Braystead, Voerderland, Artillery Battery, 200 yards behind bridgehead barricades 7:39 AM

"Damn!" Artillery Captain Pavel Coznasky swore as he heard the machine gun open up. The Xecuiians were not going to stop now. Blood was being shed.

"Elevate the guns and open fire! Kill them. For Voerdeland and freedom!"
"Ooorah!" The gun crew shouted, a harsh, fierce, barking shout. "Oorah! For Voerdeland!"
Seconds later, the entire battery belched fire and screaming metallic death toward the center of the incoming Xecuiians. A few moments after, the other batteries followed suit.
"Damn!" Captain Kittridge threw the leather gauntlet to the floor of the steeple chamber. "We should have at least had the chance to negotiate. Double damn and bloody hell! You!" He turned to the fourteen year old militia aide. "Semaphore the barricades. 'Hold for Voerdeland. God fights for you.' You!" He turned to another aide-de-camp, "Deliver a message to Lieutenant Anselm at the bridge. Tell him to make sure the charges are set and tell him I want him to personally inspect the detonator and cord. Got it? Go!"
Braystead, 8:21 AM. Sanctus Salvator

"Sir!"

The young midshipman's voice cracked slightly with excitement and tension, but his salute was crisp and professional, and Quintus returned it gravely.
"Yes Midshipman Caius?"

"The Pax Dei has reported sighting unidentified airships. Unknown numbers, they appear to be on the extreme southern end of the theater of battle."

"Attempt contact using international heliograph codes. Signal the detachment to continue, standard engagement formation. Make sure they know to keep with their triads and remain at bombing altitude."

The detachment of twelve airships had finally reached the northernmost city limits of Braystead. The four triad formations remained at 5,000 feet, but even from that height, Quintus could hear the rattle of riflery and the harsh concussion of artillery from the south end of town. He bowed his head

God, have mercy on all these here, friends and enemies. We are but dust, the animate clay. Forgive, oh Lord, Your servants for what we must do. Teach us somehow, to love, even in the midst of death and hatred. Preserve us by Your sheltering hand. Amen.

Seconds later, the Vastator class airship Pax Dei heliographed a message towards the indistinct blur that the lookout had identified as an airship

The Kaiserness Morgen I looked over the folder and nodded, "That should be it. Colonel Schuhmacher will deliver out troop reports to you on your vessel." She bows her head to Vinchero, "My men will escort you back to your vessel. She turned and started to walk away as to of the Vitzburgian guards split from the rest and walked Vinchero back to the Dominion. The Kaiserness noted something in her pocket, and pulled out the note that had been slipped in it. She opened it and gave a small gasp, looking around and crumpling the paper, slipping it back into her coat pocket as she stepped back into the motorcar.

Vinchero returned the Kaiseress' bow and was escorted back to his beloved ship. Once on board, he sent a request via messenger to the mysterious Colonel Schuhmacher, requesting a meeting with him as soon as was convenient. While awaiting a response, he lounged in the captain's quarters on the Dominion, restlessly awaiting the signal that the Burgians were ready to commence the voyage. How he longed to bring peace to those unfortunates in Voerdenland - every moment brought more of them to their untimely end.

There was a knock on the door to the captain's quarters, alerting Vinchero to visitors! When he answered the door, a tall, wiry man in the dark blue uniform of a Vitzburgian officer, thankfully lacking the accustomed kilt (or skirt as those from the north call it) of an officer hailing from the south, which was immediately confirmed by the Colonel's german accent as he spoke while bowing.

"King Vinchero, it is an honor to meet you. As a gift, I bring you a fine bottle of Vitzen wine, aged to perfection," He presents the bottle to a guard for inspection, "And the troop details of Vitzenburg." He hands the folder directly to Vinchero.

The Kaiserness Morgen I pondered the note as the motorcade gently drove past the Vitzen hills of the countryside outside of Vessels. She was coming to the conclusion that it was a trap by the Vitzenburg First movement, that is, until a burning wagon rolled out onto the road and hit the motorcar she was in.

The motorcade came to a screeching halt as from on top of a hill, figures could be seen making their way down through the snow, taking pot shots at the motorcars as they came. Three guards popped out of the motorcar in front of her while more guards leaped out of the back of the truck that was following them, but was having trouble on the snowy road. They had to trudge through the snow to reach the Kaiserness' car, all the while the figures were getting closer. Is this the end of Kaiserness Morgen I?

Fuck no!

The three guards who had been riding in the front motorcar took cover behind Morgen's car, the armor becoming saturated with shots from the terrorists on the hill. One of the guards pulled open the door and yanked the Kaiserness out as respectively as he could, while the others layed down suppressive fire with their new automatic rifles, had they been using their standard issue rifles, they surely would have been overwhelmed.

Finally, as the terrorists took cover behind fallen trees and rocks, the rest of the guard made a flanking maneuver, overtaking the terrorists. One in particular tried to get away, but one of the guards popped him in the leg by switching to semi auto, one of the advantages of selective firing. As they apprehended him, the Kaiserness sat back in her motorcar, clutching her coat around her and shaking violently. There hasn't been an attempt on a Vitzburgian leader in 400 years. She didn't see the guards approach, one clutching a rag.

