A Grand Gala in Ardala [IC]

Postby Kimina » Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:30 am

(OOC thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=538280)

The Kimini royal palace sat in a quiet section at the northern tip of the ancient city of Ardala, as had been the way of things for millennia previous. A paved two-lane road shot off from the north end of the city's urban area and ran off towards the palace. Groves of dates, peaches, oranges, and an assortment of other trees suitable for the climate grew with seeming liberty, their interlaced leaves softly sheltering the area from the towering skyscrapers and noise of the city beyond.

The palace proper was enclosed by a tall wall of sandstone blocks. The weathering of those set on the bottom layer revealed that they had likely been in their places for a long period of time. Perhaps they had sat there since the founding of the city itself, or even before. A large iron gate lay opened in the middle, its arched peak reaching just over the wall. Various engravings were scattered across it, depicting animals ordinary and mythical and grand battles and the works of Christian saints and nearly anything which had ever caught the fancy of the royal family.

Flanking the gate on either side stood members of the King's Guard with rifles held to their chests. Their uniforms were a deep green and were lined with golden buttons which caught the few rays rays of sunlight which had managed to fight their way through the trees to the ground and reflected them brilliantly as a kind of imperfect compensation for the work. Smart white ceremonial caps rested on their heads and contrasted neatly with the tan wall behind them.

Through the gate, the paved asphalt abruptly transfigured into a roadway of carefully-lain brick. This new path traveled further into the trees, eventually making it all the way to the building itself. It wrapped its way around a large, circular fountain which stood directly opposing the palace's massive doorway. The steps up to the entrance were draped in a red carpet, a suitable greeter for the guests.

The royal garden was nestled in off to the side of the palace. The Kimini monarch sat quietly at a small, unassuming wooden table. From where he was resting, he could see through the last boughs of foliage and find the Kimina River peeking through. The nation's namesake formed a rippling blue border that had marked the eastern bounds of Kimini territory since time immemorial. Kimina's neighbor Qasifya was found across the water. The relationship between the two nations was quite strange, partially owing to the extremely decentralized nature of Qasifya's government and the political issues brought by its instability.

Akil gently lifted the guest list from the table and began to read it. The Qasifyan Sheikh's name immediately jumped out at him. The Kimini government had independently dealt with numerous Qasifyan political elites who were technically under the jurisdiction of the central government, but acted de facto mostly on their own whims. Al-Qammadi and the Kimini government were well-acquainted and Akil hoped to progress relations if posible. He recognized several of the other names as belonging to Teremaran elites. There was also a good portion of guests from outside the region, all of which he hoped to get to know.

His reading was interrupted by Tewodros al-Koraz, his most trusted servant and manager of the palace's affairs daily affairs. "The guests should be arriving shortly, Your Majesty," he said, standing behind Akil.

The king put down the guest list and turned to face his friend. "Excellent, I assume everything is in order?"

"Yes," replied Tewodros without much more to add.

"I'll go and greet them, then," replied the king with a smile as he rose of his seat. "Thank you for taking care of all of the arrangements."

"It's my pleasure, Your Majesty."

Leaving the conversation with his friend of few words, Akil made his way through the eastern wing of the palace out to the entrance, where he stood anticipating the arrival of his guests.

The Letters of Invite had come, HIM had decided to send Herman II of Kroutenburg as her Imperial Representative. Things were clear, Herman's Wife, Augestia VII of Aoustatt/Krout had also came with him. She had never gone to an Arabic Country, and the govt. thought that she can compliment the Grand Duke abroad, so they sent her as well.

"We are Almost Here, Your Ducal Majesty"-Said the Driver of the grand and luxuries McRoyals a9, which the House of Krout Owned. "Very well, we should better get ready. Darling, you should get the gifts we have for the King of Kimina"-Was the response of the patient Duke, Herman II. "I will"-Replied the Grand Duchess.

The Kimini's had been informed to address the Duke and Duchess by their Titular Names (i.e Herman II and Augestia VII), and if not an royal or noble then the standard "Your Ducal Majesty". The gates of the Palace Opened, the Grand Dukes Car entered along with another. It was a La Royale 7, owned by non-other than Dr. Eldona Bakers, one of the richest man in all of Equit. He had a lot of plans, and ambitions.

Both of the Car's parked symmetrically near the Fountain, the Trio Stepped out greeted each other, bowed, shook there hands, taking a note that they where the first to arrive from the Airport to the Palace and then entered inside seeing the people awaiting to welcome them.

The Hanoverians may not have been the first to arrive, but they did arrive in style.

Two motorcycles were the first vehicles through the gate, followed behind by three silver BMW X5s. Then came a black Jaguar XJ; the car chosen for this occasion by the King and Queen of Hanover. Finally, two more BMW X5s followed behind.

Pulling up at the fountain, multiple suited officers of the Royal Protection Branch of the Federal Police exited there vehicles, taking posts around the rest of the motorcade. The front door of the Jaguar opened as an Army Officer, I’m the mess dress of the Royal Life Guard regiment, hopped out. Opening the rear door of the car, he saluted as George VII, King of Hanover, exited the vehicle.

