SSA Release Lunar Still Photographs

Watched live by millions throughout the Empire, and further billions outside her borders, the Holy Empire of Stevid conducted its first manned mission to the moon on 11 Aug. McBain's Motion of No Confidence now comes into question, even if the Motion goes to the vote in the Commons it is uncertain whether it'll pass without the Leader of the Opposition behind it.

First Darwin Class Spaceship Now 'Generating Own Power'

CCA - The first of the Commonwealth's super capital Darwin class spaceship that is under construction is reported to now be generating its own power.

The vessel's reactors were brought online earlier in the week and went critical only a couple of days ago, now after a rigorous series of tests the reactors were declared as safe and fully functional. Construction of the first vessel is deemed to have reached an important milestone, but now that the ship is generating its own power it is expected that work will proceed much more easily.

Though the Commonwealth would continue to develop its rocket technology, but with conventional warheads with a view of creating a screen of interceptor missiles to defend the Commonwealth against ICBM attacks. It is understood that the Royal Morridane Navy's fleet of nuclear powered submarines will remain in service despite the end of their deterrent role, it has been stated that their missile launch capabilities will be retained for the purpose of strategic strikes with conventional missiles.

In his closing statement the Prime Minister highlighted that the Commonwealth's nuclear research programmes would be refocused towards developing Thorium reactors, something that is viewed as being a safer form of nuclear power and would give the Commonwealth breathing room to develop renewable energy based systems for the future.

Empire Issues WMD Declaration

Information has been released by the CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) office of the Ministry of Defence, that the Kingdom of Imbrinium has "very likely" used chemical weapons upon a "warring party" in the ongoing conflict.

The information was released by the MoD having been recorded by specialist equipment housed on the Sanctus Mare Class aircraft carrier HMS Dutiful, currently engaged in anti-shipping operations off the east coast of Stevidian South Greal. This was followed by the live test firing of a nuclear warhead by Stevid on a remote testing island in the south west of the region - although the government has not specified whether this was in response to the use of chemical weapons.

However, the government has now publicly released a declaration outlining how it will perceive further WMD threats from nations the Empire is actively engaged in. The 300 page document outlined several notable points namely the following:

"The Holy Empire will continue to retain a nuclear stockpile in the name of nation defence and interests with the ability to deliver strikes by land, sea, air and space. This Empire believes in that with a deterrence of nuclear weapons, thermonuclear war on a grand scale can ultimately be avoided through the strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction. A term that has saved the world from nuclear oblivion and kept the majority of conflicts at a conventional level."

The declaration further emphasised Stevidian policy on weapons of mass destruction with the following statement:

"While the Empire does possess nuclear weapons as fully capable WMD; on par with Stevidian policy on the full range of WMDs, this Empire refuses to stockpile and arm itself with either chemical, biological or dedicated radiological weapons. Such weapons offer nothing but to target those that are not designated targets and have only uses in attacking the civilian population. Such weapons are barbaric and uncontrollable and cause nothing but pain and anguish to the innocents they target. Such weapons are selfish, used to irradiate opposition forces and foreign civilians while leaving the country's infrastructure intact ripe for conquest."

The declaration continues in this fashion while focusing on individual weapons and detailing the effects they have and why they are banned from military use in the Empire. Interestingly the document admitted the Stevid being in possession of biological and chemical agents but stressed these were not for implementation into the Stevidian military forces and samples were kept for testing for work on filtration systems, vaccinations and CBRN strategies - it further invited World Assembly weapon inspectors to view the laboratories and delivery methods of the Holy Empire as proof Stevid was not hiding the truth and that it only possesses nuclear weapons.

True Intentions

The release of the document has come at a time where Imbrinium has struggle to convince allies to rally to its cause. Stevid maintains a loyal ally in the form of Independent Hitmen and has an unofficial friend in the guise of Malgrave, another nation feeling the brunt of Imbrinium's aggression and the recipient of the chemical attack though the Empire and Malgrave remain unaligned in the conflict. The use of chemical weapons in the conflict represents a major shift away from conventional warfare and into the realms of weapons of mass description, hence the nuclear test by Stevid as to almost remind the Kingdom of what to expect if continued use of these weapons is to continue.

