Newriver to Create Springmont’s First Free Trade Zone

by Alan Capebilling

Newriver’s mayor, Brigadier (ret.) Mike Broomelay, has stated that the city wishes to create Springmont’s first free trade zone in a three-year development project that will link and upgrade the city’s existing bonded facilities in Clearwind Creek.

Free trade zones provide a more comprehensive range of tax-friendly facilities than bonded zones, and the Newriver Clearwind Creek Free Trade Zone is expected to offer foreign-denominated offshore banking, financial leasing, cross-border financing, and international trade settlements. Of particular note is the intention to operate foreign-denominated offshore banking, a move that would for the first time provide operational bank accounts in Springmont with exemption from oversight and regulation by Springmont’s banking authorities.

In order to fully instigate the proposed zone, the Newriver government will need to coordinate with ministerial bodies including the Ministry of Finance & Trade, the Ministry of Industries & Energy, and the Economic and Trade Advisory Board.

Bushoattle's revenue rises to RM13.22b

by Rachel von Therson

Bushoattle Banking Group (Bushoattle) recorded a higher net profit of $T2.05 billion in the first quarter ended March 31, 2020 (Q1 2020), up 13.3 per cent from $T1.81 billion in the same period last year. Revenue soared to $T13.22 billion from $T12.98 billion previously, it said in a filing to Springmont Stock Exchange on Thursday. The country’s largest bank by assets said its net fund based income grew marginally by 0.9 per cent, net fee based income rose 53.2 per cent, while net operating income increased to $T6.72 billion.

The results translate into a return on equity of 10.6 per cent and earnings per share of 18.2 sen, up 11.4 per cent from 16.4 sen per share in the same period last year. Bushoattle Chairman Jennifer Cutworth said a steady result was achieved in Q1 despite the significant market volatility and disruption as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak. Meanwhile, Group Chief Executive Officer Leon Grasswillow said the Q1 results is not representative of the way the bank will perform for the rest of the year.

“The largest contributor came from the sell-down of some of our liquid assets and fixed income instruments, which was above the optimal level. This resulted in a 53.2 per cent rise in our net fee based income, which then lifted our net operating income by 14.7 per cent. Grasswillow said the bank expects the operating environment for the rest of 2020 to remain uncertain and sensitive to the kinetics of the pandemic as well as the outlook for treatment and vaccines, which will have implications to public health and economic policies.

Exercise SPAID 2020 on the way

by Sue-Ann Crestwind

From Jun 28 to 30 in the airspace of Montian, the first national air force exercises, SPAID 2020 (Strike Phase And Interdiction - Deep), will be held this year, which will test the training of flight crews and ground technical services for carrying out operations using nuclear weapons.

According to Experts of the air force, today, it is planned to use the Fi-880 Comet Fighter and FgA-1100 Meteor Ground attack aircraft, as well as Ca-736T1 Fuelstar refueling planes in the exercises, which will work out the whole spectrum of issues regarding flights at different altitude levels, refueling in the air, overcoming air defense zones of a conventional enemy and the practical use of conventional nuclear aviation ammunition.

In related event, The Montian Ministry of Defense became interested in the possibility of replacing Godwill-2 tactical nuclear missiles with variable power warheads in service. This, according to local news, said the Minister of Defense & Security, Pedro Stein, MP. According to him, the promising missile will receive the designation Godwill-3; its preliminary development has already begun. In advanced ammunition, several technologies can be used.

As Stein noted, among the possible technologies for a promising missile, stealth and the possibility of flying at hypersonic speed are considered. Presumably, the new ammunition will be able to reach speeds of up to seven Mach numbers (about eight thousand kilometers per hour). All new Godwill-3 technologies should help the missile overcome promising enemy missile defense systems that may appear in the next 20-50 years.

In parallel, the possibility of upgrading Godwill-2 missiles, which are part of the armament range of the FgA-1100 Meteor and Comet fighters, is being considered. The development of the project for the modernization of ammunition will be carried out in two stages. As a result, the Montian military intends to get a modified ammunition that will effectively overcome modern and promising enemy missile defense systems until at least 2035.

Tumpek Wariga
A Celebration for Plants

Pemecutan Puri - Week of Wariga (Wuku Wariga) is the seventh week of Pawukon Calendar, Pemecutan traditional calendar. On this week, there is one special celebration that fall on Saturday, the last day of the week. The celebration is call Tumpek Wariga. It is sometimes known as Pemecutan Environment Day. The naming is based on the nature of the celebration in which the Sanatanan believer pray towards Sang Hyang Sangkara (God Sangkara) which is known as the God of plants or the guardian of plants.

