Rev. Fr. Isidro Satou III, CSsR Cebu City, DH

Your Parish is celebrating today the feast of its Patron Saint: St Francis Xavier, the apostle of the Far East, missionary and patron saint of the missions. How greatly he merited for this reason alone: to bring the coming of Christ to the hearts of those who did not know him, those whom his Gospel had not yet reached! Your parish intends to follow its Patron Saint, and today celebrates its mission day.
May the word of God be able to reach the utmost limits of the earth! May it be able to find its way to every human heart!
This is the prayer I raise, together with you, through the intercession of St Francis Xavier, I, your Bishop: Come, Lord Jesus, Maranatha! Amen

- Excerpt from St. John Paul II's Homily during the pastoral visit to the Roman Parish of St. Francis Xavier, December 3rd, 1978

The Gospel reading for today, the Memorial of St. Francis Xavier, is Mk 15:15-20, which covers almost the entirety of St. Mark's account of The Great Commission, known here as The Commissioning of the Eleven (the complete account starting with verse 14), and The Ascension of Jesus. In the preconcilar form of the Mass, this is a class III feast day; the Gospel reading only covers those parts of St. Mark's account of The Great Commission, which ends at verse 18.
St. Francis Xavier was a Jesuit who spread the Word of the Lord to the Far East. His efforts in evangelizing Japan bore much fruit during the Sengoku Jidai, sowing the seeds of Christendom in a land that would eventually water those same seeds with the blood of martyrs such as the Nihon Nijūroku Seijin (Ss. Pedro Bautista, Paul Miki, and Companions; feast day: February 6th) and the Nihon no junkyōsha (San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila and companions; feast day: September 28th).

We are currently at 69.8 million vaccinated under the National Vaccination Drive Against COVID-19. At the rate of vaccination, we can expect to reach 70 million before the week ends.

Booster shots are available for people who have been fully vaccinated. The Directorate for Disease Control recommends that boosters be administered six months after the second dose of a two-shot vaccine and three months after a single-shot vaccine.

In the Ordinary Form, the Gospel reading for tomorrow, the Second Sunday of Advent, is Lk 3:1-6, which opens The Preaching of John the Baptist. In the Extraordinary Form, the Gospel reading is Mt 11:2-10.

...as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"
-- Lk 3:4-6, NABRE

The theme for the Second Sunday of Advent is the preaching of St. John the Baptist, who came to "prepare the way of the Lord." His call of repentance is fitting, as we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Our Lord.

The Military Archdiocese has announced that all parishes under its jurisdiction shall comply with reduced size for the traditional procession in celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception per Department of Defense guidelines for minimizing the spread of COVID-19. The Solemnity itself falls on Wednesday, December 8th, coinciding with the 34th Anniversary of Visayan Independence.

  • Visayan - 5:30 AM, 3:00 PM
  • Spanish - 7:00 AM, 4:30 PM
  • English - 8:30 AM, 6:00 PM
  • Mandarin - 12:00 NN
  • Traditional Latin - 10:00 AM (Solemn Pontifical Mass presided by me)

All livestreams will be broadcast from the Cathedral of the Christ Child.

As we approach the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we must keep in mind the saying Ad Iesum per Mariam; the Immaculate Conception can be seen as laying the foundation for the Nativity of Our Lord, thus the hyperdulia (special degree of veneration) due to the the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The following schedule for the Cathedral this Wednesday is as follows:

  • Visayan - 6:00 AM, 3:00 PM
  • Spanish - 7:30 AM, 4:30 PM
  • English - 9:00 AM, 6:00 PM
  • Mandarin - 10:30 AM
  • Traditional Latin - 12:00 NN (Solemn Pontifical Mass presided by me)

All Masses will be livestreamed on the official WhoTube Channel of the Archdiocese of Tagbilaran for those who cannot attend; as always, the Cathedral is limited to 50% of full capacity in accordance with measures to keep COVID-19 out of the Confederation.

¡Viva la Independencia Bisaya, y viva la Inmaculada Concepción!

