The Republic of the Rio Bravo secedes (OPEN, PT)

Postby The Rio Bravo » Sun Apr 24, 2011 5:36 pm

OOC: This topic is past tech and set in 1840.

January 17, 1840
Oreveña Ranch near Laredo
Mexico

A meeting takes place with a number of officials from the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo León. A letter sent to all nations of the world.

'Today marks a new era for the people of North Mexico free from the oppression of the Mexican government. We stood by General Antonio López de Santa Anna in his ambition to establish a federal government for Mexico after decades of strife and bloodshed but he has shown his true colours and has betrayed us by creating a centralised government. Therefore the free states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo León hereby secede from the United Mexican States and declares its independance as a free and federal republic.

We are currently drafting a constitution based upon that of the USA and of Mexico.

We claim the lands of the current states as well as southern Tejas (Texas) including all land south of the San Antonio River, San Antonio itself, San Jacinto and Golaid. These shall mark the Northern border of our new republic. Our republic shall be named after the mighty river that flows through its centre, the Rio Bravo (Rio Grande). So today marks the formation of the Republic of the Rio Bravo, República del Río Bravo. The city of Laredo shall be our capital.

The Republic of the Rio Bravo also establishes its own government, so far this is a transistional government until further elections can be arranged:
    * Jesús de Cárdenas - President.
    * Antonio Canales - Commander-in-chief of the army.
    * Juan Nepomuceno Molano - Council representative for Tamaulipas.
    * Francisco Vidaurri y Villaseñor - Council representative for Coahuila.
    * Manuel María de Llano - Council representative for Nuevo León.
    * José María Jesús Carbajal - Council secretary.

We ask all nations of the world to support our right to independance and to aid us if need be. We shall fight for our right to stand as a free nation.

Signed,
Jesús de Cárdenas, President of the Republic of the Rio Bravo.'

January 18th 1840
Mexico City
Mexico
Presidential Office

President Antonio López de Santa Anna sat at the long oak wood table that occupied his majestic office in the heart of the capital building in Mexico City. The noon sun shone through the glass windows and bathed the room in a soft, white glow. The President sat and put a pipe to his mouth, in front of him stood numerous stacks of paper. The joys of running a state.

Beside the paper stood a small glass of whiskey which he picked up and admired for some time. The light brown liquid reflected the Suns rays as it fluttered slighty at the Presidents touch. He put it to his lips and quickly gulped it down before slamming the glass back onto the hard surface of the table. He put his hand to his mouth and coughed as the strong smelling liquid burnt his throat.

He had held the Presidency for 2 years now and it had taken its toll. Mexico was an unstable and dangerous place at the time made worse by the President's unpopular move to centralise the government. The growing power of the USA in the north provided an ever increasing problem and the secessionist movements which had sprung up around the country were causing him severe heartache. The Republic of Texas was his biggest concern but not his only. He had not weeks ago sent an army down south to quell a rebellion in the southern states. Moments later the door at the far end of his office opened.

'President López , General Mariano Arista has just arrived.' As the secretary finished speaking General Arista strode into the office. His uniform was clean and his medals and buckles shone magnificently in the Mexican Sun. His boots had been highly polished and although they bore the marks of a hard ride to get here the President admired the Generals overall appearance. Mariano reached the edge of the rug which spread from the table to about half way down the room. He gave a chrisp calute and said.

'General Mariano Arista ready for duty sir.'

'Ahh General, I have heard much about you, you are just the man I am after, please take a seat.' The President motioned to a small wooden chair on the opposite side of the table. The General hesitantly sat down. 'I have heard rumours General, I'm sure you have also, of rebellion in the north. Have you?'

'I have Sir, as you said, only rumours.'

'Well let me assure you General, they are not rumours but that is for your ears only, we don't want that kind of information leaking out into the common farmers knowledge. They call themselves the Republic of the Rio Grande, they sent me this letter, it arrived this morning.' The President took another puff of his pipe while pushing the paper towards the General. 'As you can see it is a letter of secession, they have rebelled against the government. That is were you come in. As of this moment they are still weak and small and seeking aid. We must nip this rebellion in the bud General. You are to take an army north and attack them from the south. Aim for Laredo, their capital.'

The General looked at the President 'Erm, yes sir.'

'These people are rebels, I have already dealt with enough of them during my time in office and still the people do not get the idea that rebellion is bad for their health. A notable example is that a few of the rebels are ex military personal. Their army commander is one Antonio Canales, I believe you two know each other.'

'Yes sir, we served together during the revolution.'

'Excellent, then you know the man. As it is with rebels you will find support within their ranks. Many in the state governments have not aligned themselves with the rebels and have called us to aid them. They shall be your first port of call. I have also managed to contact a few rebel personal, some are willing to cooperate. Its funny what a few pesos can achieve nowadays. Now that is enough chat, you have work to do. I want you ready and moving by March. Understood?'

'Yes sir.' The General saluted and left, the sound of his boots echoing throughout the room. The President sat back and closed his eyes, problem dealt with.
