13/09/1861: The United States of America and the United Mexican States sign the Cortazar-Mayfield Treaty in secret, promising Mexico the return of its former territories of Texas and New Mexico in exchange for military assistance against the Confederacy.

21/10/1861: after a month and eight days of mustering troops along the Rio Grande, Mexico declares war on the Confederacy and within the hour launches a full scale invasion of southern Texas with 90,000 men. A secondary force led by Union General Edward Canby invades western Texas with 10,000 men.