On this day, farmers and planters gives offering on a small temple which dedicated to Sang Hyang Sangkara. Some of them also put the offerings directly at the base of their plants as plants is believe to be the abode of the God. They pray for healthy growth of their plants so it will give them a good amount during the harvest time. Because it is a day for the plants, farmers and planters avoided themselves to pick fruits, leaves, seeds or anything from the plants. Besides in farms and plantations, people in the city usually also gives offerings towards the tree(s) that are consider holy or sacred. The offerings are made to bring a balance between human (Pawongan) and their environment (Palemahan).

In recent time, Tumpek Wariga become more and more important. The global warming and plastic waste issue have made this celebration as a getaway to tend for the environment more. To remember the important of environment and also to balance between human and their surroundings, Tumpek Wariga is being reintroduce as Pemecutan Environment Day. Some even says that the day is Pemecutan own Earth Day. These new concept are welcomed not just by Sanatanan believer but also other citizens in general.

The Iron Day

Image

Pemecutan Puri - In the Pawukon Calendar use by Pemecutan, today is marked as the day to worship Sang Hyang Pasupati or known as Tumpek Landep. However the population of Pemecutan usually call this day as Otonan Besi or The Iron Day. So what's the connection between these two naming? Officially, the day to worship Sang Hyang Pasupati is known as Tumpek Landep because it is fall on Saturday of the Week of Landep or at the 14th day of Pawukon calendar. Tumpek itself comes from the tampa which mean descend or from the word tumampek which means to land. While Landep means sharp. Traditionally, during Tumpek Landep people will worship Sang Hyang Pasupati in His form of sharp objects especially which has a connection with weaponry such as keris (Pemecutan traditional sword) or spear/pike. But nowadays, the objects associated with the day have been broaden to includes vehicles, computers and even home appliances like refrigerator or stove.
Sane penting merupa besi. Nape je sane melakar antuk besi nike sampun dados anggen.
What matters is iron. Anything made of iron can be used

- A random housewife

This fact sometimes makes people confused on what the essence of the day is. Ida Pedanda Aji Saka which we interview mention that Sang Hyang Pasupati is indeed known as the creator of many weapons for the God. Through the process of sacralization these weapons are believe to have a life in it. That's why during Tumpek Landep the main objects to be use as a medium of worship is weaponry. While the master of weaponry, Pande Surya Taksaka says that the meaning of Tumpek Landep is more broader than just the creation of weapon. The sharp in Landep meaning is not referring to any sharp object but referring to human brain. Known as the creator of God's weapon, Sang Hyang Pasupati use thee brain to discovered new things. So in this sense, any creation and invention that are based on human thought can be use as the medium. The referring towards iron is because in the old days iron is the hardest objects to be known and it has to going through many steps of processing before it can be use. That is why weapon and iron based objects are use as a medium to worship Sang Hyang Pasupati during Tumpek Landep.

The government has long started a campaign to reintroduce Tumpek Landep as Invention Day. Because on this day, people truthfully celebrating each and every invention that being made by human being. This day is also use by the government to acknowledge any accomplishment made by its citizens in the field of science and technology.
We believe that this referring can encourage our scientists and inventor to create or inventing new things which can ease the every day life of our people.

PM Muhammad stresses peace, kindness in his Yom Kippur address to the nation

Image
Samuderan Jewish community is tiny, but holds significant history.

Melaka, Samudera Darussalam

Samudera's prime minister Kayang Muhammad paid tribute to the Jewish community of the country during his Yom Kippur greetings. Through a video released on his social networks, Muhammad emphasizing the importance of Yom Kippur in Judaism and for Jews.

"Starting from 15 to 16 September, Jews in Samudera Darussalam and around the world will mark the tenth day of Tishrei, which is a sacred occasion for their community."

In his message, the prime minister also reiterated that self-reflection, kindness, and peace is central to the holy day, and that the lessons may also be learned by Samuderans from every community.

"In Jewish tradition, three things must be done to gain atonement on Yom Kippur. They are praying, repent on one's sins, and giving to charity, or also known as tzedakah. These are great values to have. I want to emphasize that caring about each other, especially, is what makes a community great."

Muhammad seems to have the Melaka's grave vandalisation case in mind when he remind the nation that once again, Samuderan Jews belong to the country just like any other Samuderan citizens do.

"The Jewish community, just like any other community in Samudera Darussalam, have contributed a lot to our development and prosperity. From merchants to doctors, from teachers to members of the Majelis, you can see their accomplishment everywhere despite the small size of the community. They have proved that through hard work, you can achieve almost anything."

