For approximately two months, I have been working on a revolutionary new type of FT territorial map. Gone are the days of static images that have a single point of failure (that point being the person who's updating it). Instead, I introduce the Nationstates Galaxy Map.

The image below outlines some of the key features of this map. This isn't a static image, this is a dynamically generated collaborative map that you have control over. It's very simple to use, with a point and click interface. Simply click where you want to place something, insert a few details, and it'll pop up! Editing or deleting your map data is a matter of clicking them and pressing delete.

This map represents two months of development time and over 19,000 lines of code. I expect there will be bugs - that's why there's a "beta" sign. All support, bug reports etc. should be posted in this thread. For the alliance colours mode, if I've missed your FT alliance, simply tell me and I'll include it.

All are welcome to use this map, but please don't abuse the privilege.

The map has been tested in Firefox 2.x, 3.x and Chrome. It works in all of these. It does not work in Opera or any version of Internet Explorer. Opera support may be forthcoming but IE support is off the cards due to the complicated SVG rendering involved.

This is the final reason I'll begin participating FT.

Three of the entries thus far have chosen white as there marker colour. I suggest each choose as distinct a colour as possible. Also, the legend will get cluttered soon and as a result, something must be done about it soon.

EDIT: Now others have chosen a colour that is very near identical to my own.

I've noticed a lot of people choosing colours for their nation that are very similar to those already on the key. If possible, try to avoid this, because it makes distinguishing things harder! It's also a good idea to make at least one of your systems a homeworld. You can then filter the map by going to options -> view only homeworlds so the map becomes instantly less cluttered. In this mode, enabling labels also helps in identification.

I may sound like a noob but how do you use it

You need to zoom in to Sector View first, which is accomplished by clicking any point on the galaxy map, which is what loads by default. Once there, click and begin placement; fill in all the details on the form which pops up. First system, done.

This is a masterpiece! I have a little suggestion: perhaps a scale measured in light years may help.

I'll implement that soon. I've just fiddled with the key rendering code, it should display better on more screen resolutions now.
