Well, let's see:

It actually shipped with a cleaning kit, unlike the M16.
It uses a much more reliable short-stroke gas pistol assembly, as opposed to, again, the much less reliable direct-impingement system of the M16.
The IRA used it, or at least the AR-180, the civilian form.
It influenced rifles such as the SA-80 and the more well known G36.
