(( Subtopia is an ongoing worldbuilding project since January 2018, originally started on NationStates, comprising the nations of Adrionis, Diablo Blanca and Moskochev.
ICly, it rests within the Caucasus region between Eastern Europe and Asia, and included within its boundaries is a melting pot of many tongues, beliefs and cultures.


The overall universe itself can best be described as "alt-history in the Rockstar Games/Mafia universe style."


Having taken many forms over the years, the current inspiration for Subtopia's worldbuilding style lies somewhere between Rockstar Games and Tolkien, with a heavy emphasis on 20th/21st century dystopian reality concepts.
It's a land embittered with racial and religious hatred, a bloodthirsty and impoverished working class, political corruption and deadly power schemes.


The future of Subtopia has been determined, and mostly centers around the exploits of antichrist-like figure Nikolai Kalinov of Moskochev, as well pursuits made to stop him...
mostly by The Maccaviti, an international ESP intelligence organization without borders, consisting of agents Chloe Hill, Vincent Torelli, Korra Flir and Adam Harrow.


This specific thread focuses on the international politics of the Subtopian region during the 1980s,
including the 1984 Moskochevian Conflict, also known as the Black Friday War.

Draconis, Adrionis

King Arthoúros Giaffri IV, also anglicized to Arthur Geoffrey, sits in his wood-paneled office in the King's Palace building in Draconis. Word has just been received from the southeastern peninsula district of Alardia... over 5,000 troops belonging to the neighboring People's Republic of Moskochev have stormed the shores, occupying much of metropolitan Alardia City. As of yet, no formal declaration of war has been issued by Moskochev, and this is being treated as a surprise attack.


Moskochev is a one-party state, ruled by Communist Party General Secretary Alexey Izpepla. Originally a subject of the Russian Empire, the land later came under the control of the Moskovite tribe during the twelfth century. It was ruled as a kingdom by the House of Kalinin until December 1934, when the Moskochevian Communist Party (MCP) overthrew the monarchy in what became known as the Scarlet Night Revolution.


Despite the new government, the Moskochevian claim to the entirety of Subtopia remains a constant factor in their international policy. Originally practiced by the steppe warriors of the imperial era, it continues until the modern day - 1984 - as evident by the March 9th invasion.


The United Kingdom of Diablo Blanca, bordering Adrionis and Moskochev to the northwest, is a parliamentary monarchy and state that originally belonged to Adrionis. Beginning in the 1400s as a revolutionary movement led by French and Spanish traders who sought to establish a new land, it gained its independence in 1714 following a violent rebellion against the unpopular and tyrannical King Cisco II of Adrionis.


Diablo Blanca has existed since 1714 as a parliamentary monarchy, led by the royal Lafitte-Montecarlo family. The powers of the Diablo Blancan monarchy are limited, except in times of international war... because of this, kings are trained since birth to be master tacticians.


Adrionis' history began in the early 1200s, following a series of peasant revolutions in the northwest Ilkhanate. European crusader mercenaries (mostly consisting of Greeks and Germans) used this opportunity to unite the peasant villages into a de facto state of the Holy Roman Empire in 1241, known as Adrionia, and shield the region from the Mongolians.


Following Adrionia's swift decay into anarchy several years later, a warrior known only as Herold of Bavaria launched a new revolution, re-uniting the Adrionian states in 1260, and declaring himself absolute ruler.


The Kingdom of Adrionis and the Seven Realms (Draconia, the Black Forest, the Old Coast, the Taurian Steppes, Northwest Adrionis, Mosko-Caspia, and the Hulegun Shore) was ruled by two royal houses, House of Herold-Carpathos and House of Cisco, until Cisco II's deposition in late-1714, which plunged the country into three decades of darkness.


In 1745, Adrionis was re-established as a total monarchy to be ruled only by the house of Herold-Carpathos, with an elected representative government who's functions consisted of spreading the voice of the commoners, aiding the king in domestic policy, and deciding a new monarch from a bloodline list.


The current predicament is one not unknown to the denizens of Subtopia. It has historically been the Moskochevian belief that all Subtopian land should belong to their empire... the notion of which is spreading rapidly among the top, informed brass of the Adrionian government, in speculation of why these attacks took place.


Surely, Adrionis thinks, the Moskochevians will come up with a more sound explanation to the international community.

* Alexey Izpepla, the Moskochev Communist Party (MCP) General Secretary sits in his office in the Imperial Palace building in the Old City district of Shiroka. The sound of gas-guzzling mid-century Soviet cars can be heard outside, as their heavily treaded tires pass over ancient cobblestones.