"Mein Kaiserness, the terrorists were wearing these." He handed her a black sash with a white V on it.

"Thank you, now let us leave this place post haste." The guard nodded and shut Morgen's door. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the crumpled note, examining it a little closer...

Melhurst blinked. This was going better than expected, if the young pup would only watch his words.
"We are not a regime, sir. We are the elected representatives of the people. This nation's great tragedy is not that the current government was elected, or that we are now forced to make peace with each other, but rather that...certain elements of the populace could not find the...wisdom...to seek a more peaceable route. Be that as it may, our country is foundering, and we are the only ones who can save it. The Voerdeland Provisional Government is willing to recognize the Republic of Nova Voerda, and to work alongside them, until such time as nationwide elections can again be held. When we will settle our differences, gentlemen, with ballots, not bullets."
He made eye contact with Wayford. "A military and governmental 'Coalition of the Willing'. Even if we unite, though, I fear we will face war with many nations. Inoroth and Gratia Infinita, among others, have offered their assistance. Would you be willing to accept their aid?"

As Vinchero sat, still recovering from the shock the Super heavy Infantry had given him, a solid knock on the door broke his concentration. When he answered the door, a tall, wiry man in the dark blue uniform of a Vitzburgian officer, the Colonel's german accent resonating most agreeably as he spoke while bowing.

"King Vinchero, it is an honor to meet you. As a gift, I bring you a fine bottle of Vitzen wine, aged to perfection," He presented the bottle to one of the Royal Guards who had apparently escorted him in for inspection, "And the troop details of Vitzenburg." He handed a folder directly to Vinchero.

'How kind of them to format their papers to match our own' thought Vinchero.

"Thank you very much, Colonel. It is an honor to finally make your acquaintance. I must say that after witnessing your Heavy Troops, I am most interested to see how they perform in combat. And thank you for the wine, a most polite gesture."

Burnt Kohlenstoffburg Capital Building

With the murder of Kaiser Otto von Adifikum, the destruction of the Forscher, and the death of the Kaiser's wife and kids, the last name "von Adifikum" was dead. Nobody else had the noble blood to take the office. General von Kohlenstoffburg decided to take power with the Wirbel Military. The country turned from a monarchy to a military dictatorship. Not very much differnent, just another form of dictatorship was the general opinion that most people had about the "change".

After holding a speech to tell the people that the future will be fine and that the terrorists will be caught, the General sent out a telegram to the nations of the world.

Telegram from General Heinrich von Kohlenstoffburg, new ruler of Wirbel.

Hello, world leaders. As you may or may not have heard, Kaiser Otto von Adifikum has been shot and killed. The airship 'Forscher' has been shot down, and the rest of the Kaiser's family died in the wreckage, which fell right onto them. This telegram has just been a notice, to inform you all about the new leadership in Wirbel.

"From the Kaiserness' private stock. Fit for Her, fit for a King," He watched Vinchero read the troop report, "Our transports are almost loaded, we'll be off as soon as they are. Our ships will meet the fleet along the coast and I'll leave you for our own ships." He seated himself for some small talk with Vinchero which will be, undoubtedly, very riveting but should probably be skipped as it's only a minor detail now.

The women points down the road out of Vessels, saying "The Kaiserness' motorcade just passed here." As the messenger was able to catch a wagon heading that way that had just dropped off their load of timber. The road was bumpy and the bone chilling wind blew cold, whipping at the messengers clothes.

Awhile longer, and the wagon came up a large hill, with a perfect view of a valley. The messenger could easily see the Kaiserness' motorcade.

"Looks like the Kaiserness' motorkajigers is havin' trouble pushin' through the snow" The wagon driver idly stated.

They continued on down the hill a short ways, the messenger watching the motorcade slowly make progress through the snow covered road. What happened next, took him completely by surprise. He watched as the burning wagon hit the front car of the motorcade and the terrorists come over a hill, shooting at the defenseless cars. The messenger and wagon driver had front row seats to the attempt on the Kaiserness' life.

Before they could get close enough to help, the fight was over, and the Kaiserness had fled the seen as fast as she could with her guards. The truck of guards had remained to take the surviving terrorists into custody and secure the area for troops.

The ships of the formation strained for elevation. The very slight wind was in their favor, blowing towards the Inesean ships. Even a few hundred feet of elevation gain would provide the Gratian vessels with a considerable advantage, forcing the other airships to pass below and between them, exposed to the threat of their broadside howitzers and gatlings. The detachment was spread out in a serried line, each triad in its own triangular formation, Magnus-class vessels slightly ahead and above.

