Ishmael cursed his vile luck under his breath softly as he and the rest of the 7th crept carefully through a stand of trees in the small woodland area south of the large French city. When the Roh-Amir had called for volunteers to scout the city ahead of the main Ottoman invasion force his own lieutenant had been enough of a blockhead to offer Ishmael's squad as one of the reconnaissance elements of the Caliph's glorious armies' advance. The damn fool had thought the Roh-Amir was asking for units to hold Toulon and keep the Ottoman's supply lines open; shows what you got when you didn't pay attention during Roh briefings.

"Restuf, field glasses." whispered the dolt of an officer from just in front of Ishmael, and one of the newer armsmen passed him up the spyglass. He peered through it for a moment, then lowered the oracular device. "Well, looks like it'll be an interesting kettle of fish taking that town for sure men." The young would-be strategist nodded. "Cannon. Lots of cannon."

Word was taken back to the main host of the state of the city's defences, and soon the half of the Arazif that had been landed was massed just beyond the farthest cannon shot from the city boundaries. Doubtless the approach of 40,000 Ottoman troops had not gone unnoticed, but the Emir decided to be humane. A single rider atop a horse advanced on the city under a flag of parley, then spoke to some French troops that were standing there. He spoke in English, the language of international discourse.

"His Excellency the Emir Aram Sultun ibn Mazad ul-Amaka wishes to prevent the loss of life of the people of this great city, for such is his beneficent spirit and his desire to not spill blood over the quarrel of his Master and the French government. To this end His Excellency asks for the surrender of your city, and guarantees the safety of all the inhabitants of the city of Marseille and its environs, and the troops of the French government that defend it, from all harm or maltreatment. The troops will be deprived of their arms and interned as prisoners of war in suitable habitations until the satisfactory conclusion of the state of hostilities between the government of his eternal Majesty the Caliph and the French state, and the civilian populace of Marseille left untouched. If you wish to acquiescence to His Excellency's terms all French colors within the city must be replaced with a flag of truce by this time tomorrow, and all arms of the French garrison laid in the central square."

He finished his speech and turned his horse, riding back to the main host.

Henry Geraldson was scared, what if the Ottomans shot him on his approach? Though, he had to listen to the orders given to him. He was to go to the Ottoman's nearest defensive point, he was unarmed and to be only carrying a Swedish flag and a message from the Swedish king with him, that was all. The message wasn't in writing, no, the king was too busy for that, Geraldson had to memorize it, to be repeated to whoever was in command of the Ottomans in Southern Poland.

The soldier reigned his horse in mid-stride as one of the French soldiers answered him. A curious person to negotiate with him, but such as apparently how it was going to be. With a quick twitch of his hips Merketal turned the horse and rode up to the soldier who had spoken.

He responded, his voice carrying the melodic tones of a trained singer. "The Emir will not allow French troops to remain in this city under arms. Your fellows will either surrender their weapons and themselves as captives, or be responsible for the suffering of the inhabitants as they are driven from the city by the force of Ottoman arms. These are my Master's terms."

Negotiations were finished. Merketal turned back towards the Arazif's lines and spurred his horse. Swiftly he was out of cannon range of the city.

Oltszyn, Polska Province, Ottoman Empire
Abdul ibn Kelmat, 78th Squad, 37th Roh, 11th Arazif

He walked idly along the ramparts of the Polska Norta, occasionally scanning the plain towards the sea to keep an eye on the Swedish lines and make sure they didn't try any funny business. Abdul had to switch off guard duty every so often with his squadmates, and his was shift was almost over. Just then he picked out a man coming from the Swedish lines towards the Ottoman fortifications. For a moment he closed his eyes and sent a swift prayer to Allah that it wasn't true, but when he opened them he espied the man again. Curses. Now he would have to take the crazy Northlander to someone important, all on his watch. Damnably inconvenient timing on the part of the Swedes, all told.

The stranger was challenged, searched for weapons, and then taken to the Roh-Amir's meeting chamber inside the main fortress of the Norta line.

