World of Tanks, of all things.

Playing it alongside two of my housemates, battling the world :P

Ha, I've seen banner ads for that on NS. I take it that it's pretty good?

The banner ads looked terrible. I was put off by that until I tried it, on the recommendation of one of my housemates.

The game itself, however, is very good. I'm currently tooling around the place in a Jagdpanzer 38(t) (otherwise known as the Hetzer), tricked out with camo netting, anti-spall liner and, of all things, an autoloader (!).

Hidey-hidey, shooty-shooty.

The game goes in to some of the insane tanks of late-war/prototypes and the random battle feature seems to need a bit more balancing. I've ended up having to face down a Panzerkampfwagen IX Lowe in my little Hetzer, weeping to myself as I desperately try to at least bugger up its treads. Which is a bit shit. There tends to be far too many of the heavies/super-heavies in games, such as the bigger end of the IS series, some of the odder American prototypes and the batshit insane German drawing-board denizens. Like the Maus. The result can often be a very short game, especially as I've not levelled up enough to get any of the big shit, although I don't really like those things.

It has a nice balance of realism vs. playability. It's no simulator, which is nice. Different parts of the tanks can get damaged, ammo lost, engines borked, turrets jammed. There's a nice selection of vehicles - heavy tanks, mediums, lights, self-propelled artillery and tank hunters. Also, the fact that it includes some of the odder stuff fulfils a bit of the war-nerd side of me. I like obscure weaponry :P

One thing I do miss is British tanks.

At the moment, the game only has American, USSR and German kit, but they plan on adding French, British and Italian. There are some captured French tanks on the German list, such as the Hotchkiss, Somua and Char B1. The Soviets get a lend-lease Matilda with a 76.2mm gun instead of the 2pdr, which wouldn't be worth a damn, and a Churchill MkIII.

I really, really want to tool about in a Sherman V. Admittedly, that is an American tank, but I really like the British Shermans. There's something underdog-y about them. That, and the Sherman advance scene in the film A Bridge Too Far, which is awesome.

Man, they ought to pay me for this shit :P

Most honored leaders,
It is my painful duty to announce to the league that the empire of Finium must withdraw. By imperial mandate the borders of Finium are closing and contact with other nations will be almost completely severed. The emperor, though sorry to do so, believes this it is a nessasary step in a growing empire to take a respite from the turmoil of the world. The emperor has not shared with the me the time in which the empire shall return, but I believe it to be soon.

may God watch over you and keep you
May he bless and protect you,

Argos Hartcore,
Commanding General
The Territories of the Imperium of Finium

EDIT: I'm taking a break from NS, so I thought isolationism would be a good excuse

To: Argos Hartcore, Commanding General of the Territories of the Imperial of Finium
From: the Imperial Government of the Greater Holy Empire
Re: Your recent decision

Honoured friend,

It is always an occasion for a pause for thought when an ally decides it must withdraw from the League of Imperial Nations. We respect your decision, however, as your government believes that it is acting within the national interest of the people and nation of Finium. This is a laudable act, one which will hopefully benefit

It can, however, be commented that an isolationist policy could leave your great nation as a backwater, something that the League does not wish to see happen to one of its former allies. The Imperial Government, at least, would like to maintain the hand of friendship with the Imperium of Finium, even in these times of revised foreign politics. We offer to keep open trade links with Finium, as well as keep an embassy for your nation open within our capital.

We believe that this can only do well for both your nation and your people. Of course, this decision can only be taken by yourselves and the Imperial Government will not try to interfere if you decide to decline our offer.

Justin Traskalissaeos,

Minister of Alliance Affairs,

The Imperial Government

Okay, not sure how to put this. Since I can't really get the effort to RP, and the only one I'm posting in is from a sense of obligation to a friend, I should tell you all I can no longer post in P/MT, sadly including the Tagmatika Conference. Because of this, can I please be listed as 'inactive' since I don't know when I'll be coming back again.

I'll still be on the chat if anyone wants to talk though.

With respect and bromanship,

Viridia.

On to current affairs, with our man Vetok LOA, we have a judicial spot, a council admin spot, and an Occupied For The Greater Good spot available.

Also, we have a nation needing voting in the security council area.

Council members, thoughts on replacements for the advisory council vaccancies. Also if any current league member is interested in one of the spots now open, please let us know, either in this thread or on the OF.

The Káns Imperium is interest in replacing, predecessor Vetok, in its position of 'Occupied for the Greater Good'. The Imperium finds that it's elements serves the criteria well and is willing to volunteer for the 'Greater Good' position.

Addressed To: The League of Imperial Nations
Subject: The Declaration of War Proper

In response to the declaration of hostilies as evident by actions upon Karthay, The Rhydin War Council (RWC) in response invokes the blood oath that shall we will never surrender, we shall never tire, and by that we declare our statement to the whole of the League.

The major problem confronting the free peoples everywhere in the last half of the 20th century is the threat to peace and freedom presented by the militant aggressiveness of international imperialism. A major weakness in this struggle is lack of adequate understanding of the character of the challenge which imperialism presents under the guise of organizations in likeness to the League itself.

I am convinced that we are on the right side in this struggle and that we are well ahead now in its major aspects. But if we are to maintain our advantage and assure victory in the struggle, we must stamp out this serpent before it grows further.

Few can still believe that Imperialism is simply a curious and twisted philosophy which happens to appeal to a certain number of zealots but which constitutes no serious threat to the interests or ideals of free society. The actions of Karthay certainly put this into doubt as the League's imperialist zealots are even now in battle against we of the people.

The days of indifference are gone. The danger today in our attitude toward the League is of a very different kind. We see the obvious dangers. There is no question that the free people of Rhydin generally will support whatever programs our leaders initiate in these fields to counter the machinations of the League and it's grasping talons.

What we must realize is that this struggle probably will not be decided in the military, economic, or scientific areas, important as these are. The battle in which we are engaged is primarily one of ideas. The test is one not so much of arms but of faith.

If we are to win a contest of ideas we must know their ideas as well as our own. Our knowledge must not be superficial. We cannot be content with simply an intuition that imperialism is wrong. It is not enough to rest our case alone on the assertions, true as they are, that the league enslaves people, perverts order and destroys justice.

We must recognize that the appeal of the League and it's idea of Imperialism is not to the masses, as theywould have us believe, but more often to an intelligent minority in newly developing countries who are trying to decide which system offers the best and surest road to progress.

We must cut through the exterior to the very heart of the League. We must come to understand the weaknesses of this Imperialistic front as a system of aspirations, why it has failed in its promise of equality in abundance, why it has produced a whole library of disillusionment and a steady stream of men, women, and children seeking to escape its blight.

But we must also come to understand its strength - why it has so securely entrenched itself in the vast realm of nations before us, why it has been able to accomplish what it has in the field of education and science, why in some of the problem areas of the world it continues to appeal to leaders aspiring to a better life for their people?

If the free world is to win this struggle, we must have men and women who not only are against the vileness of the League itself but who know why they are against it and who know what they are going to do about it. Imperialism that the League promotes is a false idea, and the answer to a false idea is truth, not ignorance.

Our truth shall be the blade of righteousness and it shall cleave away this darkness that threatens us so.
