Encroachment RP

IC | OOC | Dispatch

This roleplay is for members of THE WESTERN ISLES ONLY. If you are not on the map, you cannot participate in this roleplay. However, if you are about to come onto the map feel free to speak up in the OOC thread (this one) but please stay out of the IC thread until you become a member.

Intro

Gday gday! So it appears I have some dead weight in McHenry’s Port to cut loose. And what better way to cut something loose then by absolutely ramming it into the ground? Essentially, this roleplay is mainly between Razzgriz (acting as Razzgriz in character) and myself (acting as McHenry’s Port). Whilst McHenry’s Port is a technically a territory of Razzgriz, it has enjoyed autonomy and guarantees that Razzgriz would defend it in the event of an attack. This is important to note when considering McHenry’s Port is overwhelmingly made up of employees of the Henrite Security Services - which is one of the foremost private military corporations in TWI. The HSS has come under controversy for its failings to protect the Balniki Gold Reserve in Keverai, amongst the general baggage and bad blood you would have if you were a country run by by essentially mercenaries under the guise of a subdivision of Razzgriz (though autonomous). Their friends - Razzgriz - turn on them, seeing the HSS as an opportunity to expand their defence capabilities and as a test of their expansionist capabilities. On the other hand, the HSS has very few allies - at least not any powerful or loyal enough to send support in the face of an Iszkari blitzkrieg.

So we’re left in the situation that what will essentially occur is a shadow coup where the HSS asks the Governor to step aside, and the HSS operates within McHenry’s Port as a business within the country (although they will eventually become part of the military proper - at least the ones who stay at McHenry’s Port).

So there’s also heaps of disloyalty in the ranks - people who think that going against Balnik by sending mercenaries to Roendavar to conduct operations against mercenaries from the HSS already hired by Balnik is not a good idea, and many of the mercenaries think that its at best disloyalty to good customers and at worst the Governor turning into a bleeding heart dove who plays politics instead of fulfilling contracts. This has some rather opportunistic governments in Roendavar and Keverai surprised when many accept offers from the government to get the mercenaries to join the security apparatuses from what historically were merely contractors they hired. This easily could happen on a grander scale. Mercenaries probably wouldn't be able to get back to McHenry’s soon enough to successfully defend the capital, or alternatively they think the Governor would simply surrender having been shown to not properly defend his country.

Eitherway, there’s a lot of division and a big weak spot that Razzgriz and many other nations in TWI will be able to exploit. This RP mainly focuses on the dismantling of the mercenaries in the sense that they are a business which operates in a way that is independent from Razzgriz or other governments.

The invasion will be quick, quiet and relatively precise - the war would be over within the space of a few days in-character.

What I’m thinking

Much of the main storyline is rather self-contained between Razzgriz and I in an out-of-character sense. However, there are some details we can infill and room for people to fit in within the storyline. In addition to this, the consequences of the storyline can have wider implications that people probably could deal with as a part of the roleplay itself. That’s the sort of places where I’d imagine people could fit in. So the following is generally a bunch of ways you could get involved in the RP - feel free to suggest other ideas too, these are by no means fixed or concrete. It’s merely just examples of what roads people could go down if they’re keen on getting involved.
  • I’d imagine nations in the Southern Sea or those with security interests in it would be fairly concerned by what could be considered as a ‘first move’ by Razzgriz to annex McHenry’s Port - a predecessor to much larger expansionist plans.
  • Generally speaking, the annexation of a country infested with people who have worked for various juntas, rebels, shady corporations and government authorities is going to either be met with happiness, suspicion, concern (for what razzgriz may now learn about) or concern (that there is a straight up invasion)
  • You could happen to have contractors of the HSS within your nation doing other jobs - maybe offering them visas, citizenship or ongoing protection until the McHenry’s Port situation resolves itself may be a way to build some goodwill with people whose loyalty could become very helpful into the future.
  • There’s obviously going to be some refugees - so we’re gonna need nations to accept said refugees (who may or may not pose an elevated security risk).
  • Maybe Razzgriz loses some friends, gains a few or perhaps perceptions of Razzgriz get soured?
  • Maybe governments may now be forced to grapple with the reality that the Southern Sea is simply not a place of soft power and economic development but that hard power - armed force and conflict - is a reality in what often is relatively tranquil seas.

These sorts of avenues could be pursued in the news thread, or in an IC post in this rp… up to you, I’m not particularly bothered where exactly the ideas are explored as its quite possible that the rp could simply be me and razzgriz posting. That being said, I’m not against people writing ICs for the RP and I’m quite welcoming to the idea if its fits in and makes sense for it to come into the thread rather than news, twitter or citizens.

Final notes

So, let’s get collaborating! Let me know what you’re keen to do and we can go from there.
Feel free to speak up this thread if what you’re planning to do has already been discussed to show your interest. Also feel free to simply keep track of this and drop in when there’s something that piques your interest.

My idea is that this is whole rp is over by Christmas, or at the latest, by the new year.

