Last edition of Worldvision marked another Top-10 finish for Polkopia and the PNB opted to continue the tradition of using a National Final in order to determine Polkopia's entrant for the next edition of the contest. It should come as a surprise to no one that this National Final will once again take place in the form of the Landa vy Polkopiya, which has served as the National Final for Polkopia for decades and is one of Polkopia's longest-running TV shows. The contest dates back to 1972, where the winner of the competition received a cash price and was flown to Peeto in order to record more tracks with an established Polkopian record label. Of course, times in Polkopia are much different now, and apart from exposure on several media platforms, the winner of the Landa vy Polkopiya typically has the opportunity to represent Polkopia in the Worldvision Song Contest.

The lineup for this edition of the Landa vy Polkopiya has been revealed! As always, the PNB is calling on international juries to submit their votes before the conclusion of the semi-finals, and this result will be mixed with a televote in a 50/50 format in order to calculate the overall winner of the competition. Thoughts and Reflections - WorldVision 82 Televote

Hello everyone, thank you all for coming to Tiferet for the 82nd edition of the WorldVision Song Contest! It was a pleasure to host everyone and to give the televote a try as a new system in WorldVision. The committee has suggested that there could be a public discussion regarding the permanent implementation of the televote as part of the permanent WorldVision voting process, and so preempting that, I have decided to release some thoughts about the televote so that if we do vote, we can all be informed as to how it did work, and how it could work in the future. Apart from that, I will likely stay out of any further discussion of the televote after this post (bar clarification of anything that I post here). With that, I am going to delve into explaining my thoughts and experiences in conducting the televote!

Televote Methodology

Some were confused by how exactly the televote system is calculated, so here I aim to make it more simple. In our last edition, each country gave each other a ranking out of 10 for their entry. We previously decided that the numbers from 6-10 would yield a positive value, 0-4 a negative one, and 5 to be a neutral value. Then, the total value would be multiplied by a specific multiplier, which would turn the raw positive/negative values into points equivalent to that done for the jury system. Here below I will use an example:

Here we have how Izmedu (2nd place in the televote) was ranked. As we can see, 8 countries gave Izmedu an 10/10, 1 a 9/10 and so on. Now, the values decided by myself and with the support of the committee had a positive bias, that being that the positive weightings were slightly larger than the equivalent negative weightings - this had the effect of bringing up some nations that were on the edge of receiving points in the televote. In our case, each positive score had a 1.2 weighting, and each negative score had a -0.8 rating.

As we can see above, the /10 ratings given to Izmedu yielded a raw score of 80.8 - for example, we multiply the 8 10/10 ratings by 6 (the multiplier) to get to 48 raw points, and so on and so forth, including the negative ratings which reduced the score. However there is still another unexplained step, how do we get 131 points from this value of 80.8?

Each nation in WorldVision gives out a total of 58 points per vote, split from 12, 10 8-1. We take this 58 and multiply it by the total number of nations voting. In the previous edition, this was 31 nations. So 58x32 = 1798 points to divide between the competition. We also add the total sum of all the nations raw points ie. Izmedu's 80.8, according to weightings etc. In this edition, the total was 1109.6. We then divide the total points number (1798) by the total raw points number (1109.6) to give us the multiplier. So:

1798/1109.6 = 1.62040375 = multiplier

We then take Izmedu's 80.8 value and multiply it by the multiplier:

80.8 x 1.62040375 = 130.928623 (131 points)

While it seems complicated, once the formula has been created in excel, it is actually very easy to reproduce, simply editing the desired weightings values, number of participants etc.

Coming Together

Something very compelling about the way the World Hit Festival is run, is the live reveals which bring people together. I think that's important for our community! As we can see from above, we had a lot of excitement and enthusiasm with the televote. Having everyone together, anticipating the results and getting excited to see where they end up is, I believe, super important. It's important not only for making the contest more exciting (which, it isn't given that the typical point reveals are so low), but also for expanding the contest and making a welcoming and positive community for everyone to be a part of. It is important for the longevity of the contest that we innovate, and bringing people together, creating important bonds between us is how we keep our fabulous contest thriving!