Despite its tiny size, the Samuderan Jewish community has considerable influence in Samuderan society. Riya Cohen made a headline last week when she managed to win the mayoral election of Padang, becoming the city's first woman as well as Samuderan first Jewish mayor. One of the current members of the Majelis, Yosef Naftali of Green Earth Party, is also Jewish.

Samuderan Jewish history officially begins during World War II, when Samudera offered asylum for fleeing European Jewish refugees. While little seems to have taken the offer, those who come generally stay and assimilate into the greater Samuderan society, establishing the country's first Jewish community. Until now, relations between the Jewish and other communities remain decent, with Jewish participation in the national development post-independence is well-known. However, conflicts in the Middle East may present a challenge to the historical harmony, as proved by the Jewish graveyard's vandalization in Melaka.

"We are thankful that Samudera, to this day, have shown itself to be a wonderful, welcoming land of opportunity for us." Rabbi Adrian Baruch of the Melaka synagogue stated, when Khabar Samudera approached him for interview. "The increase of anti-semitic attacks are concerning, but they are only done by a small minority. So far, the government and the great majority of Samuderans are really supportive and helpful towards our community. We can't be more grateful."

The EDV project, which will be developed on 275 hectares of land in Eastfield Valley, is part of the initiative to make the Eastern Valley District Economic Region (EVDER) the country's dairy valley. EVDERDC in a statement said EDV, which will be fully operational in 2023, is expected to produce 5.1 million liters of fresh milk annually, increasing the country's milk production by 11 percent.

Apart from that, he said, the project would also create more than 100 new job opportunities and 30 agropreneurs among the local community. “EDV is a major agribusiness project under agrofood@EVDER which is an integrated initiative for agricultural and food products that includes the EVDER Dairy Valley development project. Anggara Wage Wuku Ugu, Pawukon 1784

Talk The Talks

Tegeh Kori - Yesterday, the long awaited meeting about the future of the country is finally open. The Dharma Sabha building located in Tegeh Kori is selected as the host for the event of the year. Many high ranking officials are present including Patih Madya Ngurah Agung Kusumajaya, Patih Agung Jero Kepaon, Speaker of Krama Sabha Sang Ayu Putu Pradnyawati, Speaker of Nagari Sabha Jero Agung Bongkasa and several ministers. Other interesting delegation is the representative of the protesters, Made Dwipa Handayana and Ni Luh Ayu Sekarini. Despite one of their friend is being convicted for murder attempt towards Patih Madya, they are still being invited to join the important meeting. The meeting would likely to resolved the issue that have shaken the domestic atmosphere of the country. Starting with the incident involving the previous Ratu Hawir Bhuja, Pemecutan Paramount King until the shooting of Patih Madya in Kanginani capital, Mengwi. This situation have to be resolved once and for all.

Like we said in the previous part, the issue was started by the incident involving the previous Ratu Hawir Bhuja. His action to kill his half brother in an undisclosed reason have lead to him being force to abdicate. The Rajya Sabha, Council of Kings, even have strip his nobility status although it is not affecting his family. Thus making his son, Crown Prince Dharma Negara still eligible to become the next Ratu Hawir Bhuja. This incident leads to a series of demonstration around the country especially in Kanginan. They feel ashamed with their Paramount King's behavior and demand a change. They were also don't want to be associated with the Paramount King himself. Pemecutan intelligent even given warning that a possible of uprising happening in Kanginan. Although the uprising never came but the life of Patih madya was at stake after he was shot in a short distance during a speech in Mengwi. But the shooting incident is the reason why the government finally willing to make a compromise. As the first talks between the representative of the protestors and the government ended in an ambiguity.

Political expert, Arya Surya Wisesa said that the talks might lead to a huge change within Pemecutan. "Hopefully, they don't pressing about the name change," he said. In a few occasion of the protests, the protestors sometimes chanting about their demands to change the name of the country so they won't be associated with Pemecutan anymore. Actually, the name Pemecutan is use interchangeably to refer to the country as a whole and also to one of its constituent state. Although sometimes, in some situation, the constituent state is refer as "Pamecutan" or "Bhumi Pamecutan" to avoid the confusion. While some other times, the country as a whole s refer as "Uni Pemecutan" and the state with just Pemecutan. But still, if they are to press the issue than a major change is needed to any government documents both domestically and internationally which makes the works will be double or even triple. But Wisesa thought that the name change would be their last things to be talk about. The first and foremost is about the structure of the government. Nowadays, despite Pemecutan is known internationally as a unitary country but its constituent states have been given a lot of power so they are resemble a federation rather than a true unitary. Some might say that Pemecutan is an asymmetric decentralized unitary state where Kanginan and Petang Island have a high degree of autonomy compare to Bhumi Pamecutan even though all 3 constituent states have their own devolved government.