Dressed in a black tuxedo, and with miniature versions of his medals on his chest, King George cut a striking figure. Tall, leanly built, with short brown hair and a clean shave face, George looked kingly.

Having exited the car, Georgs turned to offer a hand to his wife Madeline, Queen of Hanover. A strikingly beautiful woman, with long brown hair, dark blue green eyes, fair skin, and a slender, graceful figure, she is dressed in an elegant white dress.

The King and Queen then approached the King of Kimina. George offered a polite bow of the head to him. ‘Your Majesty, thank you for hosting us. It is our great pleasure to be here today’.

Both of the Car's parked symmetrically near the Fountain, the Trio Stepped out greeted each other, bowed, shook there hands, taking a note that they where the first to arrive from the Airport to the Palace and then entered inside seeing the people awaiting to welcome them.

The King watched quietly as the two high-end vehicles pulled up to the palace. He recognized the two from the first vehicle as the Duke and Duchess from the United Commonwealth based on photographs he had seen. He then watched as they greeted the sole inhabitant of the next vehicle. He didn't recognize this third person, but between on his previous inspection of the guest list and the new arrival's closeness with the other two, he felt it was safe to assume that this was the other Domriyllian. A member of the palace staff confirmed this estimation when he loudly proclaimed the arrival of "His Ducal Majesty Hermann II of Krout, Her Ducal Majesty Augestia VII of Krout, and The Honorable Doctor Eldona Baker." The king waited for them to reach his position near the entrance before extending his greeting.

"Warmest greetings, my friends!" he began in heavily-accented but understandable English. A translator stood next to him, but the monarch was fluent enough in English, at least at this level of conversation, that his assistance wouldn't be necessary. He continued, addressing the nobles first. "Duke Hermann and Duchess Augestia," he said, turning to face each as he spoke. "It is a great pleasure to have you here." He shook their hands and then gestured through the doors. "Please, make yourselves comfortable. There are drinks suitable to any taste to be had complimentary of our friends at Terembev and there will soon be many people of interest to meet.

With that, he inclined his head towards the other. "And you must be Dr. Baker," he said with a smile. "I look forward to getting acquainted. I'm certain there will be many areas in which we have mutual interest." Akil had been hoping for many guests such as Eldona Baker, capable businesspeople with connections. While this gala was intended to celebrate the growth and renewal that the Kimini people had brought about, there was always room for more friendly businesses to revitalize things even further. He gave the same spiel about the drinks and company to Dr. Baker, leaving him with a translator as requested. He then returned to his original position, ready to greet the next guests to arrive.

The Hanoverian royals pulled up as part of a seemingly endless procession of vehicles to the palace shortly after Akil finished greeting the previous group. The herald announced their arrival shortly after they exited their vehicle. "Presenting His Majesty King George VII and Her Majesty Queen Madeline of Hanover," he said loudly, with the aim of being heard over the sound of instruments from the palace which signified the presence of other royals at the event. The appearance of the two was quite impressive, enough so that they wouldn't have had any issue attracting the attention of observers even if the military escort and instrumental introductions were excluded.

They certainly managed caught the eye of the Kimini monarch, who watched as they made their way towards the entrance of the palace where he stood. He was pleased that other royals had responded to the invitation. For the overwhelming majority of the twentieth century, Kimini royalty were either dead or in exile. Those times were hard to look back on, but with the victory of the joint monarchist-republican front in 1985, the royals had been able to return safely. Akil ascended to the throne which he was born for, and now, here he was, free to gallivant about openly with royalty from the wider world. It was a bit jarring, but at least it was for the better.

He returned George's bow, an appropriate gesture given their similarity in rank. "The pleasure is all mine," he exclaimed with a smile, opening his arms in a gesture of welcoming. "It is an honor to be able to host members of another royal dynasty." His arms still open, he swept them towards the opened entrance doors. "Please, feel free to come inside and speak with the rest of the guests and enjoy the refreshments. I'm sure there will be many opportunities for us to get more acquainted throughout the event."

Supreme Soviet Building, Ville Fédéal de Neu-Aackensbourg

Comrade Weiss: "There is absolutely no reason, under any circumstances, for a revolutionary state to engage in frivolous parties with foreign nobilities; the international working class will surely see our attendance at this gala as a sign of bureaucratic degeneration in our revolution."

President Ufferman: "Might I remind you, comrades, of the guiding thesis of the 2014 Party Congress: the preservation of the political gains of the proletariat in the 2011 Revolution, chiefly the soviet system in Lotha?

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Demokratischerepublique cannot survive much longer without engaging in the international sphere. If we are to carry out our task, we must send representatives to foreign governments and engage in international trade. Otherwise, our political gains will be gone."

Weiss: "What good are our so called 'political gains' if we allow the state to engage with the international bourgeoisie?

Ufferman: "What is a dictatorship of the proletariat but a bourgeois state without the bourgeoisie, comrade?"

Comrade Dubois: "Our 'dictatorship of the proletariat' is a bourgeois state with the bourgeoisie, Mr. President."

Comrade Zucker: "Perhaps the task of sending a representative is a task best suited for the Senate?"