Marcus Illius looked up from his papers at the Swede in his strange uniform, and put aside the requisition orders he had just been going over. He smiled cordially. "So, Swede, what brings you to frequent the lands of the Ottoman Empire? Assuredly your presence here is not accidental; such a coincidence belies belief."

The Swedish man didn't smile, he really had no need to, he felt very out of place among all the Ottomans. Though, he was sent for a secret reason, that the French must not find out about. So, he answered the Ottoman man, "Yes, I have a purpose for being here, but it is very secretive as of why, the French do not know about my presence here. Not many know I'm here, and even fewer know why. So far, only the king of Sweden, and I, Henry Geraldson, know what I need to tell you, and it would be best for as few ears as possible here to hear it. Before I can tell you, I must ask that the Ottomans do not let this information be known to the French."

Marcus Illius, 11th Arazif

The Emir frowned at the man's words, then motioned to the functionaries around the command center. With haste all the personnel packed up and left, but two of Marcus' personal bondsmen-guards remained. He nodded to the Swede. "Very well then, you may speak freely, and I shall most assuredly see to it that what you say does not reach the French, my realm's current foes."

"Thank you, Sir. My king fears that the French will not triumph against the Ottomans, Sir." started Geraldson, "He also fears that if the French fall, then Sweden will be next, as being seen as an ally of the French. My king wishes not to get involved in a war with the Ottomans right now. Though, my king is mainly worried about the lands that France and Sweden share. The lands of Denmark and Iceland. My king doubts that the French will win in a war against the Ottomans, and he is not going to send Swedish men to die for the defense of a doomed France. He wants to know, that if France is conquered by the powerful Ottomans, then Sweden would receive French-controlled land in Iceland and Denmark, since Sweden already controls half of those nations anyway?"

Qaqortoq, Greenland
General Andersson's fleet landed here, and she led her 60,000 troops straight into Qaqortoq, which had no Greens protecting it. They quickly took the place, with no resistance, and raised the Swedish flag. The first ground on Greenland to be conquered by Sweden.

General Andersson ordered that they set up defensive positions around Qaqortoq, they don't want to lose it as soon as they take it.


Kulusuk, Greenland
General Yvette's fleet landed on the shore with no problems, and she got her 60,000 troops near Kulusuk pretty quickly. Just outside the town, she stopped the advance, she spotted a soldier, that clearly must be fighting for whatever Greenland called their army.

The Greens did not expect such a large force to land here, as they only had 6,000 troops stationed in Kulusuk. General Yvette, however, did not know this was the case, she suspects a large defensive force.

General Yvette made her decision, she told 20,000 of her troops to enter the city from the side they were on, she'd lead the other 40,000 Swedes around to the other side. The force of 20,000 Swedes entered the city and killed any soldiers on sight. The Greens started to retreat, and by the time they began to exit the city, Yvette and her forces were waiting.

At the end of the day, the Greens had lost 5,500 troops at Kulusuk. The other 500 were taken prisoner.

General Yvette ordered that the city be searched in the case that there were anymore soldiers hiding out.

Motzfeldt So, Greenland
General Andersson's force of 60,000 continued north into Motzfeldt So, where the residents had heard of the Swedish attack. The residents did not want harm to their city, so they ordered all the troops defending it to head north to defend the capital. So, General Andersson easily took the city of Motzfeldt So. Since, there was no enemy forces there, she did not burn any buildings in the city. Her next target was the capital, Nuuk. A resident of Motzfeldt So had told her that there was only 4,000 troops defending the capital, the tribes that reside in Greenland did not have a large defensive force.

Ammasalik, Greenland
Soon after General Yvette took Kusuluk, a resident told her that the nearby town-tribe of the Ammasalik was a war tribe. They had 10,000 troops, the largest force in all of Greenland. She was ready to attack though, she knew she could defeat them easily. First, the Swedish ships bombarded the town, and she watched as the town burned. Then, when the last of the flames died out, and half the city was burned to ash, she attacked. Her force of 60,000 Swedes easily overtook the town. Now that these two places were taken, all she was to do was set up Swedish ports for trade, and for ships to resupply for Sweden to expand even more.

