The Shipmistress looked at him somewhat mistrustfully, but smiled, to be diplomatic. "I am Shipmistress Ay-Ir Klgamn of the Imperial Oogish colony ship Married To A Far Horizon. It is a pleasure to make your aquentince. As for those 'two behemoths', this is Ayir"-she gestured to the one on her left-"and this is Sfr"-she gestured to the one on her right. "They are my guards. In general when meeting new species, the servants of the Empire come prepared as.....as...not all races are as willing as yours to talk and be civilized, as I'm sure you know."

Nd'Jamnud laughed a hearty, mechanical laugh. "I surely do not know. Are you saying there's more life out there? And shipmistress, if I may, if we wanted you destroyed, we would've done it long ago." He nodded. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Though," He added, "I thought you'd be more impressed by the battle regalia." He gestured to his shimmering guard. From behind him, one of his guards stepped forward and whispered something into his ear. "Really?" He turned to the xeno. "You have one of the highest honors about to be bestowed upon you, Shipmistress. The God-King himself is coming to meet you." What Nd'Jamnud didn't mention, however, is that the entirety of the Home-Defense Fleet - Seventy Five ships in total, is being brought with him, just in case.

The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

The Shipmistress smiled, baring her small, pearly teeth. "More life? Oh, there are far worse denizens of the galaxy than myself or Ayir here. Many are humans, and unfortunately, they only like each other. These days it's next to impossible to survive in this galaxy with all. These. Humans. As for your battle regalia, it is impressive, but given that I used to work on a Navy supercarrier....well, there's not much that can compete with that. I'm sure you could have killed us if you wanted, given that we're a lightly escorted colony squadron. I look forward to meeting your God-King. He's your ruler, yes?" She paused, quickly peeled a lemon, cut into into slices, and began eating it like it was an apple. She offered the xeno a slice. "Lemon wedge?"

Nd'Jamnud shook the offer off, unsure of whether the shipmistress was aware that if he took out his re-breather he'd die. "Yes, He is." He said, with considerable simplicity. "And I wasn't quite sure," He continued on. "Why you arranged this meeting." His eyes began to narrow. "I was wondering, why, you'd invite a species that you've never encountered before onto a ship holding thousands of your people." He leaned forwards and down so as to only be heard by the shipmistress. "In my opinion." his top pair of eyes shifted around. "I don't trust you, or anyone aboard this ship. Don't take personal offense to it. I suppose it's simply the culture of our nation." He leaned back out, and gestured around him. "And the culture of yours." He breathed in deeply, inhaling a lot of Methane from his tank. Throughout the bridge resounded the respirator's noice.

The Shipmistress inhaled sharply and her eyes narrowed. "Fair enough. There are many reasons to invite you. We've had some.....unpleasant....encounters with other species. We'd prefer to avoid having that happen again, thus we try to avoid conflict when we make a first contact. However, since humans and some others"-she cuffs a passing Xer'can drone on the back of the head, hard, knocking it to the ground. "we maintain a strong military. Is your respiration non-oxygenated?", she asks, gesturing to his rebreather.

Nd'Jamnud nods, and responds in the metallic voice. "Yes, we are. Methane related. You die in our environment, and we die in yours. Isn't it slightly ironic that we, impossible to talk in person under normal circumstances, are now doing so thanks to technology?" He gestures all around him. "I suppose this is all Oxygen."

She nodded. "Mostly nitrogen and some helium, but yes, it is. Although the Unggoy in our Empire also breath methane."

The Unggoy? You mean, there's different types of you?" Nd'Jamnud looked around, and failed to see any Methane-Breathers on the bridge. "So, I have something to ask of you. Although I know you are not as high in rank as I, I know that you are still the leader of a ship. What do you do in your spare time? It's a strange question, isn't it? The first thing I think of asking after meeting some Xe-New species," he quickly corrected himself. "Is what you do for fun."

Just then, a Grunt walked in, walking crisply. It spoke in perfect Oogish. "Madam, NAVCOM has sent the requested reinforcements. They'll arrive fairly soon." The Shipmistress nodded, instructed the AI not to translate his words, and turned back to the Transothraxian. "Tayîr here is one of the Unggoy I mentioned."

The Oog glared at Nd'Jamnud. He was being extremely rude and showing poor breeding. The Shipmistress muttered unpleasant curses under her breath. Tayîr gave the xeno a look of studied contempt and walked off.