A loud argument breaks out.

Dubois: "The Supreme Soviet is unwilling to relinquish any further powers to the Senate. Foreign affairs is the exclusive domain of the organized class."

Comrade Stein: "Foreign affairs is a sphere inherently alien to the class, and as a matter of principle, the Abstentionnistes will do everything in our power to prevent this further perversion of the worker's state."

Ufferman: "The Demokratischerepublique will not tolerate any impediment to its existence by our ultra-leftist comrades. As President of the Supreme Soviet, I am invoking the principle of democratic centralism on this issue. Please vote using the buttons on your desks. This vote will be binding on all deputies."

In a few moments, the votes were in, with the yeas narrowly beating the nays. It was decided that Lotha would send a representative.

Luche Coopérative, West Champagne, Grand Ouestenkommune

In a small, stone country villa, Craig LaFarge packs his bags. Lafarge, former star shortstop of Team Champagne, was no stranger to travel, both as a baseball player and a state-made model celebrity. If any Lothique had traveled outside of the country, it was him.

His wardrobe consisted mainly of t-shirts, usually promotional giveaways from his team, and athletic shorts. But beside these casual outfits was a pristine tailored suit and tie, the centerpiece of which was a red sash decorated with medals and awards for his service to the party and revolution.

With his packing finished, he donned a plain black baseball cap and a pair of sunglasses to avoid paparazzi. Finally, from his trophy case, he selected his Fall 2012 Championship ring. Though his performance in the spring of 2017 was better, this championship was his favorite; the first held after the revolution. His first ring as a "free man".

A car pulled up outside the villa and honked twice. Lafarge grabbed his suitcase and rushed outside, where he was driven to the train station, took the train to Aackensbourg, then the Trolley to Victorie Aérodrome Militaire, put on a plane to Ksanderburg International Airport, and from there a flight to Kimina.

Ardala, Kimina

Following a short rest at the hotel, Craig LaFarge donned his fancy clothes, ring, sash, shaved, and slicked his hair back. Outside the hotel, a bodyguard, Monsieur Klaus Beaumont, and consevateur party representative Comrade Marie Grossmann met Lafarge in a white toyota SUV. Arriving at the royal palace, the three couldn't help but feel "underdressed" with respect to their transportation, fitting as it might be for a communist country.

Exiting the car, Lafarge and his two assistants made their way towards the king, clearly enchanted by the beauty of the palace.

Craig Lafarge, followed by Klaus and Marie, bowed to the king. "Your majesty," he began, "thank you for inviting us. I must say, your palace is beautiful; not even the old imperial city in Aackensbourg compares."

The king listened as the two nobles inventoried their numerous gifts to him, nodding politely as they listed each one. "Thank you very much," he began once they had finished. He gave some brief instructions to the palace staff and the nobles' assistant as to where to bring the gifts. "These generous offerings are not necessary by any means, but I greatly appreciate your consideration. I hope to be able to return your kindness some day."

He was then addressed by Eldona. "Thank you for your kind words," he said with a smile in response to the businessman's compliments. The question about the economy didn't surprise him. In fact, Sir Baker's interest in the economy was a good sign for the prospective agreements to be struck throughout the Gala. He continued. "Our country has a great deal of oil, which we either export crude or manufacture into consumer goods at the many factories in the southern regions. The south also produces steel, which was our primary industry during the time of the Kimini Soviet Socialist Republic. Beyond that, we have many growing telecommunications companies centralized here in Ardala..." He trailed off as if he planned to add more to the list, but ended up stopping there. "There is much more to be said about our economy, but I must greet the rest of the guests first. As I have said, there should be much opportunity for personal conversations later on. Please, head inside and enjoy the refreshments and the company of the rest of the guests."

The next group of guests immediately caught the king's attention upon their arrival. Their convoy was curiously more modest those escorting the previous grand processions of royalty and nobility. The herald announced the arrival of "Craig Lafarge, Honorable Representative of the Partei Kommunistische Conservateur Lotha." While Akil did not speak the Lothique language, English cognates told most of the story. This was the delegation from the Lothique Democratic Republic. He found it slightly odd that such a nation would be sending a delegate to this event, but the world was a strange place and everybody had their reasons for doing things.

Akil was, perhaps justifiably, skeptical of any self-proclaimed socialist state. The Falkasian puppet government of the Kimini Soviet Socialist Republic had made a point out of rooting out all vestiges of the abolished nobility and royalty, and although he had born late enough to avoid the majority of their revolutionary wrath, still lost many family and was still made to grow up with the threat of the secret police pinned back somewhere in the recesses of his mind. The Lothique, however, had the potential to be a much more reasonable group. After all, they had made the gesture of sending somebody. If nothing else, getting on well with them would serve as a good opportunity to show the rest of the world, especially the ever-encroaching Yellow Star Republic-led Mutual Assistance League of Eastern Tavlyria, that the Kimini were capable of looking beyond their entrenched grudges in pursuit of a brighter future.

