New Olwe under attack!

Postby New Olwe » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:14 am

Grand Duke Jason Frost glared at his bedroom door. That had sounded like a knock, but he had requested that he not be interrupted except in an emergency. This had better be important, he thought before saying, "Come."
The door didn't open, but the maid lying beneath Jason said, "I'm trying to! It's not my fault you stopped."
Jason stood up, gave the maid an apologetic look and told her, "I swear, I'll make this up to you." Then he turned to the door. "I said get the fork in here! NOW!"
A nervous-looking young page opened the door and said, "I-I-I'm sorry, sir. I-I know you said not to interrupt..."
"Spit it out," Jason growled.
The page gulped, nodded and, with an extreme exertion of willpower, kept his eyes on his leader rather than the nude maid behind him. "Big problem, sir," he said. "Ships from New Nicksyllvania are approaching in an attack formation. I thoink we're being invaded."
Jason nodded. "You've done your country a noble service today, and you should be rewarded," he told the page. "Have you passed all your sex-ed courses?"
The page nodded.
"Then finish what I've started," Jason said. "Don't leave this room until she's completely satisfied." He got dressed quickly, then vanished into thin air.

Jason reappeared in the situation room. A group of military, political and diplomatic advisors was already in place. "What's going on, Sam?" he asked without preamble.
High Admiral Samuel Gillespie stood and activated a bank of monitors which clearly showed the enemy fleet approaching. "It's not the entire New Nicksyllvanian fleet," he said. "Either they've held ships in reserve, or only some of the lords are attacking us and the Emperor hasn't formally declared war yet."
Jason nodded. "Do we still enjoy naval superiority?" he asked.
Gillespie nodded. "We're slightly outnumbered, but their navy has a reputation for being the weak link of their armed forces. We should be able to inflict some damage out on the ocean. It's when the battle carries over to land that I'm worried about."
Jason thanked Gillespie for the information, then turned to his High General. "General Wansor, are your men ready?"
"Troops are scrambling right now," Magnus Wansor said. "They're being sent to high-priority locations first -- here at your palace, Embassy Row, you know the drill."
"Fighters have been scrambled as well," said Aurora Frost, the High Commander of the Aerospace Corps. "I should really be up there with them," she added in a mournful tone.
Jason nodded to his daughter. "Dismissed," he said. Aurora smiled her thanks, and bounced happily out of the room. Jason noted that she was already wearing her flight suit. He turned back to the others and said, "Have the troops on Embassy Row take advantage of the nearby terrain. We didn't just give those ambassadors views of the local rainforest because it's pretty. We can wage a full-scale guerrilla war from there. For that matter, somebody go make sure the plants in my garden are properly pissed off. They can add an extra line of security, especially the ones like Venomous Tentacula that are capable of locomotion." An aide got up, wand already in hand, and headed out of the room in the direction of the gardens.
"Speaking of Embassy Row, Milos is out warning all the foreign ambassadors of the impending attack right now," said Minister of War Roland Wansor, the High General's older brother. He was referring to Milos Ganush, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
"Good," Jason said. "Recommendations, Roland?"
"Escalate to STD threat level. Since we're currently under active attack it makes sense to do so, it will keep our troops in far-flung locations likeArea Sixty-Nine that aren't under attack yet on high alert, and it'll let our allies who pay attention to such things know that we're in trouble."
"I'd rather not involve our allies," Jason said. "If we bring in allies then they'll bring in allies too, and we'll still be outnumbered."
"Bringing in our allies may be unavoidable," Director of Intelligence Bryan O'Noonan said. "If Milos is really up on Embassy Row right now telling the Dekerins that we're under attack, then it's no longer our choice whether allies involve themselves. We'll just have to wait and see what they do."
"Fair enough," Jason said. "Anything else?"
"We should have our fighters strafe their ships," Roland suggested. "If their navy is really weaker than ours, we can win this battle on the high seas. Inflict maximum damage out there, and they'll be demoralized by the time they get here. They might even retreat without a ground battle, if we hit their navy hard enough."
"What about the possibility of a blockade?" Jason asked. "We're an island nation, so it'd probably be easy to do."
"Not necessarily," High Admiral Gillespie said. "They'd need to outnumber us by a much greater margin. They've got more ships, but not so many that they could blockade us. Not at the moment, anyway."
"Another thing we need to consider is tech," Roland advised. "What level do they have, how much, and how well do they maintain it? Technology won't work right if you don't take care of it properly. This holds true even for old-school methods of killing... it's why you polish that sword of yours so often."
"You know, it really creeps me out when you watch me do that," Jason joked. Laughter swept across the room at the masturbation reference. "All right, I'm going to hang out here and help you guys coordinate things," the Grand Duke said. "If and when there's a ground battle, I'll join our troops on the front lines. Sam, tell your men to go all-out. If our strategy is going to work, we want them fighting like Ralkovians."
"So even crazier than usual, then?" Sam asked, grinning. Without waiting for a response, he started speaking into his comm, relaying the orders to the naval commanders about to engage the New Nicksyllvanian fleet. Everyone in the situation room seemed to hold their breath in anticipation.