Bridge of the Sanctus Salvator

The engines labored heavily, bringing the Sanctus Salvator to combat elevation. Gun crews adjusted the muzzle angles of the howitzers on their tracked recoiless frames. The Inesean vessels were drawing slowly closer, becoming more distinct.
"Send them one last heliograph. If they don't break off, then prepare to engage them. We will pass through their midst. The Gratia Plena, Sancta Maria, and Dominus Omnipotentuswill continue on for a bombing run on the Xecuiian rear, while the rest of the fleet will turn about immediately and continue engagement. Signal for any other airships in the area to reinforce us." Quintus loosened the flap on his revolver's holster. So it would come to blood.

"This is a Dictatorial message to all rebelling areas of Khamul. We are sending forces into Voerdeland, partly due to your rebellion. We know of your hatred of the rebels, and we request that you will reabsorb yourself into the Benign Dictatorship, if we provide aid in Voerdeland."

"Very nice." Pavel said, looking at the message Milanvanzi had written. "How goes the battle in Brandburg?" Milanvanzi asked. "Our forces are just arriving. The rebels have rebuilt some of the town. We'd better move our asses and get in." Pavel said.
Brandburg, Voerdeland
"Son of a bitch!" Sergeant Modov dove behind a piece of rubble. Private Qian Ling-Ben was firing his rifle as fast as he could. "Qian, they've got a sniper up there!" Modov shouted. Qian spun around and fired, bring down a rebel sniper. "Nice shot." Modov said. Qian shrugged. "I could have gotten him right between the eyes." Qian said. "Yeah, don't show off man." Modov said. "They say they're airdropping in a machine gun." Modov commented. "Could one survive the drop?" Qian asked. An Ascendance Class Airship landed, and a group of men scurried out, assembling a lewis gun, then got back in the airship and pulled out. "Yep." Modov said, and ran over to the turret. He pulled the trigger, and no bullets flew. "Dammit! You got a chain on you?" Modov asked. "Yeah, don't you? They tell us to carry one around in case we come across a turret." Qian said. "I never heard that." Modov snapped. "I'm fucking with you man." Qian laughed. "We're screwed." Modov sighed. "Wait. This is a new model." Qian ran over to it. "I think it might take rifle clips." He inserted his mag. "Alright man. Fire!" Qian yelled. Modov had never used a machine gun before. He mowed down insurgents. "Shit out of ammo." He said pretty quickly. "Get behind cover again!" Qian yelled. An artillery shell almost killed the two of them. "Well buddy. Looks like this is the end." Modov said. The Voerdish Insurgency had taken control of most of the ruined city. "Let's go out swinging." Qian agreed. And they dove out from behind the rock and began firing.

Braystead, Voerdeland

The Xecuiian soldiers eventually had made most of their advance into at least the urban sections of the city while evading artillery fire for the most part, with the rear echolons of the east and west flanking units taking most of the casualties. In retaliation, the xecuiian command sent out messengers to artillery groups two miles from the command post (about one mile from Braystead), to begin a bombardment of the city. As the spearhead hadn't reached the inner urban areas, the artillerymen had no worries in bombarding the area. As the officers led their men to their positions, they held up their hands in wait while the troops loaded 200mm shells into the heavy assault guns. The guns were loaded and the shouts of "Hajime!" were heard before ear grinding *CRACK* and *TUUOM* were heard all around the batteries surrounding the city. The guns continued to fire as they were loaded, fired, cleaned, and the process going over and over again.

A forward observer riding upon a gun-tractor (in a manner of a Desant trooper) immediately fell back to the support lines to the command post. Rushing and shoving past officers, he reached the kommandants in charge of airwatch and hastily explained to them of an incoming bombardment to the rear support units by an approaching wave of aerocruisers. Stunned in the fact that a militia would possess such equipment, the officers decided to move their command post into a series of carrier-tractors so they could continue their objective while staying relatively safe for the time being. With such a threat, an order for the 60mm universal guns to be set up was delivered to the artillerymen who held said weapons. They had to move fast, while slow, the aerocrusiers could begin bombarding indiscriminately and rapidly at the ground even if they missed shots.

Before finally packing the last pieces of equipment were to be moved onto carrier-tractors, a telegraph message appeared explaining the arrival of allied Inesean support aerocrusiers. Elated at the news, the remaining officers and kommandants told the others that the would stand their ground and hold the stationary section of the (now divided) command post to continue receiving information of the Inesean reinforcements.

Inesean Central Command, Aerial Directorate, Supply Corp.
December 22nd

General-Quartermaster Bobby Qing smiled. The Voerdeland crisis was ever enlarging, now so to the point that the logistics were being brought before him. This meant that he had an excuse to test his pet project, the Otto Von Bismarck-class heavy aerial lifter (CX-1). Instead of the palsy 20 tons max capable of being carried by the CV-11 class supply ship, the CX-1 could lift 35 tons. It was 50% larger than the CV-11, but cost the same, since it was built by his own company, Inesean Airlift Inc., which was much more efficient than the State run factories. Currently he had only 5 CV-11s in Voerdeland and that needed to change. On hand, Qing had 75 spare CV-11s, and 5 CX-1s. These were part of the Reserve Air Corp, meaning that they were mostly leased to the individual States to aid in training the State’s Garda. However, they were still under his command, and were here because he felt their need was imminent.. He immediately typed up a telegram to be distributed to the three Wing commanders, and prepared a dispatch to be sent to his company’s production HQ in Ixtaccihuatl. More CX-1s were going to be needed if an Armored Division and Cyprum’s armies were to be supplied.
December 23rd
The 75 CV-11s and 5 CX-1s took off in waves of 20. They were met by 10 FTC-As, and 8 FTC-Bs over Tlaxacatl, and 2 D-19’s once they reached the border. They then proceeded straight to Onheath.