Jury/Televote Differences

I have seen a few comments regarding "the point" of the televote, that it is bulking the contest for bulk's sake. From the above graphic we can see that this is of course not the case, and we had a lot of difference in televote and jury ranks. In fact, if we remove those nations that received 0 points from the televote (which will be addressed in a little bit), only 5 nations (Llalta, Tobu, Ele, Malta & Waisnor) finished in the same jury and televoting positions. As highlighted by some people, it is an excellent way for rewarding nations who perhaps would not be able to break into people's top 10, but still give them points they deserve. Equally, this will increase the quality of the contest, as every nation will receive a numerical critique on their entry, so that low-effort entries, which many of us have complained about in the past, will be "punished" by receiving a lower televote total.

Reccomendations for the Future?

* One noticeable issue was the number of 0's handed out during the televote. This, I agree with. It is a mistake to have scores that can give equally positive and negative points, rather we should endeavour to provide incentives to do well, and thus point rewards. I would propose instead a 1-10 point system, with 1-3 having a negative value, 4 having a neutral value and 5-10 having a positive value, with higher values having increasing points returns. If we for example used last editions results on the following model, we would have points as so (assuming all 0's are counted as 1's):

This system would thus lift Zeganas and Bayilan into the points, while (rightly) penalising low effort, zero RP entries, and still maintaining a large amount of points for a final reveal in the case of Llalta.

* People who would rather separate the jury and televote between two different categories should be able to do so, if they inform the committee beforehand. This would add a degree of unpredictability to the televote which would greatly improve the diversity of the results, but it would also not be compulsory, so that would allow nations who simply wanted to rate entries high that could not get points in the usual way.

* Some people have expressed confusion of how the televote is calculated. I hope I have cleared these things up, but even better would be to, in future, give the responsibility of the televote to the committee to ensure the fairness of the voting, and then send the converted results to the then host, to reveal. This would take the pressure off of the host, and ensure that the televote is in the hands of those who understand how it works. Furthermore, the committee could then set weightings, ensure fair voting, and enforce rules upon the televote.

Anyway, this was just a mini essay about the televote and its future. I hope you enjoyed last edition, and we are looking forward to the upcoming 83rd edition of the contest!

The concept of a televote is completely fubared, and really should be scrapped.

I personally didn't find it that exciting since I knew from the start it wasn't going to throw the results upside down: it is virtually impossible to have the wide divergences between jury and televote seen in ESC on account of the fact that, unlike, in ESC, it's the same person doing both jury and televote. The correlation between the jury and televote in WV82 was 0.95 according to Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient (a formula for measuring correlations). In ESC, since the mixed system was introduced in 2009, the correlation in the final has never been more than 0.55 (2010) (there may be a higher semi final, but I've never calculated those). Because of this inherent flaw in not being allowed to have anything approaching divergence (quite rightly given we're the same people, as I said). Even if you discount the nul-points of the televote (arguably inflating that 0.95 value), the correlation between the jury and televote was 0.84, still far, far higher than the 2010 ESC value. So what is this if not a big confirmation bias of the jury vote?

This is not even addressing the other issues around the way the televote was calculated (which was done arbitrarily at the end when it should really be done at the start), the bias in the system towards those who handed out more positive points than negative, the overinflated figures that those not receiving 0 received compared to a "normal" jury vote (with it therefore being very possible that the televote winner could have beaten the theoretical maximum score for the jury vote as per Melodifestivalen), the way this unfairly punishes joke puppets (or any Marmite entries), or the potential for rating everything 4 or below and thus effectively voting for yourself - which, in an edition where I only ranked 7 entries 5 or above, might have been very tempting for someone less integral than me to do.

I'm writing this in a hurry, so this is not even a comprehensive list of the issues I found with it. Please, please, please, don't bring it back.