Aurora Frost went through her preflight checks and announced her readiness to take off. Being in a cockpit again felt nearly as good as the night she had spent with that Zeltron woman last week. Zeltrons had to be the best lovers in the entire multiverse.
"Nice to see you still know how to fly, Polaris," a voice from the control tower snarked from her cockpit's comm speakers, referring to her by her call sign.
Aurora switched to a private channel so she could communicate with the woman in the control tower without being overheard. "Lyona, is that you?" she asked.
"One and the same," the voice replied. "They're not going to let me leave this job until I'm dead."
"You could just retire, you know," Aurora said. You would never know it from looking at her, but Lyona was nearing sixty years of age... she had put her time in.
"And miss out on seeing you fly again? I've got a hundred guilders that says you crash and burn."
"You're on," Aurora said. "And if I have an ace mission, you have to do whatever I want for a week." An ace was a pilot with five or more career kills... an ace mission was a single flight in which a pilot scored five or more kills. Aurora had had six ace missions during her career... she was fairly confident there was another one left in her. As her fighter lifted from the ground and moved toward the approaching enemy ships, the conversation died down and Aurora switched back to the open comm channel so she could talk to other pilots in the formation if she needed to. This was going to be fun.

“Can I Daddy, Can I? Please?!? Please?!?”

Postby Narodna Odbrana » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:49 am

The Grandmaster sat in his beautiful garden, smoking an unfiltered cigarette and gazing at the autumn leaves. Winter was coming, and his bones ached with the thought of it. When I was a young boy, he thought, I used to love winter. Bear hunting in the forests of Montenegro, sipping šljivovica to stay warm as we waited in the blind for the bear to take the bait. He sighed.

He was not young any more, and now winter just made his bones ache. He still appreciated its cold, austere beauty. But that didn't make it any more bearable.

Across the gypsy woman scribbled something on the pad of paper in front of her. Her eyes had rolled back up into her head as she did this, and then they suddenly snapped back into cold focus as she tore the paper off and slid it across the table to the Grandmaster.

“Thank you, Mirela,” he said softly, and then lifted the note to look at it.

Father, are you here or off somewhere else? We were having a conversation. You know how lonely I get,
and to have you not pay attention when I'm talking to you hurts me deeply.

He shook his head, folded the note, and put it back on the table. Then he turned to the portrait of the young woman propped up on a nearby easel, as though it were seated at the table. The young woman's face bore the faintest touch of sadness.

“I am sorry, Nadia. I was just thinking...” he began.

Then, shaking himself out of his reverie, he said: “I don't know that we have the resources for this; we are tied up in Australia right now. And – to be frank – I am not inclined to view New Olwe as a nation we should assist; rather, I've always thought of them as a potential competitor.”

Mirela's eyes rolled back into her sockets as she began to scribble furiously on the pad. A moment later, the note she had scrawled was in the Grandmaster's hand.

I have resources here that I can commit to the effort. Honestly, Father, sometimes I think you are
ignoring me, shoving me to the wayside. I want to do something!

I am shoving you to the wayside, my dear, sweet, demented Nadia. But it would not do to tell you that, he mused.

