He seemed very eager to have his eggs and hashbrowns, so much so that eating like that in public was almost a faux-pas, but she could live with it as long her eyes weren't directly on it.

Polish Prussian Commonwealth wrote:Otto and Helena; 0600 to 0630 hours

The morning had been a whirlwind for Otto and Helena, with both changing rapidly and getting into their clothes. After that, both headed downstairs; Otto after a brief prayer, Helena after checking that she had everything prepared for class. A quick shower after that for Otto, and a splash of water on the face for Helena, and both found themselves downstairs to the cafeteria.

Helena grabbed a packet of instant coffee, some orange juice, and a plate of butter and toast before settling down next to Emanuelle, while Otto grabbed a carton of milk and a tray of food(to be exact; tomato sauce, sausages, and bacon) and went outside to take his meal in peace and quiet, although he wouldn't object to company.

Suddenly, Emmanuelle found herself with someone on her other side, Helena to be precise. It struck Emmanuelle as slightly odd that the only food she was having appeared to be toast, and come to think of it, Slava's choice of just eggs and hashbrowns was also odd. Where was the meat, she wondered, as she finished her bacon sandwich.

"Morning Helena." said Emmanuelle cheerily, more so out of habit rather than any genuine joy. "This here is Slava..." she continued, motioning with her hand towards the boy on her other side. "...Slava, this is Helena."

Siobhán smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Rocco. Your sister has told me about you—good things, I can assure you," she quipped politely. "And," she turned to address Viga, "I'm sorry to hear about your eye. I've heard of that condition before. But... What is ONMI?"

"Perhaps you can tell me as we walk to go get breakfast." With that, she turned and began walking with them towards the dining hall.

"Oh sure, I will tell you more. And don't apologize for the eye, it gets me out of a lot of things." Ludoviga smiled.

Rocco leaned to her "I checked the schedule. There's supposed to be a mass. Bring your veil. And try not to eat too much." he suggested, but it felt more like an order to her.

"Give me a moment?" she asked Siobhán as she went back inside the room to get a little plastic zip bag that had her veil, putting it in her backpack. "To the cafeteria then? Lead the way Siobhán, you'd know better than us."

As they walked, Ludoviga remembered that Siobhán asked her a question "I'm sorry, earlier you asked me about the ONMI. How could I say it? The Opera Nazionale per la Maternita e l'Infanzia...hmm...well it would be in English the...National Org-"

"National Organization for the Protection of Motherhood and Infancy." Rocco interrupted "That would be the entire name. Ma, 'ONMI' sounds much better than 'ONPMI' to the ears. No?"

"Yes. Back to what I was saying, ONMI is a government education program. Or a social program, I don't know exactly which. It teaches girls about womanhood and motherhood. How to dress, how to act, how to spot good men. It also helps mothers, pregnant women, single mothers, et cetera. It's meant more for early teen and teenage girls. For little girls it's more of an etiquette course. Overall it is like a family thing, not necessarily just mothers or girls. It promotes heavily the idea of large families. I hear they even give out awards and rewards. A bit odd in my opinion. But, that's the sum of it. The idea of family is very big back home."

"The ONMI has a phrase," Rocco added "'Morte della Famiglia è Morte della Nazione'. Death of the Family is Death of the Nation. ONMI is the state's arm for family propaganda. And I say that in a good way."

Siobhán politely waited for Ludoviga and Rocco, while she thought about being told that she'd know where the cafeteria was better than the other two. Was Ludoviga just assuming she'd been here longer, and knew her way around? She pondered in her head, or is she implying that I'm fat... She chose to believe the first option. She didn't want to assume the worst of the person she'd be sharing a room with for the next few months.

"...Interesting," Siobhán said after a while of thinking what to say. Her actual thoughts about this new organization she'd heard of was that it sounded just plain awful. Forcing young women into the path of motherhood and childrearing? Forcing invasive relationship advice, like how to spot a good man? What a pain it would be to be a lesbian in this country, it seems... She shook these thoughts out of her head. Again, she wanted to try and think positively about Ludoviga and her country, lest something bad slip out.

"Is this ONMI group a required course for young women, then?" She asked inquisitively as she descended the stairs to the first floor, then walked to the dining hall. Once inside, she made a beeline to wherever she could find food and began to stock up. She was hungry, having exhausted herself walking all over town the day before. Taking a plate, she piled on plenty of sausage and eggs for protein.