Craig and the rest made their greeting. "I appreciate the kind words, my friends," he began. "I unfortunately cannot say that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting your Aackensbourg, but I have no doubt that it is very beautiful, which only makes your compliment all the more meaningful. It is always an honor to host fellow Teremarans." He turned his head with a nod and made a broad gesture towards the open doors of the palace. "Please, enjoy the gala. There are complimentary refreshments available inside, and I'm certain some of the other guests will be quite pleased at the opportunity to meet an athlete of your renown."

The three representatives breathed a sigh of relief. 12 years ago, the Lothique nobility was violently abolished; Kaiser Jean-Louis XVIII, his wife, and his two eldest sons were executed by rotsgardistes, along with any other influential nobles and of-age sons. Everyone else was given a new name, occupation, and was shipped off to backwoods towns in the plains of the Grand Ouest or the peaks of Das Hautes-Plateaux. In spite of this, the king was cordial. When he mentioned never having visited Aackensbourg, Lafarge almost wished he could invite him.

The three had admittedly discussed in the car whether their invitation was some sort of mistake, or worse, a trap. Those worries were quickly replaced with shock and wonder and the opulence of the palace. Craig Lafarge wasn't pandering when he said its more beautiful than the palace in Aackensbourg. By the time of the revolution, hard times had reached even the royals, who sold most of their baubles in order to pay their private army. Even the west wing of the palace had been stripped bare and turned into condos for the nation's ultra-wealthy, boasting their "world-class security".

Taking a moment to breathe in the scenery, Lafarge looked around the room to see a mix of royals, diplomats, and businessmen. Becoming aware of just how out of place he was, he found a glass of something light and retreated to the corner to observe.

"Comrade Grossman, do you think there'll be any other socialists here?"

"We are the only socialists, comrade."

"I know, I know, but you know that I mean—"

"The Yellowsians, yes, of course. I'm not sure if we'll have the displeasure of seeing those revisionary opportunists."

"You sound less excited for them than the actual CEOs."

"CEOs are easier to talk to. Especially the more ruthless ones. They share our cynicism about the world, and our unashamed pursuit of our class interests.

Opportunisten, on the other hand, are a lot trickier. They'll lie to your face. Sometimes they'll even believe the lie themselves, which makes finding the truth that much more difficult."

"Hm. I see." Craig was puzzled. What in god's name was his party asking of him?

George offered a smile. "Thank you. As a sign of our gratitude, I've had a small gift brought'. George's Aide stepped forward, presenting a 20-inch steel sword with silverwork and coral stones on it, and a gemstone encrusted sheath, to the King. 'I hope you enjoy it. I had it made custom for this occasion'.
"And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic nor popular - but one must take it because it is right."

Akil stretched his arms straight out in front of him, palms facing up. The sword in both of his hands hands, one gripping onto the hilt from below and the other supporting the sheathed blade. The monarch gave a polite bow of the head. "Thank you," he responded, inspecting the decorated sheath. "This is an excellent gift. It is a great honor to accept such an excellent example of your nation's craftsmanship." He then handed it down gently to an aide for safekeeping.

Ardala, Kimina

They arrived by plane, and were whisked rather quickly to the Palace. Antonella had done her research as far as the best driving service, flights, customs, and everything else necessary, even though neither of them had ever set foot in Kimina to gain prior experience. One thing that David could count on was he had one of the best assistants in the business.
He had gone through three prior to find her.

Not that he was demanding, but it took time to find a comfortable fit, as well as someone capable enough to go above and beyond. The last one was capable, but alas, too attractive. His wife had put in her veto on that, not verbally, but with her extreme discomfort showing, and he had to respect her wishes. Her opinion very much mattered to him.

Antonella Rautner, an attractive woman in her own right, was actually older than David, although spry and energized for her age. Her experience informed most of her capability, with solid common sense making up the rest. She had helped run her family’s industrial supply business for many years, before they had decided to sell off to one of the larger Neu Engollian corporations and the family leadership had retired. Genevieve had warmed right up to Antonella on first meeting.

They didn’t speak much in the car ride over.
“Gala in Ardala!” He almost growled it out, “It sounds like one of those exotic locale exhibition prizefights from the old days, doesn’t it?”

“Ha! It does!” Antonella replied with a smile, although didn't add any more.

They arrived. David, in classic tuxedo from one of the finest Panoli designers, with Antonella in tow in a lovely black dress that modestly went a little below her knees, as such was the style in the Confederacy for most women. They were both more than a little surprised that the King himself was greeting guests, and with little help from aides in identification. He must have studied photos.

“Your Highness, it is an honor! This is my assistant, Antonella Rautner. We are so pleased to be here at your beautiful Palace, in your great nation!”

Alor'i cranes her neck, looking for a place to land. "Right there is good, slow descent, please; we shan't scare anyone." The dragon nods, circling lower before landing. The beast's rider departs, gracefully sliding down. She sighs, turning to her mount. "Thank you, Ton'li. I will call you again." She bows slightly, watching the dragon circle once overhead before flying off.

The young woman... glimmered, her dress seemingly shifting in the light as she walked, her heels clacking against the ground as she makes her way towards the king. She bows, touching her palm to her forehead as she does so. "I apologize for Artist's absence, your highness. I have been asked to take her place as she deals with familial matters."