FASI Mandate of Onheath, Voerdeland
December 23rd, 4pm.

Starting from the preexisting Rail Junction in the center of the town, Inesean Army Corp of Engineers began to assemble the Rail Line that would eventually connect Onheath to Tlaxacatl. The project was to take about 10 months and would entail a 3 lane Rail line.

Over Braystead
December 23rd, 8:25

On board the Fortitude, Captain Chin stared sadly at the letter in his hands. Did the Gratians not see they were outnumbered 31 to 12? Were they suicidal? He wanted to give them the chance to see reason, to just look around and see the 24 Airships coming at them from their flanks, but the regulations and procedures were clear. A fight was upon them now. As if to support him, nature decided to smother the battlefield in a translucent fog. Barely able to see the enemy, Chin sent the order to all of the other vanguard ships. Within 10 seconds, all ships had assumed a V formation, and, already matching the Gratians in altitude change, charged forward, Quad-Vickers and 75mms blazing.

8:26, aboard United unto Dawn

Sky Marshal Chang ordered the main body of the fleet to turn about and arc into the Gratian fleet. They were a mile away when they saw the flashes.

Bridge of the Sanctus Salvator, Braystead, Voerdeland. 8:25

"Incoming!" The cadet officer's voice was cut short when a shard of glass from the shattered windscreen slashed across his throat. Quintus dropped to the ground as bullets and shrapnel pounded the aft bulkhead of the bridge. He crawled over to the wounded cadet who was clutching his throat, blood welling between his fingers. The wound was almost certainly fatal.
"Hold Course till my signal!" He roared at the helmsman, then turned back to the fallen man.
"Are you ready to receive the last rites?"
He nodded.
Quintus bowed his head and prayed, even as the machine gun below him opened up on the hostile ships with a steady thud-thud-thud and the wind ofthe world roared around him.
"Per sacrosáncta humánae reparatiónis mystéria remittat tibi omnipotens Deus omnes praeséntis et futúrae vitae paenas, Paradísi portas apériat, et ad gáudia sempitérna perdúcat.
Amen"
The cadet gasped and died, the dark trails of his lifeblood making the floor slick underfoot. Quitus slowly rose, leaning on the handrail. The Inesean ships were very close, pouring their fire on the gondolas and fighting decks of the Gratian ships. The Sanctus Salvator groaned as a shell smashed through the forward compartment of the gasbag.
"Hold course...hold course...execute maneuver 27,...Now!"
The Ineseans were good. But they were not Gratian airmen, and they were not flying Gratian ships. And this maneuver was something they had never dealt with before. The forward and aft props, mounted away from the body of the ship, tilted down at a sharp angle, the ailerons shrieking as they also folded downward, sacrificing speed for lift.
The entire Gratian line of battle literally floated over the Inesean wedge like a cloud of thistledown.
"Fire! Fire! Fire!"
All along the fighting decks the howitzers and Gatlings erupted into fire, pouring their deadly salvo into the exposed gasbags of the enemy ships.

Fort William,
Northern Valoria,
23rd December, 1890
07:10

Commander Joshua Bannam made his way to the bridge of his battlecruiser, the lead ship of its class, Intrepid. It was early morning and the view from the portholes he had passed on the way showed it to be typically grey outside, with low clouds, thin mist and slate grey, slightly choppy seas. The bridge was currently manned with a skeleton crew for the night, each of the bleary eyed men saluted as he went past, to which he responded similarly.

The ship, along with the rest of the combat fleet of the Expeditionary Force had exited the harbour of Fort William the day before and was currently anchored about a mile out. This was so that the Troop Transports would have ample space to load the men, horses, equipment, food and water necessary for the upcoming expedition. Even from this distance and with the light mist, Joshua could see the hustle and bustle of the organised chaos that was slowly turning the wheels of war on the piers.

“No messages for you sir,” His assistant had appeared at this right with a steaming mug of tea, which he now passed to his Commander. Joshua nodded his thanks, observing the positioning of the Ivy and its accompanying destroyers in the near distance.

The Fleet, along with the transports, was due to leave for the three day journey to the Former Voerdeland late this afternoon, with final clarification supposedly coming at three.