Pausing a moment to swallow the eggs in his mouth, Slava responded, "Nice to meet you both. So, if I can ask, where are you guys from? I'm from the Gristolian Imperium, but Tyvia to be more exact. Not the warmest place, but we get on." He could not help, but to let out a chuckle at that last comment. While Tyvian summers were beautiful in their own right, most of the year saw Tyvia in freezing conditions. Even right now it was chilly, and the servants back at the Palace would be struggling with keeping the whole place warm.

As Slava kept thinking, he also became aware again of how he would need a bigger shirt. Hopefully it will not be too big of an issue, he thought, because after being stuck on several connecting fights to get here Slava was ready to let some energy out in PE.

Gallagher-Blair Hostel - Grangemouth, Dalmashiel, Folaisia.
Slowdive - When the Sun Hits
(XX/03/2020) - Dawn
Lechle entered the cafeteria, better-pressed then he looked yesterday. His normally dark and messy hair was combed down into bangs that fell over his right eye, faintly glistening of gel whenever he stood in the sunlight. Against tradition, he appropriately had his dress-shirt tucked in, and uniform jacket over his shoulders. Keeping a low profile, he avoided the more exotic foods of the cafeteria, opting for simple eggs, bacon, toast, and milk; a commoner's meal in any country. As he walked between stations, and flirted with domestic students in line, he locked eyes with Emmanuelle who was seated with two other students, also recognisable as foreigners. She seemed to be surviving as per usual and so Lechle decided to give her some due space, and let her settle in as she needed to.

Finding a spot to sit down, just by himself due to the fact he did not feel like intruding or talking at the moment, he crossed himself again and said another prayer in his native tongue drawing comfort from the language and prayer once more. With an amen he folded his hands down and began to partake in the reserved meal he had assembled for himself, content at least for now.

Recognising his roommate of which he hadn't had the opportunity to acquaint himself with, Lechle excused himself from a conversation with a local student to seat himself next to the solitary. He seemed older, either a Junior or a Senior; usually the social class that was more outgoing and confident, stepping into adulthood. Instead, his roommate seemed to be more of a loner, praying before his meals. Contrarily, Lechle held a homegrown respect for religion that Emmanuelle didn't share, and while he wouldn't be caught praying in public, there was commonality between him and the reserved student. Lechle sat down to his right.

Athelhart was picking away at his breakfast, in no real hurry to finish they weren't in any rush to leave at the moment so he could take this time mull over things. Granted his mind had been wondering to thoughts that were making him more than a tad bit homesick so with the arrival of one of his roommates, he was acquainted with Otto and Larsa so this must have been Lechle.

"Aye, that I am. It is odd that we missed each other till now, granted though last night was incredibly chaotic so that makes sense. I'm Athelhart Kin-Cenfrith. You must be Lechle, am I correct? Pardon me for not usin your last name for it, uh what's the word, flees from me... no escapes me. That's the phrasin!" He finished with a little bit of a chuckle stumbling over his words and mixing up his English.

Verity went to reach to sip from her coffee mug, only to realize that she had finished.

It was a smaller portion of coffee than she was used to, she had taken it because she wasn't quite sure how strong Folaisian coffee was. Now that she was educated in that she knew for s fsct that wanted a refill.

Aditionally, going for a refill would give her the opportunity to strut around a bit in a cafeteris that was signifncalt more populated then she first arrivied, perhaps she could eavesdrop into a conversation or two, get an idea of shat was on these studenfs minds, just before the first day of the term began.

"Hold that thought, Mary" said Verity, before she could answer her previous question.

"Excuse me, I'm going for a refill, I'll be back soon." she said, as she got up with the coffee mug.

Ludoviga followed Siobhán to the food line, though she herself didn’t get anything but a bottle of water. “OMNI isn’t exactly mandatory, but can a child say no to her parents? I went with my mother because I had nothing else. OMNI is meant more for, how they say...’high class’? It is not bad or something, it is ok. Made some good friends there. OMNI also runs orphanages, schools, daycares.” Ludoviga switch conversation, wanting to move away from the topic of the OMNI “So, what is your home like? See any boys here?”

Rocco on the other hand stood back as they entered the cafeteria, surveying room, mostly for any trouble, or those that look like they’d cause any. He saw a couple people, a cute girl here or there. Then he saw two boys sitting outside. Usually, in his experience, no one up to any good sits alone. Unless they were a monk. Outside would be better for a smoke anyways. Not one to eat before mass, Rocco just got a bottle of water and went outside to join the other two. “Buongiorno..eh..good morning. Rocco d’Arditi, and you two?” He introduced himself.

