Dominicus Schmeetz was born in the small rural village of Nijswiller in the Limburgian countryside. His childhood was somewhat unremarkable and dull, and he spent most of his days playing outside with his mates. When political instability rocked the Dutch province of Limburg, the young 10-year-old Niek was simply too young to understand what his country was going through. His father, a farmer, gave up his field to go fight for home and hearth, and rose through the ranks due to his bravery and valour in combat. Niek's father never quite trusted the new regime under Generalissimo Bovens, and though he welcomed all the benefits and privileges that he and his family enjoyed due to his promotions and fame, he knew that war was horrible, and had watched his friends die in the streets of Venlo.
When the war ended, Niek was but 12, and he started reading state pamphlets, describing the brutal former occupation of the country and the valiant fight that all Limburgians put up. The young Schmeetz was susceptible to propaganda, and thus he started reading about Limburgian history, and about the glorious struggles of independence that farmers and local land owners had participated in against bloodthirsty tyrants from the north. This is where his disdain for anything closely resembling Dutch culture came up. After his 15th birthday, the young Niek joined the ruling party's youth organisation, the Vrije Limburgse Jeugd or "Free Limburgian Youth". His father, though he disliked his son's pathway in politics, didn't stop him from joining, as he felt that that could reflect poorly on himself and turn him into a target for the secret service. Dominicus joined the newly-founded Theodorus-van-Amaseagymnasium, the first official "State School" of the Limburgian state. He was taught a regular school curriculum, as well as paramilitary courses such as pathfinding, leadership courses and weapons training. This made it easier for Dominicus to enroll in the Vrij Limburgs Legioen (Free Limburgs Legion), the 'elite' branch of the armed forces, infamous for its die-hard republican loyalist troops. Niek subsequently joined the VLL at the age of 16. He continued studying at the State School, but intensified his military training, which he much preferred to the boring lectures that he had to endure at school.

He feels that those subjects are very difficult because they are so precise and hopes to quit school as soon as possible for a fruitful career with the Legion. He hoped that he could mellow his somewhat extremist son by sending him to a foreign school, in the hopes that the socialization that occurred there may show him the true way.