The Vjiayans were somewhat late to the party. Political indecision – or as Joshua saw it, inefficiency – had meant that many other nations’ had had the chance to impose some of their ideas on the Former Voerdeland already, and had weeks’ in terms of a head start. Some of these were friendly, of course, the commander in particular thinking of the forces of Vitzenburg and Inoroth in this light. Others were less so. The Xecuians seemed to want to prescribe their communist ‘cure’ to the problem in the area and were already engaged with the similarly deranged Inesians, the Fanaglians were somewhat of an enigma with regards their aims and the Mishmahigians could do what they want. Joshua couldn’t care less about those religious nut-jobs. Though as a Vjiayan he wasn’t exactly unique in that way of thinking.

He did have one worry, however. His Rules of Engagement were somewhat vague. Ships flying Vitzburgian or Inorothian colours were to be deemed as friendly, whilst Fanaglian colours were to be viewed with suspicion, and only shot at if fired upon first. Dalruanazkal ships or Wirbellian ships weren’t even mentioned.

********************

Hurry up and Wait.

Jim was pretty sure that every army in the world had a similar saying, but he was positive that it must typify the life of a Vjiayan soldier best. The past twenty-four hours had seen him transported for hours on the back of rattling, uncomfortable motor-vans with his bulky Bergen and inconvenient rifle. He had been told in some areas to get some sleep, as they wouldn’t be moving for a few hours, only to be prodded from his dozing ten minutes later and ordered to march, whilst in other areas he had been told to stand and stay alert to move in ten minutes and found himself waiting for hours.

His platoon had eventually linked up with the rest of the company though, and then with the battalion. Another long and frustrating train journey later had found them at Fort William, the biggest Naval base in Valoria and the most Northern of any Vjiayan military base.

The troops now there, some 12,000 all told, were now finding it was probably the coldest, too. They had been set up in platoons in large, beige tents, which offered minimal protection from the biting wind that had been gusting throughout the night, and the rain that had battered them was now in the process of freezing on the tents sagging roof.
Jimmy lay awake in his frigid sleeping sack, listening to the noise of the nearby loading of the ships. The whinnying of the tired and distracted horses was noisiest and the shouts of men and the clangs of equipment completed the cacophony. He had been ordered to report at nine to one of the sorting cabins found at the pier, where his platoon would be loaded onto one of the transports. The thing he found most surprising about the deployment was the high proportion of Valorian Regiments that were going to Voerdeland. He estimated by his earlier roaming amongst the tents that around seventy percent of the force were relatively newly trained Valorians with little to no frontline combat experience. The only reason he could think of for that was the relative ease with which such regiments could now be deployed to Northern Voerdeland, rather than having to assemble the force from Regiments across Vjiay.

Nevertheless, whilst he could hardly wait to experience ‘it’ for the first time, he was at the same time nervous of the odds currently set against him and his friends.

Braystead, 8:26

The Inesean vanguard was decimated. Of the 7 FTCs, only 4 were still afloat. And of those, only the Fortitude and Solar Dawn, who were at the rear of the V, were still firing.

Bridge of the Fortitude

Captain Chin grasped the helm. Below him lay the helmsman, dead from shrapnel. The Gratians had caught them of guard with their rapid ascension. They had annihilated the Solitude, Evening of Power, and Solace. The Freedom and Lunar Dusk were slowly spiraling downward towards Braystead. Now, with only the Solar Dawn to aid them, Chin ordered the Fortitude to execute Combat Maneuver 35. Designed to be used in emergencies only, Combat Maneuver 35 entailed dropping all of one’s ballast, and ascending to maximum altitude. At six evenly spaced points around the Fortitude, ballast tanks were dropped. The Fortitude rocketed upwards, straight towards a Gratian vessel.

Bridge of the I.A.W.S. United Unto Dawn

Chang stared, helpless, at the slaughter of the small Inesean vanguard by the Gratians. Three ships were already destroyed, consumed by the hydrogen-helium mix in their gasbags. Two others were spiraling uncontrollably. They were almost within firing range of the Gratians, just 30 more seconds. “All ships, prepare to fire on my mark” he said to Comms, who relayed the message. Closer, just a little closer. The flashes and ships grew bigger and brighter, more visible through the smog. The main body of the Ineseans was a little overhead of the Gratians when the order to fire came. All along the line, 75mm recoilless rifles and Quad-Vickers opened fire.

Voerdeland, Braystead
December 23rd 8:25-8:30 AM

From the point to which the Inesean reinforcements arrived to assist the Xecuiian push, the anti aircraft batteries began to fire as quickly as the artillerymen could load and fire them. The 60mm gun was versatile for various universal roles as according to Xecuiian military doctrine, to which it's anti-aircraft capabilities were invaluable for the situation. Normally, the gun would be used in a rapid building assault role with it often having fire shrapnel rounds into buildings to clear out infantry. In this event, the guns were loaded with armor piercing and high explosive air burst shells in which the armor piercing shots were directed towards the crew and weapon compartments as to keep them from continuing to cause damage. The high explosive air bursts shells were launched from other 60mm emplacements as to burst holes (from shrapnel) into the envelope and disorient movement with the high explosive force.

