“Is it true what they say of the Queen?” Asked Dariano as their carriage rolled up towards the famed Ahamibaga.

“It shall have to depend on what they say,” said Adela looking to her second eldest stepson. She rolled her eyes slightly at the use of the word ‘they’. “Though I go as far as to say that you should make no assumptions based on rumors.”

Dariano smiled. The prince, the second born of King Jayas by his first wife, the late Queen Kamalika was the tallest amongst his siblings, standing at an inch over six feet. He was a well built man, muscular and fit, his cleanly shaven visage considered quite handsome. He had the strong jaw and sharp features of his father and dark eyes, hair, and skin of his late mother. His hair was cut shortly with tight curls. A faint horizontal scar slashed its way under right eye. The second prince despite his great size had long lived in the shadow of his older brother, the Crown Prince of the Meyarines.

In this regards, Dariano had decided to be everything that his weak precious brother was not. Fierce and strong and unabashed in his more roguish and rakish pursuits. All of which had seen to Adela to be aspects of character that he shared with her cousin the Queen of Turanda.

“Are they rumors if they are true?” asked Alakas as he turned a page of his novel, the second he had read on the journal from tropical island city of Kela to the arid coastal port of Bendas.

Dariano laughed, while Adela snapped her fan at him, mimicking the mannerisms of her most august aunt, the Queen of Genes. She now too understood the versatility of a good fan for a Queen when dealing with her dynasty.

Prince Alakas was the third son of King Jayas, barely a year younger that Dariano. Indeed, it seemed that King Jayas and the late queen had had great affection towards one another. They had had three children in swift succession, having three sons in three years before the late queen must have become exhausted. Having only marked her second year as queen and have had her own child she could understand the instinct.

Alakas lacked his brother’s height, standing seven inches shorter than him. He was finely built, thin and studious in his nature. His skin was unblemished was a lovely shade darker than his brothers, a lovely mahogany to Dariano’s sandalwood. His features sharper, his eyes, lined with long lashes, were so dark they looked black, his hair longer and more wavy than curly as it fell around his ears. He was pleasing to eye surely, though in a far subtler way, for his light shown from within from his intellect and maturity. He observed, often silently, and understood far more than most realized.

It was this contrast that Adela thought he would pair well in complements for her cousin. The tempering of her tempest.

The Queen of the Meyarines opened her mouth to respond but was cut off as the carriage came to a stop before the palace. The footman opened the door. Alakas closed his book, tucking it under his arm as the door opened. Adela looked to her stepsons. “Do behave yourselves,” she said as she stepped out onto the steps and descended to the ground.

“One imagines,” Alakas said, following her out, “to win the queen—“

Dariano stepped out next, grinning as he looked up at the grandeur of the palace, “—we must do the exact opposite.”

A servant entered the drawing room of the palace and bowed to the Queen of Turanda.

“Your Majesty, Her Majesty the Queen of the Meyarines has arrived with the princes.”

There was the sharpness of the sudden silence in the room as Valeriana stopped playing, suddenly engrossed in the development. Oiyora smiled and looked to Natalie and Xarabar. “I suppose now we shall see. They have arrived.” She looked to the servant. “Escort them here shall you?”

“Yes ma’am.”

A servant bowed before Queen Adela, welcoming her and her stepsons to Ahamibaga and leading them through the same path that the other royals had earlier taken.

Xarabar grinned as he reached over to the plate of sweets, selecting on of the buttercream cakes that Oiyora had mentioned. Natalie raised an eyebrow. She smelt the whiff of mischief afoot in regards to her cousin. “You are not going to go to meet them?”

“Of course I shall meet them,” Oiyora said simply with a false innocence into her smile as she shrugged her shoulders. Of course, if it had been just Adela, she would have met them as she had Natalie and Xarabar. Though not as close, Adela was surely one family member no one dared disliked, the great calm of the dynasty. “I shall simply do it here, once they arrive.”

Queen Adela raised herself up to her full height as she was greeted with the Turandan servant, surprised with this. Adela was a regal woman of twenty-seven. Not beautiful. Regal. That was the word that had been most often ascribed to her. She had dark brown skin, her hair styled simply in an empress braid. She was the same height as Alakas, and one could have mistaken her for an elder sister of the young men, for she hardly matched the misconception of the stepmother.

Adela wore a graceful empire waist dress that was a soft lilac made from the finest of linens that fluttered as she moved. Never one for gray flashiness, believing the power of her position best carried itself in her modesty, she wore only a thin gold necklace that matched her earrings and the cord about the dresses waistline.

