Election Reform Passes with De Facto Compulsory Voting
Wednesday, December 21st, 2022

Osto, Lessovik – This morning, a deal was announced from the ruling government for a final draft of Chancellor Ryan’s election reform bill, which was then passed by the Senate hours later. The bill, which passed the Senate 75-19-3, includes a newly added voter tax credit in addition to the originally proposed ranked choice voting, the election day holiday, and the mail in and early voting expansion.

The tax credit came as the ruling government’s alternative to the compulsory voting competitor bill put forth by the opposition. Under the voter tax credit amendment, eligible voters who show up to a polling location to vote will be eligible for a tax credit for that fiscal year’s taxes. Mail-in and early voters will also be given the same opportunity. The amendment also prohibits the voter from indicating who they voted for with the tax return and bars the use of legal mechanisms from coercing that information from the voter.

The reform is being regarded as a win for the compromise-oriented Chancellor, who secured unanimous support from her center-left FUP and the center-right Sovereignty parties, as well as nine senators from the Green Party. Following the bill’s passage, she celebrated the moment and praised the key senators who helped negotiate the extra votes beyond her party’s reach. “The new law is not the same bill we initially proposed but is stronger from the contributions from all voices in the Senate”.

While the new law’s tax credit was inspired by the opposition parties proposed compulsory voting bill, it was not enough for over half the opposition. The OPP and the Ridge both voted unanimously against the measure, as did six Green senators. Cody Stewart, the Green Party leader who was a vocal advocate of the compulsory voting competitor bill to potentially bolster his party’s electoral odds, signaled his intention before the vote to abstain, clearing the way for two other party members to join him in abstention and for the remaining half of his party to vote in favor.

Hoping to seize the momentum from her victory, Chancellor Ryan announced her intention to begin work on her flagship “Farm and Fish” bill when the Senate reconvenes. The Senate will be on an eleven-day holiday recess starting on Friday.

Federal Budget for 2023 Approved
The Federal District of Columbia
Published On: 21 December | Authored By: Harrison Wu

After months of meetings and deliberations, the Federal Budget for Fiscal Year 2023 has been approved by both the Senate and the Parliament of Representatives; and has been formally enacted into law by President Vukovich at the Capitol this morning.
Image
Both Legislative Bodies of Congress Approved the 2023 Budget

The process of creating the Federal Budget starts on 1 October, when the President of the United States submits a proposed budget to the Parliament of Representatives. From this point, the Senate and Parliament passes their own Budget Resolutions, after deliberations by each house’s respective Committee of Finance, which is due by 1 November. After passing their respective resolutions, a joint session of each house’s Committee of Finance is set to be held to negotiate differences between resolutions, which is due by 1 December. Each house is expected to vote on the final budget by 21 December, after which the final budget is sent to the President to be enacted into law. After all is said and done, the Federal Budget goes into effect on 1 February of the next year, with the previous budget formally ending on 31 January. Below the Federal Level, the States have similar budgeting processes.

The Federal Budget for the 2023 Fiscal Year encompasses well over $8 trillion United States Thallers, representing an increase in federal spending by close to seven percent, one of the largest expansions of federal expenditures in recent years. During fiscal year 2022, the Federal Government reported a net revenue of $8.2 trillion United States Thallers; and therefore created a surplus of $200 billion Thallers. The annual federal surplus, under the Federal Budgetary plan outlined by the Parliament’s Finance Committee, will be allocated towards paying off the National Debt. The bulk of Federal revenues are generated through income taxes, including personal and corporate income taxes. Large sums of revenue have also been generated from tariffs, as well as excise taxes, customs duties, and payroll taxes. The 2022 Fiscal Year does mark a 1.2% decline in annual revenues from the 2021 Fiscal Year, with the Bureau of Revenue attributing this to a slight slowdown in economic activity during the third quarter of this year.

