An Eternal Twilight [GaW]

Postby Tuthina » Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:13 pm

Orbit of Kinovar I, Kinovar system

Kinovar was a red dwarf near the core systems of the Futura Sobornost. It was a fairly young star, as stellar flare that made the dim star shined towards the nearby worlds brighter, causing havoc in the process. However, among these worlds, the innermost world, named Kinovar I after its mother star, was deemed to be capable to support humanoid life, and indeed, it had. Between the everlasting cyclone facing the star, and the permanent tundra facing away from the star, river deltas and swamplands created a potentially habitable ring for its inhabitants. Shielded from the UV lights by its heavy armour salvaged from the colony ship, they managed to survive in this alien world without outside help.

After receiving reports of a renegade colony on Kinovar I, built by another human faction and lost during the war, the Sobornost decided to claim the new world as one of its increasing numbers of territories. At the libration point behind Kinovar I, shielded by the planet from the glares of the star, the lights from the stars started to distort with surrounding space, as if a black hole was coming into form at the location. The distortion gradually increases, ultimately creating a black orb at the centre.

However, the black hole suddenly retreated back into itself, revealing the cluster of grey metals that was its nature. As the distortion completely melted into oblivion, the spacecraft sent from the Sobornost to claim this world was revealed, slowly floating above the white tundra of Kinovar I.

Rather than spacecraft, it resembled more like a large space station, as it was composed of two rings of grey cubes, interconnected with tubular tunnels and converged at the central rod-shaped core. Upon it was a new symbol among the emblems of the worlds of the Sobornost. All worlds, despite their varying environment, all believed in the goddess Futura, just like the identical outer ring of all those emblems shared.

Among the modular compartments of the space station, a few hundred individuals, all of them genetically-engineered, bio-augmented “humans”, commanded and interconnected through their cybernetic implants to the total network in the station. At the centre of this pseudo-hive mind was the on-board computer at the core of the space station. While not a true artificial intelligence like Futura, it still processed great intelligence to moderate an entire world, and its farcaster connection with Futura itself meant it can solve even the most complicated situations posed to them.

Soon after calibrating the descending orbit of the space station, a warning was given to everyone on board. In mere hours it would be disassembled and separately land on the new world. At the same time, some of the cryogenic chambers were opened. The minds of those individuals, previously connected to the mainframe for interaction and work, were released back to the awakening bodies, as they slowly stood from the chamber and got a hold of themselves.

Among them was Kobayashi Kazue, the one closest to the human leader of this expedition. Unlike the “functions”, which were merely puppets of the computer to perform their deeds, Kazue had her own soul. Designated as the commander of the expedition, both her soul, body, and implants were tailor-made for her job, granting her extraordinary bodily functions and beauty, as well as enhancing her reflexes and other functions.

It did not take her long to reconnect her mind with the others on board, as they started to move towards different compartments and connect to the local terminal to initiate landing procedure. While most adjustments were made by either the mainframe or the local computer, at least one of these enhanced humans were connected to ensure nothing went wrong, and to respond in emergency.

As all her subordinates once again connected to the terminal, Kazue sat back to her seat in front of the command post of the local hub. Once the landing was completed, it would become a relay station for information between nearby compartments and the mainframe, and thus the heart of the new colony. From her neck she pulled out a wire, and connected herself with the terminal with ease. As the connections opened, her mind was filled with all the senses given by this compartment. Once again, she felt that she was floating in space, with the glare of the star cleansing her body. Inside her were new lives that were raised by her, and the future of her and humanity.

She quickly assumed control of the compartment, as the airlocks between them started to seal. Afterwards, tubules between them was detached and reshaped to offer more protection to the compartments during the entry. Specifically made to withstand the entry and land safely, the dry and cool air within was not affected by the flames engulfing the modules as they enter the stormy atmosphere of Kinovar I.

