It was silent that night, the air was crisp as Daniel looked over Los Angeles, the capital of the United Socialist Partner States, it's lights bright and dancing. He fought in the revolution against the Dictatorship of America for his new country. He was always the bold one, embracing ideas and fighting for them. The bench he was sitting on was on a hill overlooking the city, the same hill he stood on while defending against Dictorial Army counterattack, the same hill he lost his right leg to a fragmentation grenade. Daniel could still remember the white hot pain followed by instant numbness. He had woken up three days later with a concussion and prosthesis.

He had heard about rebels in Free British Colombia, he couldn't understand why anyone would oppose the current government after being under the Dictatorship. Apparently they were communists who thought the new government hadn't changed enough from the old one. The "Marxist Thinkers Group" they called themselves. Well not everyone could be pleased.

A bright light followed quickly by a loud bang came from the city bellow. The explosion looked like it had taken out an entire city block. There were flames and secondary explosions popping off in the distance. Daniel quickly sprang up from the bench hews sitting on and limped to his car as quickly as he could. He needed to go home to ensure his wife, Erin, and son, Gary, we're okay.

As he slammed the car door closed on his jeep automatic fire came from the other side of the parking lot. Blood oozed out of Daniels mouth with his hand still on the ignition.

From the shadows came an imposing figure with a smirk on his face followed by several other men. "Search his vehicle. We will use this hill as an observation post until the Chamber of Senators and the Prime Minister have been seized," said the man as he looked at Daniels already pale body quizzically.

"Yes Leader," said one of the men and they did his bidding.

Prime Ministers Office-2 Minutes Before Explosion

Prime Minister Arthur Geis walked into the Chamber of the Cabinet, "What is it?" He appeared annoyed, having just been woken up.

"Sir," Aaron McMannon, Minister of Intelligence Gathering Agencies, said,"The Domestic Counter Intelligence Directorate has reported that a substantial amount of explosives and small arms, nine thousand pounds and seven hundred respectively, have been reported to have entered the country according to a Marxist Thinkers Group insider. He doesn't know what they plan to do with these, but this is huge."

"The Criminal Investigation Agency and the Counter Terrorism Service have both confirmed this," George Cancordia, Minister of Law and Order said nervously.

"And we don't know what they plan on doing with this shit?" asked Geis tentatively.

"No, but I recommend we go to REDCON 3 and you activate Plan 2, our continuity of government plan," said Frederich Steinberg, Minister of Defence, as he joined the tense conversation.

"No we don't know what they are going to do. We will go to REDCON 3, but I will not activate Plan 2. MTG is in Free British Colombia anyways," replied Geis.

"Actually we have reports they have started recruiting people in Free California," said Cancordia.

"Sir I have to back Mr. Steinberg on this, you need to activate Plan 2, just till we figure this out. I also put the Directorate of Protection on high alert," added McMannon.

"No for last time I wil-" Geis was interrupted by one of the aids.

"Sir an explosion has just gone of in the city, armed men have captured several office building outside the city, and tanks have been seen unloading off of freighters that we're just intentionally beached north of us."

"Fuck! Plan 2 in motion, take us to REDCON 4, Steinberg have our fleets block of our ports, no planes but military in the air, and get the army in here, McMannon see what info you can get about this from foreign sources, Cancordia launch an investigation into this shit and have the Domestic Paramilitary Force activated. Let's go people, then get to your assigned Plan 2 location."

Three hours later Geis was in his assigned bunker, which was very spacious and comfortable, witha large security detail in an undisclosed location.

JNN - Jarridian News Network

"And in international news there have been reports of a large explosion in Los Angeles, the capital city of the United Socialist Partner States. This comes after the USPS won it's independence from the dictatorship the previously controlled their lands. There is not a lot of information known at this time as the Jarridian government has yet to fully affirm that the new government of USPS is legitimate. Sources close to the Jarridian Department of Foreign Affairs have stated that while this affirmation is still pending that unfortunately no aid from a Jarridian standpoint can be taken." stated well-known JNN anchorman Kirk Bronson. His calm and soothing voice echoing from TV screens across the nation, he squinted his eyes and refocused his attention on the prompter. His silver hair crisp and neat, "and now on to our ongoing segment with Susan Brinkman..."

----------

Presidential Palace; Shelbin, Jarridia

Michelle Thoreson, her presidency of the Pure Democracy of Jarridia, was known for keeping the JNN at a low rumble throughout most of the day. Though she, as a rule, knew things before they were announced on TV she enjoyed keeping up with a variety of different topics. The news of the explosion in USPS has just aired when there was a knock on her office door. Emily Vaclavik, the Jarridian Secretary of State, entered the room with a small, neatly packed folder in her hands. She approached the desk and placed it before the President, "Ms. President, as I'm sure you just saw the newly formed nation of USPS has just been attacked and invaded by rebel groups from within."

"Yes, yes. It was just on the news. The fight for freedom is always a long an tough one. What brings you in?" says President Thoreson leaning back in her chair.

Emily places her finger on the file, "It is our policy to support governments that have been victimized by senseless acts of violence. Though we don't know the exact information behind these attacks, getting your signature approving the new government of the United Socialist Partner States would be a step in the right direction and perhaps send forth out helping hand to a new and fragile land."

President Thoreson sits back up and opens the file. She glances over the paperwork and looks back at Emily, "My concerns with approving this particular movement have been with the lack of prior information. We know very little about the previous nation, and even less about this new one. Their security obviously has massive holes, which is not surprising since they've just come off a rebellion. I generally decline these sorts of approvals until nations have proven themselves viable and worthwhile." She glances back down at the paperwork, "Having said that, I do see your point and perhaps sometimes the best course of action is a brief change in policy." She grabs a fountain pen from the holder on her desk and signs her name on the paperwork. She closes the folder and hands it back to Emily. "There, let's prepare an official statement to the Government of the USPS."

Adam Clinchs Bunker

"Sir, we have received an official communique from Jarridia pledging assistance," said Adams aid as they sat down at the confrence table. The bunker had five rooms; a confrence room, a bedroom, a staff quarters, a kitchen, a weapons locker, and a communications room. Even Adam didn't know where it was. All he knew is that it was in the middle of the desert.