OOC: the AI did not translate her cursing

IC: The Shipmistress huffed and put on a caustic smile. "Merely commenting on your excellent manners. Now, to business. Is there any way we could coexist on this planet? It does not appear to be inhabited, unless someone is interfering with my scanners. If not, I'm sure a number of companies would give you vast amounts of money for mining and plantation rights to some areas."

OOC: You don't need a translator to discern when someone is upset with you or not.

"It is possible. We were planning on settling it." His nostrils flared, a sign of suspicion in Transoxthraxian culture. "I will talk it over with the God-King and the Macro-Architects. It is not up to me, unfortunately. However, keep in mind that the God-King may... Not answer to money." he was going to add, He only answers to blood and piety. In a sarcastic tone, because that would have been seen as not only heresy on his part, but an immense dishonor to respond to a foreign Xeno by showing disrespect to the supreme ruler. "And, Shipmistress, on a personal level, I'd keep more restraint on your sarcasm. You never know who you're insulting, and when they may..." He made a sudden playful grab infront of the shipmistresses' face. "... Strike." He grinned inside his re-breather. "However, if you really do want to settle this planet, then you must, as I mentioned before, speak to the Macro-Architects, a triumvirate of Transoxthraxians in charge of colonization. I suggest you don't mention peace or harmony. And, if you truly wish to settle these thousands of your people on the planet, definitely do not mention them."

Sfr and Ayir both ignited their swords when the Transothraxian made his little grab, and growled menacingly. The Shipmistress loosened her pistol and inhaled sharply. These xenos were very rude."Thank you for your advice. So basically, are you saying if we want to settle here or make money off this world, we must go to war. Perhaps your leaders will have a more civilized outlook on the survival of their race."

The Terran command ship had been observing intently, broadcasting the recorded data during meeting between the Oog and the Transoxthraxians. So far, nothing had happened yet, and the meeting had only been going on for a few minutes when the ether crackled to life.

The 'Captain' AI recieved a short message from Terra Novam Command:

This could get ugly real fast. Our intel seems to confirm confirm the 'Thrax's claims that this system is part of their territory. Your orders are as follows: do not engage unless fired upon. If Transoxthraxian vessels attack Oog, do not intervene. If Oog attack Transoxthraxians as agressors you are to engage the Oog. If Oog act in self-defense, do not intervene. Contact both parties before military action if possible. Await further instructions.

Solid copy, Command.
The Drone Carrier sent a short burst of protocal packages to its squadron:

This was now a DEFCON 4 situation.

Terrans are extremely paranoid, and with good reason.

Okay, fixed it.

IC
Terra Novam Command Center

Governor Mason was weary; having stared at readouts for the past 72 hours. A lot had happened in this time, but First Contact between Oogium and Transoxthraxia was the most concerning. A war involving these two could destabilize half the Galaxy, and now that the Imperial Government was about to grant full autonomy to Terra Novam this was deemed intolerable, as the young state couldn't survive if dragged into such a conflict.

Mason went down to his imaging room, and placed a call to SecDef Wolfe.
Travis Wolfe, go ahead Mason.
Wolfe, I'm gonna need you to speed up the transfer of the Imperial forces in this galaxy. It looks like war could be coming and the Colonial Navy is nowhere near large enough: we're outnumbered 8 to 1!
Okay James, I'm going to take your word for it and issue an executive command. But that means that responsibility everything that happens falls solely on you!
Hey, out of the two of us, who was the guy who predicted the CIvil War? And who sat on his ass and drank himself into a stupor on the day it started?
Okay, okay, point taken! The Imperial Garrison is, as of now, part of the Terra Novam Military. Now, I've got bigger problems to deal with here! Wolfe out.

After finishing the call, Mason opened a comm link to his command team.
Attention! Prepare three more squadrons of drone ships to travel to the Contact zone. Have the entire military on medium readiness. Be ready to open comms between us and the opposing parties, I'd rather see this end with as little bloodshed as possible; we will try to mediate. And make sure those drones are launched within half an hour!

OOC: Just to say, you wouldn't know what we're called. This is our first contact.

r and Ayir both ignited their swords when the Transothraxian made his little grab, and growled menacingly. The Shipmistress loosened her pistol and inhaled sharply. These xenos were very rude."Thank you for your advice. So basically, are you saying if we want to settle here or make money off this world, we must go to war. Perhaps your leaders will have a more civilized outlook on the survival of their race."

"That is not what I said." Growled Nd'Jamnud. "What I am saying is that some of us," He pointed to himself, "Would rather if we were the only species in this galaxy. If you'd like to secure mining rights, I'd suggest that you mention that there will be no cultural influence upon the planet as a whole.

Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

The Shipmistress scoffed as the transmission blared out in the bridge, and the AI translated her every word. "Oh! They'll accept our envoys on their ship, will they?! Assessor, if you wish to keep your world strike now. The humans are not kidding. My reinforcements-" Tayîr jogged back in. "Ma'am! The squadron is arriving now! Three battlecruisers, five destroyers and nine cruisers."
Klgamn nodded sharply. "Bring us into defensive formation with them." She turned to Nd'Jamnud. "Listen to me. Your God-King may not like us or want us on this planet. But every group of humans we've encountered so far-do you know what their only goal has been? Burn us-every. Single. Non-human race in the galaxy. These humans will play diplomacy, maneuver their ships into our formations, then, when it suites them, they will kill us. All of us."
She turned back to the bridge and ordered the AI to stop translating her words. "Bring the new arrivals into Fdra formation and charge weapons and shields. Get the slipspace drive charged, I'll not have the blood of 95,000 innocents on my hands."

Nd'Jamnud was confused as to what was happening. He clicked on the transmitter of his exo-suit that communicated directly with the bridge of his flagship. "What is this?" He asked. "I am receiving reports of a third opponent."

"That is correct Assessor." Answered a NAV-Biarch. "We are reading three.... no four.... unknown battle groups, possible hostiles, recommend diversion of the fleet's weapons, Assessor."

"I am the assessor, and you are not." Nd'Jamnud growled back into the transmitter. "Know your place. Follow my orders as I give them." He then left the transmitter on as he began to speak to the shipmistress. "We'll fire on their ships. But you will fire first. I want to make sure you are not tricking us." He nodded towards the shipmistress to proceed.

OOC
Thrax, I know who you are because my secret intelligence agency keeps an eye on everyone in the galaxy. (Actually I read your factbook.)

IC
/GENERAL QUARTERS\! Active observation by "Faction 2" has detected us! Prepare squadron for battle. Launch all fighters at my command. Order remains: do not fire unless fired upon. Await further... Additional force detected. Contacting Terra Novam Intel Database: Force belongs to faction "Union of Independant Republics". Assessed threat level: /MINOR\. Designate faction: "Faction 3".
Will attempt to contact all factions. /DECLOAK\.

As the drone ships dropped their cloaks, the command ship started broadcasting a message in all known languages and frequencies.

The Terran Dominion is here to observe. We are not agressors and have no intention of attacking you. But we will eliminate all forces who attempt to engage Terran vessels.

Now, governor Mason's voice came through the ether:
Listen, whoever y'all are! He said, in the usual Texas drawl; which always happened when translating Kalmar to English.
Kalmar is the Terran language, and translating to English is an automatic procedure because there's so many viruses... erm, humans out there.

I should send a battle fleet and turn that planet into a molten hellhole so there's nothing left to fight over!
Mason let out a long, exasperated sigh, and continued.
But I won't. This isn't my problem or that of the Dominion, but I will not stand by and see half the galaxy tear itself apart! So I'm giving you a simple choice...
On three sides of the disputed system, a squadron of drone ships emerged, this time uncloaked and fully prepared for battle.
The usual composition of a drone squadron: 2 carriers, 3 destroyers. Each carrier holds 80 drone fighters.

Oogium and Transoxthraxia: you lot stop arguin'! I know this planet belongs to the Thrax, but I don't see anything on the surface! No structures, nothing! So why the hell wouldn't you divide it up? Back home we sell the planets we don't use to others and it's worked fine for us.
Mason paused for a while, thinking of a way to make his next statement without triggering the war he was trying to prevent.
He couldn't think of anything.
Okay, I'm gonna be blunt. We will help you destroy these cursed Humans, and help you invade them if necessary. In return, you let the Oog take part of this here planet, and I'll give one of mine to Transoxthraxia!
Terrans are not human, we are humanoid but from a different lineage. We consider Humans to be viruses...

The governor waited for a response to come. At Terra Novam, the military was now at full readiness and had focused on the central planet of every system, for they were too few to properly defend them all.
Up in space, at the conflicted zone, the carriers all launched 20 of their fighters, who proceeded to form a cordon around their respective squadron's ships.
Though these drones were outdated, they could still reliably take on all three opposing factions, and emerge victorious; though heavily damaged.
But it didn't matter who would win; the Terran drones were expendable. What would happen after the battle, that was the Governor's concern.
All he could do now was watch and wait...