I posited this in the chat yesterday, and the more I think about it, the more I'm gelling to the idea. Whilst the televote had that wonderful moment of tension, the thing that stuck in my craw a lot was what the "televotes" actually stood for. The contest we're attempting to emulate has a distinct difference between the two voting systems. One is based on the opinions of a set of music professionals, ones who would be more appreciative of nuanced songwriting, and the other are of the voting public, that lean towards what sounds good, and what looks good. Whilst both of these are subjective opinions of what makes an entry great, the point is that they're quite often two very different points of view. With the current system, you don't get that.

Take a look at the four entries that varied greatly between the televote and the jury vote last contest. Why exactly are they different? You can argue that because there's shock changes like this it adds 'unpredictability', but without an explicit reason why these changes have happened, and especially when the two sets of votes are judged on exactly the same criteria, it seems that the televote has no real purpose. Additionally, if you want to argue that the televotes having specific rankings to allow more than ten entries to receive points makes voting more open, then I'd argue why would we still be using the original 1-12 jury system?

As I said on the chat, if the critera of what we're actually voting for in the televote is the same as the jury one, then all we're really doing is adding bulk for the sake of bulk. I love the idea of having a big get-together on D-Day to see the results come in, don't get me wrong, but there's a way to do it without muddying the water.

The primary feature of the televote system as executed last edition is the placing of entries that would normally all be just given a flat zero and equated with one another under a 1-12 points system. Therefore an entry that just misses out on the top 10s of many people would get a much higher televote score than jury, while one that is far from most peoples' top 10 would get nothing or nearly nothing. This system is great for dealing with the low-effort issue that has been discussed over the past few editions, as low-effort entries are hit hard here, but I do agree that there is certainly room for improvement and potentially a new, different approach to the televote concept.

INTRODUCTION: Seeing as how Caryton closely tied with its competitors in its last host bid, the delegation has attempted to try again for WV83, playing an angle of the ultimate simplicity. There will be no quarantine or social distancing, because under the tight management of the Gospel Church of Caryton, closed borders, and an effective universal health system, there are no cases of COVID-19. Spectators will be free to move about as they like, provided they pass a health exam provided free of charge by local doctors. As a testament to the world that Caryton is the place to be, they wish to make this bid as unique as possible. Ol' fashioned hymns will be sung by the spectators in intervals, and a family-friendly atmosphere will be bestowed to the world. Prominent Carytonic clergy, Cary, and musicians will be spectating with a very special host.

THE CITY:

Bridgeson, Spiritual Republic of Caryton. Population 908. A remarkable town often times not heard of by even the most avid tourists. Nestled in the mountainous northern regions, the tiny town has a beautiful view of the grassy valleys below them. Wreathed lampposts, family cafes and bakeries, treelined streets, and some of the provinces' best ski resorts and hiking trails. Famous for its remarkably high amount of rainfall-- 122 days a year-- cozy up to the fire and get to know Bridgeson. The populace are entirely comprised of goodly and pious members of the Gospel Church of Caryton. Before the event begins, feel free to attend worship service! Bridgeson was formed earlier in mid-2019 to repopulate the countryside after the old regime fell to the Spiritual Republic. Everything in this town is still new and still fun! Bridgeson residents have so graciously agreed to join hand in hand with hotels and take in spectators. Homecooked meals and Carytonic hospitality will be yours to enjoy until the time of the performance.

THE VENUE:

Bridgeson Pond Park is a testament to the serenity that Caryton has to offer. The weather forecast for the day of the performance is a light sprinkle, so every seat on the pondside view of the stage will be equipped with overhead umbrellas and extra blankets for your comfort. The seating will be arranged in an arc, taking advantage of the natural hills to ensure that everyone has an equal view of the performance. Feed the ducks as they bumble past the performers. Enjoy the complimentary hot chocolate and steaming hot rice krispie casserole at one of our many food gazebos. Just because it's raining doesn't mean you have to get wet! If you have kids with you, take advantage of the playground a few blocks back to keep them occupied, supervised by our finest. There will be no alcoholic beverages sold and tobacco, alcohol, soft and hard drugs, pornographic products, or e-cigarrettes are completely banned. If you have these items on you, you will unfortunately be detained and tried by Carytonic police. Rules aside, significant contributions from tithe and tax money from Bridgeson Residents have arranged a seating arrangement capable of hosting 5,000 people! Seating is limited, so buy your tickets in advance!