"I already discussed the matter with Prime Minister Geis, he said no foreign aid unless we get to a point where we won't survive without it. And I agree with that we need to establish our legitimacy with foreign nations," replied Adam

Frederich Steinberg's Bunker

"First priority is dealing with those tanks. Options?" asked Steinberg.

"Sir we have fighter-bombers at Beale that can take out those tanks," replied the Air Force liason.

"ETA?"

"Five hours if I send the order now."

"Do it," said Steinberg as the aid walked out of the confrence room, "Whats the status on our military?"

The Army aid responded, "We have a total of six divisions guarding assets and population centers outside of Los Angeles, another three are closing in on L.A., and the rest are guarding our borders."

"Good, what about the military baracks in the city?"

"That barracks has about five hundred men. They've encountered heavy resistance to the south of the city and are expecting the north side to light up within the next few hours."

"And whats the ETA on those two divisions heading to L.A.?"

"Tomorrow, around three o'clock."

"Good, I'm going to send an update to the Prime Minister. When the airman comes back tell him to get ready to authorize airstrikes over L.A. I'm going to ask the PM for permission now."

“You! Set up those tents in the trees just beyond this hill. Knowing them they’ve already called in the Air Force, we need to stay out of site while we take over the city.” Krenchaw barked out orders as a furry of men did his bidding. I want contact with the tanks NOW!”

“Leader, the tanks, they are on sat com 3.” A private informed Krenchaw as he handed him the transmitter.

“Jacobson, take 50 tanks and 500 men and begin heading for the chamber of senators, I need them all alive. Do you hear me?! We at most have about 12 hours until any form of outside reinforcements hit the city limits; I want the Senators in our custody within the hour!” Krenchaw bellowed over the mic.

“Yes my Leader I’ll let you know as soon as we have the senators.” Jacobson replied through the handset.

“Leader! Our soldiers in the streets captured a senator, he was hiding behind a dumpster.” The soldiers laughed as they brought the senator up to Krenchaw.

“I hope you weren’t treated to badly, Senator…” Krenchaw inquired.

The Senator spit in Krenchaw’s face.

“My, my, my. What rude manners, and for a Senator too. What is your name Senator?”

“I won’t say anything!” The Senator defiantly replied.

“Tell me, Senator, where is your Prime Minister?”

“I wouldn’t tell you even if I knew!”

Krenchaw pulled out his .45 pistol and aimed it at the Senator’s left knee. “Once more Senator. Where is Geis!”

“Fuck you.”

bang The Senator fell to the ground with a thud, holding his knee in agony as the blood gushed out between his fingers. “YOU SHOT ME!!” The Senator screamed out. Krenchaw knelt down next to the Senator.

“Tell me Senator, where is Giles?”

“I…I.. I don’t know. Chances are he’s already out of LA the moment you fuckers showed up he’d be gone. He’s probably halfway across the country by now being guarded by Special Forces.”

Krenchaw stood up and placed his boot on the wound of the Senator and pressed down. The Senator yelled out once more. Krenchaw raised his pistol again and fired into his right knee. “Whhhhyy are you doing this? There are innocent people down there.” The Senator managed to gurgle out as some blood came out of his mouth.

“Geis, knows exactly why I’m doing this.” Krenchaw chuckled as he raised his handgun again, aiming for the Senator’s head.

“Please… you don’t have to do this… I’ll give you anything you want, money?!” The Senator looked up wiping the blood from his mouth.

Krenchaw raised his brow. “One more time, where is Geis?”

“I already told you, I don’t know!” The Senator cried out.

“Then you’re of no use to me.” In one smooth movement Krenchaw pointed his handgun at the Senator’s head and squeezed the trigger bang the Senator’s head pitched back as blood oozed out around his head.

“Leader! Jacobson is at the chamber of Senators now. He’s awaiting orders.”

“Jacobson, get in there and get those Senators!” Krenchaw spoke into the mic.

“We are meeting resistance, local law enforcement and some federal agents are putting up a resistance.” Jacobson informed.

“Do your best to capture their commanders, kill the rest of them.”

“Yes my Leader.” Jacobson replied.

Prime Ministers Bunker

"Yes, authorize airstrikes," Geis said into his phone to the air force aid.

"Line 3," his seceratery said.

"Hello," Geis said as he was picking up the phone.

"Sir, it's Cancordia. We just discovered, from our man inside MTG, that they are planning to use the Chamber of Senators as a trade for you."

"Why do they want me!?"

"I don't know, apparently their leader has something personal with you. Can you think of anything."

"No, sorry."

Off the coast of L.A.

"Down periscope!" yelled the captain of the UPSS Revolution, a Vampire Class submarine. "Do you have a firing solution yet?"

"Yes sir! Ten missiles set for Point Charlie, target is approximately one hundred men on a hill overlooking the city," replied the weapons officer.

"Roger, speed two knots," said the captain.

"Speed two, aye aye skipper," responded the engine officer.

"Equalize pressure in the missile tube," the captain ordered. "Open tubes! Fire!"

"One away," announced the weapons officer. "Two away, three away, four away, five away, six away, seven away, eight away, nine away, ten away. All missiles away skipper."

"Fourty-five seconds to impact," said a sailor watching a monitor. A minute later that same sailor said, "Impact, BDA from sat-link to follow. Looks like eight of ten hit the other two missed and landed harmlessly in the forest. It looks like we missed the head quarters but we snagged about seventy men and four vehicles."

"Good work," said the captain.

The Skies Over L.A.

"This is Ratpor Three, flight of three, Perigrans, CBUs, AGMs, thirty minutes playtime."

"Roger that Raptor Three, this is Wolfpack Seven, we have a large force massed at the Chamber of Senators, requesting air support, advise when ready for nine line."

"Raptor Three, go ahead."

"Point Zebra, three two seven offset south, three decimal two, zero two one, tanks and infantry in street, five eight one six keypad four, n a, two five zero south, to the east."

"Roger that Wolfpack Seven, target is tanks and infantry in streets, five eight one six keypad four, ready for further talk on and remarks."

"Use guns, AGMs, advice when at IP."

"IP hit."

"Do you see the Rower of Freedome."

"Got it."

"Two blocks south and there's your target."

"Got 'em."

"Rollin' in."

"Cleared hot."

"Bombs away."