As Athelhart was conversing with Lechle another lad came up to the two and introduced himself. The foreign word, the hint of Latin dancing within it, that he used to begin his introduction was lost on him though, of course a simple use of logic would determine it was a greeting especially when followed with what he presumed was a translation. There was at least a small comfort to take in the company of other strangers in a strange land, he of course was a part of an exchange program. Athelhart cut off those thoughts from his mind though, he was of course in the company of two others and it would be a bad look for him if he gave the impression of spacing out.

“A pleasure to meet ya. I’m Athelhart Kin-Cenfrith as the good man, Le-” Athelhart started before he realized that he used his nickname. “As the good man Detlef said. That would you used, you must come from a country descended from Roma?” He asked before shifting into Latin ”Do you speak the old tongue by any chance?” There was no hiccups this time, Athelhart knew Latin almost as well as his native Camelonean Gaelic and the prospect of talking in Latin lifted his spirits slightly.

With the interest of just continuing his meal next to someone who was statistically improbable to carry a shank, a much larger and more imposing man startled Lechle from behind to introduce himself.

"Detlef? Amusing name. But not the real one is it?" he looked to the younger kid, a smirk plastered on his face. Then Athelhart introduced himself, questioning Rocco on where he came from. Then for some reason spoke in Latin. "Latin è per la Cura." he responded in his own tongue "Latin is for clerics, altar boys, and missals. Not an altar boy anymore. As far as where I am descend from, I come from Lux Pulchrae. The country might boast Roman roots, but I don't, so keep the Latin to yourself."

Rocco could not pin it but there was something off about the "Detlef" kid. "Che succede ragazzo? What is going on boy? Did some girl already take your balls? Or some guy?" his smirk turned to a grin "Per'aps I am homesick. Per'aps I spent too much time in the GN. But where I am from, we look at people in the eye when we speak, especially introductions. And 'Detlef' is too dumb of a name, even for a Francese." Rocco could spot a Frenchie a mile away. Being from the bordering edge of the San Lazzaro province, he knew how to spot his fair share of frogs. "What is your name?"

Is this guy trying to start a fight? Lechle wasn't ready for a fight, not against a Senior, not against an Italian, not against another foreigner. Nevertheless, he kept his fork in hand as he picked at his eggs. This Italian probably would love a skirmish to start the morning anyways, not that Lechle would oblige. Lessons from the street taught him to never get caught in fights, because to fight outside of a ring is to fight to kill, not to incapacitate. Whoever held back because of 'forseen consequences' will always end up losing teeth, and for a smoker, Lechle had perfect teeth. For the Italian, however, to be introduced to the three-syllables 'Athelhart' and to call foul for 'Detlef' while taking part in an exchange program suggested minimal intellect and capital braun. But the real powerplay is St. Peadrus MacCallion for inviting youths who trusted in racial profiling, yet act repulsed when profiled themselves. Clearly they weren't looking for the brightest, nevermind the whitest.

Regardless, the situation made him uncomfortable. Lechle instinctively fondled his jacket pocked for a cigarette before being reminded that today he carried none. There was no reason for Lechle to continue to amuse the Senior, nor to further acquaint his roommate. If he really wanted to, Lechle could just ... get up and leave. Walk away and de-escalate the situation. Maybe sit with Emanulle and indulge in her company. Or apologise to Otto for being involved. Even mess with Khalid who was sitting with two dames himself. Bid 'arrivederci' to any possibility of a fight.

Lux Pulchrae wrote:"What is your name?"

But Lechle hadn't yet finished his meal.

"S- so is it customary where you're from to interrupt a feasting man? Because if you're done talking in accents, I'd love to finish eating."

Lechle responded with a half turn, continuing to pick at his food. He still refused to make eye contact.

"You can watch from there if you'd like."

Rocco observed the boy, every movement, his body language, when he spoke. He seemed anxious and avoidant in an assertive presence, either he's had his share of trouble with law enforcement and parents or he's a big coward. Or maybe Rocco couldn't read people as good as he thought. He slightly chuckled at what Detlef had said "A feasting man? Where? Where is there any feasting men 'ere? All I see are boys. I am not a man yet. No, ragazzo, it is customary to introduce one's self with proper eye contact, and a clear, confident voice."

