1) Didnt guess. The Panzergale and Cerberus did their research.

2) More hazardous material would have exploded in the other direction.

3) So...you waste a nuke (WHICH YOU CANT BUY OR BUILD WITH YOUR CURRENT ECONOMY)...to incinerate satellites....when a regular missile can do the same?
Not to mention most of those satellites are military satellites with Anti-Missile weapons. They could have destroyed your weapons without a problem.

Also, by detonating a nuke in space you're pretty much guaranteeing a bunch of angry countries breathng down your neck. Remember that every nation's satellites are in orbit, and they could be anywhere around the earth at any given moment. Even if you were to target one of our satellites (keyword: one,) you wouldn't be able to control the collateral to other nations' satellites. And detonating a nuke in space really won't have any impact on the environment, tbh.