All in all, the lion’s share of the Federal Budget for 2023 will be allocated between Defense, Health, and Human Services; with the three largest departments taking 12.5%, 22.5% and 22.5%, respectively. The Department of Infrastructure will receive 7.5% of the Budget, while the Departments of Agriculture, Education, Homeland Security will each receive a respective 3.75% of the Budget. The Department of Transportation will be allocated 1.875%, whereas the Departments of Rural Affairs, Science, and Urban Affairs will all be allocated 1.5%. The Departments of Commerce, Culture, Human Rights, Interior, Labor, Justice, Post Office, State, and Treasury will receive 1.25% of the Budget each. The smallest Department, the Department of Communications, will receive 1.125%. 3.75% of the Federal Budget will be allocated towards other expenditures, alongside 1.25% of the Budget being allocated into the Federal Rainy Day fund.

The 2023 Federal Budget notes an uptick in spending for multiple government agencies, as well as several spending records. The Department of Defense, for this year, will receive a record one trillion UST, which will allow the Armed Forces to give the average servicemember a much deserved raise. Furthermore, an expanded budget will allow for the Department to improve equipment and training for the Armed Services. Elsewhere, large increases in spending have been made for the Department of the Interior, with several million Thallers being dedicated to a massive clean up project in the Lliega Benala National Park in Altacado. The Department of Education alsos received a massive boost in funding, receiving funding to begin implementing the provisions established in the Safety in Educational Transit Act. Furthermore, an additional one billion UST has been provided for the Federal University System of Amaurita, allocating each of the 180 campuses across the nation with a five million Thaller grant to further expand computer science and technology courses available at the nation’s largest public college system.

Parliament Approves 2050 Federal Spending Bill
December 23rd, 2049
02:29

OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Parliament today passed legislation surrounding federal spending for 2050. The passage comes just ahead of the holiday recess, which will last until through January 1st.
Image
Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario

With 2050 being a critical election year, it may be the last year of immense domestic spending by the New Democratic Party. Parliament began working on the 2050 budget at the beginning of August, in which the NDP aimed to replicate the federal government's spending from 2049, which expires on January 15th. The federal government's spending outline was completed in late November and sent to queue, awaiting passage from the National Assembly. The bill was passed effortlessly today and is expected to be signed by chancellor Hadfield before Christmas. The bill's passage was the last bill voted on by parliament prior to the holiday recess. Parliament will return from recess on January 2nd.

The 2050 federal budget includes the allotment of $14 trillion Canadian dollars, up $1.4 trillion from 2049's spending. The large increase comes from the federal government's net revenue of $14.8 trillion dollars, a new record. The 800 billion dollar surplus will go towards covering unforeseen costs from the previous year, including natural disasters, economical setbacks and the national debt.

2050 federal spending will be mostly spent on domestic programs, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The budget is as follows:

  • $2.4 trillion to Infrastructure Canada
  • $1.8 trillion to Transport Canada
  • $1.45 trillion to Health Canada
  • $980 billion to Education Canada
  • $930 billion to the Canadian Space Agency
  • $880 billion to Energy Canada
  • $800 billion to Defence Canada
  • $750 billion to Agriculture Canada
  • $640 billion to Innovation and Science Canada
  • $540 billion to Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada
  • $280 billion to Intelligence Canada
  • $180 billion to Parks Canada
  • $160 billion to Global Affairs Canada
  • $150 billion to the Canada Post
  • $150 billion to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
  • $140 billion to the Labour Program
  • $100 billion to Public Safety Canada
  • $1.77 trillion to various Canadian departments and programs

Various departments have received heavily increased spending going into the 2050 fiscal year, such as Transport Canada, which is working with VIA Rail to greatly expand and overhaul the nation's rail network. The Canadian Space Agency's increased funding is expected to go towards research and development for new rocket technology, which will potentially allow CSA to fill the void that NASA left behind after its dismantlement. Infrastructure Canada's whopping $2.4 trillion budget is expected to go towards revitalising infrastructure in the southern provinces, as well as upkeeping the existing infrastructure in the nation. Energy Canada's $880 billion is expected to go towards maintaining and upgrading the power grid, as well as further funding nuclear energy in the nation.

