nothing to fear!" -Colonel Alejandro Bastil de Marines addressing his rallied soldiers. The men cheered. "We will reunite with our comrades tomorrow, for now, friends, we rest and pray."

The Michiannese militias from the surrounding villages have been roused to fight the imperialist invaders, as the sounds of fire in the distance has erupted between the two sides, and the honored soldiers returned from a hasty retreat. The scouts witnessed the battle between the imperial forces, and have brought forth 3 battalions of infantry and many more Guerrillas to hold back the onslaught, people have worked in tandem to form a line impenetrable by the invaders, however ineffective it may be, it is their only solid defense. They have been hurriedly building defenses such as charge breakers to fortify the villages, and asked Farmers to abandon their lands to prevent their endangerment unnecessarily. Bodies were found of people with the Chezetian Blankets were found in a field outside Primyut, a small farming commune, they were found to have small pox. A poster was released from the printers office warning citizens about the Blankets. The Militias have rode out to neighboring villages to warn them of the invading troops. A small force totaling only in the 2-3 thousand region has moved out toward the southern coast, the revolutionary warship fleet has been sent to eastern coast to guard any more troop ships coming from the lands off to the east. The Republican Guard has gone to the southern province to push the Flavionian troops from the two occupied villages, and to block any advance by the Chezek or Flavionian royal guard.

(2nd Royal Flavionian Division)

Of the 264 missing soldiers, 142 later rejoined with the Flavionian army, the number of total Flavionian dead is 260. The Flavionian division had regrouped outside of a small Michiannese village called Kuzcek. The men mourned their fallen comrades, but were also proud of them. "They died for Flavionia in battle, no death is more honorable than any other men," the Colonel told them. Now they rest with God, they have joined other great Flavionians who fell in battle honorably, for no greater reason other than for our Tusal, for our nation, Flavionia" This brought most of the men out of their sadness for their lost friends. Flavionians were resting. The battle had taken a tole, their once olive colored shirts and red pants were stained with mud, dirt and grime. Some stained with the blood of their fallen comrades. Fortunately, the Flavionians were shown courtesy from the neighboring Michiannese, who were fearful after rumors that the Chezeks, the other enemies were the real enemies. Some Michiannese were so kind as to give soldiers warm bread and other foods, most however, had to make do with the rations from the Caravans.

1st Royal Flavionian Division
The men were on the move again, they had spotted a Chezek village, this one was much larger than any they had encountered before. The Flavionian division split itself into their battalions and approached the town from several different directions, the town was effectively surrounded. They approached slowly, the cavalry kept it's distance to keep it unexposed from fire. The village seemed eerily quiet, the crunching and stomping of the ground under the Flavionian's boots were the only audible noise. The Flavionian's were dripping with sweat as they stood in the scorching heat, walking slowly, their rifles at the ready. Approximately 100 meters away from the village, safely outside of effective rifle range, the Colonel of the division, Erick Romero Hernandez, gave a speech to the division, "Men, if you die today, you will die today with honor. Remember men, Death and life are connected, Life is a part of death, as death is a part of life, do not fear death, a death with honor is equal to a life well lived, and the highest honor is to die a death on the battlefield for nation, but higher still if that nation is Flavionia. Make me proud men!" the Colonel then paused, "However, do not consider death the ultimate achievement, only be prepared to die for country, an alive soldier is always better than a dead one." The men responded with cheering. Nationalism always was a stereotypical trait of Flavionians. This is where the stereotype came from. The men organized themselves into their regiments, the sergeants gave the order, "Men, at arms, Men Fire by Platoon, Men, 20 Paces forward" Then the soldiers walked forward, rifles presented toward the enemy, aimed at the sky. The Colonel then abruptly gave the order to halt the advance. He sprinted up to the village and yelled, "Flavionian citizens, we wish you no harm, if your rifles are at the ready, we strongly urge you to point them down, there is no need to shed blood for this, we only wish to speak with you."

A gentleman from the town approaches the officer, his rifle slung over his shoulder, accompanied by many other armed farmers and iron workers brandishing sabers and muskets. The younger gentleman adjusts the rifle on his shoulder, and looks at the officer.
"Why have you come here? Have you yet to realize we wish not to be Flavionian citizens, nor Chezek, we wish no nationality, no King, nor Queen, no gods, nor masters. Has it occurred to you we wish only for a peaceful existence? We here on our grand isle have identified your men as brothers and as the lesser of the two evils. However, you brandish your weapons for an evil nonetheless, so pray you tell me, why you have come?" He takes a step back, and nods at the officer, as a traditional sign of respect in allowing another to speak.

