Congress
Washington, DC

Dewey waited for the crowd to stop their applauding of his mere presence. He was nervous about how Congress and the American People would act. He cleared his throat before putting on a pair of glasses and looking at the paper he printed his speech on.

"My fellow Americans, a grievous event of unspeakable shame has befallen one of our allies. As I speak now, Portuguese soldiers are courageously fighting off the fascist Spanish Army. In accordance to the North Atlantic Treaty, the basis of NATO, we are obligated to go to war with Spain and those who aid her. I do not ask any more of you than what courage and honor we saw in the Second World War. I assure you that this will not turn into such an infamous event. I am therefore asking Congress to declare war on Spain."

1 hour later...

After the declaration bill was read aloud, the Congressmen and Senators voted. No votes against, with only 3 abstentions. The bill was immediately signed by the President and a notification sent to Spain whilst American personnel were withdrawn.

Dihua, March 31, 1950

While the Red Army suffered humiliating losses in Europe, one Soviet asset kept growing stronger and never lost the ground under its feet - the NKVD. Its network not only had not diminished, but had expanded to virtually every country in the world. More porous countries were an especially easy target for Soviet intelligence. Sinkiang was no exception - its politics were completely transparent to Moscow, no matter how paranoid Sheng would get.

Agents "Savchenko" and "Vanya" had already contacted the British intelligence in Dihua in preparation for the invasion. The palace was heavily guarded, but a safe entry could be secured inside it by one of the guards. Of course, this would not mean that there wouldn't be any firefights, but it could be used to capture Sheng and his associates before they get a chance to escape. This would guarantee a quick end to hostilies, and almost no time for the Axis to react.

The invasion would begin in a matter of hours.

(THIS TOOK A LONG TIME)

General Assembly of the Free French, Vichy, April 3rd, 1950

The room had fallen into a hushed silence; something very usually in the rather boutrious and chaotic field of French politics. There weren't even any shouts of anger, or condemnation, or Penninsular War jokes. No, it was just one man, standing at the head of the room, reading allowed the text of his committee's proposal.

"On The First of April, in the One-thousand nine hundred fifties Year of the Common Era, General Francisco Franco ordered The Spanish State to launch an unpresidented, cruel, and total attack against The people of Portugal. No explanation or justification was offered, nor peaceful attempts to resolve any conflicts attempted. It is the attempt of Tyrant to expand his nation by force of arms... the same force he has used to so cruelly oppress his people. We, The Southern French Republic, have taken it upon ourselves to act as a steward of the liberty, peace, and brotherhood amongest the nations of the world. We can not, in good faith, allow Spain's actions to go unpunished.

As such, I, Representative Hugard, place the following requests before The Assembly.

First, to Offically Condem The Spainish State for her crimes against the Portugese People

Two, to Declare a State of War to exist between The Southern French Republic, and The Spainish State

Three, to Recognize General Franco and his Junta as unfit to rule, and thus place as a condition of peace, he and his party's abbication of Spainish leadership, returning the right to Rule to The Second Spainish Republic or The King of Spain.

Fourth, to Declare the Portuguese Oversea's Possessions as under the protection of The Republic, and encourage The Protectorates of The Congos to sheild them from any hostile activity.

Fifth, to Authorize the Temporary Governance of Spainish Colonial Possessions, which may taken under Martial Law in future days, until such a time as The Rule of Spain has changed.

... We shall call for a vote."

There was no chorus; proceedure was followed as it was meant to be, with each member stating their choice seperatly and clearly. In the end, the tally was announced; 81% For, 7% Against, 12 Abstaining.

Orders were immediately sent to Muster the Armee des Sud, which organized on the Spainish border. Newspapers were snuck through the moutions and into villages all around the Pyrnees, to bring good hope to the Rebel to the abudent rebels. As soon as all had arrived, they would march...

Armée des Sud (Army of the South, French Regulars)

27,000 Standard Infantry Troops, with a variety of weapons (Standard Service is the MAS Modèle 36, but the M1 Garlands left in French armories make a strong showing as well)

20 AMX-13 Prototypes (We're using this as a test run of the new model)

237 AMC-35s

85 ARL-34's

40 FCM F1s. (Yep, we decided to build them)

400 Pieces of field Artillery

40 Cauldron Series Fighters

41 Refurbished Curtiss P-40 Warhawks

More equipment and troops to be delivered by sea at a later date, if nessicery

Partisans Du Espagne

6,200 Partisan Irregular Infantry, made up of former Spanish Republican troops and trained Spanish exiles. Formally equip with reserve Lebel 1886's, but many carry a motley assortment of weapons from their military or guerrilla days.

70 Partisan Armor, 32 T-26s and 38 AMC-35's.

5 Privately built CANT Z.1007 Alcione's, formerly property of the Italian Air Force, but captured by Free Spainish efforts in North Africa during the war.

309 Refurbished Willy MB Jeeps, with 80 having been mounted with machine guns

Detachment of 800 Men of the 7th French Foreign Legion, equip as French Regulars

0100. March 27 1950, Dihua, Sinkiang

The plan worked like a charm. A flare from a rooftop was answered by another flare from inside the presidential palace. Within minutes, a mixed snatch team of SAS and NKVD troops entered the compound, the former searching through the East Wing, the latter the West, securing all escape routes before converging back in the middle, where Sheng's bedroom was located.

