New Parliament Elected!

Postby Zarbli » Fri Nov 19, 2010 5:26 am

After many years in the leadership of the 3 Stars Party and, by extent, of Zarblese government, the Minister of the People (PM) Luis Dasilva decided to retire after his second 4 years term, opening new general elections to the parliament.

Mr. Dasilva's government made of Zarbli a large welfare state, with a high social equality, but also an enormous tax rate. With this parliament's mandate's over, King Emmett I is once again calling elections.

The five parties:

The 3 Stars Party
Center-Left/Socialist
Current percentage in the Assembly: 31%
Leader: Chief of Staff Dilma F. Rusef
Economy: Free market with state regulation
Power: Centralized
Environment: Development first, environment second
Welfare State: Yes
Civil Rights: Very important
Big State: Yes
External Politics: Extremelly pacifist
The current majority party is very popular among the poorest in Zarbli, but the wealthier and more educated criticize its wealth distribution policies, calling them "government allowance", and the party's criticism of the press.

The Sword and Shield Party
Far Right/Conservative
Current percentage in the Assembly: 28%
Leader: Chief Tonim M. Magaliaens
Economy: Free market
Power: Centralized
Environment: Not important
Welfare State: No
Civil Rights: Important
Big State: divided
External Politics: Aggressive
The largest opposition party comes from the ranks of old Zarblese nobility, and believes that the role of the government is to allow the people to do well by themselves, having a more foreign oriented look than inward.

The Eagle Party
Center-Right/Social-Democracy
Current percentage in the Assembly: 21%
Leader: Governor Jose F. Seha
Economy: Free Market
Power: Decentralized
Environment: Important
Welfare State: divided
Civil Rights: Very important
Big State: No
External Politics: Pacifist
The favourite of the intellectuals and the press, this party has academics and enterpreneurs amongst their leaders. Their main platform is a vast reduction of the role of the government, with more power to each constituent nation than to the central power.

The Sun Party
Far Left/Comunist
Current percentage in the Assembly: 14%
Leader: Representative Plinio S. Ahuda
Economy: State controlled
Power: Centralized
Environment: Very important
Welfare State: Yes
Civil Rights: Not important
Big State: Yes
External Politics: Aggressive
The Sun Party thinks the only fair society is a society where the State regulates every aspect of it. The people tends to only think about what is best for themselves; the State should see that they have what is best for everyone.

The Tree Party
Center/Green
Current percentage in the Assembly: 7%
Leader: President Marina S. Acriana
Economy: Free Market with state regulation
Power: Decentralized
Environment: Very important
Welfare State: divided
Civil Rights: Very important
Big State: divided
External Politics: Pacifist
The Tree party has changed radically from a populist to a green party. The party's leader is a favourite of students and younger people, being regarded as an ethical and progressive politician. Their main platform is the protection of environment and pursue of greener economic ways.

IC: The Armed Federation of Xenohumanity officially endorses the Sun Party.

OOC: In RL, I'd probably go with The Sword & Shield Party.

DEBATE

A debating envolving the leaders of the five parties took place last night in Vegas, one of the largest cities of the West region.

In the debate, Dilma Rusef of the 3 Stars Party defended all the achievements of the party's government of the past 8 years. According to her, never before Zarbli had such an igualitarian society, with such extent of wealth distribution. She defended the tax rate, stating that without taxing the wealthy, it's impossible to guarantee access to good education and health for the poorest. She also defended the government's controversial political alliances, saying that it's not possible to govern by yourself. She said that the only way to keep growing and distributing wealth is voting for the 3 Stars Party's reelection.
GOOD: Most the people really is happy about the current govern politics.
BAD: Her charisma is close to 0

Tonim Magaliaens of the Sword and Shield Party criticized harshly the wealth distribution program of the government, stating that it's only a way to make people more and more dependendt of the government's help. He said also that, if it weren't for his party, Zarbli would still be an easy prey for foreign threats, citing the still recent Goinderean invasion of 12 years ago. He said he would immediatly cut taxes to boost industrial and agrarian enterprises, and use the surplus to modernize the Army.
GOOD: He is sure confident and looks like he knows what he's talking about.
BAD: Every phrase sounds arrogant and father-knows-best.