“All right,” he said resignedly. “Come up with a plan, and we'll discuss it. But I'll also want you to tell me what we stand to gain by this. We do nothing without purpose – as you no doubt know.”

OOC: You know who we are and what we're capable of. Once the parameters of this struggle are worked out, TG me for assistance.

(Meh. It's fine with me to leave it. Not worth screwing with his post count over.)

Grand Duke Jason looked to the Director of Intelligence and said, "Our allies might intervene on our behalf. But what of our enemies? We've sparked some animosity in the past."
Director O'Noonan thought for a moment, then said, "Narodna Odbrana's a wild card at best. We've historically had an antagonistic relationship with them, but they're hardcore capitalists and very opportunistic. They might jump in on our side if they feel it benefits them. Ritteland... we can probably expect to see their ships incoming soon. We were rather mean to them, after all. Akros... they'll probably stay out of it, since we're technically no longer enemies. Karn Evil Nine... even Aratar's got standards. He won't side with people who persecute magic-users, though he probably won't help us either."
"Thank you," Jason said. "Sam, how are our forces doing?"
Admiral Gillespie glanced at the monitors briefly before replying. "Too early to tell," he replied. "We're still getting into position, no shots have been fired yet."
Jason nodded. "As soon as we're in position, give the enemy all we've got. Our plan depends on us drawing first blood," he said.

"Enemy aircraft being launched. Prepare to engage," Control's voice issued from Aurora's speakers.
"Looks like recon craft," Aurora said, squinting at the incoming enemy fighters. They'd likely still be armed, but she had been hoping for something more intense.
"Orders are to draw first blood," Control said. "Take them out."
"Copy that," Aurora said, getting her fighter into attack position and strafing one of the recon craft on its way past her. She saw several other New Olwean fighters attacking the wing of recon craft as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------

"So they're moving in for the kill, eh?" Commodore Nick Virgilio mused to himself before turning to his XO. "Full speed ahead," he said. The Captain relayed the order, and New Olwe's Third Defense Fleet moved to meet the New Nicksyllvanian ships.

Captain Avolino Baldasari looked out the bridge windows at the approaching New Nicksyllvanian fleet. "Hmm," he said. "Their tactics are better than I thought."
"An eventuality I prepared for," Commodore Virgilio told his XO. "I always thought the rumors of their navy's ineptitude were a propaganda snowjob designed to get other nations to underestimate them. Lieutenant Pasadore, fire at will." The weapons officer gave an affirmative, then relayed the order to the fleet's gunners. Virgilio would keep his ships in their current formation as long as he could to present the narrowest possible targeting profile, letting the forward gunners exhaust their first batch of ammunition before turning his ships and letting fresh gunners have a shot. It was a gamble to just take the broadside, but if Nick reciprocated the maneuver the damage to his fleet would likely be much greater. He muttered a quick prayer to Neptune as the enemy fleet came within range and the gunners let loose.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aurora looped back around after taking down the first recon fighter, but didn't see any others behind her... the other New Olwean pilots had apparently shot all of them down. She oriented herself back toward the enemy fleet... it looked as if Virgilio were going to keep them busy for her. Excellent. "I need a wingman here," she spoke into her comm.
"Pegasus Three is en route," Lyona told her from the control tower. "Congrats on that first kill, by the way. Don't get too cocky, though... you've still got four more to go."
Aurora was about to respond with a snarky comment when suddenly a dark cloud rose up above the enemy fleet and started moving toward her. "Abort strafing run!" she barked into her comm. "Enemy fighters deployed! Engage at will!" She strafed the front of the enemy formation with machine-gun fire, hoping to score an early kill or two before the dogfighting started, then went into evasive maneuvers and prayed to whatever deity happened to be listening that Pegasus Three could keep up with her.

"The privilege of opening the first trial in history for crimes against the peace of the world imposes a grave responsibility. The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant, and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored, because it cannot survive their being repeated. That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason." Not entirely true, my friend, and while there is no cause to RP it directly, some explanation makes things look better, overall, as opposed to magically having the soldiers just show up in place.

In any case, still watching it.