Hours later, all modules landed onto the surface of the planet without accident. Heat shields were disassembled along with the emptied thrusters, revealing the bunker-like modules of the colonies. The network that made all cities in all worlds of the Sobornost was quickly assembled from node to node, sending every bits of information to the core, which managed to land as well. All of these information would be analysed and sent back to Futura, as part of its plan to administrate the entire faction of hundreds of millions of people.

From these modules, automatic mines, greenhouses, farmhouses, arsenal, forge, as well as breeding chambers, the production will be started once they went online. Within mere hours, the first batch of local individuals will be born, armed with locally-made equipment to further expand the cities of theirs. However, before this world can be claimed in the name of Futura, heretics must be cleansed. With that order given by the goddess herself, Kazue started to organise the compartments in her sector into a network, interconnected to relay order and information at the speed of light. Within hours, the first division of soldiers will be born, equipped, trained, and ready to fight and die for Futura.

Dolmhold wrote:"Me too!" Dan replied, and they had a good laugh from it. Dan then checked the potential hires area of his starfighter.

OoC: Futura, you can hire them if you want now. If not, I'm going to hire them for whatever reason.

As Dan checked the hire area, he received a message. What was curious is that the message was sent from a government, an ally of Dolmhold, actually.

Dear my friends,

We have long heard of the splendid ability and history of yours, and we find ourselves in a situation where contribution from you would greatly benefit us. Please arrive at Kinovar I of Kinovar system if you accept our deal, we will provide more information, as well as any supply, material, or favours you might ask for.

Yours Faithfully,
Futura Sobornost

They had heard of Kinovar system. It was a small system at the border of the Sobornost. Powered only by a red dwarf, all worlds except the innermost one were lifeless tundra and balls of ice, and the innermost one - probably the Kinovar I mentioned - was tidally locked and divided into either eternal tropical storm or eternal tundra. Those cyborgs must have gone mad to settle on such a world.

"Well, what do you say?" Dan asked.

"I'd say that we'd better pick our starfighter and jump there soon!" Jake replied. They were talking over cybernetic implants, allowing for them to talk despite being far away.

"Well, since it is an ally, I'll pick my best weapons. I'll load with three very small missiles in case we would be allowed to knock some asteroid out of trajectory to quicken the job, thousands of SCMFEBs, the spacecraft with the most antimatter fuel, and hope that I would still break even should I have to use up everything," Dan replied.

"Well, that's the price of our 'Dolmhold and Allies First" policy," Jake replied.

They then opened a wormhole, and jumped though, with a message announcing their arrival. They had still stuck with their favourite models of spacecraft.

As soon as the starfighter went through the wormhole and emerged at the other side of it, the bright red star of Kinovar immediately shined onto them, which would have blinded any unprepared individuals looking directly towards her. Despite being a red dwarf, the close proximity of Kinovar I - and the starfighter accordingly - made it still very bright and large. The constant particles that emitted from her and bombarded the orbit, making every communication seemed to be distorted a bit.

However, it did not take long for them to find the target planet. It was a tidally locked world at the edge of the star, with one side consumed by a gigantic tropical storm, while river deltas and swamplands can be seen at the twilight zone of the small planet. As they approached this strange planet, their arrival received a reply. Apparently it took an unusually long time for the cyborgs to reply, given that every time they arrived at one of the Sobornost homeworlds, every replies were almost instantly made.

"It was our pleasure to receive you and your assistance. Welcome to Kinovar I." Even after filtering most background noise, the communication still sounds distorted, but it was clear enough to understand most words, and to identify the speaker as female - not the usual sylph functions that welcome people on the homeworlds, either.

"Your landing has been authorised. Please enter our station according to the following procedure. We shall discuss our affairs further there." Among with the communication, the bounty hunters received a set of protocols and coordination for landing on one of the space station on the orbit of Kinovar I, as usual for the Sobornost.

With that in mind, they approached the boxy space station floating just inside the shadow of the planet. Like virtually everything the Sobornost had offered, it was a combination of metal boxes and compartments, bolted together on a backbone. It was an ancient design, perhaps centuries before the time of the Dolmhold, something that resembled a relic from a far distant past of old Earth.