The batteries continued to fire as the Aerocrusiers began to try elevating higher; while Inesean forces continued to do the same albeit, taking losses among comrades. Xecuiian soldiers witnessing the fallen allied Aerocrusiers moved as rapidly as they could to retrieve downed crewman, desperately maneuvering their gun-tractors and carrier-tractors to escape the hail of enemy fire in the process.

47 kilometers from Medale, Voerdeland
Xecuiian Military encampment
December 23rd 8:00 AM

Underneath a quickly built/makeshift bomb shelter, various officers and kommandants within discuss the movement to which their 80,000 strong military front would take.
As one of the officers points towards his pencil markings on a map indicating the current attack plans on Medale, another begins to grab his arm, and calmly moves it towards Braystead. Stunned, the officer questions his decision to have the men move away from Medale and prompts the others to do the same. In response, the officer walks towards a box filled to the brim with reports on already known enemy and allied positions. He pours the contents of box onto the floor and begins searching for certain documents within the mixture of fresh reports, somewhat recent information, and slightly passed notifications. As he searches through, he manages to find a few which he promptly hands over to his comrades, to which they set them in a much smaller and neater pile on the table with the map. Finished with his search for the articles he wanted, the officer stands back up and non-nonchalantly moves towards the table while making odd leg movements from stepping around the mess he had made. At the table, the officers already began to re-arrange the articles by date and straightened crumpled papers just as the officer reached the table and stared at the papers. With a smirk to indicate his gratitude towards the date arrangement of the reports, he begins to talk about how in the reports, certain Xecuiian movements caused enemy forces to move in ways as to leave them in positions which could be easily compromised. He continues to explain that despite these areas of quick victory, soldiers are not engaging in said locations, causing enemy units to retreat rather than become stuck and forced to capitulate. As he continues on for the next half hour or so, the officers begin to agree with his motives to which it would be better to move the 2nd Xecuiian Liberation Front towards the city of Braystead rather than Medale. Having come to a unanimous agreement, the officers start to pack up and return to the field camp above where they would order the front to begin marching towards Braystead.

Outskirts of Angelhurst, the Republic of Nova Voerda
21 December, 1890
1000 Local Time

Subcommander Lanigan peered closely at the man before him, as he strode forward, his hand extended for an amicable handshake. "Greetings, Captain Mironov, and I accept your offer of coffee most gratefully. As beautiful as your country is, it is also most deadly, especially to those of us who are not used to it," he said, chuckling slightly.

"Unfortunately," he continued, releasing the captain's hand, "my orders expressely forbid me from delivering or revealing the contents of Archpriest Meza's message in any way. I am only allowed," he said, pointing at the church behind the captain, "to discuss it with President Wayford and the representative of the Old State."

He stood back slightly, unconsciously straightening as he regarded the assembled Republican troops. "Will you, Captain Mironov, allow me safe passage to the meeting, or must Archpriest Meza come to Angelhurst himself to deliver it?" he said, his eyes narrowing at the implied rebuke. "My troops may remain outside the village, or they can join you in guarding the city. Whichever you prefer," he shrugged. "The only thing that matters is getting this message to the meeting."

Sanctus Salvator, Braystead, Voerdeland, 8:26 AM

"Multiple incoming!"
The Sanctus Salvator strained for elevation as the Inesean line of battle came on. Their main line of battle. Quintus slammed his fist onto the console as if to push the battered airship higher. They would be fortunate to come at all level with the Ineseans

"Signal the fleet: execute maneuver Forty Five! Split the line and show them our broadsides!"

All along the line, the Gratian ships, which had been fleeing the Inesean main body, suddenly turned ninety degrees almost within their own length, the props swiveling outward this time, rapidly bringing the Magnus-class vessels' howitzers and the Vastator class vessels' gatlings to bear on broadside. The vessels to the right of the Sanctus Salvator turned one direction, while the Salvator herself turned the other, firing their broadsides into the teeth of the oncoming Ineseans, eschewing the crew compartments in favor of the gasbags, which made much better targets, anyway. The fighting decks were a bedlam of frenzied activity, crew slamming fresh cartridges in as quickly as they could be fired, the smoking hot muzzles of the machine guns searing the night with their spitting hatred.

But there were so damned many of them. Quintus winced as the ship in front of the Salvator, the Trinitas, erupted in flames and went down, the victim of anti-aircraft fire and the guns of the Inesean battle line.

But the fact that the Xecuiians were able to bring their anti-aircraft guns to bear meant that they were directly over the artillery emplacements...

"Release payloads as you come to bear on the Xecuiian artillery! Controlled drops!"

In the belly of the fighting deck, ordinance specialists carefully sighted through the crude bombing scopes, calculating for speed and probable trajectory. Hands gloved against the biting morning chill pulled the levers, and the doors dropped open, releasing the heavy incendiary bombs into the midst of the swarming Xecuiian military machine.