Any money left unspent at the end of the 2050 fiscal year, under chancellor Hadfield's 'Leave Nothing Behind' initiative, will go towards overseas humanitarian efforts and other forms of foreign aid, rather than go towards the nation's deficit at the end of the fiscal year. The initiative intends for the federal government to spend its money in a positive manner in relation to the nation's economy, such that federal revenue is able to generate a surplus at the end of each fiscal year, which can go towards the nation's deficits, such as disaster damages and economic setbacks.

The 2050 budget goes into effect on January 16th.

Drongonia slips from first in 2022 Water Quality Index
Christchurch, Drongonia
December 28, 2022 | Dawn Christiansen

Image
The report notes that tap water in Drongonia is still
considered 'excellent'. Photo // File

The latest version of a yearly report and index, created by Christchurch University in collaboration with Yale University, has detailed how the state of Drongonia's drinking water supply has degraded since 2021.

The report, which has been published yearly since 1996, ranks over 190 countries on a 0-100 scale on details such as the quality of drinking water, its availability, the state of the supply infrastructure, and the nation's ability to provide sufficient access to safe drinking water in times of emergency. Drongonia has placed within the top ten of the index every year since its inception.

In 2022, however, the report detailed how access to safe drinking water is "not being secured equally among vulnerable communities", asserting that the drinking water infrastructure in majority non-White areas of Dunedin and Nelson has been "neglected by both local and central Government authorities." The report makes the claim that this "endangers the lives of already vulnerable communities within Drongonia."

In 2021's report, Drongonia ranked first - tied with seven other nations, for a perfect 100 score. This year, however, this oversight has seen the nation slip to tenth, behind nine nations tied with a score of 100. Drongonia's 2022 score is 99/100, with each subsection of the index scoring a perfect 100% rating, bar infrastructure. With this 99/100 score, Drongonia still ranks above other Anglosphere nations such as New Zealand (74.4), Australia (81) and Cancolastan (73.1). It is the only country in the region to see a reduction in score, however.

The report does praise recent government initiatives, such as the 'Drink up, Drongonia!' programme, however. The public health campaign, aimed at increasing water intake among Drongonians, was praised by the report as "a friendly and effective strategy." The report also mentioned the recent infrastructural improvements to rural water filtration facilities, calling the improvements "...world-leading in many aspects." The report also gives an overall summary of Drongonia's drinking water as "Overall excellent, albeit lacking in some areas."

When asked by journalists about the report and index, Health Minister Leah Driver said she "read the report" and is "unconcerned with its findings, in all honesty." Driver also told reporters that although health outcomes were in scope of the Ministry, delivering safe drinking water "falls squarely under the responsibility of city and district councils" and that they "should take it up with local mayors in cases where infrastructure is failing."

Opposition leader Sarah Ellice called the report's findings "utterly disgusting and unacceptable" in a Peaker post, later pledging to reporters outside Parliament that Labour would "redress any infrastructural inequality issues" if elected in 2024. Labour's Infrastructure spokesperson Adam Powell said that he was "shocked and appalled" to read the infrastructure section of the report.

Neither Nelson or Dunedin's mayor responded for TVDG's request for comment regarding the report's findings.

Corruption scheme exposed in Romda
Author: Valent́ina Bonḱa
Wednesday, December 28, 2022

Romda - A shocking corruption scandal has come to light in the local government of the city of Romda, with several high-ranking officials accused of accepting bribes and engaging in fraud.

According to sources, the scheme involved contracts being awarded to companies in exchange for kickbacks, as well as embezzlement of public funds. The investigation, which has been ongoing for several months, has already led to the arrests of several officials, including the head of the Department of Public Works and the Chief Financial Officer.