The starfighters had no windows, for it was considered exceptionally stupid to allow extreme electromagnetic radiation into the cockpit. Instead, the pilots connected with the ship and viewed the universe through thousands of small sensors, and like the pilots of the mythological fifth generation atmospheric fighter jets, they could see through the walls of their fighter. Technological advances made viewing the universe like this essencially indifferent to viewing it from a window, perhaps better even.

The particles were of no issue either, for since the dawn of Dolmholdi spacecraft back in the years when Dolmhold was a Earthy nation, magnetic fields on the scale of teslas or higher were typical to shield the passengers from any and every form of particle radiation. It was just bonus when it was figured out that it further protected against enemy particle beam weapons, plasma weapons, sometimes projectiles and also generated a very beautiful auora, like the auora borialis, around the spacecraft. It would unfortunately obstruct vision though, and several mechanisms are in place. The first asorbs the auora and transforms it into energy, or on this case augmenting the propulsion, like how the van alien belt was used for energy back when Earth existed. The second method throws the auora away. Since there was not much of a hurry from the tone of the message, the first option was preferred.

The spacecrafts were going to dock soon, and so the magnetic fields were weakened. They slowly rotated and applied thrust in the opposite direction from their velocity. Careful planning was used so that the exhaust would miss the space station in case it could damage it. They were going to dock slowly. It was believed that a hangar bay would open, but this was uncertain. Very uncertain.

Dan hated having to park in reverse. It was quite painful in a mental and sometimes scary. He hoped that he'd be allowed to use magnetism inside the spacestation to park. Jake thought the same, the two of them had this common reason why they'd stay in their spacecraft for a long time.

As the starfighter approached the space station, the location marked as the hanger bay opened one of its exterior wall. Like all other hanger bays built by the Sobornost, it was a pretty standard dock designed for small space vessels from starfighters to transport ships to dock - an essential compartment for inter-vessel transport. Fortunately for them, since the alliance between the Sobornost and Dolmhold was forged, traffics between these standard docks were frequent enough, to the point that their on-board computer had programmed an automatic procedure during its update, in addition to the assists given by Kinovar I moments ago.

Soon after they docked with careful maneuver and magnetic assists, the wall closed again, sealing the compartment from the hostile space outside. From the sensors they could detect the chamber being gradually filled with breathable air. Although both the total pressure and composition was different, it was calibrated so that it would not feel different by normal people. As the air filled the entire dock again, one of the gates opened, and a signal for safe leaving was given to the bounty hunters.

From the gate, about a dozen female in uniform walked in. Like the functions that were omnipresent in most government building of the Sobornost, they were beautiful, but without much spirit. Although there was a nice variety of appearance, many of them did look similarly boring to them, knowing that these soulless bodies could be grew and bought, literally.

However, one of them seemed to be a real female. With a brown ponytail and a generally white skin, she walked towards the docking bay with the functions and welcomed them with a bow.

"It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Kobayashi Kazue, the assistant commander of the sector of Kinovar I."

"90% mark... Safe mark." Jake mumbled as he got the information from the scanners. He then got out of the starfighter, which was remarkably cramped. No one really minded it because they practically became the starfighter after they integrated themselves with it. A hatch opened, and he got out.

He and Dan were greeted by a group of female humans, which they knew were just somewhat soulless servents of Futura. However, the one that stepped out caught his eye. She did not exactly act like the rest of them, and had a tad more of the soul in her. That was nice.

"Thanks Kobayashi Kazue. Now, what is the situation at hand? What needs to be done? I've heard rumors of wiping out another human settlement," Dan asked.

"It would be tragic if that was required, but what needs to be done needs to be done. Although I'd try to make them surrender, then fuse them into the nation," Jake mused.

"Jake, you know that Futura does not need those assets unlike many nations, so stop musing around," Dan nudged.

