Dar Al-Badw Academy of Rulership (IC)

Postby Dar Al-Badw » Mon Jul 26, 2021 3:01 pm

The Dar Al-Badw Academy of Rulership is a school preparing royals (and since 1990, privileged commoners)
from 13-16 (girls) or 14-18 (boys) for their duties leading their country or countries.

As well as the traditional royal pursuits, the students are educated in economics, Mixed Martial Arts and, of course, any typical school subjects (apart from sociology, for legal reasons, though Psychology, politics and Anthropology are widely available).

Celina Scian of the Tribe of Fermanagh.
Why was I here?
Right... "to learn." And to collect international experience, which could only be of advantage, if my future career path worked out the way I hoped it would be. I wanted to follow in my Mam's footsteps, become a naval aviator with the SDF-Navy.
Dad had my brothers to give to the MGoL, I wanted to fly.
It wasn't even a secret.
So... here was not a Kyrenaian Younger Academy, though, or a Teressian Boarding School. It was the "Dar Al-Badw Academy of Rulership", where, to royalty and "privileged commoners" got prepared "for their duties leading their country or countries."
It was an Islamic country, too, but if someone got a bit too frisky for my tastes, I had enough daggers on me. And if that didn't help, Kyrenaian Kickboxing. I did that since I was of eight Springs.
Silver hair and red eyes, a bust befitting a fifteen year old Selkie, 1.69 meters tall - I was quite good in school, too, especially in languages. I spoke seven languages, including three German Dialects, Sign Language and Morse Code.
My aim was to get the school year I was here over and go back home and cash in on a promise of my father: If I managed to survive the year and have good grades, he would pay for my license for single-engine planes.
With my bags moved to the dorms or whereever we would be staying - blimey, this was not well organized - and my backpack on my back, filled with materials needed for school, I stepped onto the Academy Grounds.
Well - I was here.

Kieran Sloroimh of the Tribe of Louth.
The soft voice of Gabhála's Ida Corcarhorm of the Tribe of Cork came out of my headphones, the two massive muffs covering my ears and carrying me into a bar, where, illuminated by a singular spotlight, a black piano stood, Eithne Spledrach of the Tribe of Fermanagh behind it. Closeby, wearing a red evening gown, her black hair done up and her blue eyes shining, stood Ida, singing to the jazzy rhythm given by the piano and the drumset in the shadows.
I knew, that the recording came from a studio, the piano was a keyboard and the red dress was a school uniform. Still, her voice was so wonderful, her singing so enchanting, that I could not help but imagine it like that.
I have always been a shy young man, no girlfriend, not many other friends, but close to my family (including my cousin Celina Sloroimh, yes, the BI-Model) and close to music. I owned an electric guitar, which even made the trip with me to this place. It would be in the dorms, or whereever we were supposed to stay, and I would play it at a low volume, but I had it with me.
And here I was, my baggage in the dorms, myself with a backpack at the first day of the new school year at the Dar Al-Badw Academy of Rulership, where I would be prepared to rule my lands as if I was some sort of feudal lord from the Age of the High Kings... the family possessions of the Tradadai-Branch, which would most likely go to my older brother Duncan. If I got to find my own branch or not was written in the stars, but I would prefer to become a musician.
Still, I was here.
Where was everyone else?

Alcott Cherbourg-Stanton
ɴᴏᴡ ᴘʟᴀʏɪɴɢ: OH SHIT I'M FEELING IT

The sullen-looking boy that appeared at the school's gates was a far cry from the motivated and bright individual that the instructors had perhaps been expecting. Loud music blasted from his earbuds; what it was, exactly, could not be determined, but the occasional profanity slipped out. A thin windbreaker was unzipped, revealing a slightly stained grey shirt, giving way to a pair of cargo pants.
He was, in short, very obviously not the sort of child who should be attending a "school of rulership".
A heavy travel-case lay by his side as he waited, bobbing his head slightly to the music. Noticing Kieran, he gave him a short nod of acknowledgement, before removing his earbud and pausing the music.
"Morn'." he mumbled. "Where the hell is everyone else?"