Ardala, Kimina

They took a direct flight from Karalaga with her entourage on a private chartered jet. Her brother had insisted.
"You cannot even travel through that cesspool of Qasifya by train these days without getting an RPG up your bum. The only way to traverse it is to fly over it, letting the roaches fight over the scraps below."

Her two assistants kept to themselves, while her two security kept almost stone statue vigilant, even in mid-air, when there was no need for vigilance. They were D57 intel officers, as well as being highly trained in personal security, and she was sure that there were a lot of thoughts swirling in there right now as to what they would do when they landed. If they got in the way of her fun and edification, they could find themselves in the deep depths of D57's detention center, Tumbo Lanyoka [Serpent's Belly], as far as she was concerned.

Every D57 man, and some of the rare women, tried to throw their weight around in her presence, only to learn what they should know all along. The Fazembe power didn't stop with the men. It carried over to the matriarchs, sisters, and daughters, as well. The dynasty wasn't just a patriarchy. The further proof was in her mother, Hana, who had ruled briefly for a few years after the assassination of her husband, Garenga, known to the people as Papa Gengi. She had been wise enough to know that power behind the throne was as much, if not more desirable, and safer, than that on the throne itself. She had urged Linaga to take over at a young age, as soon as he was able, knowing that she did not desire the headaches that went with being the President.

That was the power that Akina Fazembe sought. To continue to have influence from behind the scenes while her brothers vied for the throne itself. Her brother Linaga, or 'Papa Lini', could be the face of power to the people, and he thought Akina was being the public face to the rest of the world, but she was having several more meetings than he was aware. She had associates all over the globe, ensuring the family business, as much as her own interests.

Akina wore a traditional wrap, Tizi style dress that was a deep navy blue, with bits of emerald, gold trim, and white accents throughout. The designs set in the gold trim were elaborate to be sure, representing her people and tales from the earliest days of the Tizi tribe. It reached down to her ankles. She wore shoes with modest heels, as was Mubatan fashion. The focus should be on the dress, not the feet.

They arrived at the Palace of King Akil in the capital, and they approached him through the garden.
"King Akil, Your Highness, it is an honor. I have brought both tribal masks from our Tizi tribe, as well as some of the finest small batch blends of our coffee as gifts for you and your family, to show our respect and gratitude. It is a pleasure to finally meet in the flesh..."

The Roujlanheb (Qasifya) - Kimini
Border

The trip over the border was not smooth by any means. As the Sheikh prepared to cross with a small advance force to assist his convoy up to the border, a rival - likely Hadid bin Garakh, the warlord who held the territory to the north of Roujlanheb, the land of the Moutayeh.
Through later assessment after the action, although the culprit could have been a rival of Garakh’s vying for power there and looking to impress, or even a group infiltrated far up from the southern territory that bordered the coast, ruled by Malik Bahrami of the Udetjah, it was deemed that only Garakh would have had the power and wherewithal to direct that type of coordinated attack, even using a drone for recce, which was a far too precious commodity to be wantonly wasted without some hope of success.

Bahrami wouldn’t waste his drones in such an attempt. The warlords to the northeast and east wouldn’t likely either, or be able to infiltrate a team in this far to the west, and a foreign paramilitary group would risk the warlords banding together once again in another holy crusade against the infidels, were they to be discovered.

“Your Highness, we must wait in this wadi while our forces deal with the interlopers and clear the path to the border. We have security on either flank to deal with air and land threats.”

Qammadi nodded in response, his thoughts wrapped up in emotions of extreme anger and betrayal, as he sat in the back of the armored Sidus SUV that was to take them all the way to Ardala. They waited some time as the noise of rockets and constant heavy machine gun fire took away any hope for silence so he could focus.

Adnan unwisely chose to chatter on to break in on the Sheikh’s thoughts.
“Surely we will take revenge on Garakh when you have finished business with the Kimini.”

“It is not Garakh that I reserve my deepest seething venom for, Adnan.”

“Oh? You think another is to blame?”

“No, I have no doubt it is Garakh, who Karim will ensure gets his just dessert. But also certainly the work of a mole. This is too coincidental. If not a move to take me out, at least to embarrass me, as this word will get back to the Kimini, so close to their border. This was calculated, and they are working with someone with very privileged information to know the significance of my trip.”

“Surely whoever it is has had observers watching your every movement for just such a journey, Your Highness?”

Yusef Al-Qammadi didn’t reply for a moment, staring at Adnan instead. He was certainly high up on the list of possible moles. He had known Adnan for a long time, and he was from the same village as many of his cousins, but still, who of his people, even some family, were not vulnerable to a big payoff? Or a threat to family in ransom for information?

Karim Al-Fazan, Al-Qammadi’s General, and the brute power behind his throne, got on the radio.
“Your Highness, it is over. We have wiped them out.”

The Sheikh beckoned Adnan for the radio, who willingly handed it over.
“All of them?”

“Well, no…we captured two. One is unconscious. Kalil is working on the other to see who was giving them orders.”

“I know how Kalil works. I would like our prisoners alive. We need a softer touch of inquisition.”