The mayor of Romda, Aṕollinarâ Gevorgâ (SD), has released a statement condemning the actions of the accused officials and pledging to cooperate fully with the investigation. "This kind of corrupt behavior will not be tolerated in my city," she said. "We will do everything in our power to root out corruption and ensure that justice is served."

The community of Romda has expressed anger over the revelations, with many residents expressing their outrage and disappointment by protesting in the city's central square. " I can't believe that the people we trusted to run our town were stealing from us and lining their own pockets," said one local resident. "It's a betrayal of the public's trust and it needs to be dealt with severely."

The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days. It is unclear at this time how widespread the corruption may be, but authorities are determined to get to the bottom of the matter and bring those responsible to justice.

Center Region, Kamilistan
Yerevan City, Yerevan Regional Capital

The President for FEPAL, Nader Mosslimini had make a statement about the bankruptcy, no one really know why he declared bankruptcy of FEPAL, but people theorize it could be the "FEPAL Alfox Plants Explosion", where the 5 out of the 11 tanks exploded, which the company lose around 1.9 Billions in Kaluns.

The explosion have took the lives of 19 workers, and 2 firefighters from the Operational District Fire and Rescue Department. The reason for the explosion was unknown, but the only theory was that one of the plant's pipe was unmanaged and was in disrepair, causing a leakage before exploding. The company was also sued for 10 cases regarding safety management, worker's condition and working condition. Due to this, FEPAL lost around 70% of it's revenue, plundering the company's value.

One of the former workers of the company, which we'll be calling him as C, told us that some of their payment would be halted for 9 months, with the little then the promised payment of 20 , 000 Kaluns ( 6, 200 USD ), with labor abuse and threats by the higher ups.

"If we were caught, like sleeping due to the overtime work, they will use rods or wooden sticks and beat us, sometimes we don't get enough food for those who are staying in the dorm."

The Secretary-Head of FEPAL, Farid Qasemi was arrested by the authorities for drug-related and abuse charges, followed by the confiscation of 20 stolen goods, and 2 luxury cars. This cost the company's to lose it's number, by yesterday, they were 35 Billions in debt. FEPAL have announced that all FEPAL pumping station would shut down immediate after the company's disbandment, the company plans to borrow a loan from the Federation's Loaning Bank or FL Bank was decline by it.

The FEPAL company would officially disband with 45 Billions in debt, and all FEPAL outlets and stations would also be shut down.

Nine Dead Amid Intense New Year's Blizzard
Friday, December 30th, 2022

Anamantha, Gilkesson - As the nation prepares to ring in a new year, emergency responders from the state of Gilkesson and Lessovik have cumulatively reported nine casualties to an intense blizzard buffeting the northern provinces of those states.

The storm, which came down from the Mrozengory Ranges that form the northern and eastern walls of Ostaja, swept in early Friday morning and has been making its way south and west, covering the northern provinces in up to a half of a meter of snow. Some power lines have fallen as a result of the ice and snow, leaving hundreds without power. The nine reported deaths were all attributed to exposure to the cold.

Emergency crews are working around the clock to restore power. Road conditions are abysmal, already hampered by the range of quality some of the most rural farm roads – from pavement to gravel - in the areas hardest hit, and by a lack of serious maintenance in recent years. Locals are joining local snowplow crews to keep the roads drivable, even as the snow continues to fall. One local, a farmer in the Northpoint province of Lessovik who has taken to the streets plowing from his farm truck, told the Herald, “We haven’t seen a blizzard this bad in years. I don’t really think any of us expected it to be quite this bad this time around.” When asked what compelled hum to drive his own truck to plow, he did not hesitate. “My farm was fine when I left, and my neighbors have been calling all day talking about how deep they’re in it. They’d do the same thing for me, so I got to do the same for them.”

Governors Philip Kozera (FUP) of Lessovik and Amanda Pisula (FUP) of Gilkesson have declared states of emergency and mobilized their respective state guards to help ensure clear roadways and deliver aid to those in need. Governor Peter Benson of Forbedst has proactively declared one as well, as the storm’s trajectory predicts it will pummel through the western state before dissipating at sea. Meanwhile, Chancellor Ryan has issued a statement, offering condolences for the lives lost, praising the emergency responders, and promising to “meet with the governors or the Congress of Governors to discuss next steps in preparing for future climate events.”

