There were seven of them. They were like all the other tourists. They didn’t wear ski masks over their heads. All the while they had conducted themselves in a calm, collected manner. And if it weren’t for the guns that were now being pointed at them, the other passengers wouldn’t have suspected anything about them.

“Shut up! I said keep your heads down!” their leader, a silver-haired man, barked, brandishing his weapon. Across the aisles he watched as they bowed and crouched, keeping their heads in their hands or putting them against the seats in front of them. “Don’t do anything stupid,” he continued in a suddenly low voice, “and you all will live.”

Behind him a phone rang. The man turned, preparing to point at what he assumed to be a threat, until he saw that it was one of his henchmen. “Sir,” the younger man said, holding up the phone, “it’s the Imperial Palace.”

“Finally,” the leader said, evidently exasperated as he walked over and wrested the phone away. His voice grew louder and rougher. “Who am I talking to?”

“I am the Lord President of the Privy Council,” said the voice from the other side. “I-“

“Ah, the great Duke of Baghdad, the old geezer,” the leader replied mockingly. “Look, we’re tired of flying around and around the Persian Gulf. If our demands are not fulfilled, we will take one passenger every fifteen minutes-“ At this point screams were heard across the plane, which clearly did not please the leader. “Quiet! I didn’t tell you to speak!”

“And you will live to regret your decision,” he barked at the phone before ending the call. His eyes scanned the scenery, fear and terror pervasive.

He stared at the phone for a few more long seconds, growling at himself, fingers running up and down the screen, as if trying to call back again. Then he fell silent and stood still. His eyes were fixed on the phone. A notification had just come. “Oh, the WorldVision jury results are out. Well I guess it won’t hurt me to check on this for a while.”
