On Milogradian Dharconianism

Postby Milograd » Tue Feb 12, 2013 3:01 pm

I was having a telegram conversation with someone about my nation's ideology, and I figured I'd share a bit about dharconianism for those of you who may be a bit confused about it. He said it helped him understand it.

As for your writing, I am familiar with many of the unpleasant side effects of Dh'arconianism as a result of reading a number of your RP threads and reference posts, and needless to say, I find myself asking the same question I do about every other fictitious dystopian society: "What is the ultimate end goal that the dystopian society is trying to achieve, assuming that it has unlimited time to develop?"
RE: Your Question

I must admit that I'm not too skilled at explaining this and maintaing a singular focus, but I'll try to. The effects of dharconianism in practice are described in my post in F&NI about the ideology.

The goals of dharconianism are, or were, twofold: survival, and the "ideal." The "ideal" is intended achieved through internal means.
The first goal of the ideology is survival, but the dharconian description of the means by which it can supposedly be achieved are divided into "internal" and "external" actions. It is worth remembering that the ideology is essentially a response to the historical causes of decline in most nations, and it is also a response to the constant warring in the NationStates multiverse. Nations rise and fall without warning in NS because of the existence of hyper-militaristic and imperialist armed entities that won't hesitate to wipe a nation off the map because even the most slight of transgressions.

Milograd is now in the survival stage of its version of the "dharconian process," which is notably more radical than the traditional version. The state is essentially waiting out a storm, per say: while the international community perpetuates massive wars and struggles that are inherent with international competition, the government of Milograd aims to hide its people in a storm bunker. The creation of atomic weaponry heralded the ideologies return to prominence because of their ability to destroy so much in such a little amount of time. The original version of the ideology stated that the decline of non-dharconian civilizations could gradually occur over the course of eons, but the rise of atomic, chemical, and biological weaponry has led the modern dharconian to assume that a catastrophe associated with those weapons is what will bring humanity to its knees.

Milograd, as the primary example of the new dharconian model, is as isolationist and hermit-like as it is because it wants to avoid attention. Its leadership figures that isolating itself and having absolutely no interaction with the international community will help it draw little attention to itself. Their logic is simple: if a nation isn't making headlines, throwing its weight around, or standing on the other side of such weight-tossing, they aren't going to be a primary target of other nations. International heavyweights, imperialists, and so on are far more likely targets for attack. If the current trend of international hostility continues, the High Command (hereafter referred to as "HC") figures that sooner or later they'll be among the last societies left.

Of course, the Milogradian dharconianists are not ignorant about the existence of external anomalies; several nations have tried and failed to topple the Milogradian regime. They acknowledge that their safety from foreign threats is not ensured and cannot be guaranteed until there are no foreigners left. Of course, a nation of 4 billion people can't possibly cause that on its own, so they have no choice but to play the waiting game. The HC has taken countless measures to make Milograd's military capable of defending itself, which helps explain why the country is so militarized.

The "external" aspects of the dh'arconian mission are mostly its inoffensive qualities, and a large part of what I described above would be classified as external actions by a dharconian HC member. Internal aspects are the tricky part.

With the goal of survival in mind, the dharconians considered the most popular and dangerous internal causes of instability in historic nations. There were certain causes that were largely out of their control such as natural disasters and a lack of access to necessary resources, but they also realized that there were a lot of things that they could control. Most of these issues were similar to what most governments try to fix: crime, poverty, a lack of order, et cetera. However, they had their radical revelations when they analyzed the science behind revolution. Many of Milograd's actions are meant to prevent revolutions.

Revolutions in NS' world are usually sparked by ideological dissonance and/or problematic disconnects of ideology between the people of a state and their rulers. The aforementioned concerns about how revolution could threaten their goal of survival motivated them to eliminate its cause. Their first steps towards this were quick and noticeable: they stole the arms of their citizens, began their propaganda vast campaigns, eliminated racial tension by eliminating all but a sole race, and closed the nation and its people off from foreign ideas by making travel in and out of the country impossible. They progressively became more subtle about it, however, and after forty or so years of "progress" they achieved what the current state of Milograd is.