Speculation about the changing of the government structure have become a hot topic in social media. There is also a rumor that the anti-government side will seek to constitutionally reform Pemecutan from a unitary state into a federal one or even a confederation. Wisesa said that changing Pemecutan into a confederation might be an extreme approach but it is not impossible. Most of the time, Pemecutan aka Bhumi Pemecutan have control much of the country's politics and economy with the 2 other states have to abide to Pemecutan politicians demand. This can be seen in the proportion of the Krama Sabha. There are 83 MPs seats for Bhumi Pemecutan alone which account to 66.4% of the total seats in Pemecutan lower house. Their voice alone can be use to blocking any bills that don't favoring the state position. And in reverse, their voice alone can passed the bills that favor them. While in confederation, the power of central government will be limited with any bill passed have to be ratified by the constituent states before it can be implemented in the said state. However, Wisesa think that the government will avoid that option as they are afraid of the possibility of Pemecutan dissolution.

While the meeting has just begin and many things will be discuss in the coming day. Speculation may come and go but everyone will have to wait patiently with the meeting's result. Although they have to make this meeting as the last resort to end this issue. As Pemecutan will welcome several events in the coming years. The commemoration of 100th independence day of the country, the coronation of Ratu Hawir Bhuja and Pemecutan General Election are all scheduled in 1786. A delay in the process might affected all events.

The Referendum Continue

After the passing of Law on the Referendum of Keise Islands Self-determination by the Parliament of Keise Islands, today the referendum is schedule to be held. The called for a referendum have been long overdue but it was constantly rejected by the Federal Parliament of Kieraha in which Keise Islands is one of its state. However, on going tension between the islands and mainland Kieraha has led to the Keise Islands Parliament to passed the law which would given permission to a non-binding referendum for the island's future. The result of the referendum would become a recommendation for the Federal Parliament to deal with issue regarding Keise Islands status. However, the Federal Parliament have warn the State Parliament and State Government of Keise Islands to not continue their action.

Historically, Keise Islands was a vassal state of the historical Kieraha Confederation, a confederation of 4 kingdoms located in Ketam Gulf, north Mandalanusa main island. This confederation control the trade route in the northern part of Mandalanusa. The port of Gam Lammo and Tomagoba were two most important ports in north Mandalanusa before the Lusitan established Porto Espinhosa in today's Acastanha. Keise Islands become the last remnant of the confederation glorious past that still under their control. But the different of culture, language and religion have drifted the island state further from their mainland. These differences that also led to the rise of Keise nationalism with the aim of secession from Kieraha. In the past decade, strikes and protests have been held in various occasion centered on their capital, Tual. But the Federal Parliament give little to no attention to those actions. And this attitude that made the Parliament of Keise Islands made there drastic move by passing the referendum law.

The course of the referendum is simple. The voters will only given a single question; "Do you want Keise Islands to become an independent state?". And they need to answer between Yes or No. Poll stations are spread over the 5 islands under the administrative of Keise Islands State. The state government aimed for a success referendum with more than 50% turnout so it can be use as a reference for the Federal Parliament. Elsewhere in the capital of Kieraha, Gam Lammo, the Federal Parliament currently held an extraordinary meeting. The news of the referendum which will be held today seems to have been reach there. And the Federal Parliament took action after their warn was ignored by the authority of Keise Islands. "This is an illegal action. Only the Federal Government that have the power to held a referendum," said one of the MP. While the spokesperson to the government of Keise Islands stated that they won't back down. "This is what the population of Keise Islands wants and they have to hear from us," she said.

While the situation at the poll stations are very conducive. No threats are seen and people get to the voting booth in order. As there is no survey institute that hold a quick count in this event, it is likely that the result will only be known after it is announced by the state government or by the state election authority. Spokesperson to the State's election authority mentioned that the result should be known a few hours after the poll stations are closed at 8 pm local time, tonight.

It's Illegal and Unconstitutional

Gam Lammo - The Parliament of Kieraha quickly jump in response after State Election Agency in Keise Islands announced the result of their non-binding referendum. The Government of Kieraha is outraged with Keise's decision to held the referendum without approval from Kieraha as the central government. "This is an illegal move," stated the Minister of Internal Affairs, Achmad Dirham. While the Keise's government and state parliament are ready to pushed the result of their referendum as a recommendation for the central government to give their independence. The referendum resulted in 85% of the voters demand their independence. "This is the truth. This is the voice of the people and they should listen to them," comment Governor of Keise Islands, Octavianus Prima.