Chambers of the Magister of the Eye, Mariana, Gratia Infinita, 21 December 1890

Magister Marcus relaxed behind the imposing desk, his fingers steepled, eyes closed. To an outside observer, the small, bland man, looking mildly out of place in the robes of his office, might appear vulnerable. The appearance was deceptive. Marcus’s body was fit and hard, conditioned not for war, but for the brief, desperate actions that a man of intrigues was likely to encounter. The revolver and knives concealed on his person would also quickly disabuse any would-be assassin of any impression of vulnerability.
After a lengthy period of silence, Marcus moved, pulling out pen and paper. A smile crossed his lips. He had managed to slip in a few agents before the Servothians were able to close down the occupied region. Marcus had friends in many places, and servants in more.
“I think it is high time our friends in Servoth learned what it means to occupy a sovereign country. Blood begets blood.”

Luxburg, Voerdeland. Occupied Zone. Weaver’s Corner. 23 December

The row of perfectly anonymous, semi-respectable townhomes had been spared the rioting and disturbances that had consumed Luxburg. The residents were a tight, close-lipped stalwart lot that looked out for each other, and spared nary a tear for the rest of the town. Or for the world.

Which made it a perfect place for Jeorge Nearell. No curious neighbors bothered to inquire as to the clackings that occasionally emanated though the walls of the joined basements. They would have presumed he was a bootlegger anyway, based on the company he kept and the plenitude of bottles that cluttered his quarters. But the bearded, filthy men who drifted in and out of the complex were considerably more intelligent and fit than their appearances gave out. They were in fact, the leadership of one of the Voerdish resistance cells that had been slowly coalescing since Servoth had occupied the city, cheered on mostly by the illiterate masses too unintelligent...or too hungry and afraid, to care what it was they were doing. But the better citizens of Luxburg, from the stolid factory workers to the bankers and merchants, knew what it mean. They would no longer be Voerdes. They would become Servothian.

Jeorge’s basement held a printing press. It was not a newer model, or the most precise. The quality of paper was not good. But it would suffice for this, the opening move in the fight for freedom. By tomorrow morning, thousands of printed leaflets would be quietly distributed across the city and discretely posted.

People of Luxburg! Voerdes! Freemen! Brothers!

How quickly you abandon the sacred traditions of your forefathers! How easily you surrender your freedoms beneath the velveted heel of tyranny! How readily do you forget the republic in which you were born!

The Servothians are not your friends. They never were. They bring hospitals, yes, but they also bring armies. Not to keep the peace, but to retain this city as a possession. As a part of their empire. For that is what you are to them, what all the people of Voerdeland are to them. Things. Subjects. Not citizens, but fodder for their dreams of glory. Bodies to be thrown into war or into labor.

Make no mistake friends: ‘Autocrat’ Jekyls and his Servothian masters are not your friends. They are human wolves, for all their fine speech and fine clothing. They preach of peace and of tranquility...but the only peace they have brought is a peace bought and maintained by the sword.

Rise! By the blood of your fathers! Rise, by the blood of Christ himself! Stand for your traditions and the sacred honor of your beleaguered country. And know you do not stand alone. Read the words of the Provisional Government, calling for ceasefire and accord:The Voerdeland Provisional Republic,
In Full Congress of Parliament, December 20, 1890 AD

Whereas, The Federal Empire of Servoth has raised rebellion in the Free Lands of Voerdeland, inciting the people to acts of violence against one another and against their duly elected governors, causing untold deaths, injuries, losses, and damages in and to the Free State,

Whereas the selfsame Empire has occupied the city of Luxburg, perverting the minds and will of the populace, murdering Voerdish soldiers in the execution of their duties to protect their country, and imposing their laws and customs on a people not their own,

Therefore, the Provisional Republic demands the immediate withdrawal of Servothian operatives, soldiers, merchants, and agitators from all the lands of the Voerdish Free State. If this demand is not met within eight days, this selfsame resolution shall henceforth serve as an official declaration of war against the Empire, and all Servothian troops within the borders of the Free State shall be terminated with extreme prejudice and without quarter.

The Provisonal Government calls upon the 'Republic of Nova Voerda' and all freedom loving patriots to join them in this stand. United we shall prevail, divided we shall fall into an endless night of tyranny.

The war between brothers is over, and our countrymen would stand united with us against the foe of our liberties!

Braystead, 8:26AM
The Fortitude was saved by the Gratians own tactical maneuvers. When they moved to Broadside the on-coming Ineseans, the Fortitude rose parallel, next to a cruiser. And on the the side facing away from the battle line. This allowed the Fortitude to fire multiple broadsides into the vessel.

Braystead, Same time

"Execute Maneuver 11!" ordered Chang. A broadside hit the I.A.W.S. United Unto Dawn. "Do it now!" screamed Chang over the keen of the engines. The Inesean battle line split into 4 lines, aimed at evenly spaced points along the Gratian line. Accelerating forward, going at full power, the 4 lines of ships angled slightly downward, in order to present all of their guns. The first ships of each line bore the brunt of the Gratian fire, allowing the rest of the line to cruise through, pouring fire into the command gondolas of the Gratian ships, as previous volleys had shown that the compartmentalized cruisers of theirs resisted gasbags damage rather well. And since the Gratians were facing Broadside out, they had few guns to bear.

