Good to be out and about again, cheap drinks are good sometimes. Also noticed my girlfriend is practically pinballing around the place. So I know she is excited about something but isn’t telling me anything so I assume it will be a surprise of sorts.

Quoniam melius est nos mori in bello, quam videre mala gentis nostrae, et sanctorum.
- 1 Mc 3:59, Vulgate

It is better for us to die in battle than to witness the evils befalling our nation and our sanctuary.
- Same verse, NABRE

Today, on April 9th, Naval Station Bacolod commemorates the sacrifices of Visayan servicemembers who offered life and limb alike to serve in the Armed Forces.
The Day of Valor is one of several holidays common to the successor states of the Philippine Islands. Originally a memorial day dedicated to the Fall of Bataan in 1942, in the Confederation it has taken a significance analogous to the Memorial Days observed in other nations; on this day we honor the veterans of the Philippine Civil War, of which the War for Visayan Independence was one of two fronts, all across the Confederation. These men and women who fought, bled, and died for an independent Confederation deserve the honor that is due to them. Peace to the Fallen, Strength to the Wounded.

V: May the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.
R: Amen.

In the Ordinary Form, the Gospel reading for tomorrow, Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion, is Lk 22:14-23:56, which depicts The Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke. In the Extraordinary Form, the Gospel reading is Mt 26:36-27:66.

The reason the Sunday before Easter is called "Palm Sunday" is because palm branches were scattered in front of Christ as He made His way into Jerusalem; one may use either Lk 19:28-40 (Mt 21:1-9 in the Extraordinary Form) as the Gospel passage recited during the procession with palms--a procession that will be done away with tomorrow in light of measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19 as mentioned during my last post. Other branches are used in places that do not support the growth of palms, but the symbolism remains nonetheless.

Do not be men and women of sadness: a Christian can never be sad! Never give way to discouragement! Ours is not a joy born of having many possessions, but from having encountered a Person: Jesus, in our midst; it is born from knowing that with him we are never alone, even at difficult moments, even when our life’s journey comes up against problems and obstacles that seem insurmountable, and there are so many of them! And in this moment the enemy, the devil, comes, often disguised as an angel, and slyly speaks his word to us. Do not listen to him! Let us follow Jesus! We accompany, we follow Jesus, but above all we know that he accompanies us and carries us on his shoulders. This is our joy, this is the hope that we must bring to this world. Please do not let yourselves be robbed of hope! Do not let hope be stolen! The hope that Jesus gives us.

As we approach the Paschal Triduum, let us take to heart the lesson behind the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ: despite our own sinfulness, God still loves us, going so far as to send His Son into the World to offer Himself for the salvation of all of humanity.

The Chrism Mass this Thursday will be held at 8 in the morning here at the Cathedral. In addition, all churches under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese will observe a uniform schedule of Mass. The Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper will be held at 5 in the afternoon; the Good Friday liturgy will be held at 3 in the afternoon; and the Easter Vigil Mass will be held at 8 in the evening for the Ordinary Form and 12 midnight for the Extraordinary Form. All these will be livestreamed on the official WhoTube Channel of the Archdiocese of Tagbilaran; the livestreams will be in five languages, each language being streamed from a particular parish:

  • Visayan - St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, Tagbilaran, BH
  • Spanish - St. Augustine Parish, Panglao, BH
  • English - Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of the Assumption, Dauis, BH
  • Mandarin - St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish, Tagbilaran, BH

Rev. Fr. Isidro Satou III, CSsR Cebu City, DH

What does it mean: "He loved them to the end"? It means: until that fulfilment which was to take place the following day, on Good Friday. On that day, God was to reveal how much he loved the world, and how, in that love, he had come to the extreme limit of giving, to the point, that is of "giving his only Son" (John 3:16). On that day, Christ showed that "greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). The love of the Father was revealed in the giving of the Son. In the giving through death.
Holy Thursday, the day of the Last Supper, is in some sense the prologue of this giving, and the last preparation for it. And, in some sense, what was accomplished on that day goes beyond such a giving. It was just on Holy Thursday, during the Last Supper, that the meaning of: "He loved to the end", was revealed.
Rightly, in fact, we believe that loving to the end means until death, until the last breath. The last Supper teaches us, however, that, for Jesus, "to the end" means beyond the last breath. Beyond death.