1st Flavionian Division, Division Commander

The Colonel wasn't prepared for such a statement. He paused, scanning the Michiannese, they were an ungroomed and unorganized bunch, some shaven, some beared, young and old, men and women, surprised him most. They carried an assortment of weapons, swords, and even tools. He then turned back and looked at his comrades. All young men, none older than 26, watched him, their rifles pointed upwards, green jackets and red pants, nearly all clean shaven, some however, allowing a stubble, thin mustache, none bearded. He realized he must have been staring, and coughed awkwardly. He spoke quietly, "Excuse me, friends," he said, sheathing his pistol which he had pointed at the sky. "We come under orders of Tusal Basileus Novarume to come and restore Flavionian rule. I would like to personally apologize for any troubles and inconveniences this war has brought upon you and your livelihoods, but you must understand, I am a simple man. I am following orders. Please do not be aggressive towards us, we wish no aggression towards you. Our men are tired, we have been on the march all day. May we please have some water? May we please rest outside of your village? We are also willing to trade." He pulled out a coin purse full of Flavionian Somons, "Do you have any food which you may sell to us?" he asked.

The men all laughed, and the young man standing out in front approached the officer. "Keep your coin, it has no value here, we are no longer a colony. Here, we take care of those who need it, and if you truly mean what you say and wish us no harm, we will grant you your food and your water from what we can spare. We request you make a camp outside our village, so as not to interrupt our lives, and we will fetch you what you ask for. Cause no trouble, and you will receive none." The man turned to his comrades and made a gesture, foreign to the Flavionian soldiers. "I assure you, your efforts here will have been in vain, but we understand your position, and we encourage that when you return to your homeland, you take this not as a defeat, but as an inspiration, and do the same for your people as we have done for ours." The other men took off, going with several farmers to procure the excess provisions. The younger gentleman stayed however. "Excuse me, but may i ask your name, seeing how you are eating our food i see it only fit i know your name."

1st Flavionian Royal Division

The Colonel looked at the young man, and before responding yelled to his division, "MEN, at ease" the soldiers looked at eachother, then set their rifles down. He looked back at the man and said "My name is Colonel Hernandez, Eric Hernandez." He offered his hand to the man and thanked him once more. He shook his hand and walked back to his soldiers which had already walked off in their circle of friends talked, and waited for the Michiannese to give the water they had promised. The caravans were only carrying foods and feed for the horses. The Flavionian ships were bringing a steady supply of food back and forth from Flavionia to feed the soldiers. The Colonel sighed and searched for the 5 Captains, each one in charge of 10 Line Infantry Regiments. They were also close friends of his and he had served with them in the last Chezek war. He turned back and smiled as he saw Michiannese citizens bring food and water to the Flavionian soldiers, he suddenly changed his mind, he abandoned his search for his commanding officer comrades and instead searched for the young man who seemed to be incharge. Finally finding him, he said, "Excuse me brother, do you think you and I could create a treaty? Your village of..." He drifted off as he suddenly realized he didn't even know the name of the village, "Nanyut" the man responded simply, "Ah, yes, the Royal Flavionian Armed Forces and the village of Nanyut? You recognize that we Flavionians have no will to harm Michiannese, and if you haven't noticed yet, we are honorable soldiers who do not believe in harming subj-" he paused, "People who do not don the uniform, unlike our Chezek counterparts. If you are interested, friend, I will personally make sure none of my comrades harm your populace. All you have to do is allow us to plant a Colonial Flavionian Flag. Simply as a symbol of friendship. If not, an Olive tree drawn on a banner outside of City gates will be more than enough to demonstrate you are friendly to us Flavionians, that is all." He was eager to see the response of the strange man, but was afraid that he may have pushed their unstable relationship too far.

The young man paused, and looked to the dirt "I'm sorry but i cannot give you an answer, it would not be right to make such a large decision without the consent of the council. I must tell you that you are welcome to stay, and the militias will be warned not to harm you or your battle group, but we will return to your camp tomorrow with a resolution. I can say that we will never kneel under the Flavionian banner, but to stand aside you as equals is something i am sure we can agree with, we tire of fighting, but we are more than willing to if it shall defend the freedom we have made for ourselves. I will send emissaries out to the other villages in the area to report Chezek and Flavionian positions to me, and i will turn these reports to you, however, we will not provide you with information on our own troops or valuable knowledge of our own." he glances toward a crate of supplies next to a Flavionian wagon, bearing the royal seal of the Tusal, upon it lay a broken musket, embroidered in decorative patterns. "I suggest we take that musket, there." pointing to the crates "and fix the bayonet, and we shall put it into the ground, to signify our unwritten peace to the passerby soldiers. If an agreement is met, you will see the musket, if one is not, we will return it to you and send you on your way."