"Communiques just came in from Embassy Row," Director of Intelligence Bryan O'Noonan informed his national leader. "The Dekerins, Macureans, Draconians and Vorindun are all sending reinforcements, and in addition to that Youngoslavia has pledged their support."
"Youngoslavia?" Grand Duke Jason asked. "They don't even have an embassy with us, do they?"
"Not currently," Bryan replied. "But they're in our region, and our relations with them have been friendly enough."
"I guess this means that we can expect New Nicksyllvania to pile on more forces," Jason said.
"Probably," Bryan agreed. "And possibly for the Emperor to endorse their military action, which would make it an all-out war."
"War with a country that hates magic-users," Jason said. "Probably not something we want to get into... no matter how much we throw at them, they might never give up."
"It's a pretty sary concept, all right," Bryan agreed.
"The enemy fleet has been engaged," High Admiral Gillespie stated. "Unfortunately our fighters couldn't muster up enough suprise... they were intercepted by enemy aircraft before they could attack the naval vessels."
Jason looked at the screens, which showed the battle at sea in real time. "What the fork is Virgilio doing?" he asked.
"I ask myself that every day," Gillespie replied. "He looks like he's fighting to lose right now, but mark my words... he'll find a way to turn this into a glorious victory. That's what he does."

OOC: Grand France is right on logistics... while you don't have to RP every piece of it, you do need to take into consideration all the logistics needed when deploying 100 men or 100 million men. After all, rather it be 100 or 100 million men, they can't last with just a days worth of bullets, food, water, and fuel, among other things. ;)

OOC: Your thread, your RP, your rules, I'll leave you to RP as you want. I'm simply pointing out that bullets and food don't magically appear in the hands of your soldiers... at least in modern tech. We can't make you do what you don't want, just keep this in mind... many people won't RP with you if you magically have this stuff appear. I'd ask - for your sake and everyone elses - that you be at least somewhat realistic. I was planning on pledging support to you, but if realistic is out, I am too. Enjoy your RP.

EDIT: I also realize it's a game. And while it doesn't have to be 100% to the point realistic - it still needs to be fun, trust me I realize this - it should maintain some realism. Anyway, carry on.

ViZion wrote:OOC: Your thread, your RP, your rules, I'll leave you to RP as you want.

(OOC: Realism is semi-in, I just don't want to take things so seriously that people -- namely myself -- stop having fun. And math causes me to stop having fun very quickly, so I'd prefer to avoid getting bogged down in it too much. Also, as far as things magically appearing... it's been well-established in both this thread and other places that New Olwe is a magic-using nation, so although I try not to use magic as a godmodding tool I do think a certain amount of leeway might be in order here. If using magic in that way, in extreme moderation, is too unrealistic for you, then you will be missed since I've posted in threads with you before and do have some respect for you. But that's the way the wombat drools, so oh well.)

OOC: If you use magic, then that's a little different - I didn't realize your nation was based off magic. I was going off the assumption that were a MT nation without magic. If you (and others) have magic and that's how you transport things, then that's obviously part of your RP. I'll involve myself in RP's which use magic and what not so long as it doesn't change things - typical character RP's for school, politics, etc are fine; wars and the like can change things dramatically so I don't involve myself in those types of RP's though...)

Aurora swerved to avoid some AA that came her way. An explosion behind her answered her earlier question. I guess Pegasus Three can't keep up with me, she thought, then she activated her comm. "Control, I need a new wingman."
"Already?" Lyona asked. "You don't waste any time, do you?"
"It's pretty nasty out here," Aurora said.
"That's exactly why I can't send you a new wingman," Lyona said apologetically. "Everyone's otherwise engaged. In fact, you were outnumbered when you joined this fight."
"I saw that," Aurora said. "870 to 690. What do we have in reserve?" She took an opportunity shot at a passing enemy fighter and then swerved again to avoid more AA.
"About 400," Lyona replied. "100 of those are Z-90s, which as you already know need more testing. They're too experimental to put into a combat situation right now."
"Right," Aurora said. "I've flown one as a test pilot. There are still a lot of kinks to work out. Wait a minute. Did we petition Youngoslavia for military aid?"
"No, they're providing it voluntarily," Lyona replied. "If you were still in the situation room you'd know this."
"Horseshit," Aurora said. "If I was still in the situation room, I'd be asleep by now." She watched the incoming Youngoslavian ships, which were too far away to be in firing range and, in fact, probably couldn't be seen by ordinary human eyes. Aurora's sharp senses were inherited from her mother, who had been an Elf.
She ducked her fighter underneath a third AA salvo, fired a missile at one of the New Nicksyllvanian ships, and pulled back up quickly. The single missile wouldn't be enough to sink the ship, but if it started a fire on the deck or killed some officers by vaporizing a portion of bridge, it might distract that ship's crew enough to give the fighters a brief respite from the gunnery barrage.