He never thought himself to be in a confrontational demeanor, Rocco was usually calm, and when he wasn't, they'd know. "Don't worry boy. I'm not going to beat you, not unless you try something. I am just 'ere to watch over my sister. I only walked over to you perche you looked like trouble. No offenses." he turned to Athelart when he said that last bit. "Are you trouble 'Deflet'? I 'ope not, and I don't want you to be. We could even be friends. Gli tre Amici! All three of us. Sing songs, paint each other's nails, talk about girls. Or we can do none of that and stay out of each other's way. Capisci? Eat well." he bid them a goodbye but before he went back inside, he stopped and turned around to the two boys.

Reaching into his jacket pocket, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes, then opening it and pulling out a cigarette "This is also customary back 'ome. But not for someone so young. Which has me think you are more trouble than you are showing me. To show I am not a bad person, I'll give you this." he extended his hand as if to give it to Deflet, but pulled it back quickly "After the mass, God does not like chemical lungs during the mass. When you come to get it, you will tell me your name and look me in my eye when you do. Au revoir." smiling as he returned to Ludoviga and dropping the smile by the time he reached their table.

'And a straight back. Maybe a finger purse too.' Lechle was barely understanding the man who's first name he already forgot, only remembered on a 'Stormtrooper' basis. The more the Italian droned on, the less threatening the situation became as the mellow was swaped for comedics. He spoke fast and his accent was bordering unintelligible, worsened by impromptu nativities that didn't help get his point across. It reminded him of the poor sterotypical Italian lingo he would hear at the movies. Lechle smiled, nodded, and continued eating, making it a point that he was exaggerating his attention-span to the Italian's verbal monologue.

Lux Pulchrae wrote:"Don't worry boy. I'm not going to beat you, not unless you try something. I am just 'ere to watch over my sister.

'Sister'. Lechle would make a mental note of that; the existence of a Miss Arditi. He'd make a physical note later.

Lux Pulchrae wrote:I only walked over to you perche you looked like trouble. Capisci? Eat well."

At some point during the Italian's verbal backwater Lechle not only made the complete transition from threatened to confidently bored, but also managed to finish eating. He looked back at his empty plate. He wanted to get up and away from the broken radio, but it blocked his path and he was afraid it might hit him if he got too close. If the Professors here talked as much as the Italian did, he was in big trouble, but someone had to tell him:

"You talk too much."

Lux Pulchrae wrote:Reaching into his jacket pocket, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes, then opening it and pulling out a cigarette

Lechle looked around to see if the other chaperones, passerbys, and students arriving for the morning were indeed seeing what he was seeing. Then he looked at the exterior security cameras. Then to the Senior he was sitting with, before returning to the cigarettes. More importantly, Lechle failed to recognize the brand that the Italian was waving around. Most likely gas-station tier, but he couldn't be certain. Maybe he could flip it for profit, sell it off as a rare commodity for Folaisians.

Lux Pulchrae wrote:"This is also customary back 'ome. But not for someone so young. Which has me think you are more trouble than you are showing me. To show I am not a bad person, I'll give you this." he extended his hand as if to give it to Deflet-

Lechle leaned back. Great. He was an Italian and a cop. 3rd rule; never accept contraband from strangers, although Lechle never said anything about offering it to strangers. Regardless, he wasn't going to touch whatever the Italian gave him unless he sees the Italian smoke right out of the same packet first.

Lux Pulchrae wrote:but pulled it back quickly "After the mass, God does not like chemical lungs during the mass. When you come to get it, you will tell me your name and look me in my eye when you do. Au revoir." smiling as he returned to Ludoviga and dropping the smile by the time he reached their table.

Lechle recalled the Roman Catholic Priests at home who smoked so much between sermons it could subsitute for incense. For a moment Lechle considered the Italian's offer but promptly disregarded it. He couldn't afford to associate with someone so reckless with contraband. As soon as a teacher grabs the Italian, dominos will fall until someone cuts open Lechle's bag, which isn't good for business or a disciplinary record.

He waited for the Italian to leave, before turning to Athelhart, who was still sitting with him.

"He's gonna get bagged. He trips up once, -and with his attitude he will-, and all the students who saw him will be talking about how he was flashing cigarettes on school grounds."

Lechle picked up his empty tray, located an nearby garbage bin, and dumped his trash.

"Then the gossip gets worse. Now he was using it. Then he was selling. Sooner or later a VP' or a Liaison' will go back on the cams'; they don't care what you do with them, only that you had 'em in your hand."

In truth, Lechle wasn't worried about the Italian. He didn't force his stash on him so he had no reason to worry. At this point he was more interested in meeting his sister; he couldn't help but wonder if all Pulchraeans were equally thick-headed. But first Lechle still needed to know what type of guy the man he was sharing a room with was; it was the primary reason he bothered to come over, and the Italian provided him the perfect opportunity. He rolled his eyes and feigned disappointment:

"Kids don't take the rules seriously but I've seen expulsions being handed out over and over back at my school; it's universal conduct."