"Roger, BDA to follow."

"Twenty two tanks destroyed, eighty troops dead, can you make another pass."

"Negative we're winchester, Raptor Theee checking out, have yourself a nice day."

Two Blocks South of the Chamber of Senators

The soldier looked in awe at the explosions up ahead. "We're still pinned down," yelled his platoon commander over the net.

Th radio crackled, it was the company commander, "Roger we are falling back to Point Echo to resupply, over."

"Roger that falling back, out," the platoon commander responded. "Alright boys, fall back."

OOC: How about a fight against a proper military?

Patrol Task Force 1, Royal Navy
75 Nautical miles west of USPS coast. Inside nautical boarders.

The UKG Dauntless, an Endurance Class carrier, steamed through the clear blue waters. A relatively modest vessel, as carriers go, she weighed in at only 22,000 tones, designed not for fleet actions but a supporting role.

The Dauntless, flagship of PTF1, was carrying out a routine operation to one of the World's many hot-spots, in accordance to Royal Navy doctrine. Given the nature of the zone she entered, the Carrier was flanked by several other vessels. The Assault Carrier, Ocean, and two fast patrol craft, Tracker and Exploit, provided her with her usual screen. However, her protection had been beefed up somewhat with the arrival of two heavily armed, Type 42 Destroyers, the Daring and the Aurora, dispatched from Task Force Reserve.

The role of the Task Force was two fold. Firstly, they were to gain access to the city of Los Angeles and remove any Goram nationals. Second, they were to generate as much intelligence as possible to ascertain the true situation within the USPS.

The commander of the Dauntless, was one Captain Donovan Smith, a veteran officer who started his career a lowly Seaman. He had aspirations to one day command a Fleet Carrier, one of Goram's 100,000 ton behemoths, but for now he contented himself with the Dauntless. He ran is ship with military precision, he did not accept excuses nor failure from the crew at his command. With his pipe lodged between his teeth, he stared down at the deserted flight deck. The deck was unusually quiet. The Task Force had come from combating piracy, resulting in a busy flight deck with CAP and EW always airborne. Now, however, without a threat, PTF1 relied on individual radar to detect incoming.

Thus far, the operation had gone well, with no hiccups on route. However, a blunder had been made that was not of their making. Primarily, Royal Navy ships navigate using GPS systems to indicate sea lanes, shipping positions and territorial waters. For some reason, the boarders of the USPS had been incorrectly marked, since their secession from the United States.

Because of this technical error, PTF1 had strayed inside territorial waters. Given the situation in L.A., this would likely not be taken well.

OOC: Yeah, you do. Engage me, I'll consider that an act of war, back the Terrorists and RP as both.

I like being able to build an overall strategy, rather than having to rely on another player to understand my plans. Of course, it's up to you.

Prime Ministers Bunker

"Yes I understand," said Geis into the phone. "Do they pose a threat? Then send is DestSquadTwo, good day." He then addressed the aides in the room with him, "Royal Navy boats have been spotted in our waters, and on top of that we believe they support those Marxist scumbags. I ordered Deetroyer Squadron Two to send all of their Wolverine Class Destroyers to intercept them."

"All eight sir?" asked one of the aides.

"Yes, and Carrier Force One will be steaming south tonight after conclusion of the airstrikes on Marxist training camps in BC. We also have one of our submarines moving into position."

"Which one?" asked another.

"The UPSS Resistance."

UPSS Resistance

"Incoming message!" announced a sailor.

"Give it here," commanded the skipper. He read it aloud to the crew after looking it over once," UPSS Resistance, break, Royal Navy units loyal to Marxist Thinkers Group approaching our waters, break, cleared to intercept, break, deadly force is authorized, break, end message. Alright boys you heard course three six one for five, speed standard, let's kick ass."

United Partner Army HQ

"Status update," ordered General Harker as he entered the command tent. The tent it's self was bristling with antennas that fed the thirty computer screens with information.

"Sir," his aid addressed him, "the sixth and tenth light infantry divisions are sorrounding the city to the north and east. The tenth is working down to the south to cut off their final supply chain. As per your order we have the fifty tanks from seventh armored and the seven hundred troops from third mechanized. They'll operate separate from their tracks, which will be hanging back waiting to be called forward for support. Air support will be provided by the second close air support wing. It's only a matter of time before the city is retaken. Oh, your gamble paid off with ordering that missile strike from the sub, we have identified that area as the command post of the MTG."

"Good, good. Have surveillance watch that hill, I'll order an airstrikes to deal with them during the attack and tenth can sort through it. Have the combined force start their role through the city and have twelfth combat support ready to take on the casualties and prisoners."

"Yes sir, did you hear about the Royal Navy?"

"I did, just worry about the terrorists for now. One at a time they are not a threat to us at this moment."

UKG Dauntless
Bridge

"Sir, both Daring and Aurora report strong radar contacts. Eight surface. Tracker and Exploit are also reporting a sonar hits on sub-surface contact. Contacts match known Destroyer and Submarine types. 150 NMI and closing."

The Captain's expression barely changed, only the worn pipe switched sides in his mouth. From the years of combat experience he'd had, he knew this force wasn't a group of well wishes.

"Navigation officer" he said over the secure intercom, "Double check current position"

"Aye Capt'n. Charts show current position to be 65 NMI outside USPS territorial waters. All other vessels confirm."

Slowly, the burly officer turned around. This was where the fun began.

Flight Deck, Dauntless

Barely twenty minutes before, the long flight deck had been deserted. Now, it was a hive of activity as five aircraft prepared to launch from the two steam catapults. Four of them were Super Ospreys, 4.5th generation fighters, capable of dealing with anything thrown at them. The fighters, given their role as Combat Air Patrol, carried a full air-to-air load, optimised for BVR engagements, where the Super Ospreys low radar cross section and advanced avionics would come into play. To aid them in this BVR role, and to better coordinate a strike package, the fighters were to be joined by a twin turbo prop Falcon AWACs bird. The Falcon, with its huge radar dome would increase the Task Force's radar range to around 400 miles in all directions.