On the other hand, the result of the extraordinary meeting held by the Federal Parliament resulted in the referendum deemed unconstitutional and illegal. The result of the referendum is therefore considered void. The reason is because the referendum was held not under the authorization of Kieraha's authority as Keise Islands is part of Kieraha. And Keise as a province doesn't have the power to held such a referendum. The Supreme Court of Kieraha issued a statement that the referendum was in violation of Kieraha Constitution and anyone involved could be arrested as a traitor to the country. The statement from the Supreme Court was criticize by Keise's MP, Alan Juana. He said that the Supreme Court too exaggerated the situation and makes everything worse. The people of Keise were only voiced their mind, opinion and position of their future. Juana also accused of the Supreme Court are trying to stopped a fair democracy process.

This morning in Tual, a huge protest is currently happening. They are criticizing the statement from the Federal Parliament and the Supreme Court and chanted their demand for an independence for Keise Islands. They are also asked other nations in the region to recognized their referendum result and pushed Kierahan government to give them their independence. However, no other nation in the region have commented or making any statement regarding the referendum result.

2023 Samuderan general election: long queues and hope for a change

Image
Snaking queue outside a polling station in Ujong, Samudera Darussalam.

Bandar Raja, Samudera Darussalam

A general election to determine the composition of the latest House of Representatives was held on this morning on September 13 2023, with 112 seats are simultaneously being contested mainly among the 7 parties considered eligible to run for the election. As of 1 PM Western Melayu Archipelago Time, 15.2 million votes are estimated to have been casted in polling stations across the Crowned Federation. However, according to the Election Commission of Samudera (SPRS), votes by overseas Samuderans are still being processed and are yet to be added to the tally. Agus Budisman, a spokesman of SPRS spoke on the matter during a press conference outside the commission’s building in Bandar Raja: “There are a few complications in our polling stations in several countries, and in many cases, many of those reside overseas have yet to cast their votes for reasons yet to be determined. Regardless the commission promised to hasten the process and to ensure that this general election will proceed smoothly.”

The 2023’s general election is indeed full of surprises. On the day of election alone, a rising number of voter participation is recorded primarily in towns and urban areas across the country. A polling station in Puteri Aziza Medical University Park near the main campus complex in the city of Bandar Labuan is reported to have recorded “long stretch of voters” and asked for residents to come in a few “waves” as well as having asked for permission from the SPRS to lengthen the duration of voting due to heightened enthusiasm. Similar scenes are being reported in Ujong, Medan Putera, Mutiara, and Melaka with queues snaking into the street as many tried to vote early in the morning. “I came to a polling station near my dormitory to participate….you know, after everything went online.” An eager Bestari Purnama said. The public health major of the University of Northern Peninsula referenced to the online regional elections held during the pandemic in Samudranagara and Gadang states. “But woah, I didn’t think that there would be so many people there! Luckily there are free drinks and food courtesy of local volunteers to be enjoyed while we wait in the queue, hehe.”

The sentiment is shared by her fellow students. “I mean, I’ve participated in the previous general elections.” Mubarak Shihab, a pharmacy PhD student commented. “But this one may become the largest I’ve participated in yet. I’ve to wait for 15 minutes, something that I’ve never experienced before.”

These reports of rising voter enthusiasm on the streets correspond to the 85-88% voter participation predicted by the SPRS and various polling surveys, an increase from the previous 80% of the 2019 general election. There is a variety of reasons, but mediocre economic performance seems to be the main focus at hand. For the past 4 years, the nation’s economy has underwent a slump as a side effect of the COVID-19 global pandemic, and the government has received considerable amount of criticism for its failure to realize economic growth following the reopening of the country. While Mangkubumi Muhammad’s cabinet managed to retain its vote of confidence until nearing the end of its term, the end of the National Hope coalition with the exit of Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) has shaken the political map of the country. On the other hand, global warming and women rights also draw a lot of voters’ attention, the later thanks to the sexual harassment scandal in the Samuderan National Party (SNP) caucus and the perceived-slow response of the party that similarly attracts widespread condemnations, including from members of its fellow National Hope coalition in the Majelis. Political commentators from across the spectrum have opined that the scandal might cost the party its votes, particularly in the more progressive urban areas of the country. Such shift can already be felt in Martapura North, an electoral district that covers the northern areas of Martapura city that was previously a traditional stronghold of SNP, with candidates from other parties such as IDP seem to gain lead. “Everybody that I know now votes for either IDP or SHP.” Juleika Batubara, a local resident scoffed. “As a woman that works for a governmental office, I’m disappointed with how they (SNP) handle things.”

