Visiting an old friend... (TG for entry)

Postby Mokastana » Fri Mar 22, 2013 4:26 pm

Elizabeth Franshaw was not a fan of flying. Being from a Sea fairing family and living on beach meant she was far more comfortable in a boat than in the air. At least she could swim if the boat sank. The first leg of the flight was not bad, from her home in Juventud to Mokastana City Internacional. After that things only got longer and larger. Two hours from MCI to Rico Internacional, followed by an five hour flight to Marina Antonioni International. The planes were ones she had only seen on TV, supersonic birds capable of making even the farthest distances in such a short time, but five hours was still way too long...From what the Captain told them, they would fly into Paradisa, and board another, smaller plane to Aurora Naval Station and finally be in AHSCA. Nearly 14 hours of flying and now she sat on the slightly smaller aircraft going for a landing in Aurora. If flying was bad, landings were far worse, it offered the hope of everything being over, but it also offered the most chances for things to go wrong.

Sitting up Elizabeth turned white as the aircaft's wheels finally touched the tarmac and the plane coasted forward, slowing down. She remembered the Mokan Navy had expanded the Aurora Naval Station after a War game (hypothetical invasion of Aurora by Foreign power) showed the base to be inadequate even in the best of times. As such defenses were increased, additional RADAR was added and a functioning airport. The airport housed four Fegosian desiegned Airships for patrol, and also doubled as a civilian airport to meet the needs of an increasing demand for vacation in AHSCA.

AHSCA had always been a popular tourist destination, but previously the best option was fly to Paradisa and take a boat the rest of the way. And now an airfield under Mokan control had managed to shave off the only part of the adventure she might have enjoyed.

"What's the matter Liz? Still afraid of flying after all this time?"

"No!" She lied "Just anxious..."

The other girl laughed, though she had just met Arianna Lomengo on this flight they were becoming friends. While neither of them spoke directly about the kind of work they did(one a Senator's Aide to Henry Milano, the other a Hacienda owner's daughter.) They still found a few things to share, mostly the need to get away from the troubles back home. Being in their mid to late 20's without families, both girls found travel to be the best way to do that. Next to the girls slept a boy they had manged to pick up in Paradisa, clearly just finishing his two years of service after university he still wore his Navy uniform with just the name RIVERA on his breast pocket. From what he told them, he had been offered full time service but instead chose to go back to civilian life, hopefully to get a job in the Foreign Ministry. Needless to say, it didn't take much convincing from these two women for him to use part of his military savings to switch tickets and join them on an adventure. The fact he recognized their last names only added more reason to join them.

"Perhaps you should wake up sleeping beauty. Tell him we are going to land soon." Arianna looked at him with playful eyes, perhaps she was already planning things to do with him besides sleeping.

"Why don't you, its clear you have ideas of your own."

"And what kind of ideas might those be?" He asked lifting his head up. Arianna just smiled and turned back into her seat. Elizabeth just shook hers and waited for the unbuckle sign to light up...

*****

Once out of the airport, the three decided to get one final taste of home cooked food then venture out into the mainland of Aurora. It was getting late, but purchased a map and decided to hop on the bus to a nearby village. Jeep rental was expensive, so they decided to get away from the Naval Yard and hike on foot. Curious about who they would meet and what kind of adventures this land might offer. In reality, it was a chance to get away, and neither of them really knew just how important the others would be to the future of their nation.

Aurora was a fairly big island the second biggest in the chain outed by Animalpolis that sat to the South East of Aurora. Being the hub of government and commerce even on this underdeveloped set of islands it still drew a lot of tourists from Lamoni, Mokastana, Ganosia, Motokata and some others who loved the pleasent tropical scenery. The main villages had become more business oriented catering to the tourism booms this time of year when the weather was clear the monsoonal rains and storms were far off to the north now. Even though it was hurricane seasons on the islands tourists and locals were seldom detered from going about life or business. Those on the far more remote end of the islands away from tourists and politicians usually kept to themselves not usually seeing many outsiders. Many of them were the more distrusting types seeing the horrors of two wars brought by outsiders they had little desire to interact with many outsiders. For this family along the coast of the North East shore in a tiny village Nanao (named from the maiden name of Duchess Villa) the mother May father Tai, their daughters, Yui and Ui they made a simple living by building boats. Tai a reserved Militia man had fought in both wars and had him fill hoping for everlasting peace with his family. He had been a fisherman in his younger years but the wars left enough physical scars he felt it was best to retire and build boats. His wife a hommemaker if there ever could be such a thing in AHSCA where everyone had to pull their weight to get by and live.

Today was another day for everyone the parents worked at their home the girls went to school. The day drew on it was about time for their girls to come home but May had been watching the skies anxiously as it looked ominously like rain. "Hope the girls can beat the rain home. Be terrible to get their school cloths wet."

"Wouldn't worry too much love. Should be home soon besides we were able to get them really good material so should resit water."

"For 800 Credits a piece it had better!" she sighed slightly "Not sure why we're sending them to school instead of teaching them our selves how to weave and build. We did just fine."

