Fourteen Senators Leave the Conservative Party
Today, at least fourteen senators have declared their intention to leave the in-government Conservative Party. The large departure appears not to be a wholly planned among all fourteen leaving members, with eleven holding a joint press conference before the Senate met this morning; two others announcing just after noon; and a final member announcing their intention to sit as an independent member of the Senate until their retirement. All departing members claimed the recent actions of Consul Pompilius played a part in their decision to leave.
The most high profile member to leave was Leon Dalassenos, who also stepped down from his post as Century Tribune; he stated he would continue to keep his seat on the Century Assembly and had no intention of stepping down. “Consul Pompilius no longer represents my views and those of my constituents,” Dalassenos told the press, in a joint press conference with fellow Greek senator Nikeforos Kalekas. Together the two announced they had plans to join the Greek National Party, though admitted that no such discussion had taken place on their membership with party leader Anna Kinnamos.
The largest bloc of Conservative defectors came in the earliest announcement before the Senate met this morning. The group of eleven, led by freshman senator John Castriciu, were joined by Popular Social Party leader Michael Oppius. Senator Castriciu, who represents Ratiara constituency, laying all blame on his decision on Consul Pompilus, calling Pompilius a “moderate…not a true conservative” and “a man that continues to spit on the hard work and progress made during the ill fated Vindóbona consulship.” PSP leader Oppius welcomed Castriciu and the other ten former Conservative senators to his party, doubling the party’s representation in the Senate overnight to twenty-two seats.
The bleeding did not end there for the Conservatives, as long time Senator Theophanes Lafrenia announced at the end of the day his desire to leave the party and sit as an independent. Lafrenia stated that he still desired to have a working relationship with the Conservatives, but largely “feels like it is not the party [he] joined.” He expressed his desire to caucus with the party, and expects little to change in his day-to-day involvement; this will be his last term in the Senate.
We contacted Consul Pompilius’ office, but they offered no comment. As it stands, the Conservative Party still continues to hold an absolute majority of seats in the Senate, at 342 seats, which is six seats above the threshold for a majority.