"You are welcome." Kazue nodded and smiled, which is natural enough to not give a creep to the bounty hunters. Although since the alliance was forged, the technique of the Sobornost seemed to improve a bit, as the functions acted pretty much like normal people in untrained eyes. Some of them in Golos were indeed identical to real human - maybe except the body, which had several sockets at the back of the neck for access. "Now if you may, let us have a seat while I brief you the situation."

As she said, the functions and her guided the bounty hunters across the station. After a trip through the elevator, they could feel the gravity coming back again, although still noticeably lower than 1 G. The station itself was a pretty cozy, if a bit inorganic place. Everything was painted in white and lit with lights from the wall itself. There were no notable decorations on the station, save for the repeating doors and gates that lined up at the wall in perfect order, and several occasion screen that showed the images from outside, as well as some commercials from other worlds of the Sobornost. Everything was nice, but they cannot help but feel a bit like in a gigantic aseptic room.

"As you might heard of it already, this world was claimed under the name of Futura and named Kinovar I after the main star. However, during that devastating war, a colony ship from another faction reached here and established a colony on its own. Now, since the government was gone, it had become independent." Kazue said, as they entered a bright conference room. Behind the seat of Kazue there was a large sign of Futura, marking its sovereignty in this station, and the world below it.

"While it is true that Futura need no defectors to strengthen her ranks, total eradication of the target settlements was not absolutely required either." As Kazue said, a hologram of a settlement was shown from the table to the hunters. It was not a very big settlement, maybe 10,000 people top, but it was obviously built from a wreckage of a colony ship, and was armed to stop any potential native lifefrom from attacking - including other humans. Though, it seemed that the defense against air was not as strong as the ground-based one.

"Your goal is simple: to destroy the central command post of the targeted settlement, which would be able to paralyse the essential functions of it." Several points of the settlement flashed in accordance of the speech of Kazue. "Whether or not other civilian structures considered targets, we shall leave it to your discretion. As long as the functions were down, the Sobornost would be able to claim it."

"For payment, once the work is considered done, Futura shall offer you wealth as required. Alternatively, premium services from other sectors of the Sobornost can be given, too. For example, a permanent residence in Golos, as well as access to various morph services in the region." They had heard that Golos was the centre of entertainment of the Sobornost. Unbelievable as it might sound, Golos was a good place for a rest, for it had almost every recreation facilities imaginable, from good old gambles and arcades, to service from custom-built females, even virtual reality can be offered with astonishing effects. "Is there any questions or inquiries?"

"I did not realize it was going to be a ground attack, a specific one at that," moaned Dan. "Why did I not prepare for this!? I guess I have to head back and..." He stopped, and proceeded to link back to his starfighter. He examined the small rockets he had brought though the spacecraft itself.

"I think a few classical attacks would do," he smiled, remembering his history lessons. The rod from god, a weapon first used in the early space eras with a devastating effect and still somewhat in usage today (although more conventional methods are now in use, namely asteroids), he got to work brainstorming the modifications needed. He narrowed it down to an aerodynamic cap.

"Could I buy modifications for my spacecraft's on board missiles? I have a devious plan," He said. "Jake, remember the Rod from God?" He asked.

"That's why you're successful," Jake replied.

"The modificaion which I speak of is an aerodynamic cap coated with reinforced carbon-carbon and mut onto the top of the missile. Afterwards, just drop it on them from orbit. Back in the old days, there was global strike 25 foot precision, I believe. Now, it should be dead on," He explained.

"We are sorry for not providing such information prior to your arrival." Kazue, as well as the functions, who seemed to be synchronised with her action, bowed to them. Though, the changed reaction of Dan was noted by them, too.

"Of course you can have access to any modification we can offer in this sector." The human replied, after she stopped for a few second for thinking - or maybe connected to the main frame. All these cyborgs seemed to be always connected to the network. "As long as the required mission can be completed, the Sobornost can supply your equipment with minimal price. And as far as the plan of yours sound, it would be a very nice investment."

She stopped for a second again, then her returned to the bounty hunters and blinked. "The required modification is being installed to your weaponry. It will be done in minutes. In the meantime, would there be any more inquires?"
