Grand Duke’s School Sixth Form (OOC/sign-ups)

Postby Glevenschester » Sun Apr 03, 2022 7:29 am

Grand Duke’s Sixth Form is the Grand Duchy’s most elite sixth-form.

It offers Advanced Level Certificates in Humanities, Sciences and Commerce.

It is open to anyone aged 16 to 18 who can either pay the ridiculously high fees of $50,000 NSD per term or (because Grand Duke’s is a registered charity)
achieve scholarships of which there are four: the Geniuses’ Scholarship, the Orphans of Heroes’ Scholarship, the Refugee Redress Scholarship and the Dodging scholarship.

Dear Sir,

From the best enquiries I could make, I have determined that your school will be a satisfactory place for the education of my son, John Arlington. I desire him to have not only every advantage which is to be derived from the best schools, but also to broaden his horizons through travel to foreign lands. I shall convey him to the school in time for the beginning of the next session of classes. I would also request your opinion, on whether it would be best for him to find rooms in the school, or board in the city, for I am extremely anxious to have his education advanced, and I could wish to have him so placed as to promote it.

Full Name: John Lee Arlington
Age: 16
Character’s personality: "Jack" is an energetic man, but his passions lie in pleasure rather than self-improvement. He is fond of fox hunting and sport shooting. He is the heir to a large estate and fortune and he knows it.
character’s stated career aspirations: to follow in his father's footsteps as a civic-minded gentleman farmer
character’s actual career aspirations: to live a life of ease and luxury
Brief character bio: John Fairfax Arlington was born at his family estate, Woodlawn, in Mareyland. He is the son of Colonel Edward Arlington, a retired military officer, and Sarah Ceely, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. He was educated by private tutors and then attended private boarding school. As the only son of Col. Arlington, he is the heir to a large estate.
Languages spoken by character: English, French, Latin (poorly)
Scholarship(s) applied for if applicable and why: None, the tuition shall be paid in full

Your obedient servant,
E. Arlington

Your obedient servant,
E. Arlington

“Dear Colonel Edward Arlington, your son John has been accepted into the school with open arms. We trust he will thrive here and make the Arlington family proud of his achievements.
As regards school vs city, I think you are the best judge of your son’s
ability at restraint, the city has many temptations and related dangers but perhaps he is able to resist the temptations.

Random attacks of violence are kept firmly under control due to the hard work of both campus Police and the police of the Grand Duchy as a whole.

Even what little acts of violence do occur, occur far away from the school due to the fact that criminals in our country tend to look for safety in numbers due to the strong policing previous mentioned.
So it depends whether your son is likely to frequent those areas, of which you are the best judge.”
-Alexandre Christoph, Headmaster of the Grand Duke’s School

Our own public servants and policemen were slaughtered. Of course, this situation could not be allowed to take place in any reasonably law-abiding state. Action was needed. Therefore, I made the decision to authorise military units to disperse rioters, who were attempting to overthrow our government. Utmost care was used to deploy the minimal possible amount of force, however, some elements of the crowd were not receptive to the requests of the authorities, and, unfortunately, lethal force had to be exercised against them. As of this moment, we are investigating links to any terrorist organisations and known provocateurs. By the power vested in me by the Gelevenchester constitution, I hereby declare a state of emergency for the next 72 hours. A curfew will be in place for the duration of this state of emergency, from 6pm to 8am, across Glevenchester city. This is for your own safety, and I look forward to being able to reopen all services fully.

Of course, this crisis was caused by an oil shortage in the Middle East. We are actively taking all possible measures to mitigate price increases as of this moment, and, next week, I will be pleased to unveil a set of measures to attempt to both reduce our reliance on hydrocarbons, and alleviate the grossly inflated prices our citizens pay. However, this is no excuse to engage in blatantly criminal activity. Thank you, and good night.'