Charlotte "Charlie" Northam
With a slight huff, Celina would find another pupil setting down her case by her, and sitting down on it. Long, well-brushed blonde hair, piercing blue eyes, and a strange flag sown on her seemingly-expensive parka's sleeve marked her as a foreigner as well.

She was also very obviously wealthy; her clothing seemed to be well-made and clean, while on her wrist was a watch - the brand wouldn't be familiar to Celina, but it was still a very high-quality mechanical watch.
But after that, everything fell apart. Her eyes seemed to droop with exhaustion, and she was slouching hard. Every part of her seemed calibrated to use the mininum amount of energy needed to just barely, sort of function.

"...'Ello." the girl said, looking up at Celina, finally. She laid down and moved her case up, using it as a makeshift headrest. "Name's Charlie. Charlotte Northam. Call me Charlie. You get punted in by your parents too?"

Celina Scian of the Tribe of Fermanagh.
I looked a the blonde, her long hair quite luxurious - the flag caught my interest for but a moment, until she introduced herself.
Charlotte Northam, eh?
"Pleasure to meet you, Charlie. I'm Celina Scian of the Tribe of Fermanagh, but please, just call me Cel.", I introduced myself, giving a slight bow. "And yes, something like that... my Father sent me here to collect experience abroad. Honestly, sent me to a Teressian Boarding School or a military academy in the Commonwealth, at least I would speak the blasted language..."
I noticedhow exhausted she seemed.
"You alright there?", I asked.

Kieran Sloroimh of the Tribe of Louth.
Pulling back my own headphones, I shrugged.
"I have no clue.", I admitted without shame, then nodded in the general direction of the two girls conversing. "Those two are here, the Silverhead is a Selkie, too, so I guess, that we are in the right spot." I let a few beats pass. "What music are you listening to?"

Celina Scian of the Tribe of Fermanagh.
"The Polish-Prussian one.", I replied and hopefully confirmed her suspicions. "I speak German in three variants, should be of some use there."
I sighed.
"But, well... here we are.", I looked at Charlie, "To be honest, their entrance forms were... screwed up." I shook my head. "Anyway... I want to join the Navy anyway, so maybe a taste of that would have been interesting."

Kieran Sloroimh of the Tribe of Louth.
"Kieran, from the Free Lands of the Selkie - and I agree.", I told Alcott, "If you like classical, you can like it all you want, but please far away from me... or with headphones."
I let a beat pass.
"Hey, wanna meet up later and listen to music? I have my laptop and my speakers along for the ride, though they should be in the dorms.", I said and grinned, "And I am sure, that I have a cable for your device along as well."

"Ahhh. Yeah, the Prussian-Polish Commonwealth...I have a friend from there. She says the military schools are absolutely brutal. I dunno. They're not for me, I think. I study architecture and history. Or at least, did." She grimanced. "Not sure why my parents decided to pull me out and put me here...and yeah. Why ask for orientation on an entrance form?"

At the mention of the Navy, Charlie perked up. "Oh? Which one? Where you from? I'm from Bayerland."

Alcott Cherbourg-Stanton
"Selkie? Nice." Alcott smiled. "And Kieran...real aesthetic name there. Can't place it...nevermind. I'd love to hang around. I brought my laptop and flash drive too, got a lot more music on that...say, why are you here, by the way?"

I let a beat pass - no need to tell her about my dream of becoming a naval aviator, at least not yet. Didn't want to go all in yet.
"But yeah...", I agreed, "This is a muslim country, they might have something against homosexuals, I get that, but I am sent here to learn, not to get laid."

Kieran Sloroimh of the Tribe of Louth.
I smiled - well, one friend in the making!
"Officially, to learn. Unofficially, too.", I said and sighed, "And even more unofficially... my family is a branch of a landowning Clan, the Sloroimh-Family. My Dad wants to make sure, that his sons and his daughter get a solid education for when the land goes over to us, so that we know, what we can do with it... add in, that this whole landowning business is nothing for me and you have a Selkie at such a school."
I let a beat pass.

Charlotte's eyes lit up at those words. "Niiiice. I did a semester there once with a friend. Good place. Would live there. And same, I guess. Just get through it and done with, aye?"