However the neutrality of the Commonwealth of Morrdh has become a growing concern of the Empire. While unsurprising in their stance considering two of their allies are in conflict, the Stevidian government has, on several occasions, expressed passive surprise in the hardness of Morridane politics and diplomacy towards the Empire during the conflict. The recent statement regarding nuclear weapons has been noted by several international and domestic newspapers as Morrdh siding with Imbrinium in regards to the stockpiling of WMDs despite Imbrinium actually using said weapons.

This is likely in line with Morridane policy of nuclear disarmament but concern may be starting to slip into the Stevidian government. Despite this however, Stevidian intent with the declaration is to provide Imbrinium with a "shot across the bow" in regards to WMDs. Stevid has made no secret in its willingness to use nuclear weapons by way of ending conflicts that directly threaten the homeland (as seen in the Second War of Golden Succession), and to prevent further use of weapons of mass destruction against allied states (Steppe Empire Conflict).

The world may watch with baited breath as it is clear that the Empire will not strike first with nuclear weapons unless its hand is forced, but whether it is forced to do so through threat to Stevidian territory or through continued use of WMDs by the enemy is yet to be seen - and cannot be guessed.

Neutrality Reaffirmed Over Growing WMD Concerns

MORRDUN - Her Majesty's Morridane Government reaffirms his stance of armed neutrality as the Stevidian-Imbrinium conflict continues to rage as fears over its possible escalation grow.

In a prepared statement earlier today Prime Minister Edmund Vermillion stressed the Commonwealth's continuing desire to remain neutral in the ongoing conflict between its allies Stevid and Imbrinium. He stated that the Commonwealth does not wish to be dragged into the conflict, but there are concerns over the war's escalation and the use of WMDs. The Prime Minister went onto add that he hopes the conflict would end soon, but he fears the Commonwealth being forced to take action.

In light of a recent Stevidian nuclear test and unconfirmed reports of chemical attacks by Imbrinium forces the Morridane Foreign Office has demanded reassurances from both governments that the conflict will not see the use of any chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. It is understood that the Commonwealth is conducting its own investigation into the affair, if the reports of chemical attacks are proven to be true then it could force the Commonwealth into the conflict against the Kingdom of Imbrinium.

'Cult' Leader To Hang

MORRDUN - After a six week long trial at Morrdun's Hall of Justice, self styled cult leader Lord Kane (real name Alfred Wallace) has been sentenced to hang in a few days time.

Mr Wallace was arrested following the suspicious deaths of a large portion of the cult he led which resulted in him being charged with multiple accounts of manslaughter, but after further investigations Wallace was also charged under the Witchcraft Act 1735. This is the first time that somebody had been charged and tried under the Act since 1931, it has also renewed centuries old call for the Act to be repealed. Ultimately Alfred Wallace was found guilty of a dozen counts of manslaughter and sentenced by His Honourable Judge Morris to death by hanging.

Wallace's hanging is scheduled to take place within the walls of Morrdun's Coldridge Prison at dawn in three days' time.

Atomizya Research Directorate to Redesign Haize Nukes After Sixty Years of Silence

Martian Deep Surface Scanner Begins its Mission

The Stevidian Space Agency (SSA) working closely, but independently, with with Astratii space technicians, have confirmed today that the Martian Deep Surface Scanner (DSS) has arrived safely at Mars.

The probe was launched several weeks ago in the wake of the Holy Empire's first successful manned Lunar landing and is now currently in a polar parking orbit of around 490km above Mars. The mission of the DSS is to survey the surface of Mars in fine grain, hi-definition detail with orbital photographs while also using ground sensors to accurately produce false colour topographic maps in preparation for future landing missions. Further ground penetrating radars and similar sensors are also encased on the probe which will be able to identify minerals and other types of rock that make up the Martian surface. There has been no set limit for this mission duration but sources suggest it could be in excess of twelve years.

The probe also has a built in thruster assembly and will conduct a close-in survey of the local Martian moon Phobos with all sensors to shed more light on the origins and make up of the moon.

The probe also has an additional mission. Unique to this probe is it is carrying onboard six large tanks of fuel which can be used to refuel other probes or manned spacecraft . In essence, the DSS is a refuelling station for future missions to the outer planets of the solar system. This seems to fall in line with the Space Agency's hopes to put an unmanned vehicle and men on the Jovian moon of Europa - one of the greatest enigmas of the solar system and one of the great hopes for humanity's quest to find extraterrestrial life.

