I was thinking of switching over to a synthetic/robotic nation. Basically, the nation had once been a race of powerful cyborgs, but its limited biological components had come into contact with diseases that could not be coped with. On the brink of extinction, the species made a last moment attempt at survival by transferring their collective consciousness into a series of data dumps. The reality inside these data dumps are effectively self-contained worlds, each connected via a psychic link to each other. But in order to keep up this lifestyle, the demand for resources is extreme. And so the new machine race creates robotic bodies called 'platforms' to interact with the physical world and gather resources. Each individual platform has its own personality and the race itself still very much has its original 'soul'.
I plan on combining a lot of the ideas I had with the Niteris with my newer idea. Don't worry, they'd still be soul-eating abominations.
Of course, I'm going to put this to a vote. I'm fine with people wanting the Niteris to remain or the new race.
