Fort Sumter, December 30th, 2019
The Counselor of Foreign Affairs walked into Consul Jennings’ office. The HRI had just joined the Depian Ocean Alliance, and a brand new age dawned. Much of the central Depian Ocean was now unified under a common military and trading bloc, one that was dedicated to mutual defense of the region from external influence. Especially Gagiumish influence. The DOA’s General Assembly also passed several new laws, including a scientific research sharing and a dissolution of trade barriers between member states. The DOA was well on its way to prosperity, peace, and order.
In domestic affairs, things were much less rosy.
In a heated meeting with his Chief of Internal Security, Director of Intelligence, and Attorney General, a significant but unsurprising revelation came to light.
“Mr. Consul, sir, we have intelligence that the Centralists were aided by the Gagiumish. We have reason to believe that Centralist state governors and Censors all knew and are complicit.” said his Chief of Internal Security, a quiet man named James Edgars.
“Well we’ve always known that. You expect me to be surprised?” replied the Consul.
“This time we got the information legally.” said his Attorney General, a short woman named Claudia Macron.
That made the Consul sit up and take notice. Information gathered in the past had always been obtained in methods technically banned by the Confederacy’s Terms of Confederation. But this time…
“So what’s the problem?” asked Jennings.
“Sir, we have reason to believe that the state militias of states under Centralist control would not respond to the order to arrest major party figures.”
“Then we’ll send in the Confederal Army. Their party is having a major convention tomorrow, in New Hastings, right?”
“Yes sir.”
“Find me the nearest army units, and deploy them. Show of force.”
A convoy of two Rhino IFVs [OOC: think a Ratel with a 40mm cannon] and four Lions [OOC: think a VXB 170] rolled down the highway towards New Hastings’ capital of the same name. Each of the Rhinos had a 40mm cannon and could hold up to eight men in the rear compartment. Both Rhinos held three soldiers with five empty seats, and the four Lions each held four passengers, a driver, and a turret gunner with a heavy machine gun.
The convoy rolled in front of the convention center. The troops in three of the Lions disembarked and formed a perimeter in front of the building. The troops in the fourth and six of the soldiers from the Rhinos entered into the building. Pushing, shoving, and threatening their way through the armed guards the soldiers served arrest warrants for the major Centralist leaders present. Not all the major leaders were there, however. Censors Rivers, Black, and Livingston, along with the governors of Cranmer and Hanover were not there. However, three governors and Censor Savoy, Rivers’ right hand man, were all arrested.
The four prisoners were dragged into one of the Rhinos along with two guards. The other four soldiers from the Rhinos piled into the other APC, and the rest of the troops got back into their Lions. The convoy began rolling out of New Hastings, amid a hail of rocks and curses by the local police.
However, about eight miles out of New Hastings a wrecked semi-truck cut off the convoy’s route, a narrow highway through the tropical forest. The lead Lion pulled off the road before a shoulder fired missile blew it up.
The turret gunner in both of the Rhinos and the remaining three Lions raked the tree line where the missile had come from. Suddenly another missile fired out and impacted one of the Rhinos, but was misfired and deflected off the well sloped armor.
Sergeant First Class Edwards, now the commander of the force after Lieutenant Cregg was killed by the missile, ordered a perimeter to be formed around the APC with the prisoners. Gunfire began to pick up as members of the New Hastings Militia advanced on the soldiers.
“They’re coming from all directions!” screamed a private as he fired his service rifle at the incoming militiamen.
“Let them eat heat!” yelled a triggerhappy turret gunner as he sent off a burst towards a squad of militia.
Sergeant Edwards took out a field radio and began screaming into the receiver, “Warlord this is Anvil 2-1 actual, we are taking small arms and RPG fire from the tree line, we are surrounded and need immediate air support, over!”
“Anvil 2-1, we have air support on the way, ETA fifteen minutes, over. Until then you are authorized to use the Rhino’s heavy cannons.”
Two jeeps of the New Hastings Militia rolled down the highway towards the stopped convoy. One of the Rhinos turned its cannon and barked out a few shots, destroying one of the jeeps and flipping the other. The other Rhino turned and shot several 40mm rounds into the tree line.
Another RPG fired and impacted and destroyed a second Lion, killing the gunner and the three soldiers taking cover behind it. A sniper killed another turret governor, eliminating the machine guns on one side of the perimeter. The militiamen rushed that side, killing more of the soldiers. The rear pintle mounted gun on one of the Rhino’s began to open up, scything down a squad of militia, but it wasn’t enough. The soldiers in the Rhinos were killed, and the one without the prisoners was destroyed when a brave militiaman jumped atop it and tossed a grenade into it's hatch.
An attack helicopter flew overhead, and unleashed missiles, blowing through the semi-truck blocking the road. Their obstacle gone, the last two Lions (and the six soldiers still alive) and Rhino peeled out. An RPG fired and hit the hovering helicopter, which went down.
Of the two Rhinos, four Lions, and 30 infantry, only one Rhino, two Lions, and 12 soldiers were still alive, but their prisoners were in custody.
Both pilots of the helicopter were captured and pulled out of the wreckage by the militia.
An aide rushed into the room where the Consul and his family were eating dinner with a panicked look.
“Sir. You’re needed in the SitRoom.”