She lifted her skirts as she followed the servant through the corridors of the palace and held her head high as she swept into the drawing room, her stepsons coming in on her heels.

Purple was the clear favored color of the Meyarineo royals. Prince Dariano and Prince Alakas wore fashion in the style of the Genoise. Dariano’s dark purple fi ipari trousers hugged his lower body like plaster, his sleeveless tunic was deep mauve and well fitted and with a plunging neckline that showed off his chest. Alakas wore a pastel purple set of fi ipari trousers, paired with a light vest and white buttoned shirt that was cut triangularly as to expose his flat stomach and forearms.

“Cousin,” Oiyora said, rising from her seat and making her way to Adela, taking her hands into her own kisses each side of her cheek. She liked Adela, even if it was her brother Teddy whom she liked more, as they had gotten their thrones in the space of a year within one another and were closer in age. Though he was hardly an expert on marital advice. “It is good to see you Adela, welcome to Turanda. Please, won’t you join us, we were just having the coffee and cakes served, weren’t we Natalie?”

“Certainly,” Adela said, exchanging kisses with Oiyora. She had never had a younger sister. She imagined that had she, they might have been like Oiyora or Natalie. Though to be fair she had never been particularly interested in such a possibility. “Though I imagine that it might have been a grander welcome had we met in the pavilion no?”

Adela made her way to a seat at the table. She smiled to Natalie and Xarabar. “It’s lovely to see you, Your Royal Highnesses. If I may, allow me to introduce my stepsons, Prince Dariano and Prince Alakas. Boys?” She gestured for them to introduce themselves. It was odd she thought. She wasn’t nearly old enough to be their mother, though she was legally. And she was the eldest there after Xarabar.

“Your Majesty,” Prince Alakas said with a stiff bow. “An honor to meet you.”

“Your Majesty,” Prince Dariano said with a bow, taking a step forward to take up the Queen of Turanda and kissing the back her hand. “It is truly a pleasure.”

Natalie beamed at her other cousin. Adela’s levelheaded nature had always been so admirable by her. The great calm in the storm of their family’s many fiery and strong personalities. She grinned as the princes introduced themselves, though breaking to focus back on Adela.

“Please, we are all friends here. You remember Bary,”

Xarabar half chuckled as he bit into his cake. It seemed Bary was firmly a nickname here to stay. “It’s lovely to see you again, Your Majesty.”

Adela laughed as she took her seat, looking to the crown prince. Where there had been such great controversy over the matter of Natalie’s sister Helena’s choice of spouse, there had been no such complaints from anyone in regards of Xarabar. Though being a future king in one’s own right doubtless aided in that regard.

“It is good to see you too,” Adela said, “Bary.”

Oiyora smiled as her eyes took in the two princes. Physically, the tall one, Dariano she believed, though admittedly she had not paid that much attention as to which was which, was quite the looker, scar and all. Her gazed drifted downwards, admiring and approving of the steep cut of his tunic as he kissed her hand.

“I am sure it is,” Oiyora said with a glint in her eye. “Please, both of you,” she said looking to the other brother, Alakas, and extracting herself from the touch of the taller one back to her seat. “Do join us. Have either of you have a taste for Zagra coffee?”

“I,” Dariano said making his way to a seat next to Queen Adela, his brother following behind, “do not believe I have had the honor of having any. Though I admit that I look forward to trying a taste of the Turandan delicacy.” He punctuated his words with a sly look to the Queen. She was beautiful as the rumors had said.

Alakas scoffed. “Zagra is in Leriya,” the prince said matter of factly, putting his book in his lap as he took his seat. “I hear it is a most exquisite strain, Your Majesty has a keen eye for finery in your home.”

“Most fine,” Dariano said.

Xarabar leaned over the shoulder of his wife. “Well it seems we shall not have to worry in any small part in the open mindness of the princes,” the crown prince said.

“A game truly afoot,” Natalie said softly.

“You seem well versed on the strains of coffee Prince Alakas,” Xarabar said. “It makes for the most delicious of conversation does it not?”

“I have always been a firm believer in the philosophy,” Prince Alakas said, “that one should be well versed in a wide array of many subjects. Coffee is a popular import and beverage throughout the Meyarines and our neighbors. But one should be prepared to discuss any from the weather to agriculture, to the political ramifications of the state of the Andejanes Strait in my opinion.”

“Quite the philosophy, one I believe that more of the aristocratic class should adopt,” said Xarabar.