In under ten minutes, all five birds were airborne. Despite the commotion on deck, the real action was occurring in the main aircraft hanger. The Endurance Class Carriers had space for up to sixty straight and rotory wing aircraft, up to 36 of those could be fighters. With four airborne and twelve in reserve, to rotate the CAP, the other twenty were being armed and fueled for a massive strike. With the apparent danger, the Captain wanted to be able to hit with all his might, and the air wing was the Royal Navy's finest asset.

Each aircraft would carry four ATS-10 anti-shipping missiles, each one capable of maiming a medium sized vessel. With eighty missiles in total, the goal was to sink at least one of the incoming ships, in an effort to buy some time and instill fear into the opposition's hearts. On top of this they also carried a sizable air-to-air payload, in the shape of four more ATA-4 short range missiles. The strike package, once ready, would be moved onto the deck, able to be fully airborne in only a few minutes if necessary.

The last of the air wing would come from UKG Ocean, in a pair of Shrike prop driven fighters. The Shrikes would use data from the Type 42's Towed Sonar Arrays, which could guide the aircraft over an enemy submarine. Once in position, each aircraft would drop a single Mark 99 torpedo, which would home onto the noise of cavitating propellers that powered the submersible.

UKG Daring
Bridge

The two Type 42's added some much needed punch to PTF1. Despite their age, the older vessels carried a wide array of weaponry, making them capable of going toe to toe with all but the toughest adversary. Inside the renovated weapons suite, targets had already been allocated to the two ships. Whilst, on their green screens, the weapons control officers could see the contacts, they did not yet lock on. The ships were not yet in range, and to lock on now would give away the Task Force's intentions.

Under an umbrella of CAP, AWACs, SAM systems and CIWS guns, the majority of the men and women in PTF1 felt that nothing could touch them. In the next hour or so, they would find out if that feeling was true or not.

Marxist Thinkers Group, survivors
Downtown LA

The downtrodden men huddled in what was left of downtown Los Angeles. Things had been going well, until Government air strikes had begun battering them.

They'd landed with dozens of armoured vehicles, cheaply acquired from shady arms dealers or simply stolen, and marched into LA. Since then, military strikes had destroyed dozens of tanks, killing hundreds of men. Now, the remaining forces were cut off and surrounded by at least two full divisions.

The men knew this, for many of them their courage hang by a thread. However, many more knew that Government troops, when they came, would show to quarter. These men, having accepted their inevitable fate, had resolved to kill as many hostile troops as possible. These men, weren't just ideologically ready, but they were also well armed, having looted Government stores earlier in the day.

The ruins of LA provided a perfect defensive scenario, the rubble and confined streets would make it difficult for Government forces to fully utilise their numerical superiority, and the tall buildings would make excellent firing positions. Given the street fighting nature of this battle, the insurgents would also make good use of improvised mines, and booby trap devices. the IED's would be made from explosives ranging from small fragmentation grenades and AP mines to dozens 155mm high explosive shells, rigged in a intricate pattern, that could destroy an entire company at a glance. The idea wasn't only to kill the enemy but to maim him horribly.

This battle wouldn't just be about killing the enemy, the insurgents wanted him to see his friends in agony, thus he might die in terrible fear. They would take no prisoners and so no quarter to the enemy, just as they expected to be treated.

No retreat, no surrender.

Carrier Force One-USPS Mantis-Mantis Class Carrier

As soon as the last plane returned from dropping ordanince in the training camps Admiral Steinberg, the brother of the Minister of Defence, ordered the carrier task force to turn tail and steam at full speed for the Royal Navy carrier task force. Force One was off the coast of Free British Columbia and wouldn't reach the battle for another thirty-six days?

The Mantis Class could carry sixty-seven planes. Three Shaman AWACs, forty-four Sealion A single seat fighters, and twenty Sealion B multirole fighters were aboard the carrier at the time. The UPSS Mantis was sorrounded by two Wolverine Class Destroyers, three Los Angeles Class Cruisers, and three Geis Class Frigates.

UPSS Resistance

"Depth to layer," the captain demanded more than asked.

"Two hundred feet sir," replied the sonar technician.

"Take us down three hundred feet, we're gonna get in as close as possible bad quietly as possible. Take us to one third speed."

"Aye aye Skipper, speed one third," replied a young sailor. The captain of the submarine was Shaun Gregary. He was a submarine captain for the Dictatorship of America and sommanded a Virginia Class submarine. During the revolution he used his missiles to help the rebels in San Fransisco and in return he was given keys to a shiny new boat. The coming hours were going to test him and his crew to the max.

Destroyer Squdron One

The Wolverine Class destroyer was a formidable destroyer. There were only ten in the world, all were produced by the Dictatorship of America. Before the rebellion took over the DA scuttled forty seven on the fifty seven in existence, such a loss. The Wolverine Class was partially stealth, it had a almost non existent sonar signature and a small radar cross section. It had forty nine vertical missile launchers containg anti ship missiles. A SAM launcher was mounted on the bow and could shoot off five missiles in a minute. There was also a small cannon located the box, but that was virtually never used due to the long range engagements of modern naval battle. The Wolverine had a last line of Defence against missiles, the CIWS system Andromeda. The Andromeda system could destroy incoming missiles out to one nautical mile, but the system could be overwhelmed if enough missiles were inbound.

The lead ship in the formation was the USPS Barber. The commander of the squadron was on board, "How many ships are there?"

"Looks like six ships, ones definitely a carrier," replied the radar operator.

"What's the status on CarComOne?" he inquired next to the navigation officer.

"They probably will only be able to provide air cover seeing as how the missile cruisers used up their weapons during combat operations in the north," replied the officer.

"Okay, Weps," said the commander next.

"Yes Sir," replied the weapons officer.

"Make a firing solution, first six of our ships each assigned to one of their ships, three missiles at all except the carrier which gets five. Then have a second barrage ready with twice the amount of the first salvo and two missiles to each target from our other two ships."

"Aye aye, I'm on it," replied the weapons officer as he went below deck to consult the weapons operators. Five minutes later he came back up, "Sir solution ready."

"Let's wait to get a little closer. Inform all captains to turn on passive stealth abilities."

Bridge, Dauntless

"Do we have solutions."

The Captain said in a very manner of fact sort of way.

"Aye Captain. Daring and Aurora are hot at this time. Both vessels report targets allocated and tracking. Enemy will be within range in...12 and a half minutes. The last of the Strike Package is getting airborne now."