What's that, though? Well, the government controls just about every aspect of their peoples' lives as of 2013 ICly. They decide what you look like, what you do, what you know, what you don't know, where you live, what you do everyday, when you do what you do, what you're called, what you eat, what you aspire to be, what you believe, when you die, and so on. (The specifics of what that entails is described in detail in some of my other threads, albeit I want to re-write them eventually because I believe that they don't show the cohesiveness of the ideology too well.) This is another example of the motif of the government not trusting the people to act in their best interests; they truly believe that they're guiding them through that storm that I mentioned a while ago, and that they can't survive without their guidance. The Milogradian government wants the best for its people, mind you, but they don't think that they'll be ready to manage themselves until the storm passes. They also know that the people can't and won't revolt if the people are exactly what the government wants them to be.

Oh, by the way, the Milogradians originally shrouded their internal actions from the international community to avoid provoking an attack or condemnation so that isn't something that I overlooked. I RP'd a leak in 2011 that brought a lot of my crimes to light.
During the survival stage, the government is doing all that it can to ensure that the nation does exactly as the stage's name suggests. They want to be capable of defending themselves, relying on themselves, and innovating technology by themselves. They don't care about much else so as long as their people and their government survive.

The ideal stage of the dharconian process originally entailed a peaceful, prosperous, self-reliant society of equals founded on the simple premise of making life as pleasant as possible. It was more complicated than that, of course, but it's irrelevant in modern IC times. Sadly, the leaders of the dharconian resurgence manipulated the original ideal, and now there is no true endgame for Milograd now. Power was originally meant to be a means to an end in Milograd, but it was transformed into nothing but an end. Survival is all that remains now.

Hello. I was thinking of making my RP nation Dh'arconian, and I just wanted to ask for if the following would be compatible with a Dh'arconian state.

Incredibly nationalistic,
Does not trade with foriegn nations,
Far right wing economics,
Ruled by a royal family,
Genocides atheists,
Engages in imperialistic conquests.

Thank you. Sorry if this is gravedigging. I just wanted to ask.

Most of your criteria is appropriate for a dharconian state. Here are my comments:

  • Incredibly nationalistic, <<< This is inherent to a dharconian state.
  • Does not trade with foriegn nations, <<< This is inherent to a dharconian state.
  • Far right wing economics, <<< This is fine.
  • Ruled by a royal family, <<< This is fine.
  • Genocides atheists, <<< This is fine.
  • Engages in imperialistic conquests. <<< Dharconian states are almost always anti-imperialists.

Alright. I am intending on making my empire Dh'arconian, and I just wanted to make sure that my intentions for it were appropiate. I will be sure not to have it be imperialist. Thank you for your time.

May I ask a question? What colours would a Dh'arconian flag have on it? It's just that, you know, Socio-Communist flags have red on them, monarchist flags have often got Gold and Blue, so what would a Dh'arconian flag have on it? Also, who is in charge of a Dh'arconian state? A president? Premier? Who?
Thanks again,
Felbah

Oooh, I know this, me! Me! Pick me sir!

....

The Dh'arco Rahavuhra is the leader of a Dh'arconian state, so if your leader was called Jeff he would become Dh'arco Rahavuhra Jeff. As for the colours, look at Milograd's flag.

» Brief History of Dh'arconianism in your nation: [ Answer ]The Dh'arconian Soviet Empire was founded on March 28, 2013 when a Dh'arconian rebel by the name of Alexander Ivano succeeded in a coup against the King Dynasty which previously ruled the Empire. Dh'arconian Thought was established as the ideology of the Empire and an extreme religion known as Angkorism, founded in Talos. Millions of people were murdered and millions more expelled from the Empire. The Dh'arconian Soviet Empire is currently ongoing and ruled by Alexander Ivano.