I'd like to believe my navy would make a habit of patrolling those waters as we consider all of Southern Argus of vital security interest. We'd definitely have a presence commercially in the port, too. How large of an interest is up to how you guys want this story to go.
I'd be a real socialist if I thought it could actually work.

As Roendavar had somewhat of a role regarding McHenry's Port,I think it would be best if I discussed that here and the plans moving forward in the perspective of my nation.

Conflict in Gael has revealed that destabilization has been grander and far reaching than we hoped. Mainly, McHenry's Port, particularly the HSS, has been a source of manpower for terrorism and destabilization attempts, especially in Roendavar. Thus, the government in Roendavar has decided that it was time that we went outside of our borders and play the same game that has been brewing and will eventually blow over in the future.

This is why we're in McHenry's Port. Roendavar knows that it has more legitimacy and diplomatic advantages in the current geopolitical climate that we have than Balnik. Roendavar also knows that it could outspend Balnik in whatever they may be paying the HSS, considering surpluses in the defense budget for a force that is significantly minor and, some might even say, non-existent. This is why we have approached the Governor and asked that their loyalties be shifted and expressed our willingness to hire a majority of their manpower on an unprecedented scale. As mentioned above, the Governor has agreed, with reservations, and that has had an effect on the ranks of the HSS.

We see this as a solution that is the best of both worlds. We are able to siphon manpower away from Balniki hands and into Roendavarian defense while simultaneously destabilizing and, eventually, sponsoring the annexation of a thorn in our side for the last two to three years. This is also why you might see Roendavar transferring as much as it can of the ranks of the HSS with incentives in our home country before the entire thing blows over and, when asked for our side, we would gladly profess that we wholeheartedly support Razgrizz, an ally of us for almost a millennia now, and that we would do everything we can to help build during and after the invasion. This is, of course, another ploy for us to dig in McHenry's Port and get a return on what we've spent so far.

This is not without flaw, however, as this act would have grave consequences within Gael, but that is a story for another RP.

Moving forward, I will pursue activity in this RP in whatever way I can based on what I have discussed so far. On the background, we would continue in our plans to take in whoever is loyal to Roendavar, speed up the destabilization within the HSS, and, officially, express our cautious yet definitive support of the government of Razgrizz and its methods to ensure regional stability. This would be in the form of news posts, maybe some League posts, and IC posts in the IC thread if I am asked to do so by its project heads.

Overall as a relatively major player in the Southern Sea, Aprosia would have a somewhat conflicted view of the conflict and regarding individual details, I am not yet completely certain of the wider response Aprosia would have here.

So with the negative aspects to Aprosia here, of course an invasion of McHenry is seen as an issue and as a potential precedent for further expansionism. Razzgriz properly controlling McHenry poses a potential issue for the movement of the Aprosian Revolutionary Navy around the area of Saundesh-Sanguse-McHenry-Razzgriz, limiting one of the path the Aprosian navy could take to the western part of the Southern Seas and South Gael. Of course as of the current situation, Aprosia has no reason to move its navy in any meaningful way to those areas but the situation can change in the future, when this would truly become a bigger problem. Additionally, I am not certain how Aprosia-Razzgriz relations are so that adds a further uncertainty of the worry regarding this path.

Furthermore even if Aprosia is worried of expansionist tendencies in Razzgriz and a potential limit to naval movement, Aprosia in all honesty does not consider the Razzgriz armed forces to be a major threat. Aprosia is rather confident in its naval and long-range aviation capabilities.

On a more positive note, at least the mercenaries in McHenry are limited.

As for responses, most I would see from the Aprosian government is a "naughty naughty" statement, opposing the invasion but not much else. While this statement would be in the news, I did at one point present the idea of a post regarding a meeting of the Aprosian Revolutionary Armed Forces regarding the military strength of Razzgriz and the potential strategic outcomes of this invasion.

Additionally for this RP, I also presented an idea to Ainslie on using the Southern Seas Journal as a more objective media outlet regarding this conflict. Just posted a news post using them and my plan is to establish them as a Southern Sea focused "third party" media, allowing people (including myself) to post more objective takes on events and not just through national news organizations or domestic pieces of media.

Najimam would be concerned about Razzgriz invading McHenry's Port. Najimam would recently hire HSS to help in protecting the military supply chain and assist the Armed Jihadists in the Luvahira Archipelago crisis.

Our response would be to send additional troops and aid to Najibahr in the Sawneek Atoll and open it to refugees coming from McHenry. Some of the refugees will choose to settle in Najimam, a few of them might do questionable things...

Additionally, Najimam would see this as an opportunity to benefit from the expertise of HSS's personnel. It would give them visas and convince a few of those who have worked in different countries to establish a new private security company in Najimam.

In the future, this new company will have very close ties with the HSS and both will regularly share security data and personnel between them. Of course, all of these actions will have consequences, I'm excited for what's to come. Will highlight most of this in news articles.