Just gotta roll with it. He thinks that this place will help me manage his hedge fund thing. I doubt it, but we'll see."

I smiled at Charlie at the praise of my homeland.

The young Vanaian entered the common area of the school. He was wearing a navy blazer, a crisp white shirt and a stripped rep tie. His tobacco brown desert boots contrasted with his white linen pants. He played with a large golden watch. All these western clothes were new to him, and he wasn't exactly comfortable in them, but he was assured that they would help him to fit in.

Patti Hun Su, looked around nervously, be fore strolling over to the other students, whom he greeted. "Hello! I am Su Bey. What is your name?" Just like his tutor had taught him. His accent was heavy and he spoke slowly.

The new kid seemed friendly, but his accent was thick (and the watch a bit too large for his wrist, but I guess, we were of that age).
I tried to reply in clear and slow Standard English - emphasis on tried, though.
"Hey, there, laddo. I'm Celina, pleasure to meet you.", I said, just as...

Nura, Muhammad, Bashar and Hussaina arrived in Dar al-Badw. While they weren’t as opposed to the school as some of their soon to be classmates, this certainly wasn’t their idea of a fun vacation. Bashir mumbled in Hausa the whole way there while Muhammad sent forth a series of both British and Pakistani obscenities. Nura had her AirPods in listening to music while Hussaina was on her phone listening to an Islamic lecture being broadcast live from Tehran. Every so often, she turned around and shushed her two male cousins as to better hear the preacher as he urged following the examples of Muhammad (S), Āli, and Husayn.

Their transport stopped in front of the school, and the four exited and waved goodbye to their guard and driver, Prem. Then, they looked at their new school. Like Dar al-Badw, it was so foreign yet so familiar to them. They entered their building and looked to see where their classes would be.
“Hurry up and find where our names are!” Nura urged impatiently, as Muhammad scanned for the last names “Khan”, “Sadiq” and “Jamshid”.
“I can’t find them,” he said finally.
“Ba ka iya gaane?” Bashar asked in Hausa. Are you blind? “Mine is right there, near the top. Yours is near the middle.”
Hussaina then located where it stated their classes were. “Here. Tarikh,” she said, in her Iranian accent.
The others needed no translation: the word for “history” was pretty much the same in all their languages. They made their way through the hallways, hoping they hadn’t wasted too much time.

Patti Hun Su was puzzled by the informal greeting and the word laddo. He assumed it must be sone honorific, but was already prepared to forgive Celina any lack of respect. Any way with the bell ringing and classes starting, he didn't have time to think it over. Not familiar with the concept of a bell, his reaction was delayed. Not knowing where to go, he followed the others into their history class.

Charlie did, in fact, have history, and flopped down into a seat beside Celina. A laptop came out, followed by a juicebox and a few small cakes in packets. She then fired up a text editor, before waiting and opening a packet of cake, wolfing it down, and then pulling out the straw of the juicebox and punctering it, before taking a sip.
She glanced over at Cell, and caught her attention. "Oi, Cel, 'ave a nosh." she said, before offering her a packet.

"Ah, a flying boat!" Alcott's eyes lit up. "Yeah, those are real cool. Was it a turboprop or a jet?"
Before he could continue, the bell rang, and Alcott suddenly realized he wasn't exactly sure where to go.

"Ey, Kieran- where should we go?" he asked.

Celina Scian of the Tribe of Fermanagh.
Laddo, as a form of Laddie, was not meant as an insult.
That being said, he followed me and Charlie to the classroom, where Charlie and I found each other close to each other. Just as I had pulled out my own notebook and writing utensils, I became aware of Charlie holding out some sort of packaged small cake.
"Oi, Cel, 'ave a nosh.", she offered it to me.
"Oh, thanks.", I said and took one, opening the package. "Come break, I have something for you to try!"

Kieran Sloroimh of the Tribe of Louth.
"History.", I replied to Alcott, "I guess, we are in the same class... and if not, we will be told soon enough." I shrugged and got into motion, my new friend (hopefully) on my tail. "Turbofan, so jet engine. Three-spool high bypass turbofan engine with FADEC and a few other neat things."

Charlie

The Bayerlander nodded as she dug in to her breakfast. "Thanks. Fish and chips tastes good but it gets old real fast."

