The Story: Every year, at least since 1905 and the victory over Orussia in the Fusōnese-Orussian War by the Battle of Tsushima, the Imperial Fusō Navy has kept the commemorative events of the great battle that brought the Empire its victory sombre and somewhat low-key, with the notable exception of the 100th one in 2005. 2021 is of no exception, with the only ships docked in Yokosuka prearranged guests of the Naval Ministry. There was however, one change from the ordinary.
Usually this event took place under the aegis of the Sasebo Naval District on the far-western end of the country, the base where Admiral Tōgo's and the Combined Fleet's departed some one-hundred years ago towards Tsushima. 2021 however sees the event moving from Sasebo to Yokosuka, mostly to get away from the uncontrolled spread of COVID19 in the People's Republic of China to the west. Also, as an experiment, the hosts of this year's events went to the Yokosuka Girl's Maritime Academy Senior High School, one of those schools that were technically belonged to the navy but had substantial independence in its day to day affairs.
Located on the northeastern end of Tomaricho, north of the main naval base in the city, Yokosuka Girl's Maritime Academy was originally an affiliate of the Imperial Fusō Naval Academy, specialising in training Witches during the days of the Second Neuroi War. After the end of the war the establishment broadened its activities a bit and now provides the general standardised curriculum as well as training young cadets for the Etajima Academy. Its building's, built post-war were near-copies of the Etajima Academy's, only smaller in scale. It is now here where the 116th commemoration festival of the Battle of Tsushima and the Day of the Imperial Fusō Navy will take place.
