Medieval Tech OOC thread (Spaces available!)

REOPENED:

Spaces are reopenning in this Roleplay! See the current map if you're interested.

The current steps for signing up are:

1) Make a factbook.
2) Get involved in a IC thread
3) Make a Claim on the map, and link the factbook + IC thread.
4) I'll add you to the RP

A few things to bear in mind:

Technology is at 1300AD level, with no gunpowder available.

We are not using insane NS populations. I am thinking nothing bigger than 5-10 million per a nation. Larger nations should have certain disadvantages, although currently I cant think of any ha.

I have a map, shamelessly stolen from google images.

Map v22

Map comparison to Europe:

Image

Mapworking will quickly become hardwork...We'll need one for every tactical situation and more strategical ones for invasions...A cartographer would really help!

Simply Amazing World map by Rahiendaishar (Orthenia):

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3738/worldmap.png

I am told a map similiar to the original continent map is coming, so as to make claims easier etc.

Don't produce a perfect army/nation. Remember weakness's are what make things interesting.

Elite units...Each nation will probably have one type. For me I'm thinking Throwing Axemen. Be imaginative!

Realism: typical NS rules, no million man armies, think about logistics, don't declare war on a whim etc...You get the point

Add me on msn oldirishgeezer@hotmail.com

Anyways who's interested?

Semantics isn't it? Considering these are all fictional nations etc...My canon changes all the time it's not even canon anymore.

Eitherway...its upto you. Using your own account nation does generally help in avoiding confusion though.

edit unless I'm an idiot and you mean actual history :P.

I'm sort of interested in this idea. I'm assuming based on the map that this has no way to affect our canon nations.

I'd be interested in playing as an East Asian nation (cough Japan cough)

Timeline?

Starting from 1300, time would flow with flexibility between posts, but there would be no actual 'progression' if you know what I mean i.e. there wouldn't be technological advances etc.

Unless the rp went on for a reeeeeeeeeeeealllly long time :P.

Count me in. I'd like to think of myself as a cartographer, but I'm quite lazy, so... Not sure if I could neccesarily be helpful on that front.

Anyway, as far as "Elite Units" go, I could think of a lot of different things, since I've fleshed out a lot of the character of my nation through its history, and all of the provinces are very distinct, and such... Though were I to choose just one I'd say Otromon Corsairs, or maybe Aethelayan Trackers.

Though, I do have one possible issue... Is that map that you linked to be the playing field? I already have maps of Jimanistan drawn (by my own clumsy hand, as can be seen in my factbook), and wouldn't be able to work it on to that map... In that case, I'd have to have Jimanistan engage in colonialism, or hire out soldiers to a country that is on the map, or something like that...

Im interested. I would have to RP as the fictional nation that my nation spawned from, which is Nova Britannianica, but i could definately do this. My mothernation i guess would have a decently equipped and sized military, and a pretty decent fleet, with my "Superunits" of the time being Swordsman with those 2 Handed Swords(name if anyone knows it), Longbowmen, and various other heavy and light Swordsman.

I'm interested. Go Trebuchets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Edit: Woops, i forgot to mention that i'll have to play as the Great Empire, the faction that Altergo fought to get it's independence, because it had medival tech in 200 BCE, but Altergo was founded during 1345 AD when gunpowder had already been invented.

Note:The Great Empire lived in an Alternate History where the Library of Alexandria wasn't destroyed

Count me in! pretty sweet lookin' map, by the way. I think this one has the potential to be very intruiging. The more primitive the tech, the better, so I'm glad there's no gunpowder, cannons, etc.

@Jimanistan and USPA: I'm pretty sure this doesn't have to be "NS Historically" accurate. You don't have to use your actual nation. For instance, I'd be taking probably one of the northern island areas and call that Kagetora, even though Kagetora already has set boundaries in NS-Canon.

@Frozopia: If I were to play as a Japanese knock-off, could I assume that samurai are the equivalent of knights, and don't count as my unique units? Because if I have to have pretty much all of my people as unique units, I'm not interested.

Put me down as interested as well. Note: while I'm familiar with the basics of Medieval technology, I'm not exactly an expert. What level of expertise is this going to require?

As far as canon is concerned, I've got little concern: my canon is ill-defined, and I tend to make it up when as I go.

I think I'll use the same combination I used for an old fantasy RP on the Jolt forums, minus the magic. Ie, Romanesque legions backed by Longbowmen.

Very interesting, I'll definitely join in.

I'd be playing as an Alexandrian Greek-style empire, probably based upon Ptolemaic Egypt. I haven't quite decided what their special unit will be yet, but they'd probably be hoplites, though if allowed, perhaps a little bit of Greek fire wouldn't be too bad. So many choices...

Also, I'd like to volunteer my services as a mapmaker to the thread, I'll hopefully be able to keep up with the mountain of tasks in the Mapmaking thread and this one, but I'm optimistic. :)

I always was interested in a realistic Medieval Tech RP, although it's a pity that I'll have to go with a sort of Hussite kingdom instead of going with Prazinia's predecessor called "The Kingdom of God", which was formed in 1524 AD when gunpowder already was commonplace.

I'd really love to integrate this, somehow, to Prazinia's past story.

Now, is there going to exist any equivalent to the Catholic Church / Holy Roman Empire regarding influence and power? Prazinia will be an early protestant kingdom in this RP, probably Hussite, like I mentioned, and nothing like facing a greater power.

If theres enough demand, and people stick it out, then this map may only represent one continent of a world in which you can base your main country.

Either way one or two of those islands are probably too small for any nations but they could perhaps be a base of operations for your colonising army...mhmmmm interestingness abound.

Yeah thats fine so long as the samurai aren't too numerous (for example in a large army force of maybe 20,000? I would probably have about 400 knights acting as heavy cavalry). Not all Medieval japanese people were samurai obviously.

Ah not too much. Everyone can help each other out, but a bit of research maybe necessary every now and again.

There could maybe be a Catholic church, but a Holy roman empire would have to be some player driven equivalent.

Anyways guys if you are interested write up a factbook and make a claim on the map. A factbook, as I'm sure most of you know, should include a brief description of your country including organisation, terrain, weather, culture and armed forces.

Also a lot of people are claiming the ever popular longbowmen...There should never be too many of these guys, there is a crazy amount of training involved in their production (10 years of strength training really, making them irreplaceable) and it really requires a certain culture for them to come about....In many ways they are an elite unit all by themselves (although i will not consider them as such) I may make case-by-case decisions to restrict their numbers or even outright ban them.

count me in.

and fear not, for those who are familiar with such things: there shall be no hawks, boom tubes, or acid-grenade-wielding-pseudo-ninja :)

might want to check out what's going on with the Samurai in 1300 there... they started life as horse archers, after all, and went through several variations before you got to their most knight like. [during the war before japan went isolationist for a while, a lot of them apparently carried guns as their primary weapon when going to war]

my elite guys are probably going to be heavily armored halbardeers.

i suppose i should do up a fact book.

oh, and on the subject of cannon: Angermanland doesn't really Have cannon. though it is refined in every iteration :D side effect of being present in many different 'world's