Xecuiian Supply Convoy, 10 miles from Braystead. 8:26AM

Originally meant to head straight to Onheath, the convoy had split between Braystead and Onheath. The troops and majority of the supply ships had headed on to Onheath, while the remaining 15 CV-11s and 2 CX-1s sped towards the Xecuiian command post. The 18 FTCs and 2 D-19s hurried towards the battle field, eager to aid their comrades.

near the Xecuiian Command Post around 8:25
The two supply ships set down in an open, friendly field. There the crews were unloaded their ammo and food stuffs and waited for the Xecuiians to come get em.

As Vinchero and the Colonel sat talking, a red-faced communication's officer rushed in, gave a salute, and handed a mailed folder to the King. Vinchero excused himself as he took the folder contained within. It was dated three days ago, direct from the Rothian Intelligence Ministry (RIM), 'Highest Security'. It had been sent to arrive around the same time the fleet did. Opening the message, Vinchero read it once silently, and again out loud for the Colonel's ears:

In Full Congress of Parliament, December 20, 1890 AD

Whereas, The Federal Empire of Servoth has raised rebellion in the Free Lands of Voerdeland, inciting the people to acts of violence against one another and against their duly elected governors, causing untold deaths, injuries, losses, and damages in and to the Free State,

"Well Colonel, it would seem one of our main war aims has already been accomplished without any effort on our part - the Voerds have settled peace, at least for a while. We must now see to it that they are allowed to hold those elections before the others gobble up everything that is left!

Now, as we are to be working together, shall we begin putting together our joint order of battle?"

Both the Courier and the wagon driver were stunned. As they drove up, a Vitzenburg Guard halted them and demanded to know their business. When the Courier told them he had a package for the Kaieress, he looked at him incredulously. Showing him the wrapped object for closer inspection, as well as his official papers as an Inorothian Citizen on Official Business for the Crown, the guard softened a little:

"Well, we can escort you to the palace, but your package will need to be inspected before you may present it to Kaiseress Morgen. As you can see here, we can't be too careful anymore when it comes to her safety"

So the Courier was placed under guard and brought to Vitzburg at once.

Pavlostan, Khamul
"The Khamul Rebellion has agreed to disband due to our attacks on rebel strongholds in Voerdeland." General Peng informed Pavel. "Good. What are our current holdings in Voerdeland?" He asked. Peng pulled out a map.

"That''s it?" Pavel asked skeptically. "There's been heavy fighting in our territory" Peng told Pavel. "What is the status of Brandburg?" Pavel asked. "The third infantry regiment pulled back this morning after a particularly devastating insurgent attack."General Peng, I want your legion to enter our territory in Voerdeland. I'm promoting you to Marshal. Not one step back"

Lux, the Servothian-Voerdish Protectorate, Former Voerdeland
December 24th, 1890
7:41 Eastern Time

A Servothian soldier stood on the street corner, his guard shift had just begun, his name.... Louis. It was cold out in the open air, it was the day just before Christmas, and truth be told he would rather not be there. But it was his duty, so Louis would do it, but then the wind began to blow. And with the wind came a badly made peice of paper, a leaflet, got caught and wrapped itself around the soldiers leg.

Lois plucked the paper from his leg and he read it, eight times, and each time he was still surprised. The Voerdish were planning a rebellion, again! And against the State too! The Bürgermeister had to be warned of this, and so through an ever complex series of checks and pass overs, the leaflet finally made it's way to Jekyl.

4 hours later.....

Jekyl had ordered that a large group of the people of Lux to be gathered infront of the city's capitol building for the latest of his speeches. It would be different from his earlier speaks, it had to be if he was going to convince the good people of continuing the Servothian occupation.

"The people of Lux........

I know some of you, well many of you, do not like the rule of the Servothian Government over your city. It is understandable, we came here, told you what to do, we invaded your home city, and it may seem that we are trying to enforce our culture upon you. Many of you think that we will enslave you, but that is not the truth here. Many of you think we will rule you with an iron fist of doom and pain, but that is not the truth here, true I am technically a dictator here in this city. But in 10 years time you may decide your own leaders. In 10 years you may write your own constitution, you may decide your way of governance, you may decide your own local laws, but you will not lose the protection you are receiving now, the State will always give that to you.

Some of you beleive that the State's soldiers will stay here in this sweet, kind city forever to only oppress you; but when the former Voerdeland area completely stabilizes, they will leave, and if the peace talks continue as they are now, those soldiers will leave quickly and soon. Do not fear for your future, for I and my men, will not be in it much longer. I plead to you, all of you, rich or poor, working man or not, man or women, do not raise unnecessary rebellion. We are just beginning the reconstruction process, and if we leave now, all our work and progress made here will be taken with us. Do not listen to men of spite and hate towards me, for I am not meant to be here in control of you for long, that is your occupation, not mine. In time you may take charge, but just remember that the Servothian flag will always fly to help you along the way.

Thank you."
How did I get this gay?
