" Anyway, enough talk. Let's see if this is still as good as it was those years ago. Cups out. " said Williams as he took the lid off and started pouring the whiskey.

Williams poured everyone a drink then did himself, then put the half full bottle back in the bag.

" Cheers. " he said out loud, lifting his glass up a bit.

"My father seems to have known Mr. van Oosten's father. He was a Captain in the Navy that fought in the colonial wars here on Robbeneiland. After the war he resigned from the service and never wanted to talk about it. According to my father he never wanted a single word about not even to his son. "

"I don't think he hid. I think he just saw some stuff here that he couldn't cope with. It is said that Mr. van Oosten is a lot like his father and he himself surely is not a coward." Cole finished his whiskey.

"In those days they thought differently. Luckily I know a bit about this subject as I had an uncle that was a military historian. Just down the road from where we are now 17 men were executed in 1940 for "cowardice in the face of the enemy." Which is, as you realise, not something that was taken light-heartedly.
We don't have that law anymore though."

"In those days, of course, people knew less about psychology and blamed it on a weak character.. thinking that it somehow could affect the morale of the entire regiment.. of an entire army even. So they were quick to set examples. They called it "Shot at dawn" as those condemned were always shot in the early morning and they made the entire regiment watch. It's still quite something that it took them three years and over a 10.000 deaths to subdue the islands here."

"As long as it doesn't get as bad as it used to be back then." Cole looked outside for a moment to the men "Still to think about.. that we still use the same punishments as we did back then... Military law never changes, I suppose."