In the few minutes before hand, the Task Force had swung into the wind, allowing the twenty Super Ospreys, with their anti-shipping load out to get airborne quickly. Surprise would be the key to successfully avoiding enemy defenses, therefore the RN pilots had kept low after take off. They'd flown low and slow, close to the Task Force, in an effort to remain hidden in the surface clutter of the Fleet.

The Strike Package involved 80 missiles against 8 targets, working out to ten missiles per target. The ATS-1, the missile in question, skimmed the surface of the sea, at altitudes of less than fifteen feet. The sea skimming nature of these missiles made them a nightmare for countermeasures that depended on radar, as they could slip in undetected. Even if they were detected, there seemed little chance that the enemy CIWS might carry enough ammunition to engage all necessary targets.

The problem would be that the enemy was attempting to jam the Royal Navy aircraft and shipping, in an effort to prevent detection. However, modern Navy systems centered around active phased array radar. The AESA system allows for the spreading of signal emissions out across a band of frequencies, which makes it very difficult to detect over background noise. AESA allowed the ships and aircraft to broadcast powerful radar signals while still remaining stealthy, whilst having an extremely low probability of intercept and high jamming resistance. They also served to further lower the users radar cross section.

With the AESA systems on full blast, the Super Ospreys began their attack runs at less than 60 feet. In days gone by, an attack run could be made in the teeth of tremendous flak, in order to deliver a dumb torpedo. However, in the modern world of the Royal Navy pilot, the range was 109 Nautical Miles, on the very limits of the missiles capability. At such low levels, there was a good chance that the already hard to spot jets would remain undetected. If they succeeded, the enemy fleet could be an entirely smoking ruin with one swing of the proverbial sword.

As the range closed down, through 110 NMI to 105, the pilots finally allowed their targeting systems to paint their targets. On the heads up displays of each aircraft, a single red box painted itself around one of the green contact symbols. The AWACs bird, still high above the fleet, with its fighter escort, had predesignated the targets to each aircraft, systematically calculating which missiles to send to which ships. All in all, each ship would be on the receiving end of ten missiles each.

In the cockpits of twenty jets, twenty lock tones chimed in unison.

"Baseplate, baseplate, this is Strike Lead. Lock attained, I repeat, lock attained. Permission to engage."

After a short pause, a reply came over every head set.

"Cleared to engage."

With missiles preselected and targets designated, all that was left to do was to flip off the safety and press the button. The pilots knew the risk, technically they'd not been fired upon, but the targets were clearly hostile. They'd made no effort to communicate and were steaming in at attack speed. The Navy had an advantage of having air power in their side, something that doubtlessly would not last. They had to make it count whilst they could.

Normal protocols called for the announcing of all missiles with brevity codes, but in this case there would simply be too many missiles in the air. Instead one pilot spoke.

"Strike Lead...Fox 3"

As he spoke, the first twenty projectiles dropped off pylons before the solid propellant engines kicked in, pushing the noses down towards the sea, before the on board computer leveled the flight at 15 feet. Seconds later the second ripple of missiles fell away, then the third, and finally the fourth.

With ordinance expended, the aircraft made low level turns, back towards their base. If any of them climbed too high, the USPS ships would have a far greater chance of detecting them.

On the Bridge of Dauntless the Captain sighed inwardly.

"Comms. Make this to the Admiralty. Hostile ships cleared for action against us. 100% certain hostile intent, targets engaged. Reinforcement required without delay."

Control Suite, Falcon AWACs, 15,000 feet above PTF1

" Exploit reports weak sonar contact with enemy submarine. Appears to be crash diving, at slow speeds. Sonar contact is sketchy, but we can hear him. Just."

Reported the signals officer.

The submarine, at present, represented the biggest threat to the Task Force. Prior signals indicated that she was a Virginia Class boat, designed for fast attack, a tough nut to crack.

On the deck of the Assault Carrier Ocean, the two torpedo armed Shrikes soared into the air. Reports had the submarine at a much closer range than the Destroyer flotilla and it was getting entirely too close for comfort.

The two piston engine aircraft skimmed over the waves at low altitude, being guided onto the last known location of the Boat. Upon arrival at the spot, the two aircraft circled slowly. They'd only have one shot at finding and killing their target. Their pilots, behind the blacked out visors of their helmets, gazed through the heads up display, waiting for the order to drop the cumbersome torpedoes.

At long last, the order came though as the UKG Tracker's TSA hydrophones picked up a slight murmur in the vicinity. Whilst it could equally be nothing, it could be a submarine. Breaking out of their low circle, the two Shrikes climbed slightly before embarking into a shallow dive towards the surface. At around 50 feet, the two 12.75 inch torpedoes fell away, entering the water with a muted splash.

As the aircraft turned for home, the torpedoes began a spiralling decent, their acoustic seekers desperately listening for a submarine. The pilots had done their bit in delivering the payload, now it was time to pit the skill of the Mark 99 design team against the skill of the submarine crew.

Destroyer Squadron One

"MISSILES INBOUND!" yelled one of the sailors.

"Here we go. Fire the solution, have all ships go head on into the enemy birds, fire countermeasures when the missilles are ten nautical miles out, activate CIWS," ordered the commander. All the eight ships turned port into the missiles, reducing their profile thus reducing the missiles chance of hitting. The vertical launchers erupting sending the designated missiles towards the enemy fleet.

"Sir, eighty missiles identified."

"Launch SAMs when they're in range."

"Roger that."

"Prepare a second fire missions of seven missiles per target."

"Yes sir, missiles eighty miles out." About twenty five seconds later, "Sir, missiles sixty three miles out, in SAM range."

"Fire a salvo of SAMs," commanded the commander tensely. The SAM launchers swirled towards the targets and they all fired at the same time. They made a high arc then went over the top and sped towards the missiles in infrared mode.

"Seven missiles destroyed sir, they're now forty two miles out."

"Have the guns ready. Fire the second salvo of ship to ship missiles."

"Yes sir cannons ready to fire," the sailor said knowing full well the cannons weren't meant for close range defence. "Thirty miles. Fifteen miles."