"Okay, come about," Commodore Virgilio said.
"Sir?" Captain Baldasari asked, looking dumbfounded.
"They're moving in for a broadside," Virgilio said. "Let's give them one."
"They're awfully close for us to just present our sides to them," Baldasari protested.
"I would rather that we were the ones ramming them," Virgilio allowed, "but either way we're suprising them. And that changes the game. True victory does not come in a cautiously fought battle where your side doesn't take any casualties. True victory is making the enemy dance to the tune you call."
Baldasari could see the sense in that. It was a reckless plan, true, but it just might be crazy enough to work. "Come about!" he ordered. "We're going to give them a broadside." The New Olwean ships all started to turn, presenting their sides to the advancing New Nicksyllvanians.

(OOC: Youngoslavia ceased to exist. I've decided to RP this. Yes I'm going somewhere with it, and yes New Nicksyllvania will get an ally out of it. At least temporarily, possibly permanently. And yes, there is backstory which will be explained, without sacrificing any of New Nicksyllvania's spotlight time.)

Aurora watched in horror as the Youngoslavian fleet, still just outside of the engagement zone, suddenly vanished into thin air.
"What the fork?!?" one of the other pilots asked, swerving even though there wasn't any enemy fire near him.
"Magic," Aurora replied. "Very powerful magic, and only two people I know of in this world can use it." Her father, who would never attack allied ships unless they turned on him first, was one... the other she didn't particularly care to think about. If Aratar's involved himself in this, we're all forked. Even the New Nicksyllvanians... by the time they find out what their benefactor truly is, it'll be too late for them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sir, one of our cruisers is reporting a fire on the deck and minor hull damage," Virgilio's communications officer said. "Apparently, some of these enemy pilots are kamikazes."
"Good," Virgilio said. "I like fighting an enemy that's as crazy as I am. Lieutenant Pasadore, have the gunners open fire."
The New Olwean ships, now turned with their port sides oriented toward the enemy fleet, gave the New Nicksyllvanians a full salvo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the situation room, Grand Duke Jason watched the two fleets approach collision distance. "What the fork is Virgilio doing?" he asked again, even though he thought he was starting to catch on to the Commodore's plan.
"Did you see that?" High Admiral Gillespie asked, looking at where the Youngoslavian ships had been.
"Planeswalker portal," Director O'Noonan said. "Forking big one, too. Must've been thirty mana behind that thing."
"Who's got that sort of power besides Jason here?" the Minister of War, Roland Wansor, asked O'Noonan.
But it was Jason who answered. "Aratar," he said. "He's back. Why won't he stay dead?"

Aratar, the Dark Lord of Karn Evil Nine, fell back in his chair and wiped sweat from his brow. The magical attack against Youngoslavia had taken a lot out of him, and he knew he wouldn't be able to duplicate it when the Pentagram Bloc arrived to help New Olwe, but at least for now that insufferable, self-righteous git Jason Frost was on his own.
"Deploy whatever forces we have left to New Olwe," he said. "Throw everything we have behind New Nicksyllvania. This is the best chance we've had to finish Frost off, and I don't plan to waste it."

(OOC: This is New Olwe's alt, a nation of unapologetically evil cannibal clowns. Hopefully it's okay for them to join.)
Karn Evil Nine is a horror-themed FT/FanT nation. Expect zombies, demons, eldritch abominations, monster clowns, vampires, werewolves, xenomorphs and possibly carnivorous/evil fairies. Because, you know, realism is overrated.