As the global climate crisis unfolds, experts predict that Ostaja will see wetter, colder winters, and drier summers.

Football rivalry intensify in the new year's winter celebration

Central Baku, Federal Administrative Krauka of Baku
The Flaming Matyr Square
5:10 P.M

Baku - The winter snow began pouring down on the city of Baku, it's a beautiful site to many as it gives a romantic and relax vibe, as the new year is soon to be arrived by midnight, while this may seen enjoyable on the outside, but for the football ultras, it's another story.

The Revolutionary People's Police's Security Control Unit or SCU has been sent to the city's suburbs and city center to prepare for the worst of any kind, football violence, it was not uncommon to see football violence in Kamilistan, but for this year, it was the worst they have seen. SCU Units began to set up barricades around area they suspected there would be an all out brawl between the rival club's supporters. With armored van patrolling the streets of Baku, and a line of SCU officers forming a line in some areas.

Hundreds to a thousand of Baku Original FC fans began to march through the streets of the city, with the club's banner raising up high and a convoy of cars honked throughout the march, some of the fans were carrying rods or small knives, ready to fight when there is one, the words "All the Baku areas is my home, and the Blue Tigers are the crying ones, to the Northerners too" were chanted by the crowds of ultras, it was not long after that a report of a major fight took place in the Northern part of Baku. The Northern Bay FC, a North Baku-based football club was hated by the BO FC supporters.

Rival club supporters of the Northern Bay and Baku Original began to fight against one another, with some using rods to beat each other, the SDU was immediately called in to the area, firing rubber bullets in the air and tear gas at the rioters, before they were subsequently got attacked by the ultras, some armored vans were lit on fire as the ultras began to fought both sides. For Sumgait FC supporters, they were held back by the SCU unit, as they began to disperse though some cars were lit on fire. Northern Bay supporter fought with the SDU unit, using batons, sticks and metal rods, due to this, some of the SDU were seriously injured by the ultras, but for the Baku supporters, things just got more violent, with 2 confirmed death on SCU side, and 1 dead on the supporters side.

It taken them 2 more hours before dispersing the supporters, with 130 arrest made by the SCU. After the incident, SCU unit was place around the supporter's stronghold in order to keep them in order, former Northern Bay player Abdullah Rahim Hassan Moselamani told this was the "most devastating news he heard about the violence", he wished his condolences to the families of the victims.

The arrestees would be charge under the Federation Code 10 for "Inciting violence to the public" and Section Code 2 of the Federation Code 10 for "Attacking and Disobeying Public Authorities"

This is the Capital Stories, wishing everyone a Happy New Year

Speech of MASIHIYYAN NEW YEAR(2023)

Postby Sarawak Darulhana » Sat Dec 31, 2022 3:47 am

SULTANATE OF SARAWAK DARULHANA
HIS ROYAL MAJESTY SULTAN TENGAH III IBRAHIM ALI OMAR SHAH III IBNI ALMARHUM SULTAN TENGAH II IBRAHIM ALI OMAR DHAH INDRASHAH,THE THIRD SULTAN OF SARAWK DARULHANA

Assalamu'alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen, Wabihiee Nasta'eenu 'Alaa Umuiriddunya Wadden, Wassalaatu' Wassalaamu 'Ala Asyarafil Mursaleen, Sayyidina Muhammaddin, Wa'alaa Aalihee Wasahbihee Ajma'een, Waba'du.

Thanks be to Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala who has bestowed His blessing in the form of an opportunity for us to be able to welcome the arrival of the Masihiyyan New Year of 2023.