For the time being how ever, Mars - one of the most interesting planets to scientists because of its confirmed watery past, is once again under the microscope and Holy Empire is the one uncovering the secrets. This time the minerals that lie beneath the surface will be uncovered unlocking far future potential for mining operations. Until that time however, and until an actual mission to Europa is viable, the DSS will map the surface and scan beneath it.

SSA Release DSS Martian Photographs

Yesterday the Deep Surface Scanner (DSS) entered into a low polar orbit over the Red Planet. This marks the HolyEmpire's first attempt to not only full photograph the planet but to also use ground penetrating sensors to get a detailed look at the rocks and minerals that make up the crust of Mars. The DSS has yet to start this delicate and methodical process which brings potential for future mining operations. In the meantime, the DSS has been busy using it's high definition photography equipment and ground scanners to compile topographical maps and take snap shots of interesting ground features on Mars for the enjoyment of mission control and the public.

Of significance is the grainy and then enhanced photo of a geological feature on Mars that bears a striking resemblance to a Pyramid, this one located in the Elysium Planitia. These Martian 'Pyraminds' have been previously discovered on one of the first probe missions to Mars, the Viking 1 mission in 1976, the photos showed what appeared to be several pyramids localised together with a hill formation slightly northwest bearing a striking resemblance to a humanoid face all located in the region of Cydonia.

The Pyramid in Elysium Planitia is believed to be of similar geological origins of those in Cydonia with the Elysium Planitia known for once having high volcanic and tectonic activity which could be the cause of the uplift in terrain. However what has puzzled Stevidian scientists and xenogeologists is the location of the pyramid in in the plateau itself with few gentle rolling hills but vast flats in all directions with this lone pyramid shaped formation. Baffling as it is, the DSS has deep ground penetrating sensors that will answer all the geological questions surrounding this particular area of Elysium Planitia.

The find has of course fuelled the conspiracy theorists and extraterrestrial believers that this is 'further' evidence of past signs of intelligent life in the solar system and have also pointed at Stevidian Lunar photographs as evidence of this. The SSA and government of the Holy Empire refuse to comment on such wild speculation but the SSA expresses its interest in the potential for life and pledges to continue to the quest to uncover 'legitimate' evidence for it.

Already the SSA has been granted aditional government backing and funding to land a rover vehicle on Mars and continue the Empire's drive for knowledge of other planets in the solar system. This is further evidenced by additional backing to get a manned mission to Europa and Mars in the 'very near future'.

Mission controller and Martian geology expert Dr Jeremy Kiene had this to say about the first images and discoveries of the DSS:

"This is an incredible day for the Stevidian Space Administration, the world's scientific community and the Holy Empire itself. We may not be the first to visit the Red Planet with a probe and we definitely won't be the last. However the technology involved with the DSS that allows it to several many kilometres into the planet's crust and observe its minerals and general composition in exquisite detail is a great feat to accomplish. Initial tests of the equipment's functionality after several months of travel have returned positive results and we are ready to start scanning. These photos and topographic maps, while important and wonderful, are just a secondary mission to the DSS and somewhat of a past time for us mission controllers! The discovery in Elysium Planitia is very exciting and we are quietly proud to fuel public debate in to the geological origins of what we find."

When questioned on future missions that he will be running, including manned missions to Mars and Europa, Dr. Kiene replied:

"To receive additional moral, political and financial backing towards the goal of this Agency is truly heart warming. The quest for knowledge in such a fascinating environment is much sought after and the fact this government shares these goals is tremendous given the current international political situations the Empire finds itself it. It proves we haven't forgotten about the bigger picture that envelopes us all... the cosmos. Our planned rover to mission to Mars will be next using the Terrestrial Lander Vehicle - Rover (TLV-R) that will act as a carrier for the Inquisitive Rover before landing a small distance away and further acting as a science station that will transmit data to Earth en mass. We are further delighted to get the financial backing for a manned mission to Europa and then Mars. Europa will be the biggest test of all and world's first accomplishment - I'm not aware of any nation who has publicly put a human being on that moon. Stevid aims to be the first. Further aspirations are very far flung such as Martian bases and Jupiter space stations... very long term goals but these goals seem to have government support so far!"

The SSA will continue to update the public with the discoveries of the DSS, a probe that has captured the attention and imagination of millions and it has only been orbiting Mars for almost two days!