Alexey fiddles with a Cuban cigar, eyeing his own reflection in a highball glass of vodka which rested on his heavy wooden desk. Suddenly, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Fedorov bursts through the door, standing at attention. He carries a heavy black leather portfolio under his arm.

The duo begin conversing in Moskochevian, an Eastern Slavic language.

Alexey Izpepla says: "At ease, Lieutenant Colonel. Now... what is it?"

Ivan Fedorov says: "I've been ordered to notify you, sir... the fleet has broken through to Adrionian waters without any resistance. We believe initial reports of there being no prior knowledge of the attack are true."

* Alexey Izpepla takes a long drag from his cigar, the crinkling paper echoing throughout the room. He shifts his gaze to the wall - hanging upon it, a portrait of Moskochevian revolutionary Ivan Nechayev, of the Scarlet Night Revolution. He looks back at Ivan, before replying.

Alexey Izpepla says: "And what of resistance on the ground?"

Ivan Fedorov says: "So far, our ground forces have been able to take much of the districts of Alardia City which border the shore. Initial resistance from local police... which was quickly overpowered. There have also been reports of small-arms fire, probably militiamen... but as of yet, it seems not even their king knows of this attack."

Alexey Izpepla says: "They will, Fedorov... and when they do come, what then?"

Ivan Fedorov says: "Artillery installations have already been established in key positions..."

* Ivan Fedorov pulls a map of the Alardian Peninsula from his portfolio, resting it on Izpepla's desk. He begins pointing to locations with a Sharpie.

Ivan Fedorov says: "With the heavy artillery pieces we acquired from our international partners, the invasion force should be able to rain hellfire upon any personnel or armored division trapped within the range of its guns."

* Alexey Izpepla looks over the map, nodding gently as he tokes on his cigar.

Alexey Izpepla says: "How long until we take the entire peninsula?"

Ivan Fedorov says: "That depends on how quick Adrionis is to respond, sir."

The War in Moskochev: The Story So Far

Following decades of tension between Adrionis and Moskochev, a conflict erupted after firefights on Adrionis' border with Moskochev earlier this year, resulting in several Moskochevian civilian casualties. On March 9th, a land invasion was launched in Adrionis' southern peninsula (also known as the Alwarda or Alardia region), apparently in reprisal to the civilian casualties.

Moskochevian troops pushed upwards through Alardia, with a decisive battle occurring between March 21st and March 25th in Adith Harbor, a port city about 65 miles south of Alardia City. The event later came to be known as the Battle of Adith Valley. Naval support was provided by the HMS Draconis (AD-17), captained by Nick Bovi, and the HMS Exeter (AF-87), captained by Jon Sheckles.

On March 26th, the Adrionian Navy encountered several Moskochevian warships on route to the Occupied Zone of the peninsula, and a battle in the ocean ensued. Among the Adrionian ships lost include the flagship HMS Draconis and the battleship HMS Exeter (AF-87), and the deaths of captains Bovi and Sheckles. The survivors were then transported onto land, and temporarily re-assigned as reserve ground units for the Adrionian Royal Army near the combat zone.

A full-scale invasion of Moskochev's southern sea border began on April 2nd, 1984. Adrionian forces consisting of both the reserve units as well as regular infantry stormed the beaches of Moskochev, quickly claiming land approximately 10 miles inland. The Moskochevian government had not anticipated the attack.

The initial battle, dubbed "The Battle of Black Tuesday", lasted two and a half days and resulted in hundreds of casualties for both sides, but ultimately resulted in Moskochevian forces being pushed back about 15 miles inland. According to sources present at the conflict, Adrionis made heavy use of white phosphorous and napalm attacks from air units.

On April 5th, a procession into Moskochevian-occupied territory was launched. Over a thousand infantry stormed into the marshy forests of southwest Moskochev, and were ultimately met with heavy resistance. The town of Sokolov was the bloodiest battleground, and was leveled by both napalm attacks from Adrionis, as well as "carpet shelling" from Moskochev's heavy use of artillery. The town was completely destroyed, and never rebuilt.

The first push into Moskochev lasted two days, before the order was given to retreat back to the ten mile line. Overall, hundreds of Adrionian military personnel were killed on April 5th and 6th, in what many consider to be the first major blunder of the war. Furthermore, at least three of Adrionis' jets were lost during the fierce battle.