“Yes, Your Highness. I understand. I will remind him.”

As it was safe to proceed, the convoy headed back out for the bridge that crossed the Kimina River. The Sheikh looked out the window at the destruction. His Roujlani had not gotten away without shedding some blood.
A Mahingra Shakqum lay on its side, still burning. He recognized some of his men sprawled around it in very un-life like poses.

Other technicals and vehicles lay near the road, also burned out or destroyed. They were certainly not of Karim’s force, but whoever their attacker might have been. Some of Karim’s men had lined the enemy dead up and were pilfering their pockets for anything of value, both information, and actual tangible trading value.

Al-Qammadi never begrudged them that. Spoils were fair in war. He would lose loyalty fast if he forbid it.

Soon enough, they were over the Sadaqa Bridge and being waved through by Kimini customs. It wasn’t much farther from there to the outskirts of Ardala, and then into the heart of their capital. Compared to parts of the Roujlanheb, it was actually quite pleasant.

Ardala

The rest of their journey was much less eventful into Kimina.

Before they entered the garden where the King was greeting guests, Al-Qammadi pulled Adnan aside.
“What did we bring as a tribute?”

“Ehh…Aaahhh.”

“The gift?!”’’

“Oh, that! Yes, your Highness. We brought a small wooden chest of gold, both coins and jeweled trinkets…”

“How exciting.” He said it in a much less excited voice.

“I guess it depends on your perspective, Your Highness. The chest itself is a historic artifact from the earliest days of the Qasifyan sultans who served the Grand Terim Caliphate. So, there is more to it than mere monetary value.”

“Yes, I get it.”

They finally were able to see King Akil in the Royal Garden, after a brief wait behind some other guests.
“Your Highness, a pleasure to see you once again.” He bowed as one did to a King,
“It is always an honor. I am here, both representing the Roujlani, but also all the Qasifyan peoples, on behalf of President Jalmani Amranadien, in order to celebrate with you.”
He paused as the chest was brought up by his security men. It was not light.
“Please accept as a token of our gratitude in your eternal friendship, this chest that dates back to Terim Caliphate times, passed down from several sultans, and also filled with several special surprises.”

The Neu Engollians were the next to arrive at the palace. Their more modest transportation was closer to the Lothique, and betrayed their lack of royal affiliation. Terembev was a very large company, and there was no doubt that they could've afforded to bring a much more impressive convoy along if they had wanted one like the Hanoverians. Royals, however had their ways of doing things very much ingrained, which corporate types like this were free to reject as they pleased. That and the fact that no matter how successful the company, luxuries and overindulgences cut into profit margins, which the nobility didn't have to concern themselves with.

The herald announced the arrival of "The Honorable Mr. David Toft." Akil actually recognized this name without any outside assistance. Terembev was fairly well-known throughout the Teremara geopolitical region, and between that and the fact that the company had reached out before the party to supply some of the refreshments for the gala, he had heard the name a few times. Between Dr. Baker and the new arrival, the business side of this event was set to create many opportunities

The two Neu Engollians made their way up the steps and expressed their greeting. "Thank you for your kind words towards my country and my home. It is a pleasure to be able to host this event," he said politely. "We have not had the pleasure to meet yet in person, but it feels as though we have some connection through your company's generosity in providing some of the refreshments for today. Likewise, I'm sure the rest of the guests are getting to know you and your company in the best way possible, through your drinks."
He let out a deep but somewhat muted laugh at the last statement. He finished and continued, still smiling. "Please, enjoy the gala. Some of the other esteemed guests are already inside socializing."

The next guest approached the palace. The heralds announced the arrival of "Ms. Alor'i of Mindhart" with the same pomp and flare as they had managed to muster all throughout the entrances of the various elites in attendance. This guest was somewhat unique in that she had arrived without an entourage of security or assistants.

The Kimini monarch watched as she approached. He knew next to nothing about her or her country. From what he had been able to gather based on the cultural resources available, he was aware that they took a healthy interest in the reptile population. Based on the Mindhartian delegate's name, he figured it safe to assume that they only had a forename. Or perhaps it was a surname.

She made it up the steps and greeted the king. His suspicions about the naming system were further advanced by the mention of "Artist," who, as the aide at his side quickly informed him, was the ruling president of Mindhart. "Welcome to Ardala," he began with a smile. "It is unfortunate that your president was unable to attend, but such is the way of things, but it is a pleasure to have you here. I am glad that you were able to be here in her stead. I do hope that she is able to handle these familial matters and that they aren't anything too serious for her," he said. He paused for a few moments before continuing on a different line of thought. "Please, enjoy the event. There are other guests inside who I'm sure would like to make your acquaintance."

The ever-reliable royal herald announced the arrival of the next guests. By this stage in the gala, new guests were appearing at such regular intervals that, had he been aware of the order they would be arriving in, the herald would've been able to announce all of them with reasonable accuracy without even looking. This time, it was "The Honorable Ms. Akina Fazembe of Mubata," who arrived flanked by agents of the nearby nation's D57 intelligence agency.