At ten miles the CIWS systems churned up and prepped to fire. At eight miles the commander ordered, "Kick all ships full starboard." When the missiles came into five miles the CiWS systems started firing and chaff and flares fired. Of the seventy three missiles remaing the CIWS systems took care of twenty four. Twenty two of the remaing forty nine missed, which left twenty seven of the missiles making contacts with the ships. Ten hit the UPSS Shrike, number seven in the formation, leaving it with no engines, a fire, and water being taken on. Ship five in the formation, UPSS Clarity, had seven hit it. Three to the water line, leaving two large holes. Of the other four one blew off the cannon, two chipped the right angle where the deck turned into the side, and one took out the radar. The remaining ten missiles hit the other six ships leaving either superficial damage, a destroyed cannon, or a patchable hole.

"Fuck me," let out one of the petty officers.

"Were ok," the commander said. "Have Shrike abandon ship, she's going down. And tell Clarity to turn tail and run to port for repairs. Before she leaves s have her fire whatever missiles whose tubes haven't been rendered useless, it looks like they got the computer room."

"Yes sir," replied a sailor. Thirty seconds later he came back and reported, "Sir, the Clarity has no tubes with viable missiles. We have 65 birds skimming towards them."

"Alright prep another batch of missiles."

UPSS Resistance

"Torpedoes in the water at zero seven six," announced a sonar operator.

"Hold steady, what's the search pattern?" asked the captain.

"Skipper, they're going in... What appears to be a snake pattern."

"Then they don't have us yet, cut the engines."

"Engines cut," replied the engine officer.

"Sir, two torpedoes heading straight towards us," the sonar operator shouted.

"Full speed, starboard rudder. Fire passive counter measures and the towed decoy," ordered the captain. " Straighten out," he ordered as the sub made ninety degrees. Ten seconds later one torpedoe went straight over and the other sent a loud ringing sound through the hull as it impacted the trailing decoy. "Okay that's over. Take us direct to their fleet."

An hour later the navigator reported, "Cap'n, we are close to the fleet."

"Perisope depth, speed one eighth," ordered the captain. A minute later he ordered the perisope to be raised.

"There appears to be one carrier, two patrol craft, two destroyers, and an assualt carrier," said the sailor operating the perisope. "We're to their six o'clock and directly behind one of the destroyers."

"A destroyers a good target," the captain said almost to himself. If he rendered that destroyer dead in the water it would certainly help the fleet. "Prepare all six torpedoes on him."

"Yes skipper," said the weapons officers he went to work. Three minutes later he stood up and said, "Tubes ready."

"Equalize pressure."

"Pressure equalized."

"Open tubes."

"Tubes opened."

"Fire."

"Six away sir."

"Crash dive full port rudde, let's turbans burn. Take us to eight hundred feet, that'll be well out of range for depth charges. Down periscope."

"Cap'n..." a sailor started.

"What?'" he replied, rather annoyed, "What is it?"

"I saw missiles streaking towards the enemy ships right before I brought the periscope down."

"How far away were they?"

"Looked like maybe ten miles out on the horizon."

UPSS Mantis

"The final aircraft has left Admiral," the captain of the Mantis reported.

"Good," he replied. A group of twenty fighters and ten multi role aircraft were heading towards the enemy fleet. The fighters would fly high five miles ahead of the multi role fighters engaging any enemy aircraft coming towards the strike package. The multi role fighter would each fire two airto ship missiles when one hundred miles out, then the entire package would turn and burn back to the carrier.

Flight Control Suite, UKG Dauntless

"CAP, we've picked up a new group of signals from EW. Bandits."

The Flight Control Suite was essentially a glorified air traffic control tower. It had dominion over the Task Force's air space and all of it's aspects. Now, it would act as a control center, taking the AWACs signals and relaying them.

"Baseplate, this is Bravo Two Actual. Bandits sighted, range 234 at angels 30."

"Roger Actual, you are cleared to engage. Weapons Free. Good hunting."

With a smile Bravo Leader flicked a pair of switches, arming his air-to-air missiles. With a third flick he armed his 20mm cannon. On his HUD the targetting system lit up at least twenty small, fast moving targets. Fighters. Bravo loved fighters, they were purists. Old breed fighter pilots who liked nothing more than a dogfight. Selecting his first target Bravo Actual said

"Bravo flight, turn two three zero, climb angels 45."

As the sleek fighters turned into their opponents, their HUD systems kicked into battlestations. The screens, in front of the pilot's eyes, showed twenty contacts or so, each one indicated by a green box. The maximum range of their longest range missile was exactly 100 miles, and with the enemy at more than double that range, there was little point in locking the enemy up as it would simply serve to inform the incoming bandits that the they had been spotted.

More over, the Royal Navy pilots wanted to attempt to draw the enemy into the range of the Task Force's surface to air missiles. PTF1's first line of aerial defense was the SAM-12 missile system. The 12 metre missile, flying at speeds and altitudes far in excess of any known aircraft, were mounted in VLS tubes aboard Daring and Aurora. These missile systems, when coupled with AWACs and the sophisticated control systems aboard Royal Navy vessels, were absolutely devastating. Test firings and simulations resulted in 95% hit rate against fighter sized targets at medium range, with only a slight drop off at maximum range. For fighter sized targets, the kill to hit ratio was 99.5%. By not locking up the enemy instantly, the pilots hoped to augment their already hefty punch with a lethal volley of SAM missiles.

This tactic, of not locking the enemy up, was apparently not one that the incoming bandits were going to use as, still at ranges around 125 miles, they'd tipped their hands to the RN pilots, as the Super Osprey HUD's warned the pilots of a hostile radar lock.

At that moment, the Super Osprey's AESA systems exploded with a fresh wave of contact.

"Baseplate, Bravo Two Actual. Confirm fresh contact, baring two three zero at foxtrot one five zero. Over."

"Wait out...Confirm Actual. Fresh contact baring two three zero. foxtrot one five zero. Cleared to engage all bandits. Out."

Blinking his eyes behind the blackened visor, the pilot known as Bravo Two Actual had a decision to make. Chances were that the first wave was a decoy and the second a strike package. Therefore the question was who to engage. The first group was only minutes away from coming into range. Making his split second decision the pilot called out

"Two your with me, engage first wave. Three and Four, engage second wave when in range."