The time for the French surrender was fast approaching, at least according to the one man with the watch in the squad, and to Ishmael's keen eyes there was no sign of a white flag anywhere in the great city sprawling before him. French colors in fact hung resplendent over the town, and the defenders seemed to have to intent of giving up. More the poorer for them and him, in Ishmael's opinion.

As the sun was at the point in the sky of the proclamation great Ottoman bombards spoke behind the massed infantry, throwing tremendous stone balls higher and farther than any artillery in the city beyond could hope to, their messages of death crashing down into the city in the distance. Ishmael and the rest of the 7th climbed out of their trenches and trotted forward a short distance, then pulled out spades and dug like moles. Large quantities of true cannons advanced along with the men of the 40th towards Marseille, and began setting up to crush the city's defenses in earnest while the 40th Roh set up defenses around them and the 17th and 4th advanced towards the city in glittering lines.

Sixteen thousand Ottoman soldiers marched forward, closing distance with the city.

Marwan Ahida, 63rd Squad, 72nd Roh, 6th Arazif

The whistle of shells overhead momentarily made Marwan duck as the artillery of the 72nd flung death at the men of Naples who had foolishly decided to attack the troops of the Ottoman Empire. "Up at the rung!" cried his squadleader, and Marwan and the troops in the 63rd scrabbled up to the firing step. The field ahead of them filled with the troops of Naples, and he gulped momentarily. There were so many of them... more than the 72nd, which was tasked with defending Cannes, assuredly. "Presnet- arms!" yelled the brute of a man, pulling down his own musket to face the oncoming horde. Marwan pulled up his Tasaf too, and aimed the flintlock at the foes of his Caliph. It was a long shot, and his gun laughed at accuracy, but with such a densely packed target it was nearly impossible to miss. "Give- FIRE!" The command rang through Marwan's body, and his finger squeezed on the trigger as he had been trained.

Gunsmoke rose from the Ottoman lines en masse, spitting minnie balls towards the attacking Naples forces. Some men crumpled in the fortifications as stray shots from the enemy caught them, but not in large numbers. The weapons of the era favored defense over assault, and only with vast numerical superiority could one hope to triumph in a headlong attack. Cannons boomed in the rear of the fortifications, in the town of Cannes itself, and Marwan was glad; every soldier those iron balls killed was one less that would be busy trying to kill him.

Marcus considered the Swedish troopers words for a moment, then spoke tenatively. "I do not make policy on these matters son. However, I can tell you that, at least in my opinion, the Caliph has no desire to hold lands so far from the Empire. This Iceland of which you speak sounds very inhospitable to me- I know not what my Master would wish with it. Denmark I have heard of, but only as a rumor. I would not want such a land if I were the commander of my Lord's forces, that is for sure."

26,000 troops from Naples reached Marseilles, and started to pound the Ottomans with artillery and fire mercilessly at the Ottoman troops.

Nuuk, Greenland
The Swedish fleet had moved northward along the western shore of Greenland while General Andersson moved northward by land. The fleet bombarded the outer areas of Nuuk, and when they finished, General Andersson stormed in. First, the Swedes entired and shot anybody they saw move, citizens, children, and soldiers. Then, about halfway through the town, they only shot troops. By the time they completely swept through Nuuk, they were taking prisoners. What mattered most? Greenland now belongs to Sweden. The king would be happy.

At the end of the day, the causualties were large:

Suddenly cannon balls plowed into their ranks, dismembering many troops and breaking their neat lines. "But.... the French surrendered..." said Ishmael to his companions in shock. The advance guards swiftly fell back to the Ottoman fortifications outside of Marseille as the troops of Naples rushed through the city to the assault.

"Cannons!" yelled a commander behind Ishmael. "Give- FIRE!" A massive volley from the entrenched Ottoman artillery scythed through the air towards the oncoming Naples soldiers.

The soldiers sustained the fire, and reinforcements of 50,000 came charging through the Ottoman forces, killing any Ottoman soldier without mercy, and heavily outnumbering Ottoman troops.

A Naples General was sent to meet up with A French one to talk about how to drive the Ottomans out, and to decide which territories each nation should have.