The Mubatan was one of the most anticipated guests of the night. He valued the attendance and company of all the others and hoped to get to know them all (this was a social event, after all). Despite this, the delegation from Mubata and the yet-to-arrive party of Sheik Al-Qammadi remained high on the king's list of people to talk to. These were elites representing two of Kimina's closest neighbors. Both Mubata and Qasifya were of questionable stability and Akil knew that the right words to the right person could serve to dramatically expand his nation's influence in the region. There was also a very serious potential of things backfiring and only furthering the unrest and hostility, but he tried not to think too much about that. As long as he held to his convictions and stood up for Kimina, he supposed, everything should go smoothly.

Akina was another name on the list which he had recognized without the necessity of any further research. She was, after all, the Mubatan president-dicator's sister, a significant title even when compared to the sometimes absurd honorifics which some southern Tavlyrian warlords decorated their short and brutal reigns with. The king was very conscious of the current overall political climate, and while he wasn't aware of just how much she actually pulled the strings in Mubata, he knew full well that she was a major influence in her brother's administration. Otherwise, she likely wouldn't have been at this event in the first place.

He was debating the plan for both her and the Qasifyan sheikh internally when she made her way over to greet him. "It is likewise an honor and a great pleasure to have you here," he began. A nearby aide took the coffee, likely off towards the vicinity of the kitchen. The king stood holding one of the masks, turning it over in his hands and inspecting it with interest. "These are wonderful gifts," he said, running his wrinkled, tan index finger along one of the grooves in the wood. "Please accept my heartfelt gratitude towards you and your tribe for these grand pieces of art, and for the coffee as well." Akil didn't drink coffee all that often himself, but it was the thought that counted and he was sure another member of the royal family would appreciate it. "Please, come into the palace and enjoy the gala!"

Inside The Palace
Ardala

David Toft walked through the guests filing into the Palace after greeting the King. He exchanged pleasantries with a few, as did Antonella. Then he spotted three that were rather starkly, austerely dressed. Other cues told him they were southern Madurinites. He heard some mumblings from some other Teremaran guests that confirmed his suspicions. These were the Lothique. He should be shocked that they had both been invited, and actually accepted the invitation, to a Royal Palace, but from what he knew of history, he knew the Lothique played the long game. They weren't above politicking with ideological foes to better position themselves in regional standing. Just like a lot of others here tonight, David was sure. In the end, they were just people like everyone else.

"Let's go over and talk to them."

"Eww, David! The communists?"

"Socialists, Antonella. And they drink beverages, too!"

It was a part of the world that he had really hoped to expand the Terembev reach, and this was a perfect opportunity. The heart of what Terembev considered its home base, Madurin, and the LDR was a glaring black hole in their commercial map. Lacking the right deals, distribution, and partnerships, it made the strong blue of his operational map over southern Madurin look like a donut. Tonight could open the door to changing that, if David had anything to say about it. They drifted over casually to the LDR trio.
"Hello, er...Comrades! I am David Toft, CEO of Terembev, and this is my assistant, Antonella Rautner. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintances."

David caught glimpse of some knowing looks from the three Lothique between themselves.

"Pleasure to meet you both! My name is Craig Lafarge, this is my assistant Comrade Grossman of the PKCL, and this is Monsieur Beaumont, my personal bodyguard."

The five exchanged handshakes.
Toft and Antonella took each of their hands.
"Comrade LaFarge, Comrade Monsieur Beaumont, Comrade Madame Grossman. It is an honor."

"I thought Comrade Grossman was joking when she said a CEO would talk to us first; quite ironic!"

Toft shrugged and smiled.
"Speaking on behalf of my fellow CEOs around the business world: We're natural salespeople and networkers. It's just ingrained in us to make contact with as many as folks as possible in a social setting. I learned it from one of the best, my father, Jan. However, I have to confess that I did target you all out of the many guests proliferating this celebration. So, that narrowed the odds quite a bit as to who would make the first approach...

I must say I'm curious about your Democratic Republic. I have never had the opportunity to visit, even though it's so close to home. I hope to someday soon, in fact, to seque into that...

I'll come straight to the point, Comrades. I would like to know what we at Terembev can do to grease the wheels, er... work through the red tape, to bring our distribution business to your shores. What is the easiest route for Terembev to set up shop in the LDR and sell our beverages to your people? And also, what would you ask from us to make it most beneficial for your government to have such an enterprise operating within your borders? Employment opportunities? Community enrichment and involvement? Dare I use the evil capitalist phrase of 'more choices'?"
David smiled wider as he said that last part, mostly, but not entirely, in jest.

He took in the judgmental faces of the Lothique leadership, hoping they were at least somewhat receptive and he wasn't coming on too strong. No one really liked in your face salesmen that pressured you into doing things you didn't want to actually do, say, buy or accept.

Eldona or Sir Baker, as he was known after being conferred an Medal of Honor by the Govt. first looked around the palace thinking about business opportunities, he noticed many things there but he decided to keep them for latter purposes. He tallked with his Jr.s, Freind and P.A, Adwin Hobbler and went to talk with the Dukes after which he went back to the King saying, "Well, Your Majesty. Your Palace is quite beautiful, And I am thankful for the translator you provided me with. I don't like to flex much about my money but anyways. So, Whats with the Economy here ? I am quite interested to known more about Kimina".

