Notes: The VOA was formed in 1920 by the merger of the Communist Party of Oswesch (KPO) with the left wing of the Social Democratic Party of Oswesch (SPO), which was undergoing a split following a collapse in its leadership. It steadily gained in popularity, governing in coalition with the Liberal Democrats from 1936 to 1939 and from 1948 to 1955, until it managed to gain a majority in the Bundestag in 1956 following a major recession in the Osweschian economy. While the VOA managed to offset the effects of the recession by nationalizing major industries and supporting trade unions, these actions proved unpopular with the international corporations which still did business in Oswesch, which promoted anti-government propaganda in an attempt to sabotage the VOA in the upcoming elections of 1960. When these efforts failed and the VOA retained a comfortable majority, conservative elements of the military staged a coup for the stated purpose of "protecting the Fatherland from foreign subversion." Many VOA politicians were harassed with trumped-up criminal charges, and after a terrorist attack in 1962, the party was banned altogether. Although the junta was overthrown in the "Silent Revolution" of 1985 and the VOA was unbanned, its influence had significantly atrophied and thus has remained a relatively minor party up until the 2010s. Whether the VOA will manage to gain power once again remains to be seen.