The muffled sound of eating, followed by the slurp of a juicebox being emptied, rang through the empty classroom, as Charlie finished the last of her breakfast and waited, now noticably more awake.
Cel would find a small custard pastry within the package. Probably too sweet to be a healthy breakfast, but food was food.

Alcott
"Damn!" Alcott's eyes lit up as he followed. "That's really cool. Genuinely. I envy you."

As soon as they arrived in the classroom, Alcott took a seat, with an empty one to his right, obviously intending for Kieran to sit next to him.
An ex-monarchy that, after its "liberation", has fractured into numerous states, all at each others throat.

The students walked towards where they believed the history class to be. Nura dropped her half eaten spring roll on the ground. Cursing, she turned to pick it up when she noticed Patti Hun Su. Her eyes immediately lit up as she believed she had found one of her kinsman. Her cousins confusedly attempted to quiet her as she rapid fired questions in Urdu regarding Su Bey’s nationality and faith.

The history lesson began, the subject was the Great Arab Revolt, “Who can name three reasons for the Great Arab Revolt?” the teacher, a Lebanese woman in a hijab, asked the class.

Breaking away from the rest of her family while they tried to restrain Nura, Hussaina entered the History classroom. Hearing the teacher’s question, she rose her hand and answered, “The Great Arab Revolt occurred because the Arabs feared a Zionist takeover of our beloved Palestine, the British promised the Arabs their own United country, and the Ottomans were failing to meet the needs of the people of the Levant and the Hejaz.”

It was indeed sweet and it had custard, but it filled the stomach - that was good, the pastry itself tasted alright. Charlie's rather loud way of eating did not bother me in the slightest.
Then the teacher in some sort of costume made...

...but I had a question of my own.
I raised my hand and, without being asked to speak, I replied: "Excuse me, Miss, but as you might be able to notice, the majority of us are not from this country, so you might want to start with telling us, what this Great Revolt was and, more importantly, why we should give a damn."
Leaning back, I brought my pen to paper and looked at the woman expectantly, challenging, as if to say Well, teacher?.
Also, she hadn't introduced herself.

Kieran Sloroimh of the Tribe of Louth.
A few minutes before that, I had grinned at Alcott's reply - truth being told, my Uncle had only taken me into the cockpit with the strict promise to not touch anything that blinked.
Or anthing else.
I took my seat next to him and waited for the lesson's content which seemed to be about some revolt or the other... and I had tuned out.

Lady Honorine Aveline

Honorine had entered the school with a pleasant smile on her face. Sure, she was sent in here largely due to the ways she could be unpleasant, but that was by no means obvious when one looked at the girl. The 15 going on 16 year old, some what pale skinned, turquoise eyed dark redhaired girl in a basic school uniform with high socks, skirt, shirt and tie (though she did wear rather tough looking military boots) stood at a tall 1.75 meters, while having a frame that while still developing was clearly befitting of what would expect from a grappling kickboxer, but one that well avoided looking boyish.

She didn't immediately begin interacting with her fellow students while she waited, prefering casual observation instead, though she kept a pleasant look about her, she wasn't trying to be intimidating, not at the moment at least. Happily, the first class she'd have would be history, a favoured subject of hers, though she was curious to as to how this school would even teach history given the nation's less-than-progressive instincts.

The first two responses, however, set off Honorine, ford different reasons. If this was a story of things to come, things were probably likely to get dirty for for her.

"Hey, girl who's name I don't know, I'm Honorine, by the way, we're in a history class in an Arab country, if for know other reason than getting a feel for how this school see's the world so that you know how to get good marks, you want to give a damn about the Arab Revolt and what they think about. Or, you could have just not come here, thinking that might have been preferable."

Honorine began, her arms folded and eyes closed in a smug expression, at the end she opened an eye to see how the first girl who spoke would react.

"Anyway, as with more or less all colonial revolts, the Great Arab revolt was caused by key members of the local, upper class feeling as though their colonial masters were a greater cost to their power over everyone else than a benefit, so they wanted to throw them off. As usual, any identity and religion based claims were largely propaganda covers to rile up poor folk."
