The Journey Westward (Meillur Only)

Postby Nemidia » Thu May 26, 2022 6:26 pm

Minixus Kaenid watched with no small amount of eagerness and excitement as the various ships of the expeditionary fleet were loaded, four clippers, a windjammer, a frigate and a large merchantman, converted into a fleet resupply tanker and tender, all sat at the extremely busy dock, however, despite its business, it was relatively empty of unnecessary onlookers. Minixus had felt, in these tense and violent times, that careful secrecy and confidentiality was essential to the operation at hand, least it be misunderstood as a preparing invasion force, especially given that some weapons were indeed being loaded on the ships, although outside of the armories of the frigate, none were turkey military grade, being mostly handguns and a popular sporting rifle common to Nemidia, which would be potentially essential later down the line, if Minixus’s plans went according to plan, that was. He was sure that his wife had thought he had been having a manic episode, and he probably had been, when he got up late one night with the inspiration to start making his plans and preperations, and his hard work showed on his face, as he has not slept a full nights sleep, only getting the occasional nap, for almost a week straight.

It was coming close to time for the fleet to embark, and the fleets commander, Rear Admiral Vacoby Noren, approached the emperor with a salute, which the emperor gave a nod in return, as the Rear Admiral have his report.

“Most of our supplies and kit are loaded sir, and we are finishing loading the vehicles and other equipment we are bringing. We should be ready to depart in a few hours.”

Minixus nodded, they were ahead of schedule, which would make them all that much harder to predict.

“Very good, continue with your preparations and depart as soon as the fleet is ready.”

The Rear Admiral simply responded with “Yes, my emperor.”

Minixus had hand chosen the man specifically, rather than a higher ranking officer, he felt that the sudden disappearance of a proper fleet admiral would be suspicious to those who were watching the NIMDF closely, and so, had decided to leave them be, and take a lower ranking, and relatively new and little known, but very capable, officer instead. The same had been true of the ships and other equipment. Minixus had, and still was, planning and executing this plan with extreme caution, even for him, no one, outside the empress and those whom he felt absolutely needed to know had been informed, and if things went well, the only hint something was amiss would be when the fleet reported its success and Minixus made an announcement on said success. Minixus, of course, knew better than to believe that everything would go that smoothly, and had taken precautions, a new vessel, or more correctly, four of them, would also be jointing the fleet, something that only he, the empress and a handful of officers, most of whom would be going themselves, actually knew about.

Minixus had done everything he could to ensure that this journey to the west would succeed, now all he could do now was watch things play out.

Marijani picked her way through the busy docks, elegantly lifting the hem of her black dress, as she made her way to her husband’s side. For the outing to oversee her husband’s particular venture she had dressed simply, more interested in joining in watching the loading of the expedition’s ships than drawing any unwanted attention to herself. She had indeed been alarmed by Minixus’ excitement over the whole thing. Marijani had always been a more realistic person, so journeying off into the unknown was not something she would have thought of on her on.

Not that she was intrigued by it. And her father’s sense of business had ignited in her at the thought of what might be uncovered by it. After all, it was best to join if there was a route around the eastern edge of the continent or more, it would be best if she knew. She put her hands behind her back as she step up next to Minixus, her eyes following the ships. She herself had even gone to the effort of finding a perfect addition to the expedition.

“All going according to plan my dear?” Marijani asked with a small smile.

As the empress spoke with the emperor, Mzuzi Mfenyana, a cartographer who had served in the Celestial Army, embarking with General Sikali on the planned campaign against Imarati, waited a few feet away. Mzuzi had been the one who had led the mapping out of the islands of the Andajanes Archipelago, before going the Empress on their campaigns. When Minixus had offered homes for those of Marijani’s men willing to stay, Mzuzi had take up the offer to stay in Caraxia. He had been working making a map of Nemidia, but when his empress had told him of this expedition, how could he say no?

Mini is nodded, thinking over everything and said “Yes, so far the preparations are going smoothly, even the two seaplanes that have been assigned to the task force have been loaded onto the frigate.”

Minixus had ordered the measure as a way for the task force to investigate farther inland of any landmass they found, without risking a exploration party by traveling through in-scouted terrain, or at the very least they would do so with a pair of eyes in the sky to help them.

Minixus watched a set of soldiers helping load another box of supplies, medical and food, and many drums of water, there was no guarantee that the fleet would be able to resupply during their trip, so they were bringing as much supplies as they could bring, hence the dedication of a full ship to the purpose of supplies and fuel.

He looked to his wife with a smile, and exhausted smile, but one full of life and with a spark of purpose in his eyes, and then said “You should tour the ships for yourself, I think you will find the preparations quite interesting.” He then offered his wife a hand, so that he could lead her along around the fleet.

Marijani took Minixus’ hand without hesitation. Her eyes followed his own gaze towards the loading of the supplies. A small knot formed in her chest at the sight of all the preparation. It eerily reminded her of the build up before her late first husband’s expedition on the docks of Aukusa City.

She of course knew that this was a very different type of expedition, but still it came with, if different, risks. Exploration had a habit, in the course of humanity to act as a sort of Pandora’s box, opening up the world as they knew it to both good and bad and most likely, and most dangerously, unexpected discoveries.

“I would love a tour of the ships.”