In 2022, we will be tested with various challenges and obstacles that our people will go through, including me as the Ruler and Sultan of Sarawak Darulhana. We will also go through the MCO phase (Movement Control Order) where we will have to reduce our daily movements.I was also not exempt from the order where I could not visit Sambas as I used to before the PKP.
in 2022 as well, we will witness various events such as the bombing of Gaza by Israel, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the death of Queen Elizabeth II, North Korean aggression, China challenging Taiwan and Japan and so on.

this year, our country Sarawak suffered a fall in reputation due to the stupidity of the Prime Minister. The current government has used the "Lightning Never Strikes Twice" approach to dealing with natural disasters, urban entrepreneurs are busy introducing cockroaches into restaurant kitchens. Some newspaper from South Sarawak say Sultan Haji Ibrahim Ali Omar Shah III's ego is the talk of the town, and hotels are often quarantined zone. Crime, especially related to youth, is completely unknown. The reputation of our country based on "Civil Rights" and "Political Freedom" has plummeted due to our Prime Minister's wrong decisions. As the Sultan, I have fired the Prime Minister and made myself the Prime Minister and Sultan of my country. InshaAllah, I will try to make Sarawak Darulhana a developed and competitive country.

I hope that in 2023, we will both implement our determination and goals. I am also determined to make Sarawak Darulhana a "Progressive Islamic State" where I will oppose threats that are contrary to conservative principles.

HAPPY MASIHIYYAN NEW YEAR AND WISH GOODLUCK FOR NEW YEAR

The Bedston Herald
Top-notch Treylandian news all around the multiverse

Military News
New Treyland starts development on TreyJoos and Mentos Grenade
In a new weaponry campaign called "Ironic And Effective", New Treyland has been working on a grenade made entirely of TreyJoos and Mentos. Publicly-released documents reveal that it is made up of a container surrounded by a thin layer of shrapnel with powdered Mentos inside of it. The grenade will seemingly be activated by pouring a can of soda inside of it, and having the carbon dioxide expand and blow up the grenade. Critics of the weapon are calling it "ineffective" and "somewhat childish," while proponents of it are calling it "ingenious" and "funny in a strategic kinda way."

Foreign import of rifles intercepted by Democratic Treylandian ship
Yesterday a British ship carrying rifles was intercepted by 2 Democratic Treylandian ships on their way to Bedston in the English Channel. All New Treylandian ships were recalled from the area and Bedston Naval Works have offered to build the affected company a replacement ship. The crew of the intercepted ship has been offered safe passage back to the UK by the D.R.T.

Miscellaneous News
Treylandian cupcake deemed "hottest snack item of 2022"
In the 1st annual SNACKY Awards, where delicacies from all around the Treylandian Union are reviewed, the Treylandian cupcake has been deemed the hottest snack item of 2022 by the Snacky Committee. This was one of many victories for Treylandian food in the event, such as bacon-stuffed crust pizza winning "Most delicious protein-packed food" and "Most fulfilling military rations." This event was also a political victory for other nations as the dictatorial Minecraville Empire managed to win an award for their deep-fried cheeseburger bites, further cementing their "supreme food only attainable under [their] ideology."

Member of Treylandian Socialist Board seen at city-wide 2023 New Year's Celebration
In a hopefully good step for Treylandian-Democratic Treylandian relations, a member of the Treylandian Socialist Board (who has chosen to remain anonymous) has been seen drinking punch with Treylandians at the recent New Year's Celebration in Bedston. Eyewitnesses account talking to him like he was "just another New Treylandian" and how "there's really no need for these tensions anymore."

New cultish religion forms called the Cult of the Eternal Reichtangle
People across the nation are living in fear as a new Countryball-related cult sweeps the nation, seeming to worship the rectangular figure known as Reichtangle. Treylandians across the nation are divided on this issue, with some saying this religion is cultish and weird, and others saying it's a group of innovative individuals expressing their religious freedom and beliefs.

Tamara - In a televised address to the nation, President Simon Aioviḱara spoke to the Agausian people on the eve of the new year, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of the past year and outlining his vision for the future.