High above the Taklamakan Desert, the air armada of slightly old, battered planes was arriving from Kashmir. In half an hour, air strikes by the Hornets and liberators would commence against targets in Dihua, followed by the brigade of paratroopers. The warlords' minions are about to receive a nasty shock.

0300. April 5 1950, Atlantic Ocean, off Evora

1938 was long gone. The world has since learnt of the folly of inaction when faced with fascist aggression. Not even the opposition, led by Winston Churchill, disputed the government's decision to aid Portugal, an ally of England since 1386. Britain's honour and credibility on the world stage depended on them standing up for her friends, and Britain intends to fulfil her promises.

Within 6 hours of the initial invasion, an ultimatum arrived at the Spanish ambassador's office in London. When that was duly ignored, war was declared and the Territorial Army was partially mobilised. The large peacetime professional contingent of her army allowed for the rapid mustering of an intervention force. Six years after Normandy, they were determined to restore the lustre of British arms in Europe. The alliance is set to make an example of Nationalist Spain.

While De Gaulle menaced the Pyranees passes, Britain played to its strengths at sea and planned to land directly at Portugal. With the equivalent of around four divisions invading the country, Spain could not seal off every port from an amphibious attack.

Evora, one of the southernmost ports of the country, was conveniently close to Gibraltar to benefit from fighter cover flying from the Rock. At night, small teams of Royal Marine commandos infiltrated ashore and radioed back the positions of key targets. The following dawn, the ships of Force B opened a tremendous bombardment. The 4.5, 5.25 and 6 inch guns of the destroyers and cruisers, together with RAF De Havilland Hornets flying in form Gibraltar were used to attack targets in or near the city itself, especially troop positions near the waterfront. The 14 inch guns of HMS King George V and the 15 inch guns of the Vanguards, meanwhile, battered encampments of Spanish forces around the city, where the battleships could use their massive ordnance relatively free from the worry of collateral damage. Meanwhile, scout planes form the carriers and Gibraltar searched the nearby seas for the Spanish battleship and her escorts. If they could knock out that key unit quickly, the Spanish navy would be powerless to hinder the landing.

At 8am, the first assault boats of the 4th Royal Marine Brigade began to come ashore. The counteroffensive has begun.

The French Radio Service

The 3rd World War: Humanities Folly
A dialogue for peace in the Iberian Peninsula

"The Nations of this world are about to be thrown into the throes of another devastating world war and they are to ignorant to see it, I plea that France shall stay out of this situation to avoid destruction, meanwhile the leader of Spain wishes to see peace in this world destroyed 4 years later after the end of WW2, how could he be foolish attacking Portugal and not expect the reaction by their British Allies. Meanwhile the Republican Spanish clamor for revenge in the Congo and await Charles De Gaulle to hand them Spain on a silver platter. In Washington D.C and London Clement Atlee and Thomas Dewey plan to "liberate" Spain of Franco by destroying it a 2nd time, have the Spanish not endured enough suffering as it, did they not just leave a civil war in 38 and face economic collapse?, yes they did and now the Spanish will suffer at the whims of world leaders. I say that Franco is not only unfit to rule but so are the Republican forces in the Congo. I propose a peace concordat in Paris to end the conflict and allow Franco to leave power in Spain and allow the Spanish people themselves to vote on whether the King or the 3rd Spanish Republic shall take power. The Germans might disagree but we are pursuing this course for peace, I say no to another war in Europe!, I say Spain withdraws from Portugal and ends all hostilities immediately. If Spain does not attempt to end hostilities within 24 hours, then they have caused their own doom France shall remain neutral in the conflict but the deaths of millions is on your hand Franco remember that!"

0430, Dihua, Sinkiang, March 27 1950

The attack had begun. Sheng somehow saw the attack coming, and was now exchanging fire with the Soviet-British special forces contingent. His paranoia obviously prompted him to equip his personal space in the palace with rifles, submachine guns and other small arms. He had no escape route - he was going to fight until the last rounds. Supplementing Turkestani forces near Dihua - two infantry battalions - had arrived to try and repel the special forces, but they were no match for Allied firepower and skill.

Around 02:30 the first flight of Il-2Ms attacked enemy air defence positions near the border, eliminating AA guns and machine gun emplacements. Motor rifle battalion 010/502 and 1st Guards Motor Rifle brigade began advancing from the west, supported by BA-64 armoured cars. By 04:00 they were in control of the entire Bortala region, having met little resistance. The remaining Soviet forces began their assault from the Mongolian border earlier, around 02:00, advancing southwest. Aerial attacks had denied any Turkestani forces from their path. The motor rifle units were basically moving directly toward Dihua. By 06:30 they were still about 100 km from the city.

Two flights of Il-2Ms used unguided rockets to disable the railroads out of the train station in Dihua around 03:50, and opened selective fire on various Sinkiang army units in and around the capital. Around 03:50, the fourth unit of Shturmoviks targeted Sinkiang army barracks in the northeast, eliminating enemy ground troops before they could leave and resist the advancing columns of motorised Soviet troops from the northeast. The MiG-3 squadron was patrolling for potential enemy aircraft, although it was highly unlikely that Sheng would have any in a working condition.

By 09:20, about 90% of Dihua was under Soviet control, with pockets of loyalists still resisting in the outskirts of the city. The dormitories of the palace were still a battleground - Sheng and a handful of officers and security were still fortified and exchanging fire with the Anglo-Soviet forces. They ran out of ammo around 9:50 and surrendered. Sheng was now in Soviet custody. By 15:00 Sinkiang was completely under Soviet control.