However, expectations that these events would cause a large change in the political map of the country would be wrong either. Various polls done by respectable institutions and organizations such as the House of Knowledge after the scandal shows that while supports for SNP declined even in electoral districts of West Saka and rural, suburban Samudranagara that make up the majority of the party’s voting base, SNP managed to retain a majority of supports in many of these areas, and shifts would not largely deal a huge blow. Nevertheless, many Samuderans seemingly holding hope for a change, and as a result a change of government is to be expected.

National Hope suffers defeat as Samuderans elect new government

Bandar Raja, Samudera Darussalam
Kayang Muhammad’s political alliance suffers a crushing defeat as the newly-formed Better Future coalition managed to secure a majority in the House of Representatives, reducing National Hope’s hold to just around 33% of the total seats in the lower chamber of the Majelis. The now-outgoing Mangkubumi has conceded on his party’s defeat in a press conference held two hours right after the Election Commission published the results of the general election, and revealed that after a round of discussion with other members representing the National Hope alliance, they decided to respect the election results and do not wish to contest any of it.

“I would like to say thank you to fellow Samuderans for having given us the opportunity to serve our country.” Muhammad said in his farewell speech during the press conference in Meilawati Palace. “Good bye, and I wish the best for the next government.”

The parties comprising Better Future are expected to form a new government soon after the results are out, likely at the end of the week, according to insider sources. From among its three members, that is the Islamic Democratic Party (IDP), Samuderan People’s Party (SPP), and Green Earth Party (GEP), it is expected that either Jelita Aini Kadir, the leader of IDP that currently holds the status as the largest party in the coalition, or Latifa Pamuncak, the rising leader of SPP, who will become the one to take up the mantle of Mangkubumi. Whoever will be chosen from the two, they will serve the distinction to be the second, as well as the youngest female Mangkubumi of Samudera for the current record. Ratna Salim, who becomes Samudera’s first female Mangkubumi, was years older than both when she was sworn into office in 2006 at 50 years old.

Results from the Election Commission showed that Better Future managed to win 56.8% and 66% of the electoral districts in the peninsular states of Samudranagara and Gadang, respectively, giving the coalition an easy control over more than half of the seats required in the lower chamber of the legislature to form a government, while National Hope manages only to retain Labuan and Cempaka with 54% majority. Rural and urban as well as ideological divides continue to play influence in the election, as more urbanized and liberal districts tend to go to Better Future while the more rural and conservative regions were mostly won by National Hope, with these patterns being repeated across the country. Even in Labuan and Cempaka, where National Hope gains a majority of its seats, large urban centers such as Mutiara and Bandar Labuan overwhelmingly vote for Better Future. Meanwhile in the country’s two federal districts, the seat representing the federal administrative capital of Bandar Raja went to Better Future, although the mostly rural West Saka was won by the highly conservative Islamic Unity Party (IUP), which continues to hold its stance as opposing the country’s official turn to secularism in 2018. Securing over only two seats, the Democrats once again became the smallest party in the House of Representatives that is not a part of any political coalition, although there are rumours brewing in social media about the Democrats possibly joining National Hope. If it were to happen, however, it can never replace the hole left by IDP that left the political coalition to join Better Future.

“IDP exiting the alliance perhaps play the biggest role in National Hope’s defeat.” Samuel Jacobs, a leading researcher of Samuderan politics who is affiliated with the respected House of Knowledge research institute remarked. “Say what you want, but having lost the country’s second largest party whose voter base is in urban areas, regions that comprise a lot of electoral districts in the Crowned Federation aside from having the largest amount of voters, doesn’t and won’t bode well.”

The defeat of National Hope after the last 12 years of its governance sparked mixed reactions among Samuderans. Some, such as Pagihari Gumelar, a professor of political science in the Royal University of Palembang, is not really excited. “It may be a new government, but the largest party in the winning alliance (IDP) was also a part of the previous government. Any change in law, or any economic or political reforms that they promise would make during the campaigns could also easily be proposed in the last government. While of course there are things that people will like to see to change with the election of this new government to power, I’d suggest for people to not get your hopes up too much." Others, such as Jacobs, however, choose to remain optimistic. “It is a momentous occasion, for sure. Samudera is entering a new era under a new government.” He said in response to the election results. “However, to say that this newly elected government would not make any big change compared to the last one perhaps would not be true. The Samuderan People’s Party, which previously only serve as a reasonably strong opposition throughout more than the last decade is making a resurgence in the politics, and now they have a lot of bargaining power, both as part of this new government as well as being the third largest party in the Majelis. The same thing could be said for Green Earth (GEP) now that they become a part of the elected-governing coalition. They have changed the dynamics quite a lot, and it is exciting to see what this would entail for future Samudera.”

