So putting civs there won't really work.

I was planning on putting a Yugazn Vong like nation there.
how did you devoid and entire region of planets and stars?

Handwavium of the most splendid order. I have a post on it in my Factbook I do believe.
Think of it like semi-sentient Warpstuff that can transmute regular matter. I would explain further, but I'm on ze phone.
The post doesn't really explain anything, though.

I agree mabey with an extremely large NPC empire comes out o the shadows or far reaches of the galaxy and wages war on all groups which could lead to having separate threads IE: war in the south, war in the north, war in the west, war in the east, even more specific if it gets to clogged up. And then it could form more alliances between the south, north, etc... after they are all defeated

evil
its a material that converts other matter into it self over time and grows rapidly like a cancer some races can control it but ill let G go into detail.
Ahhh, flowmetal... good time, good freaking times... i was able to kill 1... only one... it freaking ate pretty much my entire orbian fleet... damned you G-tech... feel the pity of the Neo Orbians... and god i hope you dont do that to the Novaarcs... well, the Novaarc are far more advanced the the Orbians ever were... but still, G- for the sake of our firendship and past, dont you dare doom my Novaarcs...

Flowmetal- A curious exotic form of matter, flowmetal is the true secret behind the might of the Ascended, and indeed the material that allowed them to Ascend in the beginning. When the first primitive Dive Engines were created on the First Prime by methods now lost to the Ascendancy, the ships equipped with them traveled through the Dive at a speed roughly equivalent to contemporary vessels, however they needed a tremendous amount of energy in order to breach the Veil going either way. Thus the original interstellar vessels of the Chosen Empire, the predecessor of the Ascendancy, were essentially enormous power plants in order to allow superluminal transit. Flowmetal was discovered after the first few successful Dives as a small film of unknown matter that accrued on the hulls of the Chosen Empire's ships for a brief time after they emerged from BelowSpace. The film quickly dissipated, but appeared to corrode the hull of the ships, and thus an inquiry was made into the nature of the substance on the Patriarch's order. The substance proved difficult to isolate, night on impossible. Its corrosive properties ate through any container, and shortly thereafter it dissipated in a manner the Techsins studying it could not understand.
Post-isolation, these properties have been confirmed:
Flowmetal exists as a fundamental proton-electron combination paired in a tight orbit around an infinitesimally small rift or 'bleed-through point' of undifferentiated fundamental energy from an alternate dimension. The energy supplied by this rift allows the proton-electron pair to maintain said orbit by exerting a constant waveform which interacts with them in such a way as to prevent their mutual attractive forces from fusing the pair. This rift, however, is in its inherent state unstable and contrary to the regular fabric of space-time, and thus is prone to decaying and closing entirely, channeling the electron-proton pair into said alternate reality known as the 'Dive'. Ascended are necessary to sustain the existence of flowmetal in the physical universe, as their cognitive waveforms can interact with and be transmitted via the waveform emitted by the alternate reality, with the end effect of stabilizing the proton-electron pairings and allowing flowmetal to exist in the material realm indefinently.
So, if flowmetal is off from the Ascended, it decays over a matter of hours and goes poof. Additionally, since the balance of proton-electron separation created by the exotic waveform is delicate, extensively altering the forces acting upon the flowmetal pairs can push the orbitals too close to one another, causing them to overcome the repulsive force of the Dive rift and collapse into the singularity, removing the flowmetal from the baseline reality reality.