"As we turn the page on another year, we are faced with both the difficulties and the opportunities that lie ahead," the President said. "But no matter what challenges we face, I have confidence in the resilience and determination of the Agausian people. We have overcome so much in the past year, and I know we will continue to do so in the year to come."

The President highlighted some of the major accomplishments of his administration, including the passing of significant legislation on healthcare reform, infrastructure development, and criminal justice reform. He also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, praising the efforts of soldiers fighting to keep democracy alive.

"Despite the unprecedented challenges we have faced, we have made significant progress in the fight against inflation," Aioviḱara said. "Thanks to the tireless efforts of this government, we are beginning to turn a corner and see the light at the end of the tunnel."

President Aioviḱara also touched on the importance of unity and coming together as a nation, saying, "We may have our differences, but we are all Agausians, and it is our shared values and commitment to one another that make us strong. As we enter the new year, let us resolve to come together and work towards a better, brighter future for all."

The President concluded his address by wishing everyone a happy and prosperous new year and expressing his hope for a brighter future in the months and years ahead.

KHORASAN AGENCY

Large scale terrorist attack against New Year's Eve celebrations

Rudaki Avenue in Dushanbe was the scene of a gun battle between security forces and Hezb-i Islami jihadists on New Year's Eve as a popular night club came under attack. At around 10;30 PM local time, gunmen entered the Golshan night club after gunning down the bouncer at the front door. Upon entering, the gunmen began to fire indiscriminately as civilians attempted to escape through emergency exists or seek hiding spots inside if they could not make it out. Dushanbe police special operations were rapidly mobilized as patrol officers secured the area and exchanged fire with the gunmen who were expecting a fight with security forces. The 2nd Airborne Brigade, based in Dushanbe, also prepared a direct action force in the event the military needed to back up the police.

Police special operations arrived on scene at 11:50 PM local time, with patrol officers already involved in a firefight against gunmen armed with automatic weapons, hand grenades, and grenade launchers. A gunman wearing a bomb vest would run out of the front door and was liquidated by security forces. By 12:00 AM, police special operations had made entry to the club through a rear door. After an hour of methodically clearing the building, all gunmen were liquidated. In total, 9 gunmen were liquidated by security forces. The number of civilian dead is still being counted, but police involved in the counterterrorist operation estimate at minimum 30 civilian casualties.

This attack in Dushanbe marks a major escalation for Hezb-i Islami which had primarily carried out attacks in the south of the country. A smartphone recovered from one of the gunmen contained a video recorded by one of the gunmen, in which he states that the attack in Dushanbe is a "message for the Westernized degenerates that we can attack them anywhere in this country, at any time." It is unknown at this time if the attack will signal an escalation in terrorist attacks around the nation or if this will be an isolated event.

President Zahir is expected to make a statement about the attack in the following hours.

500TH MILLIONAIRE ACCOUNTED FOR AS TREASURY AXE FALLS
Sunday 1st January 2023

Gorinsk - New figures just published show that Razenland now has as many as five hundred dollar millionaires, with three newcomers added on the final day of 2022 to the league table of the country’s growing wealthy elite.

The newcomers to the realm of the super rich are Konstantin Gagloyev, Fiodar Tereshchenko and Mikhail Chesnokov. Fifty-year-old Gagloyev (net worth reputedly $2,4m) owns a small fleet of cargo vessels used primarily for shipping bulk aggregates. Gagloyev started his company in 1998 after buying an out-of-use car ferry and using it to establish a popular crossing to some of Razenland’s satellite islands. He now owns his hometown football team, and has invested a lot of his earnings in improving its modest facilities over the years.

Fiodar Tereshchenko ($1,9m) is the most controversial addition to the list, as his daughter, Elena Tereshchenko, serves in government as Director of the Ministry of Construction and Housing. Fiodar Tereshchenko is head of the family business, which comprises a cement works and a construction firm. Tereshchenko, aged sixty, has been able to secure several new contracts in the two years since the current government was formed, and is heavily involved in the work to build a new port town in the far north of the country.