Greetings your emminence,

I hope this correspondence finds you in good health. My name is Michele Moreau, I am the Minister of Transportation for the nation of Theyles. My daughter, Jacqueline, would be an idea foreign exchange applicant for your academy. We took the liberty of doing extensive research into schools oriented towards the preparation of students for leadership globally and found that few other schools were able to compare. It would be our honor to have Jacqueline admitted to this fine institution of learning. I have gone ahead and enclosed in this letter her application along with a resume of her qualifications thus far in fields I thought relevant.

Best regards,
Michele Moreau
Minister of Transportation

Full Name: Jacqueline Moreau
Age: 17
Character’s personality: Jacqueline's personality is very much twofold. She puts on a steely exterior and no-nonsense demeanor in the classroom and formal situations, especially due to childhood bullying while attending private school. However, part of this does also come from a genuine difficulty making friends as well. She often struggles to properly express her emotions or show her appreciation even when she hasn't put up a wall between her and another person. Her close friends know that she's a bit shy and introverted, but has a great talent for public speaking and debate.
character’s stated career aspirations: Become a member of the Theylesian People's Assembly, achieve a graduate degree in the social sciences, and lobby for education reform.
character’s actual career aspirations (can be the same or different): Travel the world as an independent author, seeking out interesting people and places for her novels.
Brief character bio:
Jacqueline grew up with high expectations, none of which she ever failed to succeed. Even as a young child, despite being the quietest one in her class, she was able to learn content at an astonishing rate. She was often placed in advanced classes throughout her private school education, which unfortunately meant she also ended up as the target of harrassment. Her steely affect is a result of this early bullying, an impenetrable wall she built so that she could focus more on her education and hobbies than the cruel words of others.
From the age of 6 onwards, she learned various skills expected of her by her parents. Learning Latin, becoming a harp player, writing poetry, examining philosophical texts, all of which she did without question. As she grew older, however, she began to feel more detatched from these talents. They weren't really her hobbies, after all. She was never asked if she wanted to pluck a harp until her fingers bled or spend countless late nights studying for her Latin class on top of her normal schoolwork. The difference between the Jacqueline her parents and the rest of the world saw was a very different person from the Jacqueline she knew.
There was hardly anyone who knew about her passion for novel writing or how she enjoyed cataloguing the native Theylesian wildflowers in the forests near her home until she met her first real friend, Genevieve. Ever since they met at 12, they had been inseparable. Genny was a Swiss immigrant whose parents had moved to Theyles after a boom in their dairy industry. The two shared everything together, from each other's languages to Jacqueline's novel ideas. They even referred to each other exclusively by the nicknames Genny and Lena whenever they were together. Around her 16th birthday, however, Genevieve's family was deported. Jacqueline's mom testified on their behalf, but the immigration tribunal found that the evidence for illegal export of cheese products was overwhelming. With few things tying her to her home, Jacqueline decided to go somewhere far from Theyles to perhaps begin pursuing her true dream of becoming a novelist.

My fellow citizens of Glevenschester,

You have witnessed the deaths of many of our brothers and sisters in the last few days due to riots in our city. While we initially wanted to address the riots by peaceful means, there comes a time where peace cannot be sustained. Sometimes, the anger and pain of a group leads them to take that anger and pain out on others. Make no mistake, we fully acknowledge the reason for the riots and have been working on a solution, but violence was not the answer to our dire circumstances. Protestors were responsible for attacking our public buildings and had even taken lives before we resorted to the last possible measure of sending in the army. If we had failed to address the violence with forceful means, the likelihood of escalation would increase significantly. We cannot allow this. I have walked through our streets and seen the life they foster. Children playing, local business owners setting up shop for the day, stay at home parents starting on the day's chores. Their lives are important too. There's no telling how many others would have died if the rioters were left unchecked in such a lively, bustling city. We will continue to work on the import of petrol, but until then, we shall mourn for the lives of the officers and protestors that were lost due to this senseless violence. I hope you will join me in paying respect to them during the upcoming memorial serivce and that no more precious blood from our people needs to be spilt.