"We did dear, but times are different now. Our girls should have an education to take them good paths in life. I mean who knows what will happen when they're adults after we're gone. These islands could change. Another war, a major take over, economic boom or bust." He finished sanding down the boards he would make for his boat storing them away from the rain.

In the lush jungle forstes the two sister walked along home merrily talking when they came across the party of visitors. "Ui look." yui nudged her along to a grove of foliage where they were slightly out of site.

"Who are they?"

"Tourists I think. Visitors from somewhere."

"Wow where?"

"Can't tell." Yui looked skyward when she felt the first few raindrops on her head. "Looks like rain soon."

"We should go."

"Wait those folks they be caught in the rain."

"So?"

"So mother and father have taught us always be kind and be open to those in need. They come from far away we should give good impression like our teacher tells us. Not to mention they ware walking in the stream. If it rains hard enough it will become swollen they could be in trouble." Yui went on Ui was hesitant "Yui wait..."

Yui went onto engage the group. "Saluton" she said to them but then remembers they were outsiders so she had to see if they even spoke the same language. "Vi parolas Esperanton? Paroli La anglan? -- English?" She knew enough English from school to speak it decently maybe they would too. It looked like a friendly group of folks just out to enjoy the islands. Ui darted to her big sisters side and cuddled to her side.

Above them the sky began to darken, but Arianna merely mistook that for night coming. While Mokastana had its share of tropical storms they were never quite like those in Xandadou. Alfonso Rivera on the other hand, after serving just outside the continent for the past two years recognized the clouds turning dark and what that meant.

"Ladies, I believe we should find some sort of shelter soon, these clouds don't look promising."

"Whats the matter navy boy? Afraid of a little rain?" Arianna skipped ahead, her skirt flowing with the wind. Why she chose to stay in her school outfit for a vacation was beyond the knowledge of either Alf or Elizabeth, only when Elizabeth caught him staring a little too long did she jab in him the side.
He looked at her playfully and then remembered he was suppose to be responding. "Not at all Ma'am, I just know the weather around here better than either of you." He smiled again at Elizabeth and walked on ahead.

Great, the last thing she wanted was to become the third wheel on her Boss mandated vacation.

While Arianna danced and Alf watched it was Liz who first noticed the girls walking over. Well, one walked and the other, obviously the younger one, hesitantly followed. They looked like locals, that was for sure, but even so she had not studied up on local culture as much as she should before coming over here. She knew the stereotypes, primitive people who still preferred wind over nuclear powered ships, but they had to be more than that. The older girl spoke in a language that sounded understandable, but not quite right:

"Vi parolas Esperanton? Paroli La anglan? -- English?"

"Si, Puedo hablar Ingles, I mean, Yes I speak English. I am Elizabeth Franshaw, child of Oscar and Elaine, may I ask your name?" It took her a second to realize she had used a formal introduction, rather than an informal one the situation called for. Perhaps the diplomat in her was taking over, or she just wasn't sure how to respond.

"They speak Esperanton, a useful international language, a few on the base spoke it, I never developed a taste for it." Elizabeth jumped when she realized that Alf had been standing next to her, somehow managing to sneak up, unintentionally, and catch her off guard.

"Quien estan aqui?" Arianna, who had yet to switch to English like the rest of the group, yelled and began running back towards the party. The last thing she wanted was to be left out of something.

Yui got excited when he spoke English at least a common language they could try and speak together even if she was probably more limited. She dected a hint of Spanish when he spoke back but she didn't speak a lick of Spanish it just started getting introduced into schools thanks to two factors, the Mokan friendship and base on the islands and the fact AHSCA now had it's own Spanish speaking area.

"Aah yes, I'm Yui. My little sister here holding to me like a doll is Uii. We live in a village nearby and because there's a storm coming I figure maybe we offer you shelter until it passes. Though it only rain it seems so maybe you want to walk back to Aurora Village."

Loud clap of thunder boomed. "EEp. Well coming on us soon but we aren't far from village. Maybe you come then when it lets up you return to main village. Yes?"

Uii whispered in Yui's ears about wondering if this was a good idea. They had cautionary tales about foreigners but Yui reassured her that things were fine.

It was Alf who spoke first, being an officer of the Mokan Navy meant he had to have a certain gentleman like quality about him so his words were carefully chosen.

"We wouldn't want to intrude on your home, I am sure there is a room we can get in a village around here. I may just have to ask for directions."

Elizabeth looked from Alf to the girls, neither looked particularly threatening, even if one was dressed in Mokan Navy DPU's. She didn't want to be caught in a storm on her first day of vacation. When she first left her thought was that maybe she could meet some local leaders, maybe even the Dutchess if she got lucky, she wasn't so sure now, but perhaps a chance to get away from the tourism trade for a while sounded like fun. No doubt Arianna wanted to play tourist and visit the nude beaches, but Elizabeth was a politician at heart, her goals in coming here were to learn about Mokastana's more unique ally, and understand why the Socialist had taken so much effort to ensure the Islands were protected. Maybe that was her bosses intent, working for a man like Milano meant she was always guessing what his motives were. Maybe that was how he preferred it.

"People! Let's go to the village, maybe they have an awesome party or something coming up. I can't wait to celebrate!"