Jose F. Seha of the Eagle Party defended cuts in the government's staff, saying that the best way to have things done is not by hiring more people, but instead to hire specialized companies that will do the job more properly. He said he would invest in infrastructure projects such as railways, dams and airports, projects to benefit all Zarbli, leaving matters like education, security and health in the hads of each constituent nation of the kingdom. He also caused some fuzz after saying that "federalism is the more republican way", not a nice thing to say when you are in a monarchy.
GOOD: He looks serious and has good rational points.
BAD: Looks like a mixture of a vampire and a pedophile teacher.

Plinio Ahuda of the Sun Pary was one of the high points of the debate, specially for his (some would say dark) sense of humour. He criticized almost every other party, saying that their proposed solutions were "children's games", that they would never solve the real problems of the country. He asked some tricky questions like "You're saying you'll solve this the same way you did in your nation? I was there last week, and I saw none of that" or "Please, how is THAT going to be different from what we already have?" He defended radical changes in the way the government deals with almost everything, defending that Zarbli can do a lot better if it just stops caring so much about what everyone thinks and do the hard things that have to be done.
GOOD: Interesting (and funny) questions that no one else had the guts to ask
BAD: come on, no one wats to sacrifice for the well being of their grandchildren's generation

Last but not least, Marina Acriana of the Tree Party argued that politics cannot be done the way it is now, with this much corruption, schemes, lobbyists' influence and specially disregard for the environment. She defended more modern economic politics like the developement of greener energy sources, environment friendly agrarian politics and investments in high technology products. She also argued in favour of reducing drastically the funding of the army and applying all this money in education. "Do you want your children to become uneducated killers or educated people that really care about others?"
GOOD: The best speaker of the bunch.
BAD: Sounded a little too much of an idealist

Following these debates, and the clarification of the stances of the parties, Xenohumanity officially changes it's endorsement to the Sword and Shield Party. Military development is a must, whether it is to defend against neighbors or maintain a peace of arms.

The Religion Issue

The Three Stars Party leader Dilma Rusef, brought to the political debate last night the oldest issue of all: religion. In an announcement in the Party's television program, she has stated that, "unlike some of the candidates you see in this country, I've always been an advocate of the separation between church and State. Zarbli is a multicultural Union and has no space for such people in the government."

This speech caused a great deal of debate amongst the parties.

The Sword and Shield Party released a note saying that "Inspite of what some frightened opponents might say, the Sword & Shield Party's main concern is to properly address the issues that have been endangering the situation of our great country, all based in the greatest ethics that we and the Zarblese people know: the ethics of God, whatever religion each person follows. We are not ashamed of being humbled by a Greater Power. Our opponents should also be humbled by Him."

Jeraldo A. Pikoledexuxu, the main articulator of the Eagle Party campaign, stated that "Yes, [party leader Joze] Seha is a God fearing man, he goes to church every Sunday and yes, he has a close relationship with the Catholic Church, but that doesn't mean he will mix one thing with another. If you want a Believer in office, you should vote for him, but if you want a capable administrator, you should do it as well. And with the bless of the Lord he will be the MP for the next years."

Plinio Ahuda, leader of the Sun Party just said "Are you kiddin' me? This is a joke! The woman [referring to ms. Rusef] just want to diverge the attention of the stuff that goes on in her party's administration, and so does all the other parties that goes along with this nonsense argument" When asked if he believed in God, he said "Never met him."

Even though a known and fierce Neo-Penthecostal, the Tree Party Leader has surprised some analysts when she commented that "My personal beliefs have nothing to do with what our country needs. Take abortion for example: I may be pro life, but this should be treated as a Public Health issue, not a morality one. If we just stop trying to judge the morality of everything and try to deal with it more practically, mayb then we will be able to decrese the ridiculously high illegal abortion rates in the larger urban areas."

New Parliament Elected!

After 8 years of 3 Star Party socialist government, the people of Zarbli chose to take the country to a new direction for the next 4 years. The people elected the neo-liberalist Eagle Party as the majority Pary in the People's Assembly, followed by the conservative Sword and Shield Party in second. The two right wing parties will form a new government under Joze F. Seha, Eagle's leader and new Minister of the People.

The Eagle Party won 72 seats out of 200 in the Assembly, almost twice what they had in the previous configuration. With the 52 of the Sword and Shield, they have nothing less than 62% of the votes in the House. The left wing parties, Three Stars and Sun Parties ended with 34 and 18 seats respectivelly, barely half of what they had in the previous government.

Another big winner was the Tree Party, once the smallest of the 5 with only 14 seats, they now almost doubled this number with 26 seats. They are expected to vote with the government in some business related issues, but are believed to be a fierce opposition when it comes to the environment.