The four Super Ospreys, in a very loose finger four formation, streaked towards their supposed enemy as pilots keyed in their targeting information. Flying at Mach 1.7, the range between the formations closed down rapidly until Actual called out

"Bandits at locking range. Lock them up."

In four cockpits, four pilots selected four primary targets and four secondary targets. The targets, 101 miles away and 15,000 below them, would automatically be engaged as soon as they entered range.

"Baseplate. Bandits in weapons range."

"Roger. Cleared."

As the clearance was transmitted, Actual closed his eyes momentarily and took a deep breath. This wasn't his first engagement, but even this late in his career, flying still made him feel alive. After several seconds, he recomposed himself as the green targeting box turned red.

"Bravo Two Actual...Fox Three."

With a flick of his thumb, the electronic signal began their journey, taking fractions of a second, through the wiring of the aircraft. The action culminated as the missile's locks opened and the weapon on his port wingtip fell away. The missile free fell for a half second, which to Actual felt like half a year. Then the solid fuel motor kicked in, propelling the semi-active radar guided missile on it's 97 NMI journey to target.

In less than 15 seconds, two more had been fired, both from Bravo Two Two. Together, the first shots streaked through the sky, locked into three separate aircraft. In a very few minutes, the three ATA-1's would be joined by a volley of SAM-12's, from the fleet, aimed at both the first and second waves.

Vulture Flight

"Targets on the nose, zero seven five for ten," announced the AWACS over the net.

"Roger that Shaman 1," Vulture Lead responded. "Lock 'em up and get ready boys. Vulture Two we're ten miles out get ready."

"Roger that, we have the ships on our radar," replied Vulture Two.

Two minutes later the cockpits of the first wave's aircraft lit up. "They launched on us, everyone Fox 3, Two hold on we're one mile out," announces Vulture One as first wave split to dodge the incoming missiles.

"Roger that we're holding on." On the horizon the missiles burned brightly as they hurtled towards the flight. "Flight fire on me," said Vultre Two as they closed towards the launch point. "Magnum, Magnum, missiles away, Vulture Two scramble, turn, and burn."

Explosions came from above Vulture Two as four of the aircraft from wave one blew up. "Shaman One four aircraft down, zero three three for five, two chutes confirmed," Vulture Lead said over the radio.

"Roger that, CSAR birds will be sent when the zone is clear," replied Shaman One.

"Copy, Vulture Two we are going to hang back and cover your retreat."

"Alright we're button out, we've lost one bird right after we fired," replied Vulture Two.

Bridge, UKG Dauntless

"Captain, we have incoming. Plus 50 incoming aerial contacts, six sub surface tracking Aurora."

The Captain nodded, he didn't say a word but then again he didn't need to. His orders, at this time, were unnecessary as all the other ships would have come to the same conclusion of what to do about the incoming contacts.

Almost as the Officer aboard Dauntless spoke, small projectiles fired out of launchers aboard every vessel in the Task Force, barring the two carriers. Cylindrical in shape, they looked like miniature depth charges and were fired in much the same way. Fanning out as they flew, the two dozen or so devices impacted the water about 150 yards behind the Task Force and slowly began to sink.

Once in the water, the purpose of the devices became clear as PTF1's hydrophones were swamped by two dozen massive acoustic signatures. Designed to mimic the noise made by ship's propellers, the countermeasures were at least one and a half times louder than an actual ship might be.

Now all eyes focused on the fading wakes, in the approximate location that the devices suspended themselves in the water. After agonizing seconds, a massive plume of water erupted from the surface, followed quickly by four more. However, as the sonar operators knew all to well, there was a single torpedo left.

As the weapon blazed towards the force, the target soon became clear. The torpedo was aimed for the UKG Exploit, one of the Fast Patrol Vessels. With her modest displacement, a submarine torpedo hit would leave her broken into small pieces, to quickly sink. The torpedo closed and the crew braced for impact.

Seconds later, it was all over. Exploit lay in the water, broken in two pieces. Her mid ships was completely eradicated as the torpedo detonated off target but close enough to break the ship's back. The main damage was done as the for'ad magazine exploded, ripping the ship in two. The two pieces sank less than 30 seconds after impact, with all hands lost.

As horrified deck crew watched the smoking wreck sink, the weapons crew, deep inside the ships, plotted their revenge. Hydrophones and sonar reported a crash dive, but it was not deep enough to escape entirely.

Whilst outside of regular torpedo range, both the Type 42's and the remaining patrol ship carried an ASW weapon unlike most. Named the ASW-6, it was essentially a torpedo with rocket powered wings. The solutions were attained and the unusual weapons shot off their launch rails. The single rocket booster propelled the warhead at several miles per hour, guided by preset coordinates, for a grand total of four seconds. After the fuel ran dry, the weapon became an unpowered glider. As they reached the target the glider dropped the torpedo which into the sea to commence circular search pattern, searching for the submarine known to be in the area. Two torpedoes had already failed, hopefully three would do better.

Whilst one threat had been dealt with, one way or another, a second was now approaching. This time, no human input was required as the Point defense system was already online.

Each ship carried several 20 or 30mm CIWS guns, designed to pick missiles out of the air with uncanny precision. The two Type 42's and both Carriers also carried SAM-10 point defense missiles, and as the missiles closed in, these weapons engaged with extreme, autonomous, prejudice.

At ten miles, the SAM-10 systems began popping off missiles every few seconds, each one locked onto the infra red signature of the incoming missile's drives. Once fired, the incoming missiles could not maneuver, unlike aircraft, meaning that SAM-10 hits were assured when fired. However there were simply too many for the sophisticated missile systems to deal with alone.

As the incoming closed to four miles, the radar controlled CIWS guns came alive. Each one began rattling out long blasts of cannon fire, the effects of which could be seen as black puffs and tiny plumes of water on the horizon as missiles were shot down. However, at a range of 900 yards the guns lost their lock, as the barrels were unable to track any further.

To the surprise of the radar operators, three missiles got through. SAM's had dealt with many, the guns with many more and countermeasures were supposed to mop up the rest. In simulations, the air defense network was almost unbeatable, yet here were three missiles streaking in on target.

One seemed to suffer a malfunction, slamming into the water at the last second. Another grazed Ocean's bow, exploding there, causing only superficial damage. The third, however, hit Daring on her starboard quarter, doing serious damage. Fire had broken out aboard the Type 42, and damage control scrambled to contain them.