As usual, Arianna opened her mouth and spoke some insane nonsense. Stupid little rich girl, Elizabeth thought to herself. Surians had all the luxuries of Capitalism and the benefits of Socialism, creating spoiled brats like her. Well, that might have been an extreme, not everyone held her beliefs and she had to respect that, but it didn't mean she had to like it.

After a while it seemed like they had began to walk towards the village, and she began to speak to the girls out of curiosity.

"So, how do you like living so close to the Mokan Naval Yard? I imagine it would be something to get used to."

"Well yes we had to get used to it some but now it's like it's always been there. It's great to take shelter in during hurricanes and helps us real quickly after. Well my sister and me haven't known a time without it but our parents sure have. "

"I would love to meet them," Elizabeth continued, "I've been interested in how the islands feel with the presence of so many other nations involved here. Especially the Mokan side of things, but I may be a little biased with that."

She smiled to the girl, maybe this vacation wouldn't be so bad afterall if she could talk to the locals, and maybe find a way to ditch her companions, or at least Arianna. Well, maybe.

"Well as visiting guests I'm sure you'll get a taste of our full culture. Hey you're already getting a taste now while you wait out the storm with us. I bet as Mokan folk you'll even get to meet all the heads of the states here! Wow even the royal family you would be so lucky! We adore our leaders they're so good to us and always pulls through some tough times" Yui could go on and on about everything she loved about her homelands but before too long they reached their village and their family hut. "Home!" Yui called

"Glad you're home girls -- Oh--" Their mother was surprised by the sudden guests

"Hi mama. Well these folks we saw hiking felt it was best they come wait out the rain with us."

"F-fine I'm sure...." Their mother said but with some hesitation in her voice. "You girls have any school work to be done?"

"No mama." Yui said

"Fine then. Ui you help me with supper, Yui your father needs some help outside."

"Oh sure. Well guess I gotta get a little wet."

Yui took a simple straw hat as a means to keep the rain out of her face as it started a downpour outside.

"uuh won't you sit down all of you, please."

Being the male of the group, Alfonso spoke first.
"Thank you for letting us come in, during the storm," he hoped his Mokan Naval uniform would mean friend rather than 'trouble' to the locals, but he played it safe. "If your husband needs help I can go out and help him get things ready for the storm. It would be a small way to pay back your kindness."

The two girls sat down, Arianna realizing that the storm meant they had to calm for a bit and as such she began to calm as well. Focusing on her surroundings she silently began to study the home, the people and the ways they interacted, shockingly she was quiet about it.

"No that isn't needed, my oldest daughter will help him prepare. You are visitors from Mokastana, yes? Welcome to our island and our home. We are always kind to our visitors...." she tried to be sincere as best she could but three wars and occupations had grinded away her trust of foreigners even Mokastanans. Even friendlies have lead AHSCA islands down the path of trouble before.

"Panjo, ..u mi provas fari ekstra por nia gastoj? " Ui asked her mother (Should I make extra for our guests?)

"Jes, tiel fari bonvolu mia kara" (Yes, please do so my dear)

"What brings you hear? Travel, business, tour of duty? We just don't get many visitors especially way out here in this remote village. Many like to hang around Aurora Villa."

Elizabeth spoke first:

"I am here on...some business, some exploration, my boss wanted me to get to know more about AHSCA, away from the tourist traps in the main village and meet the real people. These two ended up joining me for the ride."

"Though I might skip out after the storm and hit the tourist traps, I am here for vacation after all." Arianna spoke quieter than before, but still the restlessness in her voice subtlety, slipped through.

"And I am here because these two ladies kidnapped me, I just finished my mandatory service up at Paradisa Naval Station, ended up coming down here to see the sights."

"I see. Yes the best way to understand us to visit many of the villages that dot these islands. I guess my own girls showed you the same kindness we're known for by offering you shelter here. It isn't always pleasant to try and find your way around in the heavy rains so you sure are welcome here until it lets up."

OOC: Sorry it took me so long, I accidentally the drug cartels and a war fell into my lap. Needless to say my attention has been elsewhere trying to avoid another civil war.

IC:

Alfonso smiled: "Thank you again for letting us take shelter here, but it is our custom to give back to those who help us. So please, anything you may need help with around here we would be willing to work on."

It was at this point an interesting question came across Arianna's mind:

"I've heard of this happening occasionally, but how often to people really come out here and go native? Do they get looked upon differently by the locals? I know I have heard of a family friend who came out here once, ended up selling all his possessions and building a hut in the middle of the woods out here after immigrating to AHSCA. He might have tried to join a village, but wasn't it even the old Leaders of Aqua Anu who moved to AHSCA, allowing it to join the Mokan Federation?"

Elizabeth gave her a quick dirty look, the question sounded inappropriate, but from what she had learned about Arianna so far was that she was willing to take the step before looking where it ended up.

"Yes these island certainly have such effects on people. We've had immigrants from far away nations, military and political defects all coming and going native. The simplicity yet challenges we face seems to draw people who need a change of environment. Storms and poverty be damned they don't mind it in the slightest. The husband of our Grand Duchess is just one of them."