Mangkubumi’s salary to fall below SDK 200,000 as Government decides to take pay cuts

Bandar Raja, Samudera Darussalam

The Cabinet has made a decision to implement a minimum of 10% pay cut for government ministers, where it will apply from the Mangkubumi down to deputy ministers of the Federal Government.

Previously, Federal Minister of Finance Arun Vaidyar had brought a proposal to the Cabinet before the middle of October which sees Mangkubumi Latifa Pamuncak take a 15% pay cut to SDK 170,323, while Wezir Jelita Aini Kadir will take a 12% pay cut, bringing her salary down to SDK 150,238. Other Cabinet ministers, as well as the Attorney General, will receive the similar amount deduction in their salaries, while deputy ministers will face a cut of 10%. The bill, which was then presented before the House of Representatives, was passed through majority voting last week in what is hailed as a victory for the Better Future Alliance, who won the general election last September. The new bill will then be brought before the Parameswara Council within this week to receive royal assent, although according to an insider source, Ms. Pamuncak, who has stayed in contact with His Majesty the King ever since the changes were approved by the House of Representatives, reportedly has said that “the bestowal of royal assent is guaranteed”. The Office of the Mangkubumi has declined to give a comment to this rumour, and stated that any change to federal budget will be made public once it has been formalized.

Ministerial pay cuts have been an issue in the federal government ever since June 2022. Under Muhammad’s Government, it was presented as part of the proposal to reduce government spending, although it falls short of the quorum at the voting stage due to the rejection from the Opposition and dissenting voices from the ruling National Hope alliance - primarily MPs from the Islamic Democratic Party, who deemed that proposed health and education budget cuts, which was included in the proposal, as “heartless”, especially during a global pandemic.

The new bill noticeably didn’t include a proposal for health and education budget cuts.

Samudera’s economy has faced a slump as a result of the pandemic and the strict measures the country took to limit its spread. As a result, as part of its previous campaign, the newly elected government has promised that they will include pay cuts to government ministers as part of their future policies to reduce government spending. In a press conference, the spokesman of the Office of the Mangkubumi has stated that once implemented, the money acquired from these pay cuts will be allocated to help fund various schemes that is intended to not only support ordinary Samuderans, but to also stimulate economic growth through the grant of incentives to key industries. “It’s one of the ways the government took to express its solidarity with the average Samuderan, who has struggled more in this new period of economic stagnation,” the spokesman said in response to a question. “It’s one of our ways to say, ‘that we are with you’.”

Football Experts Weigh in on the Controversial Use of Data Surveillance in the Sport

Image

In the rapidly evolving world of football, technology has firmly established itself as an integral part of the game. The latest development comes from FiXPro Inc., a pioneering tech company, which has introduced a groundbreaking football Data surveillance system aimed at monitoring players' performance and work efficiency. However, this innovation has ignited a heated debate among players, coaches, and pundits.

Data surveillance in sports is by no means a novel concept. Elite athletes have long been subjected to various tracking technologies, including GPS, heart rate monitors, and video cameras. These tools provide invaluable insights into player performance, aiding coaches and management in making informed decisions about team composition and player retention.

The centerpiece of FiXPro Inc.'s system is the Work Efficiency Index (WEI), a metric that quantifies a player's contribution to the team's success. This metric is derived from a complex algorithm that analyzes the vast array of data collected during training and matches. The WEI has gained considerable traction in football circles and is often used as a crucial criterion for player selection and contract negotiations.

However, this proliferation of data surveillance has raised concerns among players themselves. Many argue that the constant monitoring is invasive and infringes on their privacy, leading to increased anxiety and stress. Critics suggest that the focus on data can overshadow the human element of the game, eroding the joy and spontaneity that makes football so beloved worldwide.

Another bone of contention is the opacity of the WEI calculation. Players claim that the formula used to determine the WEI is shrouded in secrecy, and they suspect it can be manipulated to favor certain players or positions. This lack of transparency has led to skepticism among players, coaches, and fans alike, who question the fairness of such a system.

We reached out to renowned football expert, Thurman Strittmatter, for his insights on the matter. Strittmatter, who has spent decades in the football industry, expressed mixed feelings about the use of data surveillance in the sport. "There's no denying that technology has brought tremendous benefits to football, helping us better understand and improve the game," he noted. "However, we must strike a balance between data-driven decision-making and preserving the essence of football – the unpredictable and beautiful human element."