"There are other Royals here.", said Herman to Augustia, Gesturing towards the Hanoverians. "Some People from Engollen have also came. I heard that the Terembrev has provided drinks and beverages for the event." replied Augestia. They then headed to talk with the Group of People that had Gathered in the Palace, trying to get acquainted with.

"Hello, Nice to Meet You. I am Augestia VII of Aoustaty and this is My Husband, Herman II of Kroutenburg." said the Smiling Grand Duchess. "Greetings. Nice to meet You." said Herman and Gesturing to the Guests to give There Introduction.

Beaumont chuckled a bit at being addressed as "comrade". Typically, the title was reserved for active members of a communist party; he had never so much as read a party newspaper.

"Importing liquor to the LDR has its challenges. As I'm sure you know, Lotha produces some of the finest beers and wines on the market, and lothiques can be quite, er, picky when it comes to what we drink."

Marie Grossman chimed in: "On top of that, the co-operatives" she said with scorn in her voice, "and their associated soviets, are quite powerful, and have set up quite a protectionist system. You would essentially have to get the Brewers Soviets to distribute for you if you wanted your product outside the Ksanderburg Metropolregion."

Craig thought for a second. "Does Terembev have any experience with soft drinks? We have limited access to sugar, so our sodas and such are full of disgusting artificial sweeteners."

Qasifya-Kimina Border

Two members of the Kimini Border Protection Agency sat outside with their backs against the guard building, chatting among themselves and watching somewhat carefully as a handful of civilian cars passed by their outpost to the rest of the border complex just beyond. They were dressed in full military kit, suitable for the often unpredictable border region. The white plastic lawn chairs that they had procured a few days earlier were struggling under the weight of the heavy plates protecting their torsos, but they held. Tavlyrian engineering at its finest. Not so fine of workmanship was the air conditioning in the building behind them, which had broken and pushed the border guards outside where the air was able to flow freely and cool things off slightly.

The radio which rested on the ground between the two suddenly began spewing chatter in Arabic at a remarkable pace. The guard on the left bent down in his chair to adjust it. As the broadcast cleared up, the two were able to make out what was being said. The important bits, at least. Reconnaissance had spotted smoke and fire a ways out. Some were taking bets on who had killed who befofre being quickly reprimanded by superiors. Border security had been informed that they should expect a high profile crossing. It was reasonable to assume that this was related.

The two stood up, taking their rifles up with them. After a quick glance at their weapons' respective chambers, they walked a few steps from the guard building, hoping to get a better view of any incoming threats or arrivals. Civilian traffic, which was fairly sparse today to begin with for being such a major point of entry, had all but stopped. Soon, Al-Qammadi's caravan crested over the green horizon of the banks of the Kimina river, rolling first past the Qasifyan guards on the other side of the bridge and then through the neutral zone directly above the river.

The two watched as it got closer, eventually entering Kimini jurisdiction. They let the caravan past with a nod of acknowledgement to the leading driver and a muted wave. The procession then continued towards the border complex, where it was swiftly pushed through thanks to the diplomatic credentials provided by the Kimini government.

Royal Palace, Ardala

The Sheikh's convoy rolled through the grove and up to the palace. For the first time that day, the stoic guards at the front seemed slightly uneasy. Having been informed earlier of the Sheikh's crossing of the border, they stood in slightly nervous anticipation. Qasifyan warlords had powerful enemies, and it was impossible to know where exactly the loyalties of any given member of the party were. They kept from showing anything too obvious out of professionalism and respect for the guests, but their fingers digging into the handguards of their rifles showed more than their faces or posture ever could.

The guards within the palace were no less nervous and just as subtle. They performed a routine patrol of the grounds which just so happened to coincide with the arrival of the procession. If any of Al-Qammadi's rivals were going to move, the high-profile nature of the gala would be an excellent opportunity to make a point. The Sheikh exited his vehicle with no less than four guards in reasonable proximity.

He made his way to the entrance of the palace without incident. The guards in the courtyard took the opportunity to relax a bit. It was now up to their counterparts indoors to keep the Sheikh out of trouble.

The king smiled as Al-Qammadi approached. The Qasifyan was a very important guest, another who, like the Mubatan, had the potential to sway the politics of the southern Tavlryian region. "It is an honor to see you again as well," the monarch began as Al-Qammadi bowed. "It is always a pleasure to host such an influential leader of our Qasifyan neighbor." He spoke in their native Arabic tongue. The praise and pleasantries were being slathered on more heavily than usual, but he considered it very important that the Sheikh enjoyed the gala.

Al-Qammadi's personal security presented Akil with the chest, which he inspected closely. The history behind the article caught his attention, all the more so considering both of their nations had once sworn fealty to the Caliphate. Perhaps this was a promising sign of future cooperation between the two. He continued the greeting, this time in his accented English. "Please, enjoy the party, my friend. There are many people here now who I'm sure are worth your attention. And be sure to find me before the event is done, I'm certain we'll have much to talk about."
