If you're buying off him you can only lose money. If he's buying off you, you're earning money. I thought you were buying off him.

Actually no, it failed it all of its objectives. It was supposed to be able to take on the Dollar and it faltered from day one. It jacked up prices in lots of places where they couldn't really afford it (see places such as the Canary Islands) failed to ever really catch up to the Pound and Dollar and was just one massive fail because Germany forgot that funnily enough, a single interest rate is impossible to maintain when it only really benefits Germany.
If you are going to let poorly managed countries such as the PIIGS into your currency, you need to let them have control over interest rates so that they can make a half assed attempt at controlling their poor decisions.
The Euro is just another addition to the long and embarrassing list of EU failings.
And the pound isn't that strong. it has taken a big knock recently, but I think it is the only thing relatively capable of keeping up with the Dollar.

Although I agree, it did make some areas even pricier, it hasn't failed.
True, it hasn't taken on the Dollar, and probably won't, but it is the world's biggest contender against the dollar, and other than the dollar, it is the most common pegged with currency...
Finally, the EU, although it isn't a perfect organization, has turned the Eastern European nations into first world nations, and changed them from their communist pasts...Although, they aren't exactly the best, it has helped them greatly...There is a reason why more Eastern European nations keep joining, slowly, but they are joining non-the-less.
Again, true, the Pound is a strong currency, and it is a contender against the Dollar, it isn't as important as the Euro globally, because, well the UK alone doesn't have the international clout necessary to do so...Not anymore anyway...

Portugal has JUST applied for a bailout. Not very fine if its members need Germany to bail them out.
The Eastern European nations are joining because they need the free access to the Western Markets to help themselves grow, but we don't need them. They are the only ones who benefit from EU membership, but are paying the price as their democratic freedoms are slowly eroded.
Also, the Euro is able to enjoy claims of global usage because together Western Europe would have the worlds biggest economy. However it is doomed to failure because the Germans are rightly sick and tired of bailing out the PIIGS, because if every time Greece or Spain says "Woops, cant pay our debts" and Germany whips out the cheque book, then there is no need for them to improve because the good ol' German tax payers will pick up the bill.
The pound Sterling is like top 5 in terms of trading currency and 3rd in reserve currency behind the Euro and Dollar which fits in with the UK's economic ranking. As I said the Euro is so highly traded because the 4th, 5th and 7th biggest economies in the world use it and together make a bigger combined GDP than China and Japan.