Mikhail Chesnokov ($1,4m) started out with cafes and, later, bars, but has made his new-found fortune in owning a strip club, a nightclub and a casino. Chesnokov has spearheaded what he calls “the Razenland poker revolution”, popularising the card game since 2017 with a nationally-acclaimed tournament. Chesnokov has also invested in online poker and dating apps. It is anticipated that Chesnokov’s wealth could skyrocket in the coming years as investments start to pay off. At just thirty-five he is officially Razenland’s youngest millionaire.

Despite their wealth, the three have some way to go to match Razenland’s very richest citizens, such as Uzakbay Panin, whose estimated net worth of $902m makes him probably the most well-off man in society. Panin has interests in a wide range of sectors, from manufacturing to marketing. In 2006, Panin bought the licence to Razenland’s only active oil field, and has just been granted an extension to work it for a further thirteen years to 2035. He has however been barred from building any more oil rigs, forcing him to use near-thirty-year-old rigs to find continued success.

The licence extension has brought criticism on the government, which is trying to push a green agenda, but the caveat that no new oil rigs be built is supposed to be taken in good faith as a sign that the government is winding down its commitment to extraction of fossil fuels.

Panin is one of almost five hundred multi-millionaires set to be caught out by the treasury’s surprise tax on the super wealthy, announced by President Volotka in his New Year’s Day televised address. The drastic taxation measure will claim 75% of all personal earnings from the last year above a $5m threshold. The move is expected to net the treasury some $2.8bn - or 13,2bn kronor, to use the national currency. Annual tax revenues generally only fetch around $8bn into the government coffers, so this uplift will be very welcome, as the government looks to make good on its pledge to build new hospitals and invest in training for medical staff, among its various initiatives. Panin alone will be forced to contribute tens of millions in the tax raid, but the newly listed trio, Gagloyev, Tereshchenko and Chesnokov, will not be expected to pay anything towards the scheme.

It is expected that Razenlandian government spending will in 2023 year top 10bn USD for the first time.

Veteran police spokesman announces Labour leadership run
Christchurch, Drongonia

Labour's longtime policing spokesman Kenneth Wang has announced he'll be running as part of the race to replace outgoing leader Sarah Ellice. He made the announcement via a post on Peaker, adding that he is "looking forward to getting the job".

Wang joined Labour in 2006 after serving as a criminal justice lawyer and advocate in Nelson. After Labour's tight victory in the 2012 General Election, Wang was appointed Minister of Police and Minister of Justice by former Prime Minister Ron Jacobson. Since Labour losing power in 2017, Wang has served as the party's Police and justice spokesperson, vocally opposing many of the Government's anti-crime initiatives, largely branding them as "ineffective and authoritarian".

Wang says he wants to run for the party's leadership to "stand up for what's right" and "make sure Labour can be trusted as a party of law and order". Wang is generally considered to be a part of the party's minority 'conservative-left' faction. The faction consists of six Labour MPs, most of which are older and more senior members.

Political analysts are split on whether or not Wang will have enough support from within the party's caucus to gain any momentum. Former Labour MP and columnist Michael Percat believes that Wang is "too conservative" to gain any traction. "Wang would bring the party more toward the centre, which is absolutely not what Labour's members or management should be aiming for, with an increasingly authoritarian National Party."

However, TVDG Political Editor Patrick Gomer believes that Wang could represent a good balance for the party. Gomer said during a podcast that "Wang represents a great deal for Labour. They get their party in with him as the leader as he's moderate enough to get swing voters onboard, but he's left enough to do it without losing their base."

Wang is the second Labour MP to announce his run, following Langford MP Phoebe Schofield's annnouncement a fortnight ago. It is expected that at least two more MPs will announce their leadership before the race starts on the 21st of January. The vote will conclude on the 30th of January and Ellice will officially resign from the party's leadership on the 31st of January.