- Excerpt from the homily of St. John Paul II for The Mass of The Lord's Supper, April 12th, 1979

The Gospel reading for today, Maundy Thrusday, is Jn 13:1-15, part of The Washing of the Disciples' Feet; the entire episode ends at verse 20. In the preconciliar form of the Mass, today is a Class I feast day; the Gospel Reading is the same for both forms.

The Evening Mass of The Lord's Supper commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, where bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ through what is called transubstantiation, a term understood in Eastern Christendom as metousiosis, a change of essence.

Still more suffering. It looms in countries where our brothers of faith cannot indulge in shows like the one we are attending this evening. There faith is threatened; it is mocked, it is oppressed; there is no freedom of expression, of association; the conscience is intimidated by constant threats and dangers. We would like these beloved faithful - if Our voice ever reaches them - to know that we pray for them; we share and know their pangs, and we would like to instill, precisely for the honor of the nations to which they belong, a hope of better days.
- Excerpt from the homily of St. Paul VI for the Via Crucis on Good Friday, April 16th, 1965

The Gospel reading for today, Good Friday, is Jn 18:1-19:42, the narration of The Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. In the preconciliar form of the Roman Rite, today is a Class I feast day; the Gospel Reading is the same for both forms.

Good Friday is the only day that the Church does not, strictly speaking, celebrate Mass; instead, we celebrate the Service of the Passion of the Lord on this day, a day in which we commemorate the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Fr. (CDR) Tecumseh C. Piañar Bacolod, NG

Christus resurrexit sicut dixit, Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Gospel reading for today, Easter Sunday, is Jn 20:1-9, where Mary Magdalene informs Simon Peter and the "other disciple whom Jesus loved" (traditionally identified as St. John the Apostle) of the absence of Jesus' Corpse in His Tomb. In the Extraordinary Form, the reading is Mk 6:1-7.

Easter is a time where we commemorate the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who by willingly accepting His Passion and Death made open the way of Salvation to all of humanity. Indeed, He is the Resurrection and the Life.

Bp. Vicente N. Ibarazaki II Lapu-Lapu, DH

We must have communion with the Lord: we must love him, we must be happy to be Christians; we have so many needs, so many pains, so many sins; we so much need the Lord to assist us. And here, next to the parish one, family prayer. And yet another prayer: the one that is not expressed, but is lived with conscience, that is, the religious sense of life. Too often today the profane meaning of life prevails, and we no longer want to hear the notion of the sacred. But if we are Christians we must be convinced that our whole life is pervaded by this atmosphere. God's presence is everywhere; our duty to be good always follows us.
- Excerpt from the Easter homily of St. Paul VI, April 11th, 1971

Christ has risen as He said, Alleluia, Alleluia!

We commemorate the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Just as Our Lord Jesus Christ died and rose again, so should we die to our old selves and rise to a new life with Him.

@Milan Hjardavic I am not opposed to chocolate or any other treat, when consumed sparingly and in moderation. What I am opposed to, and the Church too, is the desecration and commercialization of Christian holy days, such as Easter and Christmas. @Rover: The High Noon Run is an annual event held in the Province of Mindoro. The Run itself starts at 12 noon on April 20th and the events surrounding it last for one week. Historically, the High Noon Run was instituted as part of an advocacy for marijuana decriminalization; with the province of Mindoro legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in 2002, it became tradition for entrants to start the Run high on cannabis. When the Run or parts thereof coincide with days holy to religious groups--as I understand, the 20th this years falls within both the Octave of Easter and Passover--OLMAV puts more emphasis on the use of entheogens. I myself participated in the High Noon Run once, back in 2013; I was among the first 50 to complete, out of over 1600. Long story short, I lost a bet.