THE STAGE:

Set for a pondside performance, feel one with the waterfowl and fish as you serenely cascade along the dormant waters of the Bridgeson Pond! There are multiple floating discs to stand on. The smallest one is big enough for one person, and the largest can fit a full orchestra and choir, with all sorts of sides in between. Do not be deceived by the simplicity! Take advantage of fountains and mist to display 3D images of something! The stages dynamic lighting works just like a spotlight but capable of illumining you from all sorts of angles! Built in pyrotechnics so you can fight against the delicate pitter patter of rain and gray skies with all sorts of fire! The stage at night for later performances is absolutely beautiful. Let the delicate raindrops fall onto you as you sing your ballad of love, or use them to evoke pain and sorrow! There are multiple telescreens for viewing comfortably no matter where you're seated, and dynamic sound makes sure your voice carries, even throughout the open air! The judges will be seated in a ranger station overlooking the pond where they will have high quality video and audio review!

THE HOST:

Latanya Anderson, famed for her gospel music, is making a comeback on WV but not as a performer! Known for her voice and humanitarian work, she serves the interests of the Church in her own soulful ways. Recently, she was made president of the Church's Youth Outreach Program, helping young souls both at home and abroad. She was recently awarded the Goldie award for the years of 2018 and 2019, for "best Carytonic musician".

Built off of simplicity, this minimalist yet aesthetic style will offer no fluff, but an aesthetically pleasing design.

My position on the televote: I don't like the idea of it. But I wasn't able to see it in practice (and have not been paying attention to discord enough over the past month to follow the debate on the issue) so I don't know what each side is arguing.

Sorry I've been absent for a while, I took a hiatus while I was in Alaska and then have been settling in to my night shift job which I'm working til August now (w/ time alongside for NS and other things). "Welcome to Izmepisma. 9 songs have been chosen out of a field of hundreds waiting for their shot at Izmedu's WorldVision baton, but only one song can remain standing"

Prudencija N's 2nd place in the previous editions came as both a profound shock and pleasant surprise to RTI's WorldVision delegation. Despite the many risks and news sensations that surrounded the entry and the conflicted nature of its creation, Prudencija brought a result that bettered Jana Jusic's 3rd place and continues Izmedu's stunning record in the WorldVision Song Contest. With this at hand, RTI pushes onward with the Izmepisma format, the national final now truly becoming once more a cornerstone for the Izmeduan music industry.

With hype levels at a fever pitch and many artists wanting to try their hand at WorldVision, RTI fielded about 1,200 submissions from legendary names, small-time artists, and everyone in between. The pre-season was hit with constant speculation as to who might be submitting an entry, with even artists who are usually averse to WorldVision now willing to take the risk after Prudencija's success in Ertzei Kishim. With an eclectic set of submissions, the selection committee had to make tough cuts to whittle down the large field to 18 songs for the live televoting rounds. Even there, even more difficult decisions had to be made by the Izmeduan televoting public to reduce them down to the 9-song grand final that now stands before you. After an unimaginative entry brought a disappointing result for Hafämarimët's return to the contest, HafTV believes they have found their footing and a sure shot for a better placing in DoubleŽïlëp. A pop duo consisting of producer Žïlëp Cehmë and singer Žïlëp Sunečtë, DoubleŽïlëp are new to the scene, having met only a few months ago at an after-hours club in Bruhjë. A handful of incredible live shows brought them to the attention of Ajnë Vnečdet, social media manager for HafTV whose accidental retweet led to their song Büci Ačalbë being streamed over 2 million times in one day. Recognizing the unavoidable charms of DoubleŽïlëp, HafTV helped them select their next single, which they also offered to take to the WorldVision Song Contest. The Žïlëps happily agreed and Burn It Out was recorded over the next three days.

A personal and political plea, Burn It Out draws parallels between civil disobedience and emotional maturation, calling for the removal of harm from hearts and streets.