Strittmatter went on to emphasize the need for transparency in the calculation of metrics like the WEI. "Transparency is essential to maintain trust in the system. Players should know exactly how their performance is being evaluated, and there should be checks and balances to prevent any potential manipulation."

As football continues to embrace technology and data analytics, the debate over data surveillance's role in the sport is likely to intensify. Striking the right balance between performance optimization and player well-being will be crucial to ensuring that football remains a game cherished by millions worldwide.

Keise Islands Crisis: Samudera will maintain its neutrality, says Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs

Bandar Raja, Samudera Darussalam

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement that the Crowned Federation would maintain its neutral position in response to reports of referendum on self-determination held by the local government of Keise Islands, a small archipelago in northern Mandalanusa, as tensions mount in the region.

The 4 November referendum, which has been declared as illegal by the Parliament of Kieraha on November 7 on the ground that said plebiscite is being held without its permission, has once again stressed the often fraught relationship between Gam Lammo and Tual, something that very possibly may turn into a conflict, according to a recently published analysis by researchers from the Mandalanusan Institute of Social Studies. In case the tense situation indeed develops into a conflict between the two entities, it may possibly drag other nations in the region to be involved and cause a humanitarian crisis on an unknown scale, according to the study.

The federal government appears to have weighed the same possibility in mind, as the recent statement released in response to the developing crisis also mentioned that they will keep monitoring the situation and trying to keep in contact with the governments of Kieraha and Acastanha, the latter is Samudera’s major partner in the region, with the hopes to prevent conflict from developing further.

Ever since 2021, Keise Islands, a territory recognized by many as part of Kieraha, has been rocked with increasing demands for self-determination by its population, culminating in the deployment of navy vessels around the islands by Gam Lammo in what has since been described as “an attempt of intimidation towards the islanders”, as well as the victory of Partai Keise Jaya, the political party that sponsored the current 4 November referendum, in the early election at March 2022. Large scale demonstrations in favor of independence have also been reported several months before and after the election in cities throughout the province, most prominently in the provincial capital of Tual.

Bukit Kera - The Jauharius Navy (JN) and the Royal Sekangkang Kera Navy (RSKN) have successfully concluded the 5th Exercise Kingfisher, marking another milestone in the longstanding cooperation between the two naval forces. The flagship bilateral exercise, held from 6 to 9 November 2023, took place at the Bukit Kera Naval Base in Sekangkang Kera. This year's Exercise Kingfisher showcased the strength and synergy between the two navies, featuring a range of vessels including the JN's Cape Gryffinford class - Missile Patrol Vessel, JNS Cape Faversham, and Whichford-class Frigate JNS Willowbrook. The RSKN was represented by its Pelican60 class OPV, KD Teluk Pahat, Patrician-42 class Patrol Vessel KD Berani, and Shahbandar class 90m OPV KD Bandar Mahmud June.

The collaboration kicked off with joint planning and professional exchanges ashore on 6 November, demonstrating the commitment of both navies to enhancing coordination and interoperability. The personnel from JN and RSKN engaged in knowledge-sharing sessions, fostering a deeper understanding of each other's operational procedures. The heart of Exercise Kingfisher unfolded during the sea phase from 7 to 8 November, where both navies executed a series of drills to test and enhance their maritime capabilities. Gunnery firing, maneuvering exercises, and communication drills echoed in the waters off Sekangkang Kera, showcasing the prowess and efficiency of the naval forces.

The exercise aimed not only to bolster joint operational capabilities but also to promote regional security and stability. The mutual understanding developed during Exercise Kingfisher is expected to contribute to the seamless coordination of both navies in future collaborative efforts. The event reached its climax on 9 November with a dignified closing ceremony at Bukit Kera Naval Base. High-ranking officials from both navies expressed their satisfaction with the outcomes of the exercise and emphasized the importance of such joint endeavors in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Both navy commanders jointly presided over the ceremony, commending the professionalism and dedication exhibited by the participating personnel. Certificates of appreciation were exchanged, symbolizing the mutual respect and camaraderie forged during the exercise. The successful conclusion of the 5th Exercise Kingfisher underscores the commitment of the Jauharius Navy and the Royal Sekangkang Kera Navy to build strong, cooperative ties. As both navies continue to evolve in the dynamic maritime landscape, exercises like Kingfisher will play a pivotal role in ensuring regional security and promoting collaborative efforts in times of need.