Now that the incoming threats had passed, mostly, it was time to respond. With all the hitting power Daring and Aurora had left, they engaged the incoming USPS vessels. With a navalised version of the STS-10 missile, the Block II version, PTF1 engaged with everything they had.

Both destroyers unleashed what missiles they had left. Aurora, as of yet undamaged, let fly all eight of her STS-10 missiles, whilst Daring was only able to field six, with two launch tubes offline. Fourteen missiles now skimmed the water towards the enemy vessels, whilst the attack was no where near as potent as the one they'd just endured, the Block II STS-10 was a vaunted system, far more dangerous than the air launched version, capable of sinking ships with one good hit. In conjuncture with the STS-10's, Daring and Aurora also engaged with 24 SAM-12 missiles, aimed at both groups of enemy aircraft, both of which were now attempting to escape the zone. With any luck, not all of them would be returning to their carrier.

It was hoped that the strike would buy time for the Royal Navy aircraft to be recovered, and for the fleet to egress from the area.

His Majesty

Postby Maron » Sat May 05, 2012 11:44 am

It had been a quiet day, for the King inside of Dunedin Palace, his sister was at the club, and his wife was swimming in the pool out behind the Royal Summer Residence. Five days ago he had been inside Chamberlain Palace in Christchurch enjoying his tea, and now he was in the Summer Residence. not that it mattered. He was King of Maron after all, one of the most powerful men in the world and it was good to be back at the palace that he had inherited when he was the Prince of Dunedin just seven months prior. His Majesty King Ryan was enjoying the tradtional Choclate covered bread that was famous in Maron when he recieved a call from the Prime Minister.

"Your Majesty, its urgent, do you have a minute?"
"Yes, Mister Prime Minister."
"There's been a Terrorist attack in the United Socialist Partner States sir. The details will be forwarded to you shortly. His Royal Highness, Prince Alexander in the acting capacity as Lord High Admiral, has authorized the the mobilization of a Star Class Battleship and the authorization of the Q-Class Aircraft carrier. The Minister of Defense is thinking about receiving a declaration of War."
"Once we have the facts, Prime Minister I'll make the call. However, at the present time, i believe it just...
"Your Majesty, there has been a second wave of attacks and the attacks have escalated. There has been a issued declaration from the ambassador from the USPS sir. As your acting Prime Minister i strongly urge you to defend this nation."
"Mobilize the Kidon Unit Prime Minister. Oh and a legion of George Class Tanks. That should bring a little heat to the party."

The government of the Republic of the United Socialist State of Dean (RUSSD) is appaled by aggressive attack on the United Kingdom of GOram by the United Socialist Partner States. Therefore we declare war on the latter and send support to the former. This shall come from a fleet outside territorial waters that were observing by listening to radio chatter. We know that the United Kingdom launched a pre-emptive against a clearly aggressive enemy.

Somewhere off the coast of the United Socialist Partner States.

Once the message had been sent the fleet of 1 super carrier, 1 VSTOL carrier, 1 Arsenal ships, 2 heli-carriers, 2 single-hulled cruisers and 1 pentamaran cruiser turned and sailed into territorial waters. These were escorted by 14 VT Sea Wraiths (treated as multirole destroyers by the Deanish Navy) and 20 BMT frigates.

On board the RUSSDS Dean.
The 360 metre 110,000 ton Flagship cut through the water. Admiral Thomas Dean watched over the flightdeck. " Inform our new allies, the Uniteg Kingdom of GOram, that we shall be sending one AWACS and 10 EF Typhoons to give their fleet some aircover. Preparations began. The Typhoons were catapulted into the air by the Electrmagnetic Aircraft Launch System(EMLAS). The AWACS came last. The Deanish carrier born AWACS was a sleek aircraft with swept wings, canards and twin tails. It was topped off by by a streamlined, if a little ungainly, radar dome and it's engines were slung under the wings similar to an airliner. An ASW aircrafted landed. It was based on the AWACS design but with no radar dome and the rear cabin that housed equipment was replaced with a Bomb-Bay. 2 Harpoon anti-ship missiles slung of pylons under the wings.

Bravo Two Actual, as calmly as he could, spoke into the radio mounted in his mask.

"Splash one bandit."

Despite his attempt at remaining professional in the cockpit, the thrill of air combat was notable in his voice. The thrill lessened somewhat as the HUD flashed a missile warning. A similar warning flashed up on the screens of two other aircraft.

"Bravo Two, break. Break."

Almost as Actual spoke, his wingmen broke formation. All but one of them had a tailing missile but all four pumped out chaff in an effort to mislead the radar guided weapons. The tactic worked, mostly. Bravo Two Three twisted her aircraft left and right, but the warning of a missile lock still remained. She could feel the sweat dripping down her face as the on board computed chimed that the missile was gaining on her fighter.

With one desperate attempt to survive, Two Three pumped out the last of her chaff. Seconds later the Super Osprey was buffeted by a massive explosion. Warning lights triggered all over the HUD. Two Three was hit, but not fatally so. The explosion had peppered the Super Osprey with shrapnel, damaging vital systems and shredding one of the vertical control surfaces. It had also caused a flame out in the number two engine.

"This is Bravo Two Three, I'm hit! RTB! Clear the decks, Baseplate. Guys, I need cover."

She called out, the fear in the voice of the young pilot was evident as was her disregard of brevity code.

Bridge, UKG Dauntless

"Sir, sitrep."

One of the Bridge Officers said to the Captain.

"We've lost Exploit and the Daring is badly hit. We're low in munitions and we don't have time to turn the strike package around, we need to egress."

The Captain turned, as if to say something to the man, before he was interrupted by a second officer.

"Capt'n, AWACs reports a huge fleet in bound baring zero four zero degrees. Transmission picked up suggests their friendly sir. Signals match known classes of RUSSD warships."

The Captain gave his orders, and picked up a radio headset. Setting over his cap, he took the pipe from his mouth and waited for the the Dauntless' communications team to give him the signal.

"This is Captain Donovan Smith, commander of the UKG Dauntless, flagship Patrol Task Force One. Request cover for extraction from combat area. Heavy damage and casualties sustained. Repeat we need cover to extract. Over.
