I appreciate the nomination but cannot accept. I’d be potentially open to it in the future but I don’t feel I have enough experience or time to do a good job at the moment. So thank you, but I decline.

You have for more experience than myself at it. I accepted my own nomination if at all else to let the GenSec have a pool of candidates rather than have one win by default.

What do community members think of this? The main objection internally to moving back to five has been the belief that GenSec with five members is less productive and less active. In light of this year's heavy case load – with 10 cases, where only one actively involved all six members, – does the community believe this to be true?

Edit. Some may see this – "where only one actively involved all six members" – as a bit of a shocking claim. But you can confirm this using https://bit.ly/gensec-catalogue. The statistic is even more pronounced when expanding the window over the last four years back to 2020. That one case where all six members participated (Reducing food contaminants and residues [2024] GAS 1 which ended up being a tie) is the only case in that range. You have to go back to [2019] GAS 2 to find the last instance where all six members participated.

Image

There have been, in total, 66 GenSec cases of which 11 involved all six members (mostly concentrated in 2016–17).

As you point out, GenSec has been effectively operating as if it has fewer than six members to begin with. Even with an eye to the possibility that GenSec can only be as active as it is, with four or more members voting on most challenges, due to its current size, it does not, in fact, appear to be the case. The ability of GenSec to be as active as it is is not maintained through the swapping in and out of members, but by certain members maintaining an active role in GenSec. Additionally, it has also never made clear sense to me that GenSec should have an even number of members. Given the dearth of candidates who are both available and experienced, with one or two exceptions, I do not see any harm in leaving GenSec as it is and letting the applicant pool grow in preparation for when another member is actually direly needed.

I was under the impression that the size of GenSec was something that was out of GenSec's hands, but if that isn't the case I would absolutely support a drop down to five members.
First Minister of The Communist Bloc.

This sums up my thoughts fairly well, with a slight caveat that the two most recently resolved challenges were resolved with 4 members (Repeal "Concerning Financial Fraud") and 3 members, but with one member explicitly abstaining (Repeal "Volcanic Activity Convention"), meaning that at least one member has also not been present. Only GenSec can accurately comment on this but I could see how one semi-inactive member (even if they still qualify for being on the council in the first place) may necessitate another member.

But I do think an arbitrary minimum of 6 is silly at best and harmful at worst.

I would be in favor of dropping down to 5 as well. Unless current GenSec do not believe they themselves will be active in upcoming months is numbers to postpone challenges to after the holiday season.

As Tin suggested, I very much doubt that GenSec has any say in their size at this time.
A lonely soul in a room by itself weeping. It lives for eighty years and then it's gone. And then it's there again. A reprieve. A good life. Love, children, a steady career. Recognition from your peers. Here one moment, gone the next. The worms have found their orifices. Diagnosis. It forgets everything it is. Anger. Rage. Distance. Poverty. The lonely soul is lonely again. Love turns to mockery. It dies. It is reborn. Worse. Lonelier.

Maowi hasn't posted here in a year and a half. You're obviously free to nominate whomever you wish, but do consider whether you think they would actually be good for the job.

I have already declined last month.

Also I actually also declined when this post (the seat Kenmoria vacated) came up back in November 2023.