The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic His giving, by grace, through faith, and this is not of ourselves.
- St. Nicholas of Myra

The Gospel reading for today, the Optional Memorial of St. Nicholas of Myra, is Lk 10:1-9, which covers almost the entirety of The Mission of the Seventy-two (the complete account ending at verse 12). In the preconcilar form of the Mass, this is a class III feast day; the Gospel reading is Mt 25:14-23.
St. Nicholas of Myra is the bishop most popularly known in the modern world as the origin of Santa Claus, owing to the legends surrounding him. Jolly Old St. Nicholas...was also not above decking heretics if the legends surrounding how he took exception to Arius' heresies in the Council of Nicaea are any indication.

This Wednesday is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception; Mass schedules are as Sunday's. As December 8th is also Independence Day: ¡viva la Independencia Bisaya, y viva la Inmaculada Concepción!

Rev. Fr. Isidro Satou III, CSsR Cebu City, DH

Let Father and Son, therefore, be associated in worship, even as They are associated in Godhead; let not blasphemy put asunder those whom the close bond of generation hath joined together. Let us honour the Son, that we may honour the Father also, as it is written in the Gospel. The Son's eternity is the adornment of the Father's majesty. If the Son hath not been from everlasting, then the Father hath suffered change; but the Son is from all eternity, therefore hath the Father never changed, for He is always unchangeable. And thus we see that they who would deny the Son's eternity would teach that the Father is mutable.
- St. Ambrose examining an Arian

The Gospel reading for today, the Memorial of St. Ambrose, is Jn 10:11-16, part of the episode on The Good Shepherd (the complete account spanning verses 1 to 21). In the preconcilar form of the Mass, this is a class III feast day; the Gospel reading is Mt 5:13-19.
St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church, started out as a public servant in the Western Roman Empire before being acclaimed Bishop of Milan. He was a significant influence on St. Augustine (feast day: August 28th), eventually baptizing him and his son Adeodatus in AD 387.

Mysterii Paschalis, the 1969 motu proprio issued by St. Paul VI (feast day: May 29th), defines the liturgical day as running from midnight to midnight, with the exception of Sundays and Solemnities, which are celebrated beginning on the night before. I will be officiating tonight's Vigil Mass for the Immaculate Conception.

Wherefore, in humility and fasting, we unceasingly offered our private prayers as well as the public prayers of the Church to God the Father through his Son, that he would deign to direct and strengthen our mind by the power of the Holy Spirit. In like manner did we implore the help of the entire heavenly host as we ardently invoked the Paraclete. Accordingly, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, for the honor of the Holy and undivided Trinity, for the glory and adornment of the Virgin Mother of God, for the exaltation of the Catholic Faith, and for the furtherance of the Catholic religion, by the authority of Jesus Christ our Lord, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own: "We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful."
- Excerpt from Ineffabilis Deus (Bl. Pius IX, 1854)

The Gospel reading for today, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, is Lk 1:26-38, the episode focusing on the Annunciation. In the preconcilar form of the Mass, this is a class I feast day; the Gospel reading ends at verse 28.
The veneration of La Inmaculada dates back to the 7th century AD. The feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary--where the grace of God Almighty had kept her from the taint of original sin that dooms all of humanity in preparation for the birth of His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ--spread from the East, before being extended to European Christendom in 1477 and all of Catholic Christendom in 1693; the dogma itself, however, would not be formally defined until 1854, with the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus, promulgated by Bl. Pius IX on December 8th of that year.

As mentioned in the previous posts, today is also the 34th Anniversary of Visayan Independence. It was on this day that the Founding Fathers and Mothers of what was then known as the Free Visayan Republic declared independence from the authoritarian rule of Manila. Because of this, it is extremely common for Visayan Catholics to greet one another using formulae that refer to both Independence Day and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception; the Spanish greeting is a particularly popular one: ¡Viva la Independencia Bisaya, y viva la Inmaculada Concepción!

@Anastasija Kladnov: Well, if you don't mind the tight window, I don't really see why not. If you're fully vaccinated, all you need is to present proof of the same and you need not worry too much about quarantines. Holiday hours will apply from the 24th to the 26th as well, so don't be afraid to be early.

Mabuhay ang Kalayaan! Mabuhay ang Bagong Kabisayaan!