Lechle leaned closer to Athelhart as he was walking by him again.

"You're not gonna Narc' on him, are ya'?"

For once at this moment she was at a loss of words. To be honest she didn't know. Everyone said what she could become, a politician, a doctor, a scientist, a teacher. But what did she want? Even she didn't know. Now she was feeling foolish. "I....I don't know." She honestly replied. "I guess I've just never thought about it. It's bad, I mean I'm technically able to be an adult. All it would take is my sister to say, Momiji is 14 and I wish to declare her as an adult under Hoshino Traditional Law. But I just never thought of it. It all seemed so far away until recently. Until my teacher from back home urged me to try a semester abroad to see how I'd do and how I'd like it."

Larsa sympathized with her, but not entirely in the way most would think. Due to his own background, he basically had his future mapped out for him. If for some reason he wasn't a Solidor, what would he be...?

Eek, another tough question. Really much of her life sunup to sundown was working and going to school. "I suppose I'm bookish. I like books really. My teacher would always give me one, or my Priestess or even my sister. Every week something new. Don't know why really but they just did and well I just took up reading a lot. Ya know it's just ...the idea of real spare time for kids in the islands is still such a novel concept. Before that it was always sunup to sundown work of some kind. Whether that's caring for your siblings, working with your parents or siblings or whoever was caring for you. If you're raised under a Convent you study to become a Priestess. Live on a farm, you farm, fisherman family you work. That is changing now, more as time moves on. The islands become a bit more settled, new ideas come in. We're people of tradition, always will be, but things are changing for sure. I guess I'm one of those caught in the middle of that change. Too old to be leisurely too young to really do the jobs most grownups like by big sis do. I work with her you know. She runs a little pub in our village. But I go to school too. I'm just naturally a curious person who likes to learn and understand things. Never been one to take anything at face value."

But as my sister says always, don't know what's gonna happen next week but tomorrow I'm gonna get up and gonna do what I always do. So I suppose i've always taken after her like that. I just try not to fret about the future but focus on the day ahead. Right now, she'd probably be having a meal or taking a bath and going to bed. Tomorrow morning which is tonight here, she'll be up getting tables set, getting food ready for our customers. She'll look at the sky and prepare for what the weather will do. Well that's what I'm going to do here. I'm going to go to classes, one step at a time and see what I learn from here. Maybe what I learn here is what's going to set me on a path that I realize. if I run a pub, run for Congress, become a reporter, become a teacher, get married, sail the high seas, buy land, then that's what I'll do when I realize that's what I want to do. 'Keep the Latin to himself?' Athelhart thought to himself, only the Northmen still used Latin for their Mass but even then it is mixed with Church Gaelic, and it was taught for academic and religious reasons to translate the Vulgate for themselves and other early Church documents. That and sometimes the regional dialects were so thick that speaking Latin was a necessity if you traveled to far in Camelone, even though Camelonean Gaelic had ethnic and regional variations the Latin language always remained the same. No this interaction was not going well and Athelhart couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the way Rocco was demeaning them, amused by his words, he heard worse during the openings of a flyting so he just let it roll of his back.

The offer of cigarettes was an odd occurrence though, it was such a vagabond and criminal commodity back home, the cigarettes that was not tobacco in general. A proper Camelonean smoked either a cigar or a pipe not those disposable and teasa damned highly processed tobacco sticks, being generous with even calling them tobacco. With Rocco walking away he thought that was that but then Lechle got up and threw his stuff out talking about the rules and how Rocco did something stupid which Athelhart surely agreed with. He knew the rules here and the anti-smoking regulations so it was not the wisest move to flash those cigarettes around but oh well nothing to really do about it and he wasn't going to make a fuss about it.

"I assume narc is another word for snitch? If so then no, I'm not just because he likes vagabond sticks and it would be cowardly to do so behind his back. Good pipe tobacco or a nice cigar would be best, hell even a bastard cigar would be better than those vagabond sticks... I should ask the headmaster if I could write home and request my pipe and some good tobacco with it." Athelhart responded as he got up as well "I know there are many things I can do back home under the supervision of the lodge or tavern that I can not do here but it's worth an ask. One other thing." He said becoming more serious "If he starts giving you a tough time tell me, I'll sort things out. You seem like a nice fellow Detlef, I pray that we continue on this path."