“You fancy yourself a jack of all trades,” Natalie more said than asked, looking to the Queen of Turanda. “Quite an admirable trait many would say.”

Oiyora took her cup into her hand as a servant moved to the table, pouring fresh porcelain cups for Adela, Dariano and Alakas on turn. She was at least pleased that Bary had done her the favor of securing her knowledge of which brother was which.

“You know,” she said, “what they say of jacks of all trade. They are masters of none. And I do not believe that coffee however delicious can truly serve as the basis of a good conversation.”

Natalie looked at her cousin with annoyance, already seeing her backsliding. Surely she couldn’t possibly have no interest in conversation. Did she herself not love to go one about the finery of the her court. And yet now suddenly she found it not worth conversation. The Crown Princess set down her cup. “Josephine.”

“It is quite alright, Your Royal Highness,” Prince Alakas said with a small tight smile, even has his older brother grin, amused with the Queen’s rubbing of his smug little brother. Alakas looked to queen, focusing on her eyes. “A master of none, yes, but still superior to the master of one. Surely you have no interest in anyone so lacking, Your Majesty.”

“No,” Oiyora said swiftly, “I have never been a woman to keep around a man who was found to be lacking, Your Highness, which makes one wonder how long your stay may be turn out to be here in the walls of Ahamibaga.”

Prince Alakas’ eyes went wide with shock and fury that mixed within his chest with a rapid heat. She couldn’t possibly have just said what she had said. It was entirely improper and absolutely infuriating. At his side Prince Dariano chuckled darkly, leaning back in his chair.

“Then I imagine I may never leave these halls for I am lacking in nothing. At least, Your Majesty, not anywhere where it counts the most.”

Xarabar half choked and half laughed at the comment by Dariano and Natalie looked at her cup with her lips pursed together. The crown princess herself was not unused to the classically aristocratic craft of weaving innuendo in with fine words. It was practically made sport in Genes and with a cousin like Josephine one could not easily become a blushing beauty in regards to what one said.

“Is that so?” asked Xarabar. His family was far more up right about such things, though he had gradually been corrupted by the influence of his Valwa in-laws. Now he couldn’t help but be amused by the confidence in the prince.

“I assure you,” Adela said with a sly smile, holding her cup of coffee with the elegance of any courtier, looking to both Oiyora and the Crown prince and princess, “that if they take after their father,” she said the world almost breathlessly, thinking of her husband, “you shall find neither one of them lacking in any regard to the bedroom.”

Dariano and Alakas both looked to Adela with wide disgusted looks. No young man like to be in such a way compared to their father, whether it be for good or ill particularly from a woman who would surely have the authority on the matter, which made it all the more painful for there was doubtless truth in her words.

All the while the Queen of the Meyarines only smiled smugly in her assertion. She was well of aware of the way that things were discussed with hidden meanings, but then that was one of the benefits of being a queen, she did not, under the right circumstances have to be so opaque as she had the authority to be clear.

“You need only hope that are as well skilled with their instruments as His Majesty, and then it shall be like a grand symphony.”

Xarabar found himself choking once more as a bit of coffee went down the wrong pipe in his for if surprise. His eyes matched that of the other two princes. He pounded on his chest, trying not to choke further or to laugh at the ridiculousness of the curve the conversation had taken.

Natalie’s head snapped up to attention as she gave a sharp sucking in of her breath, covering her mouth in shock at Adela. She expected such talk from Josephine but from Adela it was an entirely different matter.

“Adela, my god.”

“My god, indeed,” Adela said teasingly.

“Ugh,” Dariano said. “Please stop.”

“Indeed,” Alakas added. “Must you see so?”

Adela shrugged her shoulders. “I thought it only worth mentioning as best for clarity for everyone. As I am sure it was in the thoughts of everyone seated.”

“No,” Alakas asserted. “I do not believe it was.”

“Well,” Natalie said, “with the matter of princes’… equipment settled, then perhaps we can steer the conversation back to other matters. Anything. Quite literally anything else.”

“Oh, my dear,” Xarabar held his wife’s hand. “I do not know if this conversation can be repaired after that.”

“I find myself in agreement with Bary,” Oiyora said with a delighted look on her face, having found the entire exchange between her cousins and the look on the faces of the princes to be positively hilarious. “I do not believe even I can salvage such a conversation when it has been so expertly and satisfactorially dashed by my fellow queen.”

Oiyora rose from her seat. “I believe we all require air. A game lawn ball perhaps? Come,” the queen said, gathering her skirts. “It shall be fun!”
